This is my favorite Jackson Browne song and one of my favorite songs of all time. It is chilling, haunting and beautiful. Every time I hear this song, it reminds me of a girlfriend I was in love with many years ago, she has a "trace of sorrow" in her eyes and I gave her this song as one of the first presents she ever received from me. I still think about her all the time. Thank you for posting this lovely song.
I really didn’t appreciate Jackson Browne til I was 35. I feel like you have to go through some stuff to really get his music. And then it stays with you forever
Hi. I am 65 years old and it's 2024. When I was in the 8th grade, one of my cousin's best friend turned me on to Jackson Browne. I used to lay on my bed and listen to this album over and over. No one else in my peer group even knew who JB. This music has always been special to me even 50 years later. I'm getting old but feel the same inside.
I had heard the song but never listened to it until in 1996 I had purchased the CD and was driving along in the first car I ever owned that had a complete factory installed great sound system. I had been split up after 27 years of marriage and was heading down the road and this song came on on a stretch of straight lightly travelled road. I really listened to it for the first time and found a place and pulled over got it back up and got out the liner notes with the lyrics and realized Jackson Browne was describing what I was doing right at that point in my life, down to a tee. I remember the whole thing like it was this afternoon every time I listen to the song. Jackson Browne is the same age as me and is able to describe the human conditions we all have down to dotting all the i s and crossing all the tees. To me that is the genius of Jackson Browne, that and having David Lindley there as one of the greatest band members and confidantes anyone could ever have doesn't hurt either.
Wow. What can I say about Jackson Browne? As a Libra, relationships are his focus. He has written THE quintessential songs about all the angst, ecstasy, confusion, and beauty in the connection between human hearts. Beauty and soul in every word...every note.
"Sky" was always listed in many R & R publications as one of the top ten albums of all time. This song is emblematic of such accolades. Jackson is one of the best singers and songwriters of this generation. Have seen him at Red Rocks and both times are memorable.
The only artist that can actually bring me to tears over and over again, both for the exceptional and emotional lyrics and for the time and people this brings me back to.
Ditto. When Tom Petty had to make an impromptu speech for MusiCares 2017 he said, I look around and in this surreal life the people I most admired just showed up … Jackson Browne, Randy Newman. That event really got to me. Could go on and on but best just listen to extraordinary music. Tx Kevin Abts for post.
"When you see through love's illusions, there lies the danger And your perfect lover just looks like a perfect fool So you go running off in search of a perfect stranger While the loneliness seems to spring from your life Like a fountain from a pool" ...... This song brings me to tears but by the end I am filled with hope. The genius of a musical poet that is Jackson Browne.
In my opinion, Jackson Browne is one ot the great artist of all time. Most of his songs are beautifully written and so uniique that I can't help falling in love with them. Thanks for uploading his songs on your channel. A friend from Thailand
He had/has that perfect southern California male look. I've had a crush on him for 45 years. Love his music - have seen him many, many times.......Excellent.
I would travel to the ends of the earth to hear jackson browne sing the Late For The Sky CD from beginning to end. Poetic beauty every single one of 'em.
Awesome presentation of lyrics. 1974 was one of the most if not the most difficult year of my life having lost my father and an Aunt and 2 close friends. I was 23 years old and also coming out of a break-up. This song always encapsulates that time.
Latz51 Your story touched my heart, thank you for sharing it. You will see your loved ones again, darling. One of my favorite things in the comments are reading the experiences of others, yours brought tears to my eyes and made me very glad that I decided to revisit this song. I was born when it was released and it got me through a very tumultuous divorce. Much love to you.
OMG just brings back memories of 1977 running on empty tour Dallas Texas I was standing 3 feet in front of you taking pictures all night long but my god this one really touch my spirit one of the best concerts ever
Extremely wise, mature songs from such a young man at the time. He is America's Steve Winwood. Awesome songwriters for their age at a time when music was Historic!
This song has helped me through every breakup I have ever had. It's a tough listen, but sometimes your heart needs it. It's "All Too Well" from a male perspective.
+Kenny Murphy ,coming to my city soon...so excited...Just had the honor of attending a Rick Springfield concert a few days ago...and to hear Jackson sing this...well...it will be sweet!
One of my top 5 favorite songs by all artists and all genres of all time. Same goes for the album "Late for the sky". By far the best Jackson Browne album even though he released several other good ones.
+bwdrums1 I agree. The song goes from a wistful melancholy to a keep-your-chin-up tone of hope in the final stanzas. Neither emotion is on the polar ends of human emotion so the change is subtle but definite, and makes me smile when I hear it.
Wow! What a brilliant, confessional piece of art. I can't help but wonder what goes through Joan's mind when she hears this. If it were me, I'd be reduced to tears. This boy sure knows issues of the heart and how to express them. Gorgeous. :)
theresa42213 I really prefer not to think about celebrities when I hear these songs. I see me and a girl or other friends and their girls. Plus, It seems in those days, Jackson and Joni were desperately in love with a new person every 6 months. This great album transcends romantic celeb gossip.
Peter Gerstenzang Ha ha You got me there! However l don't really think of these 2 people as ''celebrities''. To me they are songwriters. After hearing the song so many times, l couldn't help but wonder who he was talking about. lts the same with Joni. like in 'A case of you'. l wondered. That was about James Taylor. And yea, they all slept with one another. Consequently, you get broken hearts and great songs. :)
This lyrics for this song were printed in my high school year book along with pictures, graduated in 1976. Hearing it always brings back great memories....
"Before the Deluge" really speaks to me...makes me think of early John Denver, Peter Paul & Mary, and others of the time. It really captures the spirit of the times. "For a Dancer" is poetry, for sure, but doesn't resonate so much. I've not heard "Call It a Loan," but will listen. BTW, I've never communicated w/ anyone on TH-cam before, so I'm a bit rusty.
Wonderful!! I always thought it was fountain of lies. I love it even more now. I had forgotten about the longer album version. Thank you so much for posting it!
I remember calling you on the stairs in high school Sherry and you turned around and I took the picture. That was many many years ago. I hope all is well with you. .
I recently had a friendly debate about the relative merits of Jackson Browne and Tom Petty … and wandered off into their contemporaries, Springsteen, Paul Simon, Dylan am certainly leaving someone out, like Joni Michell, River, which is a song that brings to my knees -- it reminded me so powerfully of a man I will love forever -- I would simply like to celebrate their unique talents and how they enriched our lives.
Looking through some photographs I found inside a drawer I was taken by a photograph of you There were one or two I know that you would have liked a little more But they didn't show your spirit quite as true You were turning 'round to see who was behind you And I took your childish laughter by surprise And at the moment that my camera happened to find you There was just a trace of sorrow in your eyes Now the things that I remember seem so distant and so small Though it hasn't really been that long a time What I was seeing wasn't what was happening at all Although for a while, our path did seem to climb But when you see through love's illusions, there lies the danger And your perfect lover just looks like a perfect fool So you go running off in search of a perfect stranger While the loneliness seems to spring from your life Like a fountain from a pool Fountain of sorrow, fountain of light You've known that hollow sound of your own steps in flight You've had to hide sometimes, but now you're all right And it's good to see your smiling face tonight Now for you and me it may not be that hard to reach our dreams But that magic feeling never seems to last And while the future's there for anyone to change, still you know it seems It would be easier sometimes to change the past I'm just one or two years and a couple of changes behind you In my lessons at love's pain and heartache school Where if you feel too free and you need something to remind you There's this loneliness springing up from your life Like a fountain from a pool Fountain of sorrow, fountain of light You've known that hollow sound of your own steps in flight You've had to hide sometimes but now you're all right And it's good to see your smiling face tonight Fountain of sorrow, fountain of light You've known that hollow sound of your own steps in flight You've had to struggle, you've had to fight To keep understanding and compassion in sight You could be laughing at me, you've got the right But you go on smiling so clear and so bright
Hadn't heard this in a while, listening to it I wondered why this song wasn't a hit record like "Doctor My Eyes". The 6:48 time of the song is cumbersome, but maybe it could have been edited down some ? It's very wordy and the song has a beautiful, but definitely sad, lilt to it. I would love to have been a fly on the wall at Asylum while Geffen and his crew were deciding the fate of this song. I'm sure they had viable business reasons, but, man, it's such an amazing song.
I ;have this playlist set up with Van the Man's Sweet Thing, Bonnie Raitt's Nick of Time, Bruce Springsteen's One Step Up and finishing with the only song that ever woke me from a dead sleep one night in grad school-Fountain of Sorrow. F it, I feel 25 again, if only for a moment
Have added the word album to the notes as you may be right with the assumption he does not appear on this specific track. Sometimes too much information is not good information. Sorry, but hope you enjoyed listening and singing to the track again.

The whole album, Late For The Sky, is a masterpiece.
He is our generation's undisputed "Poet Laureate!" Beautiful lyrics and great music, too !
I really didn’t appreciate Jackson Browne til I was 35. I feel like you have to go through some stuff to really get his music. And then it stays with you forever
I loved a couple of his albums when I was a teenager. Memorized them even.
I share this brilliant artist with the youngsters who understand lyrical beauty and emotion. Yes they are out there.
One of the best song ever written

❤
I believe ‘Sky’ was Rolling Stone’s Album of The Year in ‘74 or ‘75.
Outstanding. The 70's were so wonderful to live in. JB nailed every song and "running on empty" was such a classic for the time.
The only artist that can actually bring me to tears over and over again, both for the exceptional and emotional lyrics and for the time and people this brings me back to.

I Agree. There are many men that write great song's, but not quiet like this Man J.B. He is The Perfection Of Earth
I know. At 73 this still tugs strongly at my heart.
Can't believe this was recorded 40 years ago. Just beautiful.
Can't believe those 40 years now feel like 15 minutes.
Christopher Stokkmo only to remind me 40 years later ... it still isn’t possible 😘
48. Jeez. He is truly one of the most talented.
"When you see through love's illusions, there lies the danger

It's 5:30 A.M. and I woke up dreaming about Jackson singing. He is telling my life story. I could listen to him sing everyday.
I would travel to the ends of the earth to hear jackson browne sing the Late For The Sky CD from beginning to end. Poetic beauty every single one of 'em.
One of the best singer and songwriters of all time!!!!!!!!!1
you could be laughing at me..you got the right....but you go on smiling so clear and so bright
Jackson is so brilliant at first it gets under appreciated.
I cried a river over this song…..💔😢

been listening to this all my adult life
Me too
David Jackson After my divorce from my first husband, it is what got me through the pain.
I feel as old and as young as when I first heard this tune.
But that magic feeling never seems to last...Soooo true...
Jackson Browne has always and will continue to be AWSOME and meaningful ✌
What a genius all his songs are masterpieces
Maybe the best pop/rock song ever written!

Thanks for posting this. I cannot tell you the number of times I meet someone who shares some of their life story, and this song comes to mind.
The opening with the piano - this whole song kills me. Love this guy = 26 when this song came out......
I'm just one or two years and a couple of changes behind you...Brilliant.
very good album. He is an absolute treasure
There lies the danger? Good Lord this man is an American poet
+Kenny Murphy ,coming to my city soon...so excited...Just had the honor of attending a Rick Springfield concert a few days ago...and to hear Jackson sing this...well...it will be sweet!
He's a Human poet.
One of my top 5 favorite songs by all artists and all genres of all time. Same goes for the album "Late for the sky". By far the best Jackson Browne album even though he released several other good ones.
Listened to this song every day for a month after my grandma died
such a inspiration, loved growing up on this voice. long live Jackson, I hope to see you live again!
For me, the whole mood of the song changes @ 5:22, from sadness and regret to a cautious optimism.

The whole album is pretty awesome!
Lyrics just don't come any better than this.
Ohh David, a genius soloist!

How kind Peter but without the music where would I be. Thank YOU too, Steve
"I'm just one or two years and a couple of changes behind you"
I was,but never realised it.
The best LP in history
First heard this a week after my Grandma died and I broke apart
A great album!!!❤️
Late for the Sky ❤ what a album ❤ this song is just beautiful and so is the whole album ❤ for me ”For a Dancer” is the absolute masterpiece.
Perfect album from first song to last.
holy crap! what an amazing album!

Saw him in Boston in '73 and he said this was his first time playing this....one of my favorites.
Had me hooked at those photos in the drawer and ever since. Me too, thanks.
Thank you for posting this. It's one of my favorite songs, and I haven't heard it in years. It's very much my personal "theme" song.
Astonishing.
love this very talented man!!;

@@kevinkearney4839 No doubt. I just wish he didn't beat up his girlfriend.

"Loose change".
Crankin out on this again!
If you have ever seen him live, and you think that he has been able to express human emotion as well as anyone, ever, you are very akin to me.

Get better fast, Jackson Browne!
monumental.

My favorite song. Epic.
Star Light r
Looking through some photographs I found inside a drawer
I was taken by a photograph of you
There were one or two I know that you would have liked a little more
But they didn't show your spirit quite as true
You were turning 'round to see who was behind you
And I took your childish laughter by surprise
And at the moment that my camera happened to find you
There was just a trace of sorrow in your eyes
Now the things that I remember seem so distant and so small
Though it hasn't really been that long a time
What I was seeing wasn't what was happening at all
Although for a while, our path did seem to climb
But when you see through love's illusions, there lies the danger
And your perfect lover just looks like a perfect fool
So you go running off in search of a perfect stranger
While the loneliness seems to spring from your life
Like a fountain from a pool
Fountain of sorrow, fountain of light
You've known that hollow sound of your own steps in flight
You've had to hide sometimes, but now you're all right
And it's good to see your smiling face tonight
Now for you and me it may not be that hard to reach our dreams
But that magic feeling never seems to last
And while the future's there for anyone to change, still you know it seems
It would be easier sometimes to change the past
I'm just one or two years and a couple of changes behind you
In my lessons at love's pain and heartache school
Where if you feel too free and you need something to remind you
There's this loneliness springing up from your life
Like a fountain from a pool
Fountain of sorrow, fountain of light
You've known that hollow sound of your own steps in flight
You've had to hide sometimes but now you're all right
And it's good to see your smiling face tonight
Fountain of sorrow, fountain of light
You've known that hollow sound of your own steps in flight
You've had to struggle, you've had to fight
To keep understanding and compassion in sight
You could be laughing at me, you've got the right
But you go on smiling so clear and so bright
Thanks for posting the complete lyrics here; so much easier to read all at once.
Yeah, yeah, oh, yes......his words, my life - our lives. Oh, yeah.
Looking through some photographs I found inside a drawer, I was taken by a photograph of you...is there a more perfect beginning for a song?
I love that sentence!
Molly Dotson He is a songwriting genius without a doubt. I can so feel what he was feeling when he wrote this amazing song.
So clever! loved that line the second I heard it some 45 years ago.

American rock music has had some outstanding song writers but they all come in 2'nd to Jackson Browne.

This song is the Picasso, Rembrandt and a Vincent van Gogh of lyrics.
The hollow sound of your own steps in flight. Too familiar.
Fountain of Sorrow I think is my favorite. Too bad it’s so long, doesn’t get much radio time.
