Chasing down electrical issues on your bike can be a frustrating process. Eliminating components from the possible list of problems is the best way to track down your issue. We show you a simple way to check and see if your stator is not functioning correctly and eliminate that as a possible issue before moving on to other components. You will need a multimeter to perform the tests.

Thank you for making these videos fluff free and straight to the point. I appreciate the great job youre doing
Excellent video. Helped me eliminate the stator as my problem. Replaced $50 voltage regulator, problem solved. Thank you
This is very good. Clear and slow explained so someone unexperienced can learn. Good vibes coming off from the man
The first test was a short test to ground, this is to test if one of the windings have a short to the chassis.
So I’m not to confident in my results but my stator passed the continuity test and failed the ohm test. I tested the multimeter before starting and confirmed it was reading at a 0.00. Only one phase read at a 0.01. The other two phases read at a 0.00. I’m pretty sure that screams bad stator but a yes or no and some direction on how to move forward would be much appreciated. Bikes been kept in the garage for 3 months now and it’s just starting to get nice and cool out I’d love to get back on the road. Plz help lol.
Well mine stopped charging. I checked my 3 phase windings . Simular to the way checked a 3 phase motor. I checked each phase to ground . Shorted to ground. So I did not check the resistance of the coils no need . Pulled it down called jp ordered a stator . For sure in my option do what ever is necessary to make sure the bolts don't back out of stator . I added more blue lock tight and torqued it properly
Excellent video explaining everything. The one huge problem I have is that my bike won’t start so I can’t check that last test. Power goes on, speedometer doesn’t go on and nothing happens when I hit start. I tested the battery and it’s good. Its a 2007 Sporty 1200.. Any thoughts? Thank you
There was no link for the battery testing video.
If you have an alarm installed on your bike & you don’t keep it on a battery tender or you don’t ride enough, or you don’t disconnect the ground wire, the alarm itself will drain the battery drastically. This kept happening on my Sportster 48 with a gel battery. In this case, get a lithium battery with a built in tester (BTS) and it will shut itself off after it detects low charging levels.
Even if I don't use the alarm?
There might be confusion here about the alarm during the continuity check. My MM gives a buzz when there is continuity and stays silent, but on 1 when there is not
Correct. He was a bit confusing. A continuity test only looks for a break in the wires, thus we use the beeper. No need to even look at the display. A beep means no breaks. No beep means break in the wire (stator windings).
Thx. Good details with the voltages and multimeter testing.
Hi mate have a 08 fatboy and was wondering if lithium batteries are ok to use ? Will it charge correctly if everything is working correctly thank you
Hi Patrick, may I ask how do we perform the test nr. 3 (the AC voltage) if the bike's not starting/running?
You can’t. The stator doesn’t do anything when the magnets aren’t spinning around them.
@@rebel_ltz Hey, thanks! thanks for sharing the knowledge! :) :)
Thanx for doing this video.Gonna be checking my 2001 Dyna for any issues thatyou just demenstraited
I have a 2019 Indian FTR that drains its battery while riding to the point of it shutting off every one in a while. It never fails to cold start tho.
Manual Says the stator should be giving 27 vac at idle and 34 at 2,000 rpm, but im only getting 20 and 31 respectively.
Is my stator that bad and needs replacing ?
The regulator maintained the Battery at 14.5v, but dont know if the low power from the stator overworks the regulator and thats when my battery drains while riding ?
Thank you, this is avery good expanation of what is required to test the stator. It makes the job easier when the job is laid out clearly and simply.
I have a question. I did all the test . I have no ground shortage. I have nothing on the ohms test it's 00.0 does this mean my stator is bad
Great video. Just learned I passed all 3 tests on the video. OK so tell me now please.. Does this mean my rectifier is bad? I'm not getting any charging at my battery..
Set your tester on DC volts remove the DC output cable to battery start the bike rev to 2k check the DC output voltage across the 2 regulator/rectifier pins should be getting 12-15VDC output if not its fkd
I'd check the charging system in this order - battery, regulator and then stator. Simply because that's the easiest and most logical flow. Battery most likely culprit and regulator can be tested at the same time by checking if voltage is holding, dropping or surging. If they're OK, stator is next and most likely the problem.
Do you have a channel or video I can watch your process on? Thanks
Okay so are you saying if I test my battery and I have less volts while it's running than I did before I started it it's the regulator or the stator?
My three prongs stator wire got cut two of the wires cut off from the front motor mount. Don’t understand how or why. Stator and regulator are only three months old. I’m going to check the stator like you showed. But the plug is no good and I can’t find a replacement without buying a new stator any help would be appreciated. Thanks
One other thing to consider if the stator is not putting out volts is the possibility of the rotor not turning due to the rotor flange being spun, broken.
Apparently it's a common fault with stock rotors on Evo's.
My rotor broke at the flange but the motor/primary run fine as the rotor will just sit still while the broken flange of the rotor spins on the crank spline.
It may rattle giving some indication there's an issue at certain revs but otherwise there is no obvious reason the stator is not putting out volts.
The 6 magnets in the rotor may come loose as well. There is a replacement rotor with a rim holding the magnets in place to fix this issue.
Hi, I have a 2000 Ulra that just died on me yesterday taking a short trip. I charged up the battery last night and today I performed the stator test as you show in the video. My meter shows that the stator is grounded on both sides which you say the stator is bad, but it is putting out 38 volts at 2000 rpm which is good. I checked the continuity between the 2 and there is continuity which is good. I checked the voltage at the battery while the bike is running and voltage is low (11.8v) and does not rise when revved up. Do you know whats going on here. Can a stator be grounded and still produce the proper voltage?
Bad regulator
Was it the regulator in the end? My bike is littery doing the exact same thing. Tested to ground on the stator while putting out good voltage. Battery not charging
Can I test it with main fuse out?
I have a 96 sportster stator checks out on test battery hold charge installed new voltage regulator. I am still not getting over 12volts at battery holding 2k and 3k rpms. Is there any other options.
So what if it passes the first two tests, but not the AC test? I have a 2010 sportster 48 and the manual says 13.5 V at 2000 RPM, but other places online say that's 13.5 V per 1000 RPM, which would be about 27 V. Either way, I'm cranking out 31 at idle and up to 45-50 at a slight rev. Is that too high? It shoots WAY up if I really throttle it. Is that a bad stator? Great video! But it doesn't state what to do if the voltage is too high or too low. Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Don't worry about it. The faster it spins the more power is output. Your stator is good.
I've got a 99 S&s 113 I bought a new voltage regulator but even with switch off it's drawing constant power. Could that mean the stater is bad?
First off, thanks for the video. I have a 2000 Fat Boy. It has 2 leads on the plug going to the regulator. When I do the continuity test, each lead to a bolt on the frame I get 1500+ instead of no change. Q: stater is bad?
Is good, , bike runs, voltage regulator
Really appreciate you put all this in the video. Thank you.
What if I see no change in the plug when doing the ohms test?
I’ve got a 05 sportster is got a 2 prong connection coming from the primary case where he said it would be but on my ohm check I get 1.109k ohm I feel like this is bad but I can’t find anything to specifically say that please comment thanks
What series is your multimeter bosch
Does noise come from a bad stator or voltage regulator? I have a bike that just died and it was making a noise with the engine light and batrery light came on. When i was riding it it would make a noise when u pulled the clutch in and the ligjts dimmed. Is that the stator or th voltage regulator?
I got a 95 Harley Davidson dyna lowrider I have bought three batteries. something keeps killing them they run for a while and show charge when the back is off .do you think it could be the stator or the regulator my lite does go dim and bright at night I've noticed
Hi . I have a 2015 ultra limited low. I tested my stator for continuity and I got an alarm sound from all 3 phases. But when I did the ac voltage output test while the bike was running all 3 phases were at about 30-35 ac volts. Is my stator bad?
The continuity test isn't the best test, as it only shows if there is a break (open) or short in the windings. It doesn't tell you the actual resistance in the windings, which is a much better test for the health of the stator. If you can find the specs for the correct resistance then you are golden. If not, then you can still do a resistance test across all 3 phases and compare. Look for all three within ~10% of each other. And 30-35 VAC (above idle) may be a good reading in your application. The spec should be published out there on the interweb. Cheers.
@@steadyeddie7453 my stator was toast. I’m glad I did the test on it.
Key suppose to be in the on position for testing these?
Wondering the same
Do you know why the teeth on a stator magnet would get sheared off?
Ok, it passed the first 2 tests , the AC output said open line no ac output. Any ideas on the issue.
Hi...how much volts should have the power wire to the coil? Thanks in advance.
Check your battery first, especially if you run a Buell XB12Ss like mine and have a fan that constantly runs, even after you shut the bike off for what seems like 5 minutes. This is good for the engine so it cools nicely and keeps oil passeges from clogging due to a hot motor and no oil circulation... but it sure tasks your battery something fierce.
Hi. Dyna 2001 FXDP I have problem with burning regulators.wiring ground and plus checked. I measuring at minimum stator give 20- 23V but when accelerating it rises above 75- 80 V. In 10 minutes regulator burning. Stator already checked and looking good. Please help. Cheers
At my diode test my multimeter just showed OL through all 3 wires. Does this mean my stator is grounded?
If I pull out the plug from under my 97 flhtc how am I supposed to know which hole is A, which is B and which is C? Thank you.
I have a 2002 Ultra Classic that has a 3-Phase Rectifying Regulator and stator I am just learning to work on my own projects how would I go about testing these two out everything I have seen deal with a plug in type.
When I first start the bike up volt meter on dash reads at 12.5 and as it runs for a few minuets it drops blow 11 volt's i had fired up the bike let it run for about 20 min. one day and had the battery tested it showed it was good but needed a charge but when I test it on the bike and rev it up its running in the 14.5 range. it has stalled on me a couple of time when i cam to a stop one person rider is good two is a spit and sputter. any and all help would be appreciated!
If it beeps it’s bad? I just bought a brand new one and it also beeps?
Hye i got new stator for two times.. Now the stater voltage is 4.7.. What is the problem?
I have a 2008 xl1200c, I keep getting low ecu voltage on my V&H FP3. Is that a charging issue, ecu or something else? It happened once or twice before, JUST tried to ride home and that's all it kept showing was the check light with battery indicator. Nothing ran badly though either.
If phase a to B & B to CY would you check C to be when you I have already checked b to c
Shouldn’t you check A to. C
Do you ever answer questions when someone asks about your videos. I asked a question about a week ago and haven't gotten an answer. And now I have another question since I got the chance to do the AC testing. What if one of three connections doesn't match up with the other two? Two have readings of 34 to 35, but one of them only reads around 29 at 2000 rpms.
Simply.. You guys are the best..!! 👍👍
I have an 883 2012 not charging the battery. But when I disconnect my stator from my rectifier the bike will not start so how do I check voltage
Always good info.
I have a Sportster. If I unplug the wire coming out of the stator the bike dies. Any ideas?
I have an 03 flstf/I. It is making a kind of grinding sound after it gets warmer up. The noise is present when the bike is just idling with no rider on the bike. I mean it's sitting on the kik stand idling and it begins to make a hell of a kinda grinding sound with plenty of vibration. I thought it may be my cam chain tensioner. I replaced them but the sound is still there. It is coming from the driver's side of the motor and it seems to be coming from the front lower left hand side of my bike. Left is the driver's side of the bike. Could this be my stater. I can't think of anything else it could be. Since it does it in neutral while idling I am thinking it's not my clutch pack. I'm at a loss. Any help would be awesome. Thanx
Great video! When testing continuity, did you say you want to hear a beep (my meter beeps) to determine a good stater or did you say you wouldn’t want continuity (no beep)?
You DON'T want to hear the alarm

So I just did a quick battery swap with a new lithium-ion and when I start it and look at my voltage it climbs to 16 and flip-flops in between 14 and 16 just letting it run do you know why??
So I got nothing from a-b and a-c but b-c was fine. What does this mean?
good video. straight forward.
Awesome video sir thanks
Hello!!! I have a 2018 harley davidson breakout M8. I burned the regulator. what I would like to ask you is: how much current must come out of the stator ??? measuring at minimum I give 20 V in alternating current, but accelerating it rises above 70/80 V. is this normal ???? Thanks in advance.
Hi. I have this same problem. measuring at minimum stator give 20- 23V but accelerating it rises above 75- 80 V. In 10 minutes regulator burning. How do you fix your problem. Please reply. Cheers
Why would my ultra classic keep burning stators? New voltage regulator, new battery and new stator?
I made a stator resistance test on a HD street glade 2009 ,A to B (0.04 ohms) B to C (17 ohms) A to C (17 ohms) now I know something about my stator is wrong... Thank you
I have a 2004 HS6 Harley Powered Trike ..I recently replaced the battery & it ran get for a few days & then the battery is dead and I have to jump it to start it. ..as soon as I disconnected the jumpers ... it does ... HELP !!!!
Thanks Patrick...very helpful 👍
I installed a new battery. Rode for several hours, killing the engine and restarting several times. Last start battery was dead. Bike is 07 w/ 76500 miles. Volt gauge reads pegged out. Replaced volt meter. Gauge is the same!?? Gauge out?
Excellent video
That's an excellent video! Guess what I'm doing this weekend :(
Great video
If it’s plus point 3 and you kept getting point four wouldn’t that be point 7 because you said add the resistance? That’s way over. Maybe you meant subtract
thank you this helped a lot!
Thank you!
Straight to the point not much bs
Really appreciate all the videos and valuable tips you guys post! Thanks for sharing your expertise and saving us all time and money!

BATTRY HOT ! ? .
Thank you Patrick 🇺🇸
Thanks. Good video.
Excellent
Thank you for this.
You didn’t mention to make sure the point at which your testing for a short to ground, to make sure it’s a good ground, chrome bolts are not a good point to test. Also you use the ohm position to test for a short, not the diode position, that is for testing diodes, but it does kinda work the same.
You can use the lowest ohm position to check continuity if your multimeter doesn't have a diode position.
@@ronaldfharring7326 And if the meter is set to OHMS with the beeper set to ON, the meter will act like a continuity tester. The video was a bit confusing, IMO.
Sorry forgot to mention it's on a 2017 Street Glide FLHX completely stock no add-ons original battery from Dealer was in from 2017 until now,no other work done
My 08 fxdl wasn't charging the battery, I new it was probably the Cheap Chinese Voltage Regulator that Harley uses. I checked it sure enough it was bad, I also checked the Stator with confidence that it wasn't bad because the bike only has 14k original miles on it. After testing, sure enough the Stator was bad as well.
Went to Stan's Harley in Batavia, NY, They wanted after tax 285$ for a cheap chinese voltage regulator and another 220 after tax for a stator that was also made in China. I told Stans to keep the parts I'll order quality parts instead, the girl at the parts Dept. pretty much treated me like shit after that.
I went home and after some research I purchased a stator and a regulator from Cycle Electric, made in the USA in Ohio both came with a 2 year Warranty. Note as soon as I take it out of the Package Harley won't warranty electrical parts. Moral of the post, by quality parts stay away from Cheap Harley Chinese parts, they don't last and they do not put out the proper voltage or current for the other electrical parts.
Thank you!!
that was great. thanks
shit, I got a beep. Im grounded out to the motor. Pulling the primary cover I guess. I appreciate your help. Now to find my black friday stator sale. lol.
Top 👍👍👍👍👍👍
A little confusing on the continuity testing. Continuity testing should be done with the beeper ON. You don't have to even look at the meter display. A beep across 2 leads indicate no breaks. Resistance testing, you would be looking for a value on the display. Thanks for the video.
Awesome video live to ride Ride to live
Test a battery always under load! A battery without a load always give's nice 12Volt but under load the bad battery's wil betray themselves.
Also the alternator, always test them under load, take a big power resistor of about 10 to 20 Ohm, but be carreful, this resistor in gona get hot!! I cool them always in a bucket filled with water. measure the current and voltage, if all three are equal then the alternator is ok.
Damn 2 of the connections were putting out good voltage and then one was putting out 5.2....
So my bike did nothing on the second test. That’s a fail huh need a new stator I guess?
Voltage regulator not meter. Sorry.
Its not an "ohms" test it's a resistance test.
Resistance is measured in ohms. The two terms are synonymous when referencing the test.
and WHAT'S the unit of measurement used in the test boys and girls?.... say it again so dannyboy can hear-- OHMS!
now STFU.
Not trying to be a smartass, but my meter beeps at 0
🤘😎🤘
El motor en v fue creado en la segunda guerra por la wolvaguen
Poor job showing readings on the meter.
What if it's not running
How would I check using the same procedure if the battery is dead? I have a 2014 vrod muscle and it’s giving problems with charging system and it keeps damaging the voltage regulator.
Thank you!
