  • With all the new Sonic X Shadow Generations footage that we have been getting recently, one point that I have seen brought up a ton is that the game kinda looks like Sonic Forces, so in today's video, I wanna look at the first levels from both games and one extra from forces and I want to answer the question, Is Sonic X Shadow Generations Like Sonic Forces?

      @@spritvio639 I get it, theres more to like because, as you said, they really tried. But please don't use that as an excuse to say the game is actually an enjoyable experience. At the end of the day, mediocrity is better than poor quality. Forces is just the better game.

      Honestly, I prefer a game so bad it's funny over a really bland, mediocre game.
      It's like watching a Neil Breen film or a dumb B movie from the 80s. I'll take that over a boring, run-of-the-mill movie any day.
      I'm probably one of the few people that prefer 06' over Lost World. It's simply more interesting to me.

    Sonic Forces really scared the fandom cause every time we get Peak There's gotta Someone screaming "straight line!" I got a lot of hope for Shadow generations cause not only dose it look fun but it brings back all the coolest aspects of shadow and i'm all for it.

      That’s what I’m saying. I would get it if we had like 5 seconds of gameplay, but we have a whole stage and we can analyze the whole thing and we can see it’s not the same

    At the end of the day, we need to thank Frontiers for this. Shadow Gens is a perfect middle ground between Boost and Adventure/Frontiers. Levels are no longer straight lines with Boost to win, skill is back, player choice is back. I have faith in Shadow Gens.

    at this point Sonic forces is like the equivalent of PTSD for the Sonic fandom, we can't see any amount of automation man, hopefully future Sonic games will remove that from us

    Sonic Frontiers was the foundation of good level design for this Boost/Adventure combination. Sonic X Shadow Generations is the game that will take that foundation and heavily expand on it

    What's interesting about Forces though is that if you try to 100% each level [get the collectables] it's more fun than playing it casually.
    Not that its a high bar or anything, but i think that's the reason for some people liking it.
    I also found the Custom character's gameplay more rewarding in the alt-path regard too.

    anyone who thinks the game looks like forces REALLY needs to play lost valley again because lost valley is one of the worst sonic stages ever and its an example of how bad the level design really was in that game alright? they gotta stop being so fucking traumatized over forces lmao god damn

      I wouldn't hold my breath on the hub world being as big as frontiers. The first frontiers open zone level took me 6-7 hours on the first run. Which is way longer than sonic generations.
      Izuka said the shadow portion of the game won't be as long as generations. So I'd say the hub world probably won't be that big or long, maybe like 1 - 2 hours to finish it on the first run.
      Keep your expectations low this isn't a new mainline game this is kinda like a sub game mixed in with a main line game

      Agree with you, but with my very-slow walkthrough it took me about 70 hours in Frontiers to complete almost everything (but not all). So, this could take a good time for me, but we'll see.

      yeah, Forces also suck because you can only choose a level by switching between them. You don't play as Sonic (Classic or Modern) or even as the Avatar to choose a level

      If I were to imagine the Hub World not being as big as the Island in Frontiers I would Compare the Hub World in Shadow Gens comparable to some worlds Sonic Speed Simulator Open World

    I think people are just appreciative over the fact that Motar Canyon was just fully 3D which was something we haven’t had in the boost games since Unleashed at that point.
    For my money, Network Terminal and Null Space deserve more praise for multiple pathways.

    I first noticed that Sonic X shadow generations uses one thing from forces because Shadow’s Homing Attack lock in sound was the exact same as in forces.

    Funny thing: The mortar canyon level? The BETA version that's still in the files has level design where you HAVE to pick a path rather than just a ramp over the middle, and actually having to interact with the quick step

    I am beyond hopeful for this. Not only is the level design a major step up, but the level actually has susbtance and length. I love that

    The only times i saw automation in Shadow Generations is like when you enter the big hallway of multiple paths and right at the end which just shows how much Sonic Team are now confident in their and the player's abilities after Sonic Frontiers.

    This is damn near the TENTH video I've seen of someone debunking Matt's Forces allegations. It's all basically the same thing.
    From all the videos I've watched, Forces:
    1. Controls bad
    2. Does have alternate paths but are small in number and almost always take you right back to the main path
    3. Does not have much spectecle in the levels
    4. Doesn't do much with the level gimmicks (probably because there's barely any)
    5. Uses too much automation.
    And Shadow Generations:
    1. Controls well (from Fadel)
    2. Has many alternate paths that actually take you somewhere else and can save time
    3. Has the most spectacle in the entire franchise
    4. Uses not only level, but also character specific gimmicks well.
    5. Little to no automation.

      Forces does have level gimmicks but they all appear in the 2D sections. Like those platforms that move immediately when you touch them in that one Metropolis level. Or the gravity switching in Classic Sonic Death Egg / Avatar Metropolis.
      3D sections are almost entirely comprised of automation, running forward, boosting on the ground, boosting on rails, homing attacking and side stepping sections

    I don't think Forces problems is being too short, becase:
    1. ALL Generations stages last around 1/2 or at max 3 minutes, with the only exception being Planet Wisp which goes around 4/5 minutes
    2. The total lenght of Sonjc Forces is on par with all the other games from the 2010s, it is a game that lasts arounf 2 hours in a casual quick any% playthrough, and thats the same amount of lenght a playthrough of Sonic Colors, Sonic Generations and Sonic Lost World has
    The problem really relies the most on the lack of imputs, abilities and knowlodge of the game Forces tests on the player
    In Generations, on the first 15 seconds of a stage you have to react quick, jump into dash rings, switch rails, chain homing attacks, while in Forces in the first 15 seconds of a level you're just boosting forward doing nothing
    City Escape from SA2 and Green Hill Act 2 from Generations are filled with hallways, and the two stages, just like Lost Valley can be finished by jump jumping a few times and moving the analog forward and a few times to the side, is that fun? No, it's just as fun as a Lost Valley run
    However there are things in those hallways to spice things up, to make you use your moveset and knowlodge on the game, the truck section in SA2 for example can be beat like many segments of any Forces Stage, just pressing backwards and doing nothing, but there are things to spice your run if you're a good player like ramps for you to do tricks
    It seems that Forces Stages just made the bottom boring routes that those other games have and forgot to spice them up to make you use your moveset and knowlodge on the game
    And that's the thing why Shadow Generations don't look horrible and loojs promissing, you HAVE things to do in those hallways, on the first 5 seconds of the stage you can jump from the starting rail to get into another rail above, then forward you can jump over the springs to stick into the wall faster, then later if you don't react fast enough and don't homing attack the meteors you'll fall into the other path, or you can simply jump over the springs and destroy the creates to go through that path
    And the level is filled with that just like those other good designed games are, you can stick to walls to avoid spring sections, use your Chaos Control to create new paths, those variations EXIST and they seem meaningful, because that's another problem with Forces, even though the alternate paths exist, they are boring and don't change a thing
    The only alternate path in Lost Valley, at the end of the stage for example, nothing changes no matter the path you go, you'll only boost forward in both paths
    Shadow Gens on the other hand, those paths make a difference in your gameplay, you WILL finish a level faster by taking other paths and using the game mechanics to your advantage, just like SA2 and Generations

      Anyway, my point is: Forces Stages don't just "end when it seems they're going to start to get good" but instead they fail to be good when they already should be good stages, that being right at the start of the stage, comparing the first 15 seconds of a good first Sonic level and the first 15 seconds of Lost Valley feels like a joke
      And that's why comparing Shadow Gens to Forces is not even close, because Shadow Generations just like those good games rewards you for thinking and using your knowlodge on the stage

      Gens stages are 1:30 to 2 minutes long only if you're an experienced player and know all the shortcuts lol. Also it doesnt matter that Forces is just as short as Generations, it's the amount of content it has. Forces is stretched by result screen bs and other stuff

      @@pinhe4d321 The thing is that Forces stages will also always be 40 seconds to 1:30 minutes no matter your skill (unless you use exploits and glitches)
      And I really don't think that's the whole reason why Forces lasts around 2 hours, even skipping all cutscenes and victory screens, you'll still take almost 2 hours to beat the whole game, the fact that the game has the double of stages than Generations has also may help a lot, which proves it's not only the bs in the menus that slows the game down
      As I said, it wouldn't be a problem if the levels were FUN and STARTED fun like all other boost games, Generations manages to do that even if it doesn't has the long stages Unleashed has that last around 3/6 minutes

    Also I KNEW I wasn't crazy, the level design feels really like Adventure with its open spaces but also has some Boost level designs mixed with it. Its why it looks much different then anything we seen before.

    Shadow generations looks like frontiers cyberspace with a little spice, I just hope that levels above the tutorial first level dont just have a straight line level with a few ramps for "alternate" paths like cyberspace mostly has.

    In general, it's too early to talk about level design, because this is the first level, the purpose of which is to teach game mechanics. There aren't even 2d sections that were in the trailer

    The fact that we are going to have an open zone hub area And that the first level is god tier and that Black doom is back is enough to let you know that this is not a forces episode shadow game, this is a bowser's fury game

    The level from the demo lasts roughly 4 1/2 minutes, maybe 5 depending on your skill
    Forces had levels that lasted for like...a minute...sometimes 2

    Sonic Forces was a real disease that spread across the fandom and it’s community it’s not even funny so I thank god that Shadow Generations is happening do revive this character that has been stuck in limbo for years now ever since Sonic Forces and Sonic Boom I’m glad for Shadow Generations because of how much this franchise needs this game to succeed and what we’ve seen so far it looks like a true successor to Sonic Generations
    Now I understand what Sonic Forces stands for its short for Sonic Forced Torment 💀

    Unironically sweet editing could this be the new Peaktuber? Also i think the main issue with Forces alt paths is because there are no powerups theres no reason to take alternate paths and if you do you waste time, which doesnt really matter because you can easily get an S rank regardless, forces prioritize stage Aesthetics over Depth, it makes it feel unrewarding for going out of your way, and instead it feels like your being punished for looking for new things, Shadows Ark gameplay in comparison immediatly hits you with a new path that rewards quick reactions, and allows you to see new aspects of the level do they ultimately bring you to the same areas, yes, but that doesnt make the alt paths useless, because they allow you to get there ever so much faster than if you just went the straight and narrow. And the lack of conversation about how chaos control effects the gameay is baffling, it basically opens a whole new way to understand the level design. 9:20 Not onowing how to get up there is actually a really good sign to me cus it shows that the level design is inspiring experimentation over instant gratification.

    Only the long jump animation looks like forces, the whole game looks different. The camera angle looks like sonic frontiers, which I really like that angle, and the level designs are like unleashed, generations and of course adventure 1 and 2 with the pure advanced pathways, as for shadow's design, I've seen some parts that looked like sonic's design in frontiers, and the controls are like frontiers, and it's perfect, especially with modern sonic's gameplay, because it'll fell like you playing team sonic racing, ya know, the L2/LT being the drift button and the R2/RT being the boost, for me it'll feel perfect, I play a lot of racing games, so I guess I'll get used to it

    This is raising my faith on sega remastering Sonic Unleased. Also the first Sonic game I played was Sonic 2006 when I was like 5 years old and I can with no fear to be wrong that it was 3 times more fun to play than Sonic Forces this game was the second modern
    Sonic I ever played and played by years until I got all its trophies and saw this and said his right. This game caused by far the most damage to boost game first impressions.

    Well the whole self boost was fun in unleashed when it was first introduced but I will say forces did mess it up on the short level, maybe if we was unleashed/06 level maps we might have a chance

    To be honest i like forces. I understand that its lacking though. But it has some decent levels like null space, mortar canyon and even the final boss. At leasy in my opinion. I really dont care if the game is not objectively good. I still enjoy it for what it is. Thats why its one of my favorite sonic games.

    Forces also felt a lot stiffer, like it would magnet me to the middle and i couldnt do much in the way of going left and right so yeah I was just boosting.
    Then sonic colors ultimate felt the same, idk if im just remembering wrong, but I feel like the original had more wiggle room to the controls. I remember enjoying colors but colors ultimate? Hated that shit. Also they took away one ups for no reason.
    It makes me worry the stiffness is gonna come back in generations remaster

    It reminds me Frontiers when it comes to how Shadow handles, it took a lot of what Frontiers had (a lot less automation, especially in the DLC) and applied it to level based game like Generations. That move when he saved himself from falling? That something you can do in Frontiers as well and I've done it a lot, it gives you a lot of agency of how to traverse the level and interact with it.
    Forces? It's a shame they've wasted what could've been a perfectly good villain in this game, which actually has a very good vendetta against Shadow (always thought they fit each other) on a game which is utterly mediocre, plays itself, it's somehow more painfull than 06. They've at least tried in thay game, in Forces? It looked like they just gave up.
    The reason Mortar Canyon is so beloved is because it's relatively open for experimentation, fully 3D and without that much of automation. That level and Null Space where the best levels in that game because of it, they showed what this game could be, but not...
    Yeah, Forces really gave the nay sayers something to justifiably nitpick.

    I remember seeing Shadow Generations, and then the biggest thing that came up from what bit of discourse I decided to look at was that on the boosting paths... They don't really have the full-on level aspects that give a sense of engagement that was felt, like the short hops or the drift (Which is funny because the building segment shows they have the animations, and the movement on the building has the drift animations from Unleashed, while having the controls from the water slides of Luminous Forest in Episode Shadow).
    I honestly at this point have just decided that regardless, I'm gonna play it Day One and gauge what I feel from the level design in my own playthrough, though

    I'll agree that the level design has improved, but it just doesn't have the same energy as sonic generations. shadow *feels* remarkably slower. Granted, I dont know the actual units of speed sonic goes at in sonic generations, but compared to shadow, it feels like night and day to me, just looking at it. But Idk, we'll soon see in a few months.
    also, it may be just because they chose final chase (Or final rush? whichever), but the design of the paths just scare me into thinking it looks just like mortar canyon but on level ground instead, sharing it's incredibly blocky aesthetic and not so distinctive looks. Also, the shortcuts dont look all that remarkable in comparison to sonic generations. Yes, they are different compared to sonic forces, I can see the improvements, but I feel like this is like a geriatric ward, trying to remind sonic team about what sonic was and what his games mean to people.
    I can see they're trying, but I'm not entirely convinced.

    i hate how the people cant see good level design froom bad gameplay like when fadel showed his gameplay most of the people who said it looked like forces chamged their minds after seeing it but its not like the level design changed it was still good in the early gameplay but people just seemed to focus on the paths they were going through and ignore all the alternate paths i feel like if you were to show the people saying this gameplay of any level in generations but played poorly they'll probably say the level design is shit

    I'm really glad this video pointed out some of Mortar Canyon's fatal flaws. I've heard so many people say it's one of Forces' better stages, and that baffles me, since it's arguably one of the worst, at least in my opinion. The fact you can jump over 90% of the stage feels like one of the most painful oversights in any videogame level ever; Forces is one of the few Sonic games where the air boost is uncapped, and yet they don't factor that in when testing one of the final stages of the game.

    The trailer we got made me think it was forces design, but the moment i saw full gameplay of the stage, seeing all the routes, all the skips you can take and the fact its like a 5 minute stage i knew. This was leagues above frontiers and forces level design.

    No, definetly not as bad as Sonic Forces.
    First of all, that's simply impossible.
    And after the extended gameplays were released, you can tell they put in the effort for this. I think it's a W.
    Plus, you gotta remember, the main purpose of the game is to remake Sonic Generations.
    Shadow Generations is an add-on (like Bowser's Fury for Super Marion 3D World).

    Animated scenery and levels are problem as and often a distance make the smoke coming from the city tiny bit of smoke is supposed to be a war going on in the city being destroyed the only thing we get is a tiny bit of smoke off in a distance most levels end when generators get destroyed with no explanation and they just randomly happens not even a level designed for part

    Honestly, if the levels were at least 2-3 minutes and each character had at least 2 full acts in each of the 7 zones, it would be much more bearable. We should have had so many other playable characters to truly make it feel like the “Forces” and this could have been the closest thing to Sonic Heroes 2

    This game plays more like sa2 and p-06 with boost i tried it and thats what it feels like… aka it feels good, and level design is really alot for a tutorial first stage, even unleashed didnt have much for the first stage, and this is act 1, act 2 and the rest to come will peak higher than ever

    The problems I have with the game are:
    Force's jumpball which is REAL LAME
    double jump (I don't like that but that's something I'm fine with) and shadow doesn't skate harder while boosting (he should instead skate like he does in 10:32 of this vid) No excuse for that.

    I had the exact same thought when I saw the first trailer, and my mind went "Oh, it's another Forces game. You're killing me , SEGA!" But then I saw the gameplay and I changed my mind cause it looks epic.
    Everything wrong about Forces is well-explained, and I completely agree (they don't look anything like an Unleashed/Gens level) and I'm happy that this new Shadow Generations game is doing so much better than Forces, especially when they also add his Chaos Powers. My only criticism, albeit personally, is that the animations of the game are that of Forces, such as his spin jump, the homing cursor SFX, no hop, his boost (although I'll have to admit it looks awesome), etc. If you're going to make a remaster/tie-in game, then stick with the format, will you?
    And Takashi Iizuka said that Forces is bad because there's little evolution with the traditional boost game (I mean, ok that's a small factor to the issue). Clearly it's because Forces is such a lame game in itself, don't drag Unleashed or Generations to your argument
    Edit: imo the Forces stages are comparable to a typical Generations challenge time-wise, but I'll enjoy playing the latter more. So short length being an issue is kind of a minor issue of Forces
