If your room air conditioners excessively cooling than set temperature, if compressor not turn on or turn off, then it might be thermostat problem, it easy to replace but try once if you are having proper knowledge and Never work with live power supply in any Electric Home appliances.

Why did you not clean the coils? you said the unit was very old and I need of a cleaning.
Recommended to get cleaning spray from local HVAC spare shop after cleaning fins can be opened by combing for old units.
Do those 3 prongs just fit in somewhere or did you have to cut wires?
It will connects with the existing matching circuits, need not to cut the wire's.
@@dsouzacoffeeland2647 thank you. Gonna try this..got 3 window acs all of them just say 64 then slowly rise to like 80 then going back down repeatedly at night time. Compressor turning on every time it reaches set point then shutting off when it goes back down. Curious it this could be solved with a new thermostat. They are old acs
