    We cant thank you enough Leon. You have have changed our lives for the better. This is the second year that I am blessed to follow you. Last year we started with only a few 27 gallon tubs, but this year we ended up with 36 tubs, 7 (5 gallon) buckets, 4 hanging plant and a couple of birds in a tree. We had so much grow this year, we had to go out a buy more canning jars. I just expanded our growing area again so that next year we can double our size. Thanks!

      Leon, I have gardened for 70 years. From 4H as a kid to now as a grandma. Moved all around the country and had to relearn a lot in the different climates. Your wicking tubs are the single best idea I've ever learned. Thank you so much. And thank you for being the kind of good, solid, God fearing, Midwestern farmer like my grandparents were. You remind me of all the good men and women who have fed this country for decades. I don't think a lot of people in the big cities where I've lived realize how smart farmers have to be. Thank you. We could use more of you in these crazy times. God Bless.

      @johnlee7085 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tubs commonly come with lids, but if not, a cover can easily be made from wood. For long term performance, paint the wood with a good exterior paint. Attaching wood around the perimeter bottom of the cover with keep it in place.

    Loved the information. I had just purchased some 20 gallon bags to try out next spring/summer. This couldn't have come out at a better time for me.
    I wish your audio pickup was better. Even with my sound volume at maximum and ear buds in I had a hard time hearing what you were saying. Is there anyway that you could improve your audio pickup? It is a shame that I am probably missing some essential tips because I either cannot hear you or it is so soft I miss some things.
    That said, I look foreward to seeing that you have another video out.
    Have you seen and or used any if the wall-hanging "cloth" growbag cup planters? They claim they can be used to grow herbs, lettuce and other greens and some flowers hanging on a wall or fence. Supposedly they are not suppose to get the surface behind it or the ground/floor below it wet.
    I have a room that has windows to within 18 inches above the floor, facing to the north, east, and south but is not very large and does not have any cabinets or bookcases to set pots on. Drywall walls and wood floors plus a floor heat/AC vent. I was wondering if it would work to grow herbs inside year round. We had had years when the summers hit over 100°F for a couple of weeks and no rain for close to a month but the winters drop down below zero with dry winds and no snow. Since plants improve air quality, I figured growing herbs, miniture lemon and lime trees, couple of pineapples, 2 bell peppers and 2 tomato plants inside would be good for the air but for fresh pestice-free veggies. Now if I could find a source for tumeric roots/rhizomes. I'd like to try growing that at home as well.
    Thank you for sharing your wisdom. May the good Lord continue to bless and keep you and all you love or work with safe and healthy.

  • @rustyc601

    In watching a bunch of other wicking videos, some say the wick height is only about 11-12 inches. Is that limit accurate and there is a way around it for this kind of build, or is there a way to get the wicked water up the 6 or so inches of the top tub+inner plastic soil container and into the grow bag about half(?) way up for the roots of the plant sitting at the top? (Assuming an average 3/4ths full black tub, that's still makes 12 inches maybe just barely halfway up the grow bag from what I can guess. So if the water is half full or less, then it would seem the wicking water hardly will reach the roots?)

      @rustyc601 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've only tried something vaguely like this once and it didn't wick (my design was bad) but watching many videos in past few days, many suggest weed cloth/barrier as an interior liner where the soil or wicking medium is inside the liner and the holes/plastic container are outside. Helps keep the soil from mixing with the water. But this isn't my personal experience yet so ymmv?

  • @larrystead7208

    I think the watering tube should be outside the soil so it can wick up.

    • @flatsville1
      @flatsville1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed. The big IBC tote bed makers have the fill pipe along the edge of the tote & not blocked by soil or the fabric they lay down. It goes straight through to the water reservoir in the bottom.

    • @johnlee7085
      @johnlee7085 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The tube can be inside or out. Hydrostatic pressure will even out the level.
      It will be easier to fill if the tube is outside the growbag because the water won’t have to flow through the soil to get to the water reservoir. With the light soil being used, the soil flow rate will be high enough that it shouldn’t be a significant difference but there will be some.

    Mr Leon, can the tube be put on the outside of the bag? Or should it be inside of the bag? I have 30+ grow bags that I would like to start converting to this system. Shoo that is going to be a lot of work. BUT, it just hasn't been working out well as is. It's a constant battle to water just straight bags.

    Leon can I get top soil and mix peat moss or something with it so I don't have to buy 50 bags of potting soil?

    • @johnlee7085
      @johnlee7085 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The quality of the soil you start with will determine the amount of effort it takes to amend it.
      Please look for an alternative to pest moss. The peat bogs are a natural resource that is being destroyed by the production of peat moss and takes many decades to restore.
      You might consider rice hull compost. It is a waste product from rice production that is really beneficial to the soil and would otherwise be burned.

      I was wondering that too. Drill a hole in the top of the donut lid near the outside rim edge & use a wooden doll rod to measure the water?
      Plug hole with a cork to keep out mosquitoes?
      Where do you find the lids? Do they come with the 25 gal black buckets ? What product does the 25 gal black bucket hold originally?

    • @johnlee7085
      @johnlee7085 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Rather than making another hole, just put the stick in a cork bobber down the fill tube.
      If you add tape to the top of the stick when it’s empty and when filled, you’ll easily be able to see how much water is in the tub.

      Are you leaving an air space at the top of the water reservoir? Sewer gas usually formers when organic material decomposes in an anaerobic situation/without oxygen.
      The way to avoid this is for the overflow hole to be 1” below the top of the water reservoir. Then there’s always air.

      On Facebook Marketplace, type in tubs and you should see them. They are actually used protein/molasses/electrolyte tubs for cattle/sheep/etc. When people have empty ones, they will usually place an add to sell them. If you are near Kingston Oklahoma, you could drive to his nursery and purchase them there cheap. He is 3 hours away from me so I made the decision to drive there a couple of years ago. I was able to purchase literally everything for the setups there. The results are crazy good. I love it.
