Power/Toughness effects are applied in layer 7, in four sub-layers: characteristing-defining, base setting, modifying, and switching -- and are applied in that order.
In this instance, Vertex Paladin's ability is a "characteristic defining ability" which gets applied first, making it 5/5, and the Marshals of Zhalfir bump it up to 7/7 with p/t modifying abilities.
If you were to cast Shapecraft on it, the 4/3 base p/t would be applied over the characteristic-defining ability, making it a 4/3, but the Marshals would still bump it up to 6/5.
6/5 is still very big, and probably not different enough from 7/7 that it would have changed your decisions.
