Forward Bay Parking | 2024 UK Driving Test Manoeuvres

- The UK Driving Test includes the option of the forward bay parking manoeuvre. Whilst it is still recommended that we reverse into parking bays whenever possible, we may occasionally need to pull into a bay forwards, so it is good to practice this manoeuvre so we are able to do so safely. First, we’ll get an overview of the manoeuvre from outside the car, before going inside to see a more detailed view from the driver’s position. I just wanted to thank you both from the bottom of my heart for these videos, today I passed my practical driving test in Bury St Edmunds with only 4 minors FIRST TIME in my own car...your videos are so thorough and most of all detailed with so many camera angles. I just wanted to let you know that you are appreciated and you are helping so many of us out here along side our driving lessons. It would be awesome if you did more mock tests in BSE but with the new Sat Nav as I think that would be helpful for new learners to ease their worries over the new test and what to expect. All in all, great job guys and keep it up! See you on the roads :)
Wow - thanks very much for the nice comments! Amazingly, we have tomorrows new video ready for release - which is a full replica of a test here in BSE! Just came back from a lesson on forward Bay parking I was so confused with the lines but after watching this video I get it 😂 I was confused how my instructor explained it
I’ve watched all your videos many times and on the 6th of December I passed first time. Your videos taught me everything I needed to know before my instructor asked me to do it. So when my instructor asked me to do a reverse bay park for example, I was in perfect every time. I can honestly say if it was for the videos I wouldn’t have learnt so quickly. Thank you all so much :)

You're a great teacher Mam. Not every Driving instructor knows the art of teaching and making things easy to understand in an interesting or fun way.
I was great at this was doing it in a mini during lessons then a month before my test instructor changed cars into a corsa and suddenly I was struggling thankfully I got park on the right during my test!! PASSED with 3 minors!!

I live in NYC the bay parks are NOT on our road tests nor is it taught in driving school. I have been all over the lines and I damaged someone's car forward bay parking...this video is very very helpful thank you. I spent over 1200 dollars at a driving school and no one taught us bay parking and when i asked they really didnt know how to teach it!
We're glad you find our video useful! If you can find a quiet car park then have a little practice, so you are ready for the next time. We usually prefer to reverse into parking bays though, as the car is more manoeuverable, and its easier to drive forwards out of the bay afterwards (see our other video if needed).

Awesome… when i was practising, didn’t understand what went wrong… actually i need to position my vehicle on opposite side of road for more turning radius
That’s right - as we need plenty of room to turn into the bay forwards. 👍🏼
Think this always depends on the size of your car. My vw polo 6n2 I had years ago was brilliant for parking spaces. Straight in. Now my ford focus is a nightmare. Im weirdly so much better at reverse parking. Plus I feel it's better and quicker getting out.

I failed my test for this, the examiner said I didn't check my right mirror before I turned right into the bay. Gutted because this is one of the easier manoeuvre to control and I was just so nervous I rushed it.
Yeh just make sure you're checking mirrors a lot its a common reason for failures.
I failed my test today for this maneuvere as well but for a different reason. I feel your pain. 😭
It's very easy guy make sure the last line in the driver side door hand , and that's much easier than anything but I was struggling to find y reference point and finally it's work for me 😂 and I hope it work for U as well .

The last time I failed I was told by the examiner that I would incur a minor if I attempted to straighten up my forward parking manoeuvre, and I did so they must have changed this since you posted this video
You might get a minor fault for straightening up, but we wouldn’t worry about that as it is unlikely to affect the outcome of the test. 👍🏼
My instructor told me to turn when previous bay line is next to shoulder. Suppose both function the same... Looks a lot easier when watching a video. 😂

And just to say for this video i count 3 level with my shoulder then 2 then 1 chosen bay i go into then quater of a turn right then full lock right reverse bay i count 4 level with shoulder then 3 then 2 then 1 chosen bay then half of turn right then as i see bay just before i get into it then full lock right then round my bay then passengers then straighten if im wonky left i go right or wonky right i go left and parrell i do full turn left then get to angle then full turn right away from car and kerb check left mirror to be clear from kerb then full turn or lock left there my methods but reviseing vids have helped ive memorised them.
You’ve got everything worked out!
This one is quite a tricky maneuver for me as I can never tell if I'm in the bay correctly. The method my driving instructor said was to turn into the bay when the front wheel hits the first bay line of the target bay as opposed to the video saying it needs to be under the rearview mirror (though judging by that logic it's probably about the same thing anyway.) It definitely helps to be on the opposite side of the road to the bay that you are turning into as you will have more time to correct yourself than if you were to be right next to it. I feel like I wouldn't have to second guess myself if the car had a camera view that shows the bonnet of the car and the road in front of it so I could have a more detailed and precise view if I was going into the bay correctly or not.
Our Nissan Leaf (the red car) actually has 4 cameras, including one on the nose of the car as you describe! We can't rely on the cameras on a test though, and must keep observing all around the car for any danger. Once in the bay we are allowed to open our door or use the blind spot mirrors to check our position, and 'tidy up' if needed.

This car park doesn't look to bad. I would aim for those lamp posts since they are centre of the bays. I find it alot easier parking with parked cars because you can see where your going. Thanks for the video I'm gonna start using reference points.

Wish I would of watched this first because I had a bay park and my instructor always told me to postion myself in the middle then go into a bay.. and I got a fail for it . 😪 should of stayed on the left . Thank you for uploading

It's all very well demonstrating this in an emply car park but, normally there will be cars/vehicles in adjacent spaces. That's where the issue of driving out safely comes in.
+Nigel ALBRIGHT We thought you’d enjoy this video! Unfortunately it’s just not practical to mess about in a busy car park for an hour to film something. We did show that it will be more difficult to reverse out of the bay with an obstructed view - and of course we would usually prefer to reverse into a parking bay whenever possible.

Quick question where we position ourselves when there is two ways as you have done the exercises on a one way?
We still need to use the same road position, in order to have enough space for the car to turn into the bay - so we must wait until there is no oncoming traffic before moving to the other side of the road.

I failed because of this maneuver lol, the examiner was so lovely and sweet that he thought maybe this's the easiest maneuver to give me and i freaking couldn't do it even though i tried to fix it 3 times 🤣🤣🤣

That sounds tough. We like to start in a quiet car park if possible!
Maybe just turn when it feels right, instead of overthinking it. Or sort of mark the centre of the bay (by the kerb) in your mind and just drive towards it
