The most impressive part is his tires surviving the lava. They aren’t normal tires but still.
The tires also have the protective shell. In season 3 "junkyard dog" they even survived overnight in acid waste
However Teflon bullets can destroy tires and lasers

Got to admit. That was one of the best maneuvers I had ever seen KITT go through. Going through lava certainly can't be easy even for tanks.

Yeah he didn't get it back during that episode, but he obviously got it back by the next one.

Can't withstand acid, can't take a rocket hit, but can driver through two miles of lava. Knight Rider logic has always been high on cocaine.
There's one more thing to mention. Originally, there was no such thing as 'Molecular Bonded Shell'. In the pilot episode the thing is mentioned when talking about car's paintjob. Devon describes it as 'a finish bonded into a molecular structure of a new substance'.
So basically, when Larson was still in charge of the show, there was no such thing as 'molecular bonded shell' (And for good reasons. Everything is bonded on molecular level. That's how chemistry works).
KITT's whole bodyshell was made of a new indestructable substance, and the 'paint' didn't fall off when bullets hit him, because it wasn't paint, but aesthetic and camouflage finish bonded into that substance on molecular level.
Or should we say, the pigment was added to the substance to achieve dark colour, because that's what molecular bonding means. It means mixing particles. If you set something on fire, you create molecular bonding between oxygen and carbon to use a simple example.
Apparently later on some school dropout scriptwriter at NBC misunderstood the phrase, and hence MBS was born.

Well the rocket hit was a heat seeker directly to his exhaust system, I think you just have to hold your hands up on that one. It's not like FLAG sat there and thought "Oh hang on, we'd better somehow armour K.I.T.T's exhaust system just in case he's hit by a heat seeking missile emanating from a car that's he actually having to run away from,"
K.I.T.T.'s normal area of operations are going to be reasonable situations like taking bullets and for the most part he is supposed to avoid collisions and lessen the chances of anyone getting hurt. Don't forget that K.I.T.T. was actually rushed through in his design, so there was even lesser chance of covering all bases, which is why he constantly needed upgrading throughout the series.
With regards the acid, the exposure to the acid wasn't in itself the problem, it was the fact K.I.T.T. was completely submerged in it and overnight at that, had a GOOD soak in that ish. His interior was not armoured, it was cloth and plastic like any other car. But the fact is, the shell of the car remained in tact because acid cannot decompose it.
The only criticism I'd have for the lava is why they didn't use Super Pursuit if getting through was time critical, but otherwise, the scene made sense to me. K.I.T.T. could only withstand the heat for a limited time before the composition of his shell would start to come apart. There's a big difference between molten lava and acid.

It's Insane! Even the Molecular - Bonded Shell has its own limit against volcano's lava..
The heat, all things man made or not have a melting point.

There is no way KITT could have been destroyed by toxic waste or anything else for that matter if it can survive 2.5 MILES (4.02 km) wide(!) lava stream.
Not the molecular bonded shell that protects KITT. It is plot armor (when needed)
Well actually in that episode his molecular bonded shell was intact the frame and body of the car was still there it was towed out however kitt is not waterproof so the acid leaked in and destroyed all of his electronics thus killing him.
Even the keeps the perfectly normal tires from melting lol.
I actually theorized that KITT's molecular bonded shell is a form of graphene clear coat graphene is the two-dimensional version of graphite it is basically a superconductor at room temperature is 100 times stronger than steel and 96% transparent which means it's invisible to the human eye and it's flexible which means I can go on tires, at two atomic layers thick it is bulletproof this is because it absorbs kinetic energy and spread it all over the material so it's not focused on one point so you can literally make bulletproof clothing and no one would know.
God knows how many layers they put on a KITT but since graphene is flexible they'll probably have to put it in some really hard clear coat for the body of the vehicle like they we seen them spraying it both on KITT and Goliath like a clear coat so why not!

Disappointed that so many episodes Michael seems upset when KITT is hurt but they dont once cover the idea of him being a sentient AI. They even disrespect him by taking him apart for the movie.

It is not good for acid, but it can withstand lava.
Lava is at about 1200 degrees normal steel doesn't melt until 1400, it's the plastic and rubber parts that would fail on a normal car, Kitt wouldn't have a problem.

I watched this all throughout my childhood.
KITT is worried about his molecular bonded shell and I'm worried about his tires LOL.
The outside looks like crape, but the inside is perfect and full of expensive technology. That guard is one DA.

Unfortunately this is one of those special effects quarter scale let's save money and not jump the car type stunts that they did in the 4th season and unfortunately there would be more of them it's just they were not as popular as they were at the beginning and they were losing money right and left and they started cutting corners

Such a great shame about the way knightrider ended .... voodoo knight ....n then nothing else ..... It should have ended with Michael Knight and Kitt and and a gorgeous young lady getting married and riding off into the sunset 🌇🌆🌇 and living happily ever after!! 'The Scent of Roses' was originally supposed to be the final episode of Knight Rider, but NBC decided to air it on Valentine's Day instead.
