MintyComedicArts.....ok so it is mentioned Lacy is some how able to survive in Space and not die............the extra Sees Superman in Space with Jeromy who also does not die in space,,,,,yeah that extra scene makes no scene either.
Thanks Minty!! I was just rewatching Superman last night, without knowing that you would post this today. It is true that the theme of World Peace is more valid today, than back in the 80s. Yes, we need Superman now. RIP Christopher Reeve!!🙏🙏
A much more complete and concise version. It's little things that add a lot of context. The same way the Director's Cut of Batman V. Superman's extra scenes added lots of context. By the way, why is it with Superman movies being so heavily edited? It all started when they couldn't finish Superman: The Movie on time, then the whole director debacle with Superman II, then the completely script-altered Superman III. Supes can't catch a break.
Imagine being the actor in a movie that has a premier so big the royal couple is attending, everyone is dressed up and you have to wear the Nuclear Man costume 🤣🤣
When it was new in cinemas, I never even got through one sitting of this film. However...YOU like it Minty. Why can't THAT be good enough reason to have another go at this movie? I think it IS a good enough reason now. I still have the DVD from that HUGE 14-disc set they put out in...when was it? 2008? Anyway...I'm gonna watch it all through 'til the end. See ya!
My big issue with Superman solving the missile crisis is that it really changes the kind of arm race, it would just be a super human arms race. Also at what point does this just turn into an injustice style universe?
Actually, in the movie, Lex tells Lenny that the device that contains the proto-Nuclear Man will create a suit for him from the strands of material Lex clips into it.
I wish Industrial Light & Magic got The Rights to The Christopher Reeve Superman Movies after Superman III and Superman IV would Come out in 1985 and Superman V in 1990 while Christopher Reeve could’ve been Ben Richards in The Running Man in 1987.
Yeah I feel like if Industrial Light & Magic got the Rights to Superman after Superman III The Superman Movies would’ve been better and having Christopher Reeve play Ben Richards in The Running Man I Think Christopher Reeve would’ve of course played Superman but he would’ve got to play Roles that are like Arnold Schwarzenegger Sylvester Stallone Roles Christopher Reeve could have after Superman V to being Action Heroes Characters in The 1990s maybe and maybe winning his first Oscar Christopher Reeve would definitely be playing Action Heroes in The 1990s The 90s would’ve been Reeve’s best decade to do movies if he had not chosen to do The Movie Anna Karenina in 1985 and 10 years later in May of 1995.
@@tylerlozano9849Nothing against those guys...especially Sly, but Reeve was a much better actor than those two. Watch Deathtrap and Somewhere in Time and you will see the range Reeve had. Somewhere in Time is one of my favorite romance movies and Jane Seymour never looked more beautiful in it.
I think Chris Reeve actually hated Superman III more than the way Superman IV turned out based on his interviews. At least he had some input on the fourth
I wonder if there was a screening of the original mix to reviewers. I remember in the UK a movie reviewer talking about Nuclear man 1 and nuclear man 2 so I don't know if he saw a rough edit, or the original script
It would be fun to see the full version of this. Supposedly, it’s sitting somewhere in the Warner Bros. vaults never to be released. I saw this movie in the summer of 1987, it was the first Superman movie I ever saw in theaters. I watched it on Home video so many times as a kid. Sure it’s a bad movie, but I will always love it. Nostalgia heaven for me.
I liked this film because of the part where Superman got rid of the world’s nukes. We definitely need to get rid of the world’s nukes today, because many nuclear war experts say we are currently at more risk of nuclear war than we were during the Cold War.
The cheesy budget slashing did a super injustice to this movie. Unlike the previous films; they didn't even bother to color the teal suit to make it blue.
I love watching your videos. They always bring me back to a point of nostalgia. Thanks minty for reminding me of my childhood and remembering better times ❤️❤️❤️
Now I have way too many thoughts on this, and they all want out 😉 1. Chapeau for the meticulous editing, including finding and procuring the source material beforehand! That must have taken ages to do! 1b. I especially liked how the „gaps“ in the live action footage were filled, for example always chosing wisely when to use the comics and when to go with stills. 2. (There’s quite a chance I might be misremembering this, considering the wee bit of time that has gone by since, but) I do have a somewhat vague memory of the twister and Moscow scenes having been included in the (dubbed) theatrical release here in Germany back then… 3. But quite vividly I do remember my immediate reaction once the movie roled: [Credits, swooshing by earth] „Hm, that’s odd… They look… somehow way less impressive than in the nearly-a-decade-old-by-now first movie? Well, they do have Superman’s signature colours in it, so at least that’s nice…“ [Model shots of space station] „Yeah! Now we’re talking! This is going to be like Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, or Firefox!“ [Badly composited, clearly stationary, greenish Superman „flys“ towards the camera] „WHAT THE EXPLETIVE? ARE YOU EXPLETIVINGLY KIDDING ME??“ 3b. For context: Watching Richard Donner’s Superman I at the movies is among my earliest „going to the cinema!“ memories, and certainly the most formative one. When I entered the cinema to watch Superman IV, I truly expected the series to return to the heights of that first movie after years of noticable decline, to feel the same magical sense of amazement once more… I’ll leave it at: That did not happen. 3c. Differentexpletive, I’m old. (Well, old-ish. Sort of. In the upper regions of my prime, rather. Yetanotherexpletive, Chris Reeve taking flight as Superman on the big silver screen to save Lois dangling from a helicopter wasn’t that long ago, was it?) 4. In the comic adaption, the kid (Jeremy) got a space suit for his trip into space with Superman 🙂 4b. And Superman used super-speed to rebuild the Great Wall by hand instead of going with the movie's „we’re not even pretending to try anymore“ route of masonry-vision. 5. Jeremy's school teacher is played by the same actress as the (quite smiting) Admiral Cornwell in Star Trek: Discovery seasons 1 & 2! 6. Script Writer Mark Rosenthal courageously taking responsibility recorded an audio commentary worth listening to for a DVD release that while insightful, also sounded like one big apology… 😅
I didn't know this was re-uploaded because I still enjoy the content and I will always miss Christopher Reeve because at the time his Superman suit was perfectly 100% comic accurate and his characterization of the character is amazing too, RIP Christopher Reeve.
I have the comic book adaptation of Superman IV that you showed in this clip, and I noticed that it empathized the deleted scenes. I believe they were all included in the comic. It looks like the comic book writer wasn't happy with the scenes that were removed and made sure to include them all in the comic. It even made some improvements as was shown in the clip above. In the Superman IV DVD, the audio commentary points out what went wrong during filming, mainly the budget cuts that happened while they were making the movie, which screwed them over no end. There's a lot of deleted scenes in Superman 1 and 2 as well. Also the Richard Donner cut of Superman 2 makes quite a few changes.
There's a Reeve Superman film fansite that really goes all out when it comes to getting in touch with the cast and crew of these films, as well as collecting props and stuff. They recently interviewed Mark Pillow (Nuclear Man) to talk about the making of the film and him dressed in costume for the premiere. It was both very informative and very funny (dude definitely has a sense of humor about everything involved with this flick). The interesting bit that I should mention is that, apparently they've FOUND a copy of the original 134 minute cut of the film. Hopefully they'll be able to do something with it. When I was a kid, I had a comic book version of the movie that was made BEFORE the film was re-edited to 89 minutes, so there's a lot of things that have never been seen before. Sadly, I no longer have that comic.
I think the first Nuclear Man was supposed to be Bizarro. They are both twisted clones of the Man of Steel, who are more bumbling and misguided than a threat.
There's a lot of good pieces in this movie. I like the Girl Boss having a thing for Clark, Lex's Nuclear Man is fun. Gene Hackman is an enjoyable Lex Luthor but a little more 4D Chess to the charactor would've been nice. Maybe a fan edit could be made- where Lex is Really behind the whole world giving Superman the nukes, so that Superman is conned into creating Nuclear Man by launching the nukes into the sun. Lex playing all sides, trying to look like a good guy while also trying to ruin Superman, but ultimately Superman triumpths.
I can't stand it when people hate on this movie.. but I lwys fully understand why so I never argue it. I'm just a huge Superman fan though. Born in 1986 so grew up believing a man could fly.
10:00 Exactly this happens a lot especially in scifi movies and TV shows, for example in the original Lost In Space tv show little Will Robinson runs up to his father and says he's just met a space pirate, his mother is concerned saying he's had too much sun, and when young Will continues he's interrupted with anger from his father, Hello? this is the same father who's head of a family who's literally lost in space lol after all the fantastic creatures and dangerous monsters they've witnessed they still ridicule him.
I always liked this movie! My uncle who was my main male authority had just gotten out of the Army and really built up the cold war to my 10 year old self..... Rocky 4 and Superman 4, both had cold war tones and I swear had a lot to do with the fall of the wall, which happened a few years later. Then of course the USSR fell apart.
The only two issues I have with Superman III, and IV was that: A: In IIII, the robot/supercomputer should have been Brainiac. B: In IV, Nuclear Man should have been Bizzaro.
I remember those two scenes you mentioned. They where also in the version released in Denmark. Just like Superman 2 har scenes that have been cut from the new releases (not talking about the Ricard Donner cut). But a scene from the jail with some big guy pissing in bed. And the super villains killing a kid with a light from a police car, plus a few others. I need to find that version, thats my childhood.
While the flying sequence may not have been in the script, it was really 4 minutes long, compared to the couple of minutes that were shown in the film, and he actually let Lois fly solo two additional times, and she gained confidence by the second attempt. It's a silly deleted scene, but Alexander Courage's use of Williams' flying sequence music was beautifully performed during the segment. Even Courage's music suffers in the editing for the scene.
Minty, I came to this video highly sceptical. But you convinced me! This could have been a much better movie! Top marks for finding all of these clips on old VHS. I still have special editions of Star trek and Star Wars VHS movies with things later got cut or removed. It's like a Mandella moment when that happens. With the snow falling, it would be great if you can do the same with Batman Returns next?
1:20 Spoiler. Me too if Christopher Reeve was given $6 million to be in this film, and they cut the budget down to $16 million, does that mean they only had $10 to make the film on? "I think in recent years, we have gotten superhero movies that are way worse" I agree. There have been way too many superhero movies, that the characters are in no way heroes. They are just extending scenes of them battling, with no real plot to speak of.
I remember my dad taking me to Superman 4 being very excited because of the first 2 being really good and 3rd being ok . After the movie my dad asked me what I thought And I was liked it wasn’t very good , he agreed and said it sucked . Thanks for the updated footage! But doesn’t change my mind, the whole being able to breathe in space did it for me , overall just not a good movie . But Christopher reeve is still my favorite Superman !
Nobody will ever top Reeve in my mind. He did both roles perfectly as Clark and Superman. I don't think Cavill was given the chance to be Clark enough to contrast.
I totally agree with you Minty when I saw it at the cinema I felt Lacey was well underused and I think the film was much better than Batman and Robin so like you said there have been other ones that were worse
funny fact, the comic book that was made as a tie-in/comic book adaptation actually had the deleted scenes in the comic book itself so it would have been shown even though it was shown in the movie itself
Hmm, it's ok I guess. Not the best one of the series though. This version seems more interesting than what we actually got. Nuclear Man is secretly in league with Skynet instead.
I remember when this movie came out on video, I was 8 in 1987, and watching it as an adult, I found it to be the better movie over Superman 3. But your right minty, this was a movie that was poorly made with all that footage shot yet wasted/unused which left the movie with too many plot holes. Weird how Superman 3 had a huge budget but was poorly received, only saving grace about that film for me was the Junkyard scene fighting with himself sort of speak which was classic comic book style and well shot. Superman 4 was cheaply made yet the better story. Thanks for filling in those plot wholes with a rough draft of what was meant to be in the film.
From 1 and 2 then 3 to 4 you can see the difference between having Donner at the helm and Lester and Furie at the helm. I'll give Furie a break because his budget was cut in half. Donner treated the property seriously.
Those missing scenes that you saw with the tornado and the nuclear missiles, I actually saw when I was younger, too. I saw the movie in the theater, but when it came out on t v, they added those scenes on some stations
Watched this video in the first round, managed to finish it right as it was taken down, apparently. I tried to back up a few seconds right at the end to double-check something in the video and it showed that the video was down. Good timing for me, I guess!
And the girl with her doll getting get by the tornado (20:37), BOY, this is a scene we also see here in Brazil; for many years, I tought it's something from the movie Twister!
I know it’s a dream but I would love for retouched with footage restored. I’ve seen enhanced footage trying to fix repairing the Great Wall with speed blurs and then heat vision to fuse it, instead of wall vision.
Minty, you aren't the only one who liked it. It was probably my 2nd most watched superman film, only beaten by the first. By the way my name is also Jeremy, you're welcome
Fun fact: He actually worked out with David Prowse, the guy that played the physical part of Darth Vader in Star Wars. He took the part very seriously and it shows
Yeah, I know about the additional scenes with Bizarro that were deleted. It doesn't matter, the film would've still been terrible. Christopher Reeve and Warner Bros. were foolish to partner with The Cannon Group/Golan-Globus, who were notorious for schlocky 1980s B-movies. But the truth is that the Salkinds ruined the Superman franchise the moment they fired Richard Donner during the filming of Superman II and replaced him with Richard Lester.
I had the same thought and posted it this morning. But whoops Minty had to reupload for some reason, but you've saved me from having to repeat myself. And yeah if they'd only kept Donner and dropped Lester we could have had several more great Superman movies than we got; including an even better Superman II and completely different movies for III and IV.
@@jasontoddman7265 I believe that according to Donner and screenwriter Tom Mankiewicz, Superman III would have been about Brainiac, but instead we got Gus Gorman and his super computer.
@@jasontoddman7265 From what I read, according to director Richard Donner and screenwriter Tom Mankiewicz, Superman III was supposed to feature Brainiac as the main villain, but instead we got Robert Vaugh's corporate villain and Richard Pryor and his super computer.
@@44excalibur Yes, I have heard that; I think on a commentary track for that movie in fact. The commentary track for Quest For Peace was hilarious and so sad at the same time.
@@jasontoddman7265 Yeah, I recall hearing Donner and Mankiewicz mentioning Superman IV. They knew that it was a pet project for Christopher Reeve, since he had a strong stance against nuclear weapons, but Donner and Mankiewicz warned him to not to give Superman any problem that he could handle himself. If Superman wanted to, he could just rid the world of nuclear weapons, but that would make him a god dictator and not a superhero.
Thought I saw this video this morning, after I wrapped up my nightly gaming session, when I was looking for ASMR videos to relax to. Later when putting together my watchlist for the day, noticed it wasn't there. Glad it returned. Also, Minty, is Superman 4 as is a great movie? Oh hell no! However, is it cheesy fun that a person can find enjoyment with? Oh hell yeah! Much like Supergirl, it is fun movie that I enjoy the cheesiness of it. Anyways, thank you, Minty, enjoyed this video as well.
This video got re-uploaded because the original version was only up mere hours till some greedy so and so put in a copyright claim, thus abusing the system!

Wow whoever that so and so is should be punished
Throw the "claimant" into the heart of the sun!
That explains it! I thought I was going crazy since I had watched half of it, came back later to finish it and it was gone!

It's so bad but it's so funny I can't help but rewatch it
Christopher Reeve is playing Superman then I'm watching it period.
I liked Superman 4 too. It was more like a comic book when they cloned Superman and created Nuclear Man.
That Great Wall of china repair vision is one of Superman’s most underrated powers
@gorillainagarden3649 the same with his projectile cellophane S on his chest.
That first Nuke Man seems more like budget store Bizarro Superman.
I believe that was the intention

We have Bizarro Superman at home.

Gene Hackman's Luthor is the greatest criminal mind the world has ever known.
No, he is not. His plots don't really make sense. Later versions of Luthor, like in the Animated Series made a lot more sense.

Why does kid Jeremy look like a young Mike Myers?🤷♂️
Well done.. great video
Did the video suffer from Algorithm cryptonite and had to recharge before coming back?

WOW this was great. I know exactly why those sub plots were cut.
And I’m not talking about the 1st and 2nd Nuclear Man sub plot.
The first Nuclear Man was played by Clive Mantle, who is still a working character actor. He appeared on Game of Thrones a few times.
I have the extended cut on a blank d.v.d. It is the better version.

A: In IIII, the robot/supercomputer should have been Brainiac.
Thank you minty this film now makes sense!
17:14 Jimmy asking Jeremy if that's his first hot dog is hilarious. As if he's eating caviar.
1:20 Spoiler. Me too
if Christopher Reeve was given $6 million to be in this film, and they cut the budget down to $16 million, does that mean they only had $10 to make the film on?
"I think in recent years, we have gotten superhero movies that are way worse" I agree. There have been way too many superhero movies, that the characters are in no way heroes. They are just extending scenes of them battling, with no real plot to speak of.
This was fantastic. It is also Hemingways birthday
Wow I didn't know that, that's pretty cool!! It is tragic about Christopher's death, he is very much missed 😢
I totally agree with you Minty when I saw it at the cinema I felt Lacey was well underused and I think the film was much better than Batman and Robin so like you said there have been other ones that were worse
Agreed. Most superhero movies today are garbage. Superman IV is still watchable for Reeve's (always) excellent performance and it's nostalgia value.
funny fact, the comic book that was made as a tie-in/comic book adaptation actually had the deleted scenes in the comic book itself so it would have been shown even though it was shown in the movie itself
Any reason this video got pulled down for a few hours? I wanna hear the story !!
Hmm, it's ok I guess. Not the best one of the series though. This version seems more interesting than what we actually got. Nuclear Man is secretly in league with Skynet instead.
Superman is one of those series that goes in order. 1 is the best, 2 is very damn close, 3 is ok and 4 is WTF!!
Should be Brainiac
I also actually like Superman IV. Love this channel too
Those missing scenes that you saw with the tornado and the nuclear missiles, I actually saw when I was younger, too. I saw the movie in the theater, but when it came out on t v, they added those scenes on some stations
So nice i had to watch it twice.
Totally agree Minty.. xx
I know it’s a dream but I would love for retouched with footage restored. I’ve seen enhanced footage trying to fix repairing the Great Wall with speed blurs and then heat vision to fuse it, instead of wall vision.
I loved this movie growing up
Minty, you aren't the only one who liked it. It was probably my 2nd most watched superman film, only beaten by the first. By the way my name is also Jeremy, you're welcome
I also seem to recall a cut scene in Kansas where Superman stops a tornado.
I liked the jokes in this one! And I've never heard of any of these deleted scenes.
I think Christopher Reeves as Superman is incredible!! Very good looking guy! ❤😊
17:45 - "I can hold it!"
"Top. Men."
"Where ya been spending your nights?"
Nice one, Minty.
Haven't seen the movies in a long time I hope they bring them out
Thought I saw this video this morning, after I wrapped up my nightly gaming session, when I was looking for ASMR videos to relax to.
I collect Movie Comic adaptations and have noticed many differences compared to theatrical releases.
Supporting the reup!
some cannon movies are excellent not all but all of them are fun
You haven't done a regular episode on this movie but this will do. Appreciate the 30+ minutes!!
Oh, I'd forgot that Jon Cryer played Lex's nephew Lenny, he mostly became an afterthought, once Lex's NM got going. 🤷
I loved this movie. I still do but I used to too!
Clark is never actually “goofy” for real him being goofy is just an act to throw people off IMO
