These videos are a gold mine of information. They allow home owners to resolve simple issues (and better understand their home) without having a technician charge $80-$125 to flip a switch. Saves embarrassment also LOL. Thank you sharing these videos, I really could have used them earlier in my life!
I totally agree. Not a homeowner but I have central air with my own circuit breaker and my furnace and hot water tank is in my closet. I found out to get it back on. The steps to do. Less then 5 mins.
A month ago , my neighbor's AC unit would not engage. He called the HVAC people to come. They came, investigated (?) and blamed the thermostat as being defective ( almost new Honeywell WIFI version). I gave him my "old" battery thermostat (replaced with an ECOBEE by me, after watching your videos). The replacement didn't work either. I went to the outdoor unit and found no 24V signal, and then to the control board and determined ( per your videos) it was still functional. I pulled the 3A fuse and , voila, it had blown. Put in my spare and the AC fired right up ! What had happened is that they had a painter in and he removed the thermostat without shutting off the power. The fuse saved the board. And, yes, I have been guilty of accidentally flipping the furnace switch off , but now I always check that first !! Thanks for all you do.
Jay, I finally repaired my HVAC, I'm so happy. I followed your videos and it helped entirely. I'll share with you my experience as it was an entire adventure: First the AC unit was not cooling. When checked outside the fan was not getting any signal to be turned on, so I thought it was just a change needed in the capacitor. I went to home depot on a friday 7pm and I got extremely pissed becaus they don't have anything in physical for hvac, and online takes days to deliver. So we gave up and went somewhere else to sleep for the night because it was so hot. Next day in the morning I looked for a hvac parts store and found one, and bought the capacitor. I followed your videos, I installed it, and it "worked". The fan was now not spinning! I took the motor out and it was so jammed and rusted, rushed back to the hvac store to get a new motor, they gave me a "universal" motor with 4 cables (my old unit had 3 cables). Followed your videos, cut the brown and white as you instructed, reconnected everything (sounds easy but took hours to even pull the fan out of the motor it was extremely stuck). Even your technique of using sand paper worked beautifully. now with new capacitor and condenser fan motor it was the moment of truth. I turned on and it wasn't spinning!! I thought I was lost because I thought I had done something wrong and was about to give up and just call a techinician. I checked more of your videos and found how to bypass the termostat by using the contactor. I pressed the contactor and it worked! the fan started spinning and immediately started cooling, BUT the contactor wasn't staying plunged. so now I checked your contactor video, had to run again to the hvac store, got a new contactor, followed the instructions again reconnected the new contactor and BAM everything was working perfectly!! I was surprised how everything worked and how by just looking at your videos we did it! I should say that, a technician did really came to our place before, but he was charging us 2-2.5k because he said the compressor was old and not working and is better to get a new one. But that sounded sketchy AF. Anyway, I'm extremely happy everything worked and I now feel confident to engage into more repairs myself Thanks!! PD: I spent 123 dollars in total.
This was a great comment to read! Thank you for taking the time to share your story and major kudos for not giving up and seeing it through till the end! I'm happy to hear that you got it working and my videos helped in the process. The whole sequential way you approached that was awesome! I am assuming you don't have prior experience doing this so what you were able to accomplish is pretty incredible! My hats off to you my friend, stay cool and may God bless you in all things!
You just saved me my friend!!!! Honeywell WIFI thermostat was shut off and I never realized it, no power to it. I watched through your video and went and checked the circuit breaker, and I was on for the furnace. I then went and looked at my furnace switch down where my HVAC unit is, and it was shut off! I just had someone in my house doing a termite inspection, and he must have turned it off in his poking around! Thanks for saving us!
I love to hear that! Glad you were able to save money and fix this stuff yourself. You're welcome! TH-cam pays me ad revenue for all these videos so no one owes me anything. 😄
Thanks for your video. We had a repair guy out. He said he fixed the issue. Then it stopped cooling. He came back said fixed again. Then screen on thermostat went blank. Could not re-set. The repair guy left the panels off, but I did not think anything of it because it was working. I thought the button was a re-set. Your video showed me it was the panel switch. I found some tape that had come off the switch. the repair guy had taped it so he could see was up without having to put panels on. Then he left. The tape came off and shut the thing down. We have been without air for over a week in a heat advisory. Maybe tonight we have a full night of air. Thanks.
I've actually been to calls where they didn't pay their gas or electric bill. Also had another one where I went for a no heat that the customer had forgotten that they intentionally shut their gas bill off because the furnace was the only gas item and they didn't want to pay the service bill during the summer when not using any gas at all. Lol
I have an Ecobee thermostat which went blank. I watched this video and also a few more videos about Ecobee. I just pulled out the unit and plugged it back in. Voila ! It rebooted and working !
We just had a big storm in the Seattle area. I used a generator because the lights went out. When the power was restored by the power company, my thermostat was blank. It had been working all through the storm. I discovered that a water pump for the furnace was not working. It has a regular plug which was plugged into the electrical box with the switch to the gas furnace. I decided that the GFIC was broken. I replaced it , which made the pump work and my blank screen came to life. Thank you for posting this video. I would not have figured it out without the idea that the pump sends a signal to the integrated furnace control board. I think my generator my have been the culprit. I could tell that my lights were flickering when it was on. I think the bad power from the generator caused the GFIC to fail.
I called the ac guy het told me I needed a new coil I watched your video and it was just a simple waster in the little tube I opened it and drained it and saved $900 from a scammer thank you.
A great presentation, self explanatory and very easy for DIYs try troubleshoot!!! Before watching this video, I already tried out a few things of my own, will follow up on this video, hopefuly I am able to bring my thermo to life.. Tnx a lot.
Accumulated dust debris clogged the drain and switched open the overflow safety switch, and turned off the thermostat. I pushed out the debris and manually reset the drain switch. Thermostat automatically reset itself. It’s been 95 F when this happened. Thank you for the valuable information.
Great video like always keep them coming 🫡 also happy holidays to you and your family. Merry Christmas. Stay safe out there my friend and thank you for sharing all the great knowledge with us. I truly appreciate it.
Great explanation of all 10 issues. I have a NEST thermostat. Many experienced HVAC technicians that post videos, don’t like/hate nest. I love mine to adjust temperatures from my bed before I get up or remotely (outside the home). I think it also saves $$. Occasionally (once every couple weeks) the remote feature on the App DOESN’T adjust the temperature or fan remotely. I go old school and walk to the stadt to manually adjust. Common is connected. I THINK, this happens when an energy saver feature is activated. Minor inconvenience either way. U have any thoughts?
I also have a Nest and I love it. It's working great and when my a/c had a problem, it told me and I was able to fix the problem myself. I haven't had any problems with it at all.
I used a Nest for about 5 years until I got my new furnace. It started giving me issues with multiple furnace starts and short- cycling ( I had the C wire). I put my $30 Emerson back on; no more problems. That's why the techs don't like to them. They're power hungry and can cause problems with the control board.
@mjohnslo Thank you! The earlier generations of the Nest thermostat had a lot of bugs so they immediately got a bad reputation which they haven't quite been able to fully get rid of yet. They are nice thermostats if they aren't having issues. I don't know off the top of my head what the issue is in your case but if you think it's when an energy feature is activated, try testing that theory. Put it in energy saving mode every Saturday for example and see if this issue starts happening regularly on the same day. Here is a good article for further reading: www.serviceexperts.com/blog/how-to-disable-nest-seasonal-savings
Yes! That could be another reason. Thank you for mentioning it in the comments. I rarely see transformers in the furnace fail but if it goes bad it could definitely make the screen go blank.
There is another way to verify if the problem is the thermsotat itself. Unplug the furnace or turn off the power switch first amd foremost. Then remove the thermostat. If summer, take cooling wire (normally yellow) and power wire (notmally red) and twist them together. You need to make sure that they are the correct wires by looking at the wires on the board. If in winter, use power wire sgin but this time you want the heating wire (normally white). Again verify you have the two corrdct wires. Then re-apply power. If ot cycles through correctly, then the problem is the thermostat. I have used this many times in the field and in my own home
With a leak you really only have two options. Repair the leak or replace the unit. You could also try refilling it and hope it's a small leak. Maybe it will last you the rest of the season if you get lucky. (if there's a leak it will continue to leak out even if you are not using the unit in the winter)
Adding #11- check the corrosion on the spring connector to the batteries. I noticed mine were corroded so I used a Q-tip with baking soda and water to gently clean the corroded springs, keeping everything dry around it, then re-insert of the batteries. Display came on and everything working perfectly.
Jay - So sad to see the condition of areas on Maui. I forget which island you guys ended up getting a house, but hope you guys and your brother and sister and all are okay.🤞 Take care. -Jeff
Thank you for the concern Jeff! Fortunately all of us are on Big Island and the fires here were not nearly as bad as in Maui. Really sad what happened there.
Regarding Item #9 - what if the reading is i.e. 70V? I have a 30 year old Bryant Evolution Furnace and Heat Pump and one of their digital/analog thermostats. Just last week I tired to replace the Bryant thermostat with a Honeywell 24V thermostat - but it did not work as it won't if the voltages it receives are higher than 28V. Is there a switch on the furnace to limit the voltage to the thermostat? Also BTW, my system only has metal (cleanable) filters (including electrostatic ones), and I wanted your comments on those types of filters as your filter videos just discussed the paper ones.
Hey Jay I have a question could you make a video of why when you turn your air conditioner on it doesn’t blow any cold air it only blows hot air. The reason why I asked you if you could make a video on this topic is because I ran into this problem I would really appreciate it if you could make a video about why hot air blows when the air conditioner is on. You rock brother.
Excellent video what’s strange about mine is ½ screen is dim. Inside temp is left hand reads correctly 79f. Set system temp I manually and do not use timer to schedule temperature I just use it for manual up-and-down leave if it’s midday, I’m gonna set it at like 80 or 82 but generally, I keep it between 76 and 78. The right hand side it’s like part of the numbers you can read the first digit you read that it has sent it to 77 or 78 where is the eight or seven part of it halfway disappeared
WORD TV! I have a thermostat working without C wire, want to replace it do to the set point buttons don’t work. I am replace it for Honeywell ST76, I have the C wire but when I do the right connections do not power on. I get 23 volts from the furnace and by the thermostat, I thought is a bad thermostat and bought Honeywell Home RTH9580WF01 and have the same result. For now I am using my old thermostat so is none of the advises you said, please can you help me?
Never mine. I found the problem and for all let me tell you. My house had and old Furnace so when the Tech replace it for a high efficiency he cut the cables in the midle of the new unit going to the thermostat so he put wire nuts to connect all the wires to the unit but did not connetc the C wire to my unit and that's why I was not getting my 28volts on the C and R wire. He did it thinking we later on will call the same company to come and do this problem. My new Thermostat is working fine now with C wire.
I want to ask you, are there special types of television for places near the sea? I suffer from a problem of humidity when the TV is left on for a long time without working in a house that I do not go to in the summer
Let me tell you what is happening in my house now, in case you can use the topic for a video. Topic: very bad smell in kitchen. Smells like sewage. Concern: sewage backing up? Something broken? Action: I looked at both bathrooms, smelled the drains, checked plumbing below sinks for leaks. One toilet is not in use for now (leaky fill valve), so I put water in the bowl to fill the p-trap, even though there's no smell. Smell appeared to be coming from kitchen drain. No leak underneath. I called the town, they came out to check the outside clean out part, told me "their end is clear and my water is running fine through the system. Get a plumber." No money for plumber. Didn't want to do this to my drain, but I felt stuck, so I poured one pot boiling water into drain. I mixed baking soda and vinegar, put that in drain, waited 10 minutes, poured another pot of boiling water into drain. Result: smell still in kitchen. Definitely not from sink drain. I was worried that maybe sewer line was broken under my house (I live on a slab, no basement). Can you imagine the jack hammering inside my home, and the massive cost? Feeling a bit desperate. Next action: TH-cam searching. Suffice it to say that I found a possible answer, so much better than broken line. I was shocked, never heard this before: the drip tray under the refrigerator can be the source of the smell. So I sniffed around again, and this appears to be a strong possibility. I should say that the fridge has not been functioning properly for years, not keeping cold enough, and the freezer part doesn't work. I read about how to clean the drip tray. Fridge drip trays are bolted to the bottom of the fridge, they can't just be pulled out and cleaned. I I can not safely tip the fridge myself. Only had one person to call to help with that, but he just passed away. Plan of action: Since I can't get to the tray, and since the fridge hasn't worked right for a long time, it might be time to throw the fridge out. I really really love that fridge. What a shame. I can't go without a fridge because I keep insulin in there, I will have to get another one, even if it's just a mini fridge. New full size fridges are very expensive. Bonus: I just had a discussion with my endocrinologist about how can my A1c be out of control if I'm doing everything right? Possible answer: fridge isn't cold enough to keep my insulin safe. All this time my health has been deteriorating, and this could be one of the reasons. My insulin is rendered ineffective by improper storage temperature. How crazy is this. Perhaps now the doctor will ask her other patients if their fridges are working properly, and suggest that they get fridge thermometers to keep watch over the air temp. Summation: Don't panic. Calmly find source of smell, using free or inexpensive methods. Amazingly, fridge drip tray can be source of sewage smell, so don't skip that possibility. Cheap fix if you have reliable help to safely tip the fridge to clean drip dray, or if you can afford a plumber to do it for you. After cleaning, leave it off for a few hours before turning back on. It's possible this procedure could damage the fridge. Protect yourself - don't let anyone talk you into massive expense replacing sewer lines without proof that that is the cause. It's probably something simple. Don't let the distress over that over smell cause you to act in haste or desperation. This is very long-winded, but it might be worth it. Save people from desperate, unnecessary expenses. Save some diabetic lives. Thanks for listening, Jay. Love your channel. Best to you and your family!
Wow, that was quite the story and the drain pan being the culprit was totally unexpected! You likely have an older fridge because on most refrigerators it's actually pretty easy to get to the drain pan. Pull the fridge out, take the back panel off and you can see it. Sorry to hear about all the trouble you went through to figure that out! Plus the insulin going bad. Thank you for taking the time to share your story! I dont know if I can turn that into a video but your comment may just save someone's day. God bless you and give you wisdom in all that you do!
@@WordofAdviceTV Thank you, Jay! I will pull the fridge out and take the back off to check if my tray can be pulled out (fridge is 24 yrs old). I will vacuum it while the back is off too. That can't hurt. Thank you for replying, and I hope this information is helpful to you and your viewers. I don't want anyone to be taken advantage of. Have a great day, and a great weekend!
What’s the “Orange colored wire” for. I have the Honeywell Home thermostat and I connected the blue wire to the red power source and it all appears to be working fine. Just curious as to what to do with that orange wire.
Hello 👋 🫂 my number one good buddy Jay 👍 good to see you I was just thinking about you earlier this morning wondering how you all were doing. It's been a rough time here lately my aunt passed away this morning, she is the aunt that gave me the jaguar..she got sick and went to the hospital and her daughter my cousin called me yesterday and said the Dr called her to come to the hospital as soon as possible because she wasn't expected to make it through the day yesterday so after she told me I drove to the hospital to see her and she was in and out of conscious but I got to talk to her and see her. She went into sepsis shock and her organs were shutting down yesterday but my cousin called me and said that she went very peaceful..take care buddy I love you and your family Jay. Take care and God bless you and your family. Oh almost forgot tell everyone I said hello 👋
Aloha David! Sorry to hear about your aunt passing away.. I thank God that you were able to see her and talk to her one last time. It's a blessing that she went peacefully. My condolences for your loss my friend. Thank you for the update, may the Lord bless you and family and comfort you during your season of grieving. You take care as well, sending you greetings from Hawaii too! 🌴🌴🌴
What if the heater/AC unit is so old that it has no door open switch or control board which thermostat is wired into. Was on prior to extending the wire. Wired back together (with thermostat unplugged), plugged back in, no screen. Will double check tomorrow what I learned from you and communicate findings. Thanks
#11 Thermostats like the one shown in video can be flakey in its connection between the two halves. Pulling off and replacing, sometimes wiggling it after checking the batteries, makes it work. Sheesh.
FOR ME it was as simple as the power switch on the lower left side of the furnace. got a flash light gave it a shine found that switch in 5 seconds or less...ty
Greetings . What the common wire and C spot is not being used . The blue wire is rolled back and the common space is not being used . Should hook it up ?
Hi. The screen on my thermostat is blank. I replaced batteries, nothing. A couple days was back on. Now blank again…but, if I press the temperature up, it comes on (not the screen, the furnace). Also, if I turn fan on it comes on. Any ideas 💡. Thanks so much.
I get 28 volts between red and blue wire. My thermostat comes on and within 10-15 minutes powers downs and restarts again. On and off. I have replaced the thermostat Honeywell T9580 WiFi for a brand new one and still got the same issue. Fuse is good, wires are connected. Could it be the transformer on its way out.? Spiking or dropping voltage causing the thermostat to come on and off.? Thx
request your learned opinion: I have multiple thermostats that always seem to have problems with the temp up or down buttons. Is there anything to help or fix this inconsistent depressing of the buttons . The rest of furnace is fine . Again it's just the stubborn up and down temp buttons. batteries are new. depressing button contact-- are not working properly. Rather than buying new replacement thermostats , ( 3 x 60 - 100 dollars ) I would seek a fix. Am I delusional ? Just asking your opinion I have one of the old round simple thermostats that always works *technology*

Another helpful video Jay, keep ‘em coming. Stay well my friend . 👍🙏
Thank you sir! You too, have a blessed new week! 👍👍
Accumulated dust debris clogged the drain and switched open the overflow safety switch, and turned off the thermostat. I pushed out the debris and manually reset the drain switch. Thermostat automatically reset itself. It’s been 95 F when this happened. Thank you for the valuable information.
Thank you! It was the fuse.
Thank you for sharing! The switch in the attic adjacent to the furnace was off.
Thanks for good info
Wonderful presentation!!!! Thanx

Thanks a lot for your great video and helpful info
Great job what about a bad transformer thanks for the viedo
Yes! That could be another reason. Thank you for mentioning it in the comments. I rarely see transformers in the furnace fail but if it goes bad it could definitely make the screen go blank.
Same, I just had this happen
This is incredible. Thank you.
Hope you and your family and friends are safe ; I believe you had settled in Maui HI.
Thank you! Fortunately we are on Big Island. There were a few fires here too but not nearly as bad as Maui had it.
Thank you very much! My problem was an open door switch
Absolutely love you!!!!
Excellent. Thanks
exelent video
Thank you!
Thank You my man
Thanks for posting this clip..
You're welcome!
Well spoken
I came for the DIY advice, I stayed for the bad jokes. 👍🏻
Haha yeah... The jokes at the end are hit or miss but sometimes people get a good laugh out of them. 😄
@@WordofAdviceTV I love your sense of humor. Never stop laughing!
Good stuff, thank you
Hay what do you recommend if you have a refrigerant leak in your thermos but you don’t want to replace it
With a leak you really only have two options.
Display came on and everything working perfectly.

one more question... Can control board in front case go bad? When I put new face on, solved the problem. Left old base on.
Yes, usually it is the face piece that goes bad so if you are replacing the thermostat with the same model, leaving the old base on is totally fine. 👍
My thermostat room temperature reading not working properly. SO I raised temperature higher to get furnace going. Will buy new thermostat tomorrow.
Nice job
Thank you!
Thanks brother! There are quite a few things that can cause that and I do have a video on it already: th-cam.com/video/6jsm3tWmoPU/w-d-xo.html
@@WordofAdviceTV Thanks brother I appreciate your content and I look forward to watching your next video.
Overflow cut-off switch.
Should be #1.
Perhaps in some states that is the case. Most of my experience comes from Minnesota and most units there don't even have an overflow switch. 🤷♂️
You rock, Thanks! Loved the joke BTW
Thanks!
Excellent video
what’s strange about mine is ½ screen is dim. Inside temp is left hand reads correctly 79f.
Set system temp I manually and do not use timer to schedule temperature
I just use it for manual up-and-down leave if it’s midday, I’m gonna set it at like 80 or 82 but generally,
I keep it between 76 and 78.
The right hand side it’s like part of the numbers you can read the first digit you read that it has sent it to 77 or 78 where is the eight or seven part of it halfway disappeared
Thanks❤
What size ac do u recommend for a 1000 square foot house? Thank you
0utstanding!👌
Thank you! 🙂
2:54 MAGIC! HE'S A WITCH!
And also the LCD screen is just shot. Common with Honeywell controllers. It takes a hard knock with a fingernail to wait it up!
Oh that's a great tip! I have actually never tried that before, will need to give it a try.
I have ecobee thermostat went dark, no 24v(it is 24v ac or 24v Dc?)
24v ac. You will need to figure out why its not getting power from the furnace.
20gauge and lower wire is especially troublesome very brittle and hard to notice
Thank you for the tip! Another good thing to pay attention to.
What if the heater/AC unit is so old that it has no door open switch or control board which thermostat is wired into. Was on prior to extending the wire. Wired back together (with thermostat unplugged), plugged back in, no screen. Will double check tomorrow what I learned from you and communicate findings. Thanks
My thermostat backlight works sometimes, other times not. Any thoughts?
#11 Thermostats like the one shown in video can be flakey in its connection between the two halves. Pulling off and replacing, sometimes wiggling it after checking the batteries, makes it work. Sheesh.
My thermostat is hard wired. The unit is still working, the screen is blank. Thete is not a tripped breaker. Any suggestions?
Same
FOR ME it was as simple as the power switch on the lower left side of the furnace. got a flash light gave it a shine found that switch in 5 seconds or less...ty
Greetings . What the common wire and C spot is not being used . The blue wire is rolled back and the common space is not being used . Should hook it up ?
Where is the control board located on the attic unit?
Thx
My thermostat goes blank most of the time, and comes back on occasionally. Any ideas on what to do?? Thanks
I replaced the batteries, same deal.
request your learned opinion: I have multiple thermostats that always seem to have problems with the temp up or down buttons.
