- Stop aquarium plants dying. Most aquarium plants are sold to be grown not to be thrown out and replaced every few week. In this video I explain how to keep your plants alive in your aquarium.
Aquarium plant need three things to grow
1. The correct lighting, at the right colour temperature and brightness.
2. Nutrients such as nitrate and iron.
3. Carbon in the form of CO2 or Gluteraldehyde

I keep fish,snails and shrimp in a 55 gal freshwater tank.
I used API Root Tabs and in a week,every shrimp I had,died.
I rechecked the ingredients on the package...nope..no copper listed.
THEN..in fine print,the package said,for complete list of ingredients,go to the API web site.
Damn...there it was...copper.A deadly element to shrimp.
So,now I thought..CO².
But will it hurt my fish.

How to unhear 😭
in my experience, you don't actually need fancy pancy lighting for plants, they do just fine with regular lights as long as it's bright enough, if you don't believe me then go to foo the flowerhorn's channel, he has like 20 tanks that doesn't use CO2, ferts, or filters, all he uses is one or two off the shelf CFL bulbs and his plants fluorish.
This wouldn’t always work, but I have seen planted tanks go well with just a good spectrum light. Because plants only absorb certain things. A visibly bright light doesn’t mean it is good it can just cause algae. We see a different spectrum to plants they have the opposite spectrum sides. Although some tanks will work without full spectrum lights most won’t because that is what mimics what the ‘sun’ would give them.

I've been an aquarium hobbyist for more than 50 years and an electrician for 45 years, this is doubly punny for me, PAR has 2 meanings in lighting.
Photosynthetically Active Radiation and for PARabolic bulb projection angle such as PAR30 would be a 30 degree projection cone.
I've always been a sterile aquarium snob for almost 50 years, just recently got into planted aquaria.
I have also been a master gardener and my house is full of plants, but for some reason never got into aquarium plants.
Maybe because I had bad luck trying to grow in aquarium gravel, but since learning to put soil under sand my fortunes have improved immeasurably.
This combines my 2 favorite hobbies, plants and fish, I'm ashamed I've never done this before.

I'm about 2 weeks into setting up another aquascaped 55g tank (never have enough tanks), plants growing very well, plan to introduce a few fish next week.
I also recently acquired an old old 75g All-Glass that has set outside in Ohio for almost 10 years, it was on its side so no water pooled in it, going to replace the inside sealant, any tips for setting it up?
I have rehabilitated old tanks before, I love the old metal frames but this is getting out of my comfort zone.

Plants dying....I have recently started with fish keeping again. Regarding plants in the aquarium...I have pulled a lot of different mosses, a few plants from the local pond including some duckweed AAAAAND it was suggested that spider plants do well too. I have four bowls in the kitchen with my plants in (just tap water) and over 3 weeks, all are doing well.with no additives WHATSOEVER. I AM JUST HOPING THAT THEY WILL THRIVE IN THE TANK WHEN I GET IT.

I think the biggest problem with root tabs is that it doesn't supply nutrients to plants that are tied to rocks or driftwood. Plants that take nutrients from roots will adapt to taking in nutrients from the water and the same goes for plants that take nutrients from the water. Plants adapt to what's available. I would say the best thing to do would to be use both if you have plants on rocks or driftwood (which lots of aquascaped tanks do). Great informative video! :)
Corrin Jessen true. I also noticed some of my plants looked bad when I took the fish out of the tank that poop makes a difference.

Great video. One correction - plants do breath oxygen. They respire just like we do, and need oxygen to do so. During daylight when they're photosynthesizing, they use more CO2 for photosynthesis than they generate from respiration (net growth). If your reaeration (i.e. pump or bubbler) is inadequate to replace that CO2 from the atmosphere, then they could run out of CO2 during daylight hours. But this won't happen at night - you need to make sure they're getting enough O2 at night to maintain healthy plants. As long as your aeration is adequate, CO2 and O2 shouldn't be the cause of dying plants.
Thomas Wilding yeah my plants are great and I just have a bubbler in my tank on 24/7, it’s a Walmart sir pump, I paid like 10$ for the whole thing (the airstrip system) and haven’t spent a penny more. You are completely right.

For more information on plant keeping using alternative methods, research “Walstad method” aquariums. I’m doing it and my plants are doing great, no co2, no fancy lights, very little money, just dirt, gravel, and a house lighting LED bulb. (If course, researching the details is integral, but this system works so well I’ve even revived plants from drained lakes that were freezing and drying out, and they have done fine!

Plants actually need 4 things: light, CO2, nutrients and ... water. Ever tried pot soil mixed into the substrate? I have, 30 years ago. My echinodorus grew like a rocket: 2ft high, with leaves the size of a dinner plate. I could not believe my eyes. BTW, the light was just one ordinary TL33 (cool white). I also had a simple trickle filter with lava rocks and a layer of filter wool, nothing fancy. I never had an artificial CO2 system.
1959Berre but do you have fish in it? Usually the soil would contain fertilisers and other chemicals potentially lethal to fish

3 inches of organic potting soil covered with an inch of coarse general construction sand works great.
I only remove the big chunks of wood from the potting mix before covering with well rinsed sand.
Gotta fertilize though, the soil mix has a bit of compost in it but that won't last long term, I'm using fertilizer capsules from Aquarium Coop.
Right I’ll add some water to my aquarium now might help my fish survive too 😂

plants dont need expensive lighting. something like nicrew plated led light is perfect and it's the perfect colour 6500k. when I first started, plants used to grow under t12 bulbs which are not too bright. the only tune you really need expensive lighting is when your growing red plants.
Light, co2, and fertilizer. I would never have figured that out on my own.

Actually enjoyed that. The trouble with upgrading lights, is i'm sure some of us have tanks that are a little more difficult to put new lights on. Like in my case i have a Juwel Trigon 190, which is a corner unit with purpose built covers. Unless i wanted to remove the top part and risk my fish going sky diving. :)

I just bought a beautiful plant that grows on a root. Unfortunately I don't remember the name.
I have had problems with plants turning transparent or get really small white areas, so I first thought they got sunburned. My light is very bright.

I have a plant that was in the tank of a fish that died a few yrs ago, so I put it into a little jar for a whole year or so and replanted it in a new tank. It was doing super good since September, but it recently started to die!

this is mostly right except one thing the temperature of the light makes no difference really, only the amount of light, so choose whatever light spectrum looks best for your fish and plants
Light temperature is incredibly important. You can't just put whatever light you want over and expect it to be good for growing plants. Plants need a specific wavelength of light to hit chlorophyll absorbtion peaks and accessory pigments. If you don't provide this plants can't photosynthesis...
Unless you are referring specifically to the "heat" temperature then no obviously doesn't matter. I am referring to "colour temperature"

When you got your plant's were they emerse or submersed ( sub being fully grown underwater?)
At least in the pet shop they were under water and healthy.
@@tylerpickersgill It also depends on how long the pet shop had them for. The supplier where the petshop gets their plants from grows their plant partially out of water.The roots are in water but the leaves are grown out of water because there's more co2(carbon dioxide) in the air than underwater. So plant leaves will have leaves that can extract co2 from the air. But if you put put that same plant underwater then the leaves(which are not design to extract o2 from water) will die down and new leaves will grow at the base of plant that will be able to get co2 from the water. Make sure they're not terrarium plants. Find out from the pet store if they were using co2 * If youre using fertilizer substrate then you don't need tabs Yet . When you say good lighting *what light is it? Is it just white light or does it have good color spectrum? * What plants are you looking to grow? Some plants are low, medium and high light plant. They all require different light requirements.

If your pH is above 8 your co2 will be low and too much light and nutrients will cause algea outbreak . The best keep healthy plants is to balance light, nutrients, and co2.
I have 30 day old new tank with palnts and all are dying. Don't know why and what to do. Will normal aerator will help ? I know my light is a good juwel one I use it for 6 hours daily. All the leaves started become brown from the bottom and now only the stems are there. Only one surviving is a hardier plant. Don't know the name.

Most 5000 - 7000 kelvin lights at the right wattage will grow plants 6500k should be best

Are the ferro tabs okay to use with fish in the tank?

Yes for both
First I set up the tank without fish and I added root tablets and some top fin liquid to help plants grow but they still weren’t doing good. So I added a temporary betta to maybe help the plants but still nothing and all plants are slowly dying
I also added a extra light to the tank and plants are Anubis’s, umbrella plant and rosette sword

@@Dazai_s terrible...... al the plants were slowly dyeing, I finally got the fish that were permanently going to live there and they slowly died because ammonia levels were high from plants decaying

I dont know what went wrong my aquatic plants keeps on turning brown I’ve been dosing it with API by Lead zone I had double the dose hopefully it works.
I have the same problem with Milfoil and other thin leaves plants. They are light brown at the base and going green the last 4-5 inches. I have a piece of driftwood because of Cardinal Tetra. The water is slightly brown. And the lights are LEDs, heaps of them spewing out such brightness that blinds me when the lid is lifted for cleaning of the tank. I think Less are not good for the fix either. They are too bright and might harm the fish eyes. What do you think? Plus, plant food seem to boost an increase of algae on the grass and plant leaves. I should stop feeding plants.

do we really need CO2 supplement if we have many fishes in a tank?
all depends on your lights, if you have higher tier lights you will need co2 otherwise you will get all types of algae. co2/water exchange occurs naturally but if you up the lights and co2, plant growth is comfortably accelerated by a factor of up to x6. even if you dont care how fast your plants grow, know that once co2 is depleted from the water and growth halts thats when algae thrive from the leftover nutrients.
main point is the more you accelerate plant growth the less algae you will have.
I disagree, I've never used C02 and I have a fish room full of plants. Substrate is huge, I use miracle grow organic. Be sure it is completely organic! I cap it with sand or gravel. I also dose fertz every week or so. I have LED lighting & my plants GROW! No C02. Do some research on low tech aquarium & how to care for plants without c02
The problem with co2 is its an artificial adjustment you’d never see in nature. If you have a fishless tank then ok, but if you have fish then adding co2 can be a problem. It lowers the pH of the water so you need to take care there, and if your co2 system stops delivering, you can get a pH spike that may be detrimental to both fish and plants. It’s better to choose fish and plants that are suitable for your aquarium water chemistry.

I have that fluval stratum soil, I have a expensive c02 system, liquid fertilizer, and a bright LED light. All my plants die in my tank. I have bought everything there is to buy for these damn plants and I can’t get them to sit thrive in my tank… it’s the saddest thing I have NO idea what I’m doing wrong /:

May I ask....my newly set up sparkling gourami tank has Monte Carlo I’ve planted on one section of growth substrate using each lil stem spacing about a cm apart so it would grow in over the coming months. Parts are turning transparent or melting and looking brownish. It’s been in the tank just over a week along with some narrow serrated type leaf plant green n purplish under neath leaves. I also added some frogbit I purchased only 3 days ago to give more shelter for spawning (2 pairs of gouramis have spawned in 4 days) so they needed a lil more protection I felt. Frogbit doesn’t cover the whole surface but it is over about half ...maybe that’s too much. Even the frogbit has a few leaves looking transparent and a few look actually brown as if burnt from the light so I’ll not have the light on as much during day and I’ll rehome half of the frogbit into another tank or vase.
Any idea on the Monte Carlo...I don’t want to gravel clean as I’ll suck half of it up, it was hard getting it to stay in substrate n not float away. Do I just leave it as is and hope it starts to get its roots in and picks up a lil...? I don’t want to rush in and think...”oh I’ll just rip all those dead looking bits of plants out’ when there’s a possibility that’s it’s simply early days after being planted and these things can happen then after another couple of weeks it starts to spring back”
Hi assuming that the light is of the correct spectrum and intensity for plants I would doubt that it's too bright or on for too long. 8-10 hrs photo period is ideal. I had a similar problem with my nano planted with plants going brown and dying. I have solved this issue by adding seachem flourish excel liquid co2 and occasionally adding liquid ferts as well. Now my plants are growing a healthy green and spreading. This is probably the solution for you.
@@EverydayAquarist it's only been running for week n half, monte carlo been there a week. The lights bright but it's not RGB type.. But LFS friend said it was sufficient it cost &$75 fir 60 cm led. I can tell u brand n details tomorrow. You don't always have to have co2, many Aquarists don't... I won't be. I used expensive growth substrate and have added flourish this week. The filter is a very low power atm as I'm breeding the gouramis and they don't appreciate much movement. In a week or so il change filter to slightly more powerful one to circulate water more. This tanks not focused on "plants" really, its more so to focus on the fish and to see how breeding went.
I will try the liquid co2 for sure, the co2 canisters I've tried many years ago n very fiddly, I really wasn't sure how to do it all.
I do feel the less power filter has had something to do with it and some of the frogbit on surface looks like it's burnt in aces so is it possibly the lights too bright or just on for a lol too long? Who knows.
I do have a lil "fuzz algae" on a few leaves so il be removing this sections as soon as the fry have hatched from under those leave and its safe to remove them. While the fry are so tiny n young (if any survive in weeks to come) I just wanna make sure they're OK n I don't want to interfere too much with plants they're sheltering in.
Honestly I think it needs a good syphon n gentle gravel clean and for any what's ever melted, fuzzed up n brown leaves etc trimmed off n removed. Thinking that will help alot.

Thanks for the vid, so I've a 240ltr rio tank with only three swords in a white sand substrate three root tabs and flourish daily lights are standard juwel t5 i think ,on for about 4 hrs a day what would you change if anything ?
More plants! Maybe a longer photo period 6-8 hours depending on algae

I have a 55 gallon with some pothos hangover the back, water onion, water lily, aponogeton, and hornwart.
And I'm curious how much the hornwort is suppressing the growth of the other aquarium plants.
Anyone able to help?
I should point out that one of my two water lilies is doing far and a way better than everything else but constantly losing leaves and stems. The pothos is doing fine the two onions and the aponogeton are stalled out the hornwort is doing fine and I finally beat back the algae bloom so I'm opening my window again but with almost complete shade over my aquarium. It used to get full sun and it turned bright neon green.
Is gas CO2 really more expensive than liquid where you’re at? It’s opposite where I live in the US. I pay $30 USD for a 20lb tank and will last me almost 1 and a half years.

I have just started a tank put all new plants in and they are slowly deteriorating and I'm using fluval straham, not using co2 but I didn't in my other tank and only had sand as substrate and they was all ok. Is I just the beginning cycle or are they dying ! PLEASE HELP ! thanks

I disagree about substrate not needing to be fed. I have read that all soil like substrates only carry a small amount of nutrients which the plant use up quickly leaving nothing left. Do you agree to this? I have never heard of a substate that doesnt have to be fed as they are a CEC high or low. I have just bought caribsea eco complete, ferts and root tabs. After 20 years of sand im goinf to aquascape. Wish me luck.
I read that substrate can give out nutrient for 2-3months depends on the quality so you don't have to add fertilizer when you start, however it will deplete over time like you said..mine had a very low nutrient at the start because of cheap substrate i bought :')

I just bought seachem flourish and iron, but they were like a dark brown rather than the "usual" clear. Do I return it immediately or do I keep it?

All the flourish I have used is clear in the bottle and the liquid that spills onto the outside of the bottle turns brown over time - my guess is exposure to oxygen. I dont know if this changes the effectiveness, but my guess is the seal on your bottle was not great or if is maybe old stock.
I did my research, buy low tech plants, plants that are said to be immortal, why do they keep dying? Anubias, java fern, amazon swords. The only thing i can keep alive is java moss.

Depends on how many fish you have and the type of plants you're keeping.
Seachem Iron might be all the nutrients and fertilizer you need...and unlike Phosphates and Nitrogen,it won't ever enhance algae growth..it diminishes it by making aquarium plants bigger and stronger with thicker leaves -outcompetes algae.
I wouldn't doubt for a second it makes the fish healthier too to have iron supplement the foods I feed.

I bought two amazon swords and and one already died and the second seems to be on its way out
Might be a little late, but amazon swords along with many other plants are grown out if water first. When you plant them under water they need to shed their "air leaves" and grow new ones for living underwater. It could be they are dying, but don't give up on them too quick. Give them a chance to grow new leaves if the rest of the plant is not dead.

Hi, hope you help me, I just bought some aquarium plants and grasses 1.5 week ago , the plants have started turning yellow and the grasses became a bit translucent and brown and some of them died. I provide them about 4-5 hours of LED light everyday and have the filter on for 24x7.i haven't added any fertilizers and I haven't added any fish. Is there any chance of making them live?
The temperature was 29 degrees Celsius. And there are white tiny worms in my tank, I think those are detritus worms after researching, pls help, what to do now, I am just a begginer. Hope you help me . 🙁🙁🙁
what was the steps for good plants? 1. light. 4-5 hours is very little, raise it to atleast 8-10 hours. - 2. fertilizer - 3. co2, alot of the grasses you can buy for the aquarium need co2 to grow healthy and nice. Also the light you have might not be good enough for plants, but try to adjust the lenght first.

@@vivekanadansrikanth6652 theres some plants out there that have bigger needs than other plants, some need alot more light and co2 to thrive. I reccomend you to search for beginner plants or easy aquarium plants here on youtube or google and choose one of them. hopefully you will have more luck.

@@vivekanadansrikanth6652 no idea how normal grass do underwater. you have grass looking aquarium plants like, dwarf gaigrass and Lilaeopsis brasiliensis, but they need alot of light and co2 to thrive. if you want something to cover the bottom part, you can google "carpeting plants". maybe you find something that is easier to do if you are new to plants.

Aquarium plant melting is invented by the LFS to sell more aquarium plants!
Of course no! What happen if customers feel dissapointed or scamed? They just stop shopping. Good stores want you to succeed and increase your collection, but casual stores that don't care will sell bad quality and you need extra work for good results.
Oxygen Theif melt is normal for plants in new aquariums. It’s just how they transition. I had some that have completely melted away all their original leaves in a matter of weeks, but in a few more days are now 2x as big as before! And all I use is actual soil, a crappy led bulb, and no co2.
Most commercial growers grow the plants with just the roots emersed in water, when you get it and submerge it , the leaves freak out and melt, it is normal, you are buying the stem and roots, leaves will grow back.

Those fertilizer capsules from Aquarium Coop or the clay hockey pucks from just about everywhere seem to work the best IMO, no ferts in the water column.

Hmmm, I think there isn't anything dumber than using glutaraldehyde in your aquarium. I think you would be better using a broken heater instead, at least you would get the instant feedback!
There is no such thing a 'liquid' Co2.
Sure there is under high pressure and or low temps. Couldn't really add it to your aquarium, but still.

@@willliam1420 best you could convince me of is a liquid with solid carbon in suspension. To melt elemental carbon it needs to be heated to 3600°C and pressurized simultaneously, which last I checked is bad for your fish.

Thats a tiny bottle of Co2 10Lb tank is large 20lb is massive and 5lbs is standered. And BTW the nutrients in the Substrate will deplenish over time its not an endless supply lol you will eventually need root Tabs. Why create a video with false information
