I would say HD560s are incredible. For this price you get it all, honestly. They even are balanced ready, though connector is a bit tricky with this twist lock. Very comfortable, very detailed, very even, with sub-bass, with great mid, if only they could also fold, like HD 380 pro) They also surprisingly easy to drive for this impedance. For work, for music, if you want just very good headphones, without aiming to the hi-fi as hobby - you do not need to go higher at all. It will be better to use something, DAC or amp, but even with regular laptop/pc/decent phone headphone output it will work.
BUT 660S just better. If you want to go to the rabbit hole - 600 line is obvious in this comparison. With them you need something, DAC, amp, whatever, especially with 600 and 650.
In my opinion if you don't know whether you need HD 600 line, you just heard it is better - just take HD 560s and be happy)

I think that, Due to the impedance on these headphones, to get the full potential of this sound you really need to connect them to an amp. Otherwise it's the same as testing a Tesla on triple-A batteries. The 560 are probably the best headphones out there if the criteria you are using is quality-to-price ratio, but the sound on the 660s is better so, if money is no object, obviously go for the latter. You're obviously also paying for a better visual design but the sound is definitely better. Edit: A DAC will also do the job as pointed out by one of the comments below but it must be a powered, standalone DAC, not an onboard chip.

I managed to find an old (1980's) HD 560 Ovation -with 300 Ohms resistance- which I have been running on my on-board dac without amp for a few months now without issues. To be fair I don't have much to compare it to, but compared to the gaming headsets I ran before this, it's a massive difference. Would an amp really be necessary for the 120 Ohms 560s?

    Great presentation.
That’s the way with diminishing returns. When a product reaches a certain price point it’s quality can only be expected to increase slightly for every doubling of price. A three to five percent improvement is probably quiet correct. The logic reason it cannot be more, is that when a certain performance parameter has been meet, every further improvements will be inaudible. In the case of the Sennheiser 660S the only truly audible faults it displays is a roll of in level below 100 Hz and some headphone to pinnae (the flabby thing protruding from the head/ear canal) interaction, which makes the soundstage of the headphone more constricted. Now if Sennheiser throws a lot of money in developing these two aspects let’s say 15% for a 670S (nonexistent product!) and charges double up. The total product performance will then only increase by 5% because all other performance parameters like midrange timbre/level/balance and the same for treble will not have been improved. The true value of a headphone and all other products in life can only be decided after a decision on how much one is willing to splash out. For me by the way, the best Sennheiser is the 650S. It’s a bit cheaper than the 660S and it counters the lack of bass with a slightly more laidback treble giving it a more musical balance. And the 650S is the king of headphones in midrange performance, voices sounds startling realistic, something very important nowadays with all the great podcasts available. Greetings from Denmark.

I have all of them and let me tell u that HD660s has all this HD 650 mids but with better clarity , speed, imaging, soundstage , And they lose from HD 650 on smoothness only . Also HD 6 line can produce low end bass with eq and normal volume levels , thats is known and Rtings has measure them without clipping . The reason HD 6 line has roll off on both ends is the sound signature mostly and secondly on low end bass they cant produce it on very high volumes because the mebrane and coil cant do that. HEadphones that are tuned to have more Low End like FOCAL ELEX they do it but on high leveles they CLIP all of them they CLIP that happens on Open backs ... Some planars can go low end but most of them under 1.000 euros have Quality issues with failing channels because of that ... So HD 6 line trust me is like that for a reason . If u want something better u have to go over 1.000 for example Focalr Clear ... ( but they also clipp on low end high volumes) or Planars that u have to be very careful . On the other Hand HD 6 line will last forever and ever what ever u do .

@@Tripokaridos22 what luxury to possess all of them. The reason I prefer the 650S slightly over the 600S is exactly the slightly reduced treble balance to counterbalance the reduced bass level below 80 Hz. And then I happens to like the look of the 650S slightly better than the latest version of the 600S (but not the earlier stone/marble look 600S). It’s irrelevant and shouldn’t enter the equation but looks are at least of some importance. My wish is that Sennheiser one day will make a version of either the 600 or 650 with slightly better bass reach (better seal of the pads or whatever it requires) and a 150 ohm impedance. Personally I’m not going to bother with equalization. I want to be able to plug the device into basically anything and get a pleasant natural reproduction of the human voice, singing or speaking.
I have newer heard any Focal headphones, but I am quite interested and will get it done. You are not the only one who describes the Clear as a high end 600S. It then seems like the replacement the Clear MG is their high end 650S, with a slightly more withdrawn treble?
      Thanks for your input.

So, I'm not an audiophile that will drone on and on endlessly about gold plated cables or other snake oil. But something I consider extremely basic is the impedance of a headphone. The 660s REQUIRES amplification. It simply isn't optional with a headphone rated at 150ohms. Its not going to sound good out of a headphone jack on a phone or laptop. If you connect it directly to your PC, sure you may have slightly better results because the headphone jack on a motherboard will give a bit more juice than a phone. But the bottom line is that anything rated that high is going to require amplification. If you want 660s sound quality in a headphone not requiring amplification you have options. The MEZE 99 classics can be purchased for around $200 or lower depending on if they are the massdrop version or you pick them up used on the cheap. These sound as good or near as good and can be driven from a smartphone. Heck Id rather listen to a pair of Koss Porta Pros for $22.95 than the 660s's without amplification. Also, not all audio interfaces will deliver the juice necessary for a headphone like the 660s. 150ohms is quite a power hungry headphone. Bottom line, if you cant provide amplification than the 660s is not the headphone for you, but you still have options.

I wouldn't say 150 ohms is power hungry. Amplification is recommended, but not necessary; you can just power them well enough from a mobile phone (enough being the operative word). But as mentioned before, they definitely benefit from an amp.

Great review those 2 are on my 5 favorite headphones that i use . HD 560s remind me the 600 more than 650 or 660s to be honest , they sound neutral with more soundstage like all the 5 series my 599 also have that soundstage. HD 660s for me worth the price even compared to my Sundara that sound clearer the reasons are , imaging is on another level , they sound so analogue smooth and organic like all the HD 6 line but with more details its like they are warm but without losing detail or being harsh like DT 1990 , Sundara, 560s ... At least to my ears on some songs . Also bad quality tracks mostly old rock music sounds better on HD 600 , 650 , 660s in my opinion . Sennheiser has something for everyone , with HD 600,650,660s they give u the famous warm smooth sound with small differences, and with HD 560s u get something more modern with more sparkle and neutral sound .

HD660s are boring compared to Sundara for some people and that is because they have warmer character they are smoother on highs they have in your head singer voice . But again if u really listen both of them for many many hours u understand that 660s are more organic more realistic with voices that even the breath of the singer has texture , On sundara everything sounds so open so clear that feel unnatural. Let me put ut that way... With 660s is like u have the singer in real life in front of u and with Sundara its like the singer is inside a studio polished clean the sound and give it to u. Yeah it aounds more wow more clear but also doesnt make u feel that is real ... I dont know if i can explain it to u correct. Sundara some times sound metalic also .
But i love both of them i like both of them for different reasons if i want excitement and make some people say wow i give then Sundara... But when i want to relax to feel like i am inside a bubble with the singer then i choose 660s.

Have you tried testing 660s on a better amplifier? I was planning to purchase 660s for kinda acceptable mid-price personally. but I find reviews that said they regretted on 660s until they found out it was their amplifier haven’t been utilising the 660s after all, even it was 150 Ohm only.
This hinders me from buying, and end up here looking for comparison between 550s and 660s.

Yeah with an amplifier or dac the 660S is incredible, if you're unsure if a dac/amp can drive the headphones you're looking for there's usually a result by googling "can X drive Y headphone" or by checking the power the amp or dac outputs and comparing it to the headphone's impedance.

You don’t exactly need the most expensive Dac or amp to power these however, getting the Dac that would sound the best is a different story. All dacs have different types of chips that have their own characteristics by design and nature. Some have a more clinical sound while others have a more rounded more smoothed out sound making it more enjoyable to listen to. However there are some like the Zen Dac has had an optional firmware that has been removed called “7.2 cookies and cream “ which originates from the more expensive ifi Diablo. With the Philips Fidelio X2HR it sounds very wide which compliments the headphones sound signature and makes movies sound a lot more immersive than any of the other available firmwares 7.3 and 7.4 variants. Basically if it weren’t for the 7.2 firmware I most likely would of just returned the zen Dac v2 , because 7.2 cookies and cream sounds that good with these particular headphones .

Amp will not make that much of a difference. People are just exaggerating. That's just how audiophile community is. The difference at best will be less than few % that most people can't even hear but for audiophiles that's "HUGE DIFFERENCE! THEY SOUND SOOO MUCH BETTER!" It's just exaggeration, nothing else. The only difference amp can make is to boost the volume if you don't get enough without it. I tested bunch of headphones with different amps. The difference in sound if any is laughable and insignificant and mostly is placebo effect.

  • @bernardm3066
    @bernardm3066 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

All the headphone reviews/comments follow the same pattern. First comment loves them, next one hates them, next one likes them, next one sold them and so on. Bottom line is that this is one of the most subjective hobbies because your own ear also has its own frequency response so what you hear is not exactly what other people do. When it comes with headphones you just need to try them.
I think a headphone that fits you will be obvious to you from the first few times if not the first you listen to it. An amp will help but only a bit unless it is a very niche headphone or you power it from a 20$ mp3 player. If you don't have to go to 100% to listen to them at an ok volume you are probably fine to get a decent idea of their sound. For sure an amp will not make you love a headphone you dislike. I personally like the 660s a lot and did so from the beginning but a lot of people don't. I also have gone through a huge I like it/I hate it cycle with other headphones for example the DT 1990 which is adored by many.
EQ also helps but for me a keeper is a headphone that you just like only using an ok dac/sound card without any EQ. Just try as many as you can and if you don't like them return them and move on. If you don't completely hate a headphone and you can afford to keep it for the collection for sure you will find uses for it though.

I really like your practical approach for reviewing these. I own the original HD600 and I was looking to get a new head phone. Did you look at the HIFIMAN SUNDARA? They are a bit cheaper than the HD660s and some people say they sound better. I also heard that the HD660s have better imaging than the HD560s. I think that would make them better for gaming. One thing that no one seems to talk about is listening to movies on headphones. I find that's my primary use. I'm still waiting for a headphone reviewer that has something to say on that topic.

Thank you for the feedback! :) I have not heard of the HIFIMAN sorry.
Yes, the HD660s have better imaging in my opinion, I would agree with that. I would say both of the headphones are great for watching movies. I have watched the Mandalorian with both headphones alternating and it was a great experience. Great detail, very clear spoken word. The bass is not super prominent because both headphones have a flat sound curve but that's what you get with the Sennheiser's and in the best case you can experience the sound like it is intended to be. I would guess that most movies are created with headphones or boxes that have a flat sound profile.

IEM's aren't touching my 560S's sorry. Not in measurements atleast. You may prefer the way the Shuoers sound but that doesn't make them objectively better. That's not how it works. They just sound better to you personally. Also you can enjoy the 560S's without having to "analyze music" you just can't like a lot of songs that are ultra bass heavy which I don't. if you listen to really well produced and mastered music without too much obnoxious bass you'll love the 560S's. I feel your music taste just doesn't suit them or you didn't give them enough of a chance. Personally I want to hear as closely as I can how the song was *meant* to sound. Not how the headphone manufacturer *wants* it to sound. Loving my 560S's. Glad you're loving your S12's.

Then most likely you will not like Sundara neither. Shuoer S12 (like most of planar IEMs) has pretty strange sound, you won't find the same in most planar overears.
And while being flat headphones advocate - i can see that this sound is not for everyone. And also stories about "music was meant to be what you hear in flat headphones" are bullshit. The goal of producer is to make music sound as good as possible on as much audio devices as possible, prioritizing most popular formats and sound signatures. They use what they use not because "it is meant to be heard on this device", but because it is a tool, through which they find mistakes and which is predictable. Some studio monitors are PAINFUL to listen to music in (yes, Bayerdynamic, I'm looking at you). And with most of monitors you will not hear the best of music - you will hear ALL mistakes.

I don't get all the praising about 560s, and I returned them. The siblance and metallic taste on the female voices, the lack of imaging (you can only tell from straight sx to straight dx), the narrow soundstage, the uncomfortable pressure on the head... They would be ok for a 100€ price range and very casual listening, not 200.
Also the bold claims by Sennheiser on these... Just ridiculous!

Normally the soundstage of the 560s is wider than the ones of the 600 - series including the 660s.
The sound of the 560s is a problem for me because of it's very harsh and overpronounced upper mids / deeper treble at about 5 kHz. This is so annoying for me that they are nearly unlistenable for me without eq. Other people (you for example) don't have any problems with that. And I know some other people who are sharing my opinion. I believe that has got something to do with the individual ear channel frequency resonance.
So, listen to the 560s before buying. Some people have those problems with it, some not.

True, but in the grand scope, the HD 660s are some of the cheapest Sennheiser Headphones and also some of the cheapest hifi/audiophile headphones, but sure, for "normal" use and "normal" people, they are expensive, but you should have put that detail in the title or the intro.
I love my HD 560s and for anyone who wants to upgrade from crappy normal headphone sound to absolutely beautiful sound, these are a killer value. Even better, if you want an upgrade sometime down the line but really like the sound of the HD 560s, you don't have to buy a new pair, you should buy a DAC and an amp for a total price of what the HD 560s cost or better yet, a bit more, because you will need to spend several hundred $$ before you get the HD 560s to sound the best they can sound.

I think my 560s's are excellent. I have 600 and 650 as my other references. 560s are brighter indeed but they've never hurt me. The hf chop is pretty standard when you have a look at headphone response graphs in general tbh. Perhaps you are sensitive to a specific hf component these cans output well. Xx

They sound really good on my LG V60 with the quad dac. But I will add they may not sound as good with poorly recorded music. So its a give/take there. They will sound just crazy good with well recorded material and worse with poorly recorded stuff. Which is to be expected with anything with a flatter response. But overall, I'm blown away with the 560S. Many say these are better overall then the 600's with more bass. But you have to have a dac or enough power to drive them at 120 ohms. My LG seems to handle these with ease.
