Thank you for sharing your experience! I am going to try this method for a flower pot on a patio. Here in NJ summer is hot and I do not want to spend every evening watering and not able going away for a long weekend because of these flowers 😊

Hi, Before you go to all the trouble of making more of these, I suggest that you check with Leon and watch more of his videos. From what I understand, these will not work with the kind of planting stuff - ( i.e. the "soil "(no dirt)" you are using in them. Try watering in one and see how the wicking goes before you make more. You need to get one working before you make so many more. I have not tried them yet, but this is how I understand it- only compost will not work

The compost would probably work for awhile, but it will get packed hard and stop wicking eventually. Would have been better to do at least a 50-50 mix of the compost with peat or coco coir and a quart of two of perlite or vermiculite.

I hope it wicks well enough
Leon says it needs at least 50% PEAT in the mix for it to wick well
The mix I use it 50 or 60% peat
Let me know how it goes

yes i want to hear how this worked, as I would love to use straight compost instead of peat moss. i would think the compost would compact too much but I hope it worked for you.

There's a much simpler way to make a self watering tub that I came up with last year and am very happy with. All I do is drill six holes around a half barrel about 5" from the bottom, then thread through six lengths of 3/4" organic cotton rope through the same holes (I cut my cotton rope into 4' long pieces). Knot the ropes sticking out of the holes near the bottom. Pile in your compost and soil to fill the barrel half way, put in a length of PVC that has holes drilled in it to ensure that water will flow at different heights under the soil. Work the ropes so each one touches the bottom of the barrel, then fill the barrel the rest of the way while working the ropes to lay at different levels under the soil. Then plant your plants since you're done! No jugs or wicking material or anything else required, the cotton ropes will pick up the water at the bottom of the barrel and distribute it through the soil. My barrels are also the same mineral tubs as you've used in this video... they hold about 5 gallons of water when the holes are drilled 5" from the bottom of the barrel. During drought I replenish the water through the PVC pipe of course.

@@FATDADDYSOUTDOORCOOKING It's much easier and works really well. TH-cam doesn't allow photos in the comments, otherwise I'd post some on how I did mine.
