    You know what busts the young parents budget? It's not the needs of the child, it's the wants of the parent. - Yes, Dave, that's it exactly!

    This clip is EXACTLY what I've been looking for. My husband says he doesn't want us to try having a baby till after we get the down payment for a house. I said to him that if people waited till they could afford to have kids the human race would go extinct. Hope this helps ease some of the stress in his mind.

    Why did no one mention childcare? I pay $828/month for childcare. More when she was an infant. That's over $10,000 a year with the annual registration fee. That is the normal rate in my area. Early and unplanned parenthood is directly correlated with lower lifelong earnings. Planning your family is definitely the responsible thing to do. While yes there are people who spend frivolously on their children I really don't believe that's the bulk of expenses for most people.

      That's true. Thank God for grandmas everywhere. My MIL has kept our little one and she's 18 months now. Going into daycare now will likely be under $700/month. But I'm pregnant and going to be staying home with both in a few months so that's not going to happen anytime soon. But still shouldn't equate to $250,000/per child. That's nuts! I buy everything second hand and use diaper subscriptions to keep costs low. Next time I'll be doing cloth diapers.

      I was going to ask this question! Before having a kid, i looked into the cost....daycare for 9 months, loss of wages during my maternity, basic child necessities, oop medical costs, etc...about 20k!
      You guessed it, we passed on having kids until we can afford it.

    • @karihosny9420

      I agree with you Grace. Day Care is very high and this is our biggest expense. We don't buy luxuries beyond basic necessities.

    Babies are only as expensive as you make them. Our family is living off of a single, entry-level income (comfortable, but not lavish), and we have zero worries about kids breaking the budget. The amount of good-quality, used baby items that people will give you (especially for your first child) is ridiculous; people are always looking to get rid of old baby stuff--especially clothes--and if you hold off on buying anything new until you've seen what you can get for free or for cheap from friends and family, you can easily save hundreds of dollars. If you're able to, investing in some cloth diapers instead of disposables can also help you cut costs.
    As a couple who wants a large family, we never want to be put in a position where we have to say no to having another baby because we feel like we can't afford it. Fortunately, by learning to live within our means and making some money-saving lifestyle choices in the present, we're ensuring that any children we have will feel like a blessing, not a crippling financial drain.

    The bigger house before kids is so weird to me! We had someone tell us we could only have two kids due to only having a possible 2-3 bedroom house! We are about to have baby #3 and our first two boys happily share one room, baby is in our room! I breastfeed, I cloth diaper, I make our baby food and our kids get blessed with handle downs and toys often! We've gotten better with money and keep things to a lower budget now than we did before kids!

    • @atdepaulis
      @atdepaulis 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hannah Joy Ya its funny that people are in shock when you mention that your kids "share" a room... they dont have their own room?? (insert sarcasm lol)

    • @bognajordan4977
      @bognajordan4977 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, I shared a room with my sister all my childhood and never saw that as a nuisance - we loved it! Now we have 4 kids under 7, and the three oldest share their room too, the baby/toddler will be joining them soon. They basically just sleep there, during day they’re always in the kitchen/living room anyway. We’re saving up to build our house, and then we plan to spread them out a bit, but until then they’re fine.

    Glad i saw this, my husband and i are turning 28 and 29. We've been waiting to have more money/get out of debt and now I see that we should just go for it coz we really want to make that step to being parents and also feel like time is going to run out. Its just about being smart with your spending, buying the needs not wants 😊

      Michelle Mitchell Save, save, save. My husband and I waited and lost our first baby. We had our daughter when I was 35 and he was 32. #3 will get here, Lord willing, right after I turn 37. I still want 2 more. Plan and prepare but don't wait too long. We both wish we were younger.

    • @bognajordan4977
      @bognajordan4977 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      We’ve got 4 kids, 5th on the way - and with income of $5,000/month we are able to pay down at least $1,300 + whatever we sell (this month I paid off $1,750, without reaching into other budget categories) - and only $4,000 left of our total debt to pay off! We live in Canada, so we have free/paid from taxes healthcare, but we pay $2,000 monthly rent for 3 bedroom unit - so we’re not slowing down with savings until we have emergency fund and money for our own house 😀

    When I was pregnant with my daughter, I went baby clothes shopping at babies r us (RIP) and spent $70 freaking dollars on 12 baby onesies. And they weren't even cute. So, from that day forward I said i am never buying clothes brand new again, and I just buy all my daughters clothes used. It's been great, they are in great condition since babies don't wear the clothes for very long. And I've saved $100s

    I love this!! My husband and I have been married almost 5 years. We have no children yet and we are working on baby step 2. We have been having this conversation for some money about wanting to hurry up to pay debt. We aren’t waiting for the debt to be completely clear, even tho that’s what I would prefer, to have kids but using it as motivation to get as much done as possible before we get to that time

    we have 4 kids, 6, 5 & 1 year old twins. we live in a 2 bedroom 1 bath duplex and i love it! we have 1 car & no debt & my husband is the only income we get at 11/hr. we get some comments on getting bigger place but i dont feel like we need to struggle to have what people think we need. my kids are thriving & enjoy sleeping together, we have a trundel bed for when the twins get bigger & they will all be in one room. every family is different. this is what we love & what works best for our family.

    I'm still in the intro and you're right it's insane! Never in history has a society told itself that it is not a good idea to have kids as soon as possible and I think we're really really shooting ourselves in the foot. And asked Christian's the first thing that we need to remember is that God commands us not to have and choosing not to have kids because of finances is sometimes if not often a fear Factor. The Bible commands us to have children and I'm not saying that in a negative way and it doesn't have to be this scary hard rule, it's a wonderful thing. it grows us up and makes us more holy
    . every time we have a a new season with new challenges God calls us higher and deeper, marriage and parenting are like that. It is completely unbiblical to delay or decide not to have kids especially if you're married and there's no reason not to accept for fear or selfishness

    I'm working on a science PhD, fiance is an engineer, we're very frugal, no debt other than a mortgage... and I have no idea how to afford a kid. Childcare, what if we lose health insurance???, affording housing in an area with decent schools and career opportunities for us, what if the kid has special needs??? I'm not worried about clothes, I'm thinking about my future kid having a successful adult life! We're trying to figure out how to relocate to Europe where there is more support from the community.

    We pay more in childcare for our 2 kids than we do our home mortgage. Childcare represents our largest budgeted expense per month. Creating a budget around child care costs is difficult and trying to save the Dave Ramsey way during this time of child care expenses is even harder.

      Candice Johnson you know please take it from me. God can give you cheaper child care. I paid $800 a month (on a discount) for my 1st son 10 years ago & with my 2nd son I was blessed to get the same childcare that my in-laws used but didn't tell me about with my 1st son & spent $400 a month to full on Christian preschool where my 2nd son is farther along than my 1st son was at 5 yrs. old now that he's in kindergarten. He is exceeding where he needs to be. Don't let your 1st child be like the Luv diaper commercials where you have to have this particular diaper, school, etc. (Not saying you r but I know it happens).
      I prejudged the school thinking we'd get a better education b/c it wasn't in a particular place or look perfect but the teacher prepared him mentally, spiritually, & loved my son.
