The demonstration makes it a lot easier than it is, obviously the driver is experienced, but for a learner taking the test this is quite a challenge especially when reversing about 2 car lengths as slight steering movement can potentially hit the kerb rather easily. I personally suggest any learner should concentrate this manuover as this is the most tricky and requires total control. Good luck every one in passing your test! Did mine in 2006 but continue to learn as it benefits me still, another great video. Thanks!
Got this manoeuvre on my test today, was happy I watched this a few times, as I passed. The video instructions are exactly what the examiner wants to see. Thank you!!
This is the barstord that failed me, right at the end of the test as well.. ONly had 3 minors prior to this.. Thanks or the upload helps a lot, cheers.
Oh my mine was the same! Last 15 min of the test I had zero faults. Everything was okay but a car approached and I was looking out the rear do I didn't stop for him 🙁 The examiner even said he was going to fast anyway. I got my 3 minors after that as I knew I failed! New test on Saturday 😁
This whole test change just to ensure the amount of teenage deaths due to road accidents decrease is ridiculous, it isn't going to change a thing. They are still going to speed when they pass their test and actual safe drivers who won't cause issues on the road are finding it harder to pass their tests.
ReerBaadia, that's not the point. The previous test, which included reversing around the corner and the three point turn, is better than the new test because it's more suitable for driving.
Yes, we recommend parking on the left side of the road usually - as it will be far easier to pull away again, and safer at night as our rear reflectors will face traffic behind our car.
Hi, I’ve been driving for the last 22 years and fingers crossed proved a very good driver, to change my career I want to do a driving instructor course any suggestions on where to start from and the requirements it needs.
2:00 got failed by my instructor on my mock test today for doing exactly what you did here; Not checking my right #blindspot before moving into the right lane. Glad to see that even driving instructors/teachers miss their checks too now and again😅
100% - I really wish people who uploaded these videos made sure that their content was accurate first. If you are crossing into the opposite lane you must check in case a car, bike or motorcycle decides to overtake you on the outside. Right mirror is not sufficient as could be hidden in your door mirror
@@AdvanceDrivingSchool well l said that and still got failed🤷🏾♂️ My instructor said it's called a #blindspot for a reason; the reason being that mirrors alone DON'T cover it sufficiently thus it MUST be checked otherwise it's a fault.
How about these: Driving Test Fail Compilation: th-cam.com/video/N7hFontn014/w-d-xo.html Spotting driving faults: th-cam.com/video/m97Q166d1rY/w-d-xo.html
hi, question for anyone who knows, how do you judge a 2 car length reversal? its ok with cars parked close by, but in an open road there must be a way to judge this better.
I find this one a bit difficult. I’m usually too wide so then I need to fix it and I finding it difficult as I get confused on which way to steer. I know it’s so simple but my nerves kick in and I panick😭 any tips?
The trick with steering when reversing is to steer which ever way you need to go - so if you need the back or the car to go right, steer to the right! Or of course steer left to make the car go left. It really is that simple!
3rd or 4th? We count from first line of our target bay until when the 4th line is level with half of our passenger door(if we tend to revers into left hand side bay).
Hi I enjoy watching your videos as im doing my instructor training and got my part two in two weeks, plx could you answer my question regarding do you have to indicate while pulling up on the right and also while moving away from the right to go back into left lane, my trainer couldn't answer this question
Like any other manoeuvre, use your indicators if they would help other people understand your intentions more clearly - but if there is no-one around then there is no need. In practice we generally indicate every time just in case there is someone we haven't spotted!
I failed this manoeuvre on my test because I stopped twice for both cars passing me from behind apparently I didn’t need to stop as they wasn’t affecting me , I was taugh to stop when vehicles was getting close
I see you advise to stop when carrying out the manoeuvre if traffic approaches from behind on the left hand side of the road. Should you also stop if traffic approaches in front on you on the side you have pulled over to (the right hand side of the road)?
The reason I ask is that my daughter was failed on this today. She stopped on the reverse each time traffic approached to wait for the traffic to clear. There was a traffic on the road so it took a long time to complete the manoeuvre. The assessor stated that she should not have kept stopping which went against the way she had been taught by her instructor. She's now very confused on how to complete this should she get it again in a test. It's worth noting she's had this on two tests prior and she's completed it in the same way each time. There didn't seem to be an issue on the first two tests. Very confusing.
We have always thought that it is safer to stop for any approaching traffic, as we are creating a hazardous situation. Perhaps that examiner thought that the road was wide enough that there was no need to stop. It does sound like a very harsh decision!
Whilst this video is quite a good illustration as to how to do this manoeuvre. No mention is made of rule 248 "You MUST NOT park on a road at night facing against the direction of the traffic flow unless in a recognized parking space. Laws CUR reg 101 & RVLR reg 24". I know an overall "make sure it is safe and legal statement is made", but as soon as the street lights go on this manoeuvre is technically illegal. So not sure how you teach it during the winter months. Also, due to the incredible brightness of all new cars, i think this manoeuvre should be very strongly discouraged if not banned, purely because the "parker" as they pullout have virtually no choice but to blind oncoming vehicles. I believe this manoeuvre should only be done in the most exceptional cases. I appreciate that as instructors / examiners you are following the test criteria, but seriously, this needs to be challenged. What next, teaching people how to go through red lights safely? Just because a huge number of drivers do....
On this do we stop the car if a car is approaching from the front and passes by? For example if on a busy road would we wait till there is no traffic oncoming to our front over taking us? Thank you 😊
Hi i have learning needs and i do find reading my drivings good what can i do to help get past pluss i panick on other cars coming in front of me i do love your video s
There is no substitute for lots and lots of driving practice. Over time you should notice that everything gets slightly easier, until you are able to drive on your own without getting stressed. Good luck!
We do mention that we need to look all around the car, and we can see the driver looking over both shoulders. Never move away without checking it’s definitely safe! Sorry to hear you failed though - better luck next time 👍🏼
Got this manoeuvre in my test yesterday and i was very bad i couldn't do it .how many lessons a done my instructors never done with me this manoeuvre. 😭😭😭
I had exam last month and i was nearly to my exam centre about 4 min away. I was asked do right reverse and unfortunately o got fail for this reverse right parking. One of the car came from my behind and my position was on the middle of the road and i was failed ☹️
I had exam today but I failed only for this parking. I had only 4 minor faults even i had 3 minutes left to finish my exam but unfortunately I couldn’t pass only for that parking
I literally had to do this manoeuvre today during my test. I had forgotten it was a manoeuvre and never practiced. I guessed what it was. Apparently it was ok as I passed?! I don’t see any point in doing this maneovre as I can’t see myself doing this in real life
If you mean the old ‘left reverse’ manoeuvre, then there is this (very old) video: Left Reverse | Learn to drive: Manoeuvres th-cam.com/video/ABUeMYQHEoQ/w-d-xo.html
Does anybody have any tips for how to get close to the kerb without touching it? I always park too far away because I'm scared to touch it as it's a fail
You would probably get away with a light touch, just as you would when parking on the left normally. Try pulling over quite early to give yourself lots of time to position the car before stopping. Good luck!
So the examiner fail me on this part, cause i constantly stop for the oncoming traffic behind. Apparently She said that that traffic behind wont affect us. So im confused cause i've been thought this way and thats one of the reason i failed by following it. It was a busy road and cars behind keeps coming.
That seems like a harsh decision there. We have always thought that stopping for any traffic is the safest thing to do - but clearly that examiner thought different in that situation. Better luck next time. 👍🏼
Hi, so I've failed for a similar thing before so I wanted to check: when you say stop the manoeuvre if anything is coming towards you does that mean in both directions, and as soon as you see it? Thanks
Yes, we would stop moving whenever anyone approaches us from any direction. If they are miles away we can keep moving, but definitely stop once they are near to us so that they know it is safe to pass us.
Advance Driving School sorry when u say stop do we need to apply the hand brake or just the foot brakes? Also when we are changing the lanes do we need to look over our right shoulder during this manoeuvre
You can use the handbrake if you like, but usually we just use the foot brake. Using the foot brake puts the brake lights on, which can show the other driver that it’s safe to pass us. We do need to check for danger over both shoulders, just in case!
@@AdvanceDrivingSchool I was told by instructor to only stop for oncoming traffic from right, as traffic across the road will not be affected. Test tomorrow and confused now :(
Reversing cameras only cover a small area behind the car - just a few metres normally. To ensure we are aware of any nearby hazards we must use the windows and mirrors to look all around the car.
Hi, after you pull over to right and reverse, do you need to use your indicator before moving off, if no other vehicles are around? Will it be classed as a fault for not indicating?
Another really helpful video! One question, though, in general and for this: if there are no cars around at all, do we still need to indicate? Apparently, for a while, it was seen as a minor indicating when there were no cars around as 'it shows that you are not really aware of your surroundings'. I'm not sure if that applies to the 2018 tests. Thanks!
We indicate for everyone, not just for cars. So if there is a pedestrian or cyclist nearby, they could benefit from knowing our intentions - so in reality its just easier to indicate every time just incase there is someone watching us. This is fine on the test btw.
The most important thing is that the car is in full control. We generally recommend the ‘feeding the wheel’ technique, but it doesn’t really matter if we cross our hands occasionally.
+Miranda Hall Normally if the examiner takes control it would be a fail. But the DVSA have said that if a car pulls up in front and blocks your view the examiner can control the situation and give ‘appropriate advice’ so the test can continue safely (without giving a fail).
Why do we stop reversing when cars are coming towards (from behind) us on the other side of the road? We are not on their side of the road, we’re not really influencing their driving?! Isn’t it for oncoming cars either from behind or front of our car on the same side of the road as ours that we have to stop reversing for? Thanks
I guess it depends on how wide the road is. Since we can’t predict how much of a hazard other drivers think we are being (they might be inexperienced or nervous) we’d recommend stopping for everyone, just in case. Better safe than sorry 😉
We would stop for any vehicle in front or behind us - just like every other manoeuvre. Keep an eye on pedestrians, but unless they get close to the car we wouldn’t normally stop. 👍🏼
I have one question while pull up on left or right and car is stopped, should we need to On hazard /parking lights? Or only Left or Right signal is enough? Thanks in advance.
Do we need to pull to the left before we go to the right unlike you pulled to the right whilst driving. I understand that the examiner will ask to pull to the left first and then pull right and do this task?
When reversing back in the video the guy did not look back through the back window? So can we use the rear view mirror to look back and side mirror on the test to keep align to the kerb? Been told to look back through the back window or be fail? Thanks
Once moving there is normally no need to check blind spots before signalling - as if we have been using our mirrors properly we would know if it is safe or not to carry out the manoeuvre. Of course, we can check blind spots if we really feel the need, but it wasn’t necessary in that situation.
When i turn to reverse my left leg isnt long enough for total control on the clutch. Not sure what to do about that because i am definitely not too far away from the pedals, i never had this problem in instructors’ cars
I just failed my test today because of this, It was pull up on the right and reverse 2 places but apparently your not aloud to reverse when things are coming towards you so i failed, this was not stated on this video 😓
3:52 “If we spot traffic approaching us we should stop the car, as we don’t want to cause any danger. While we are waiting we should look around carefully and make sure the road is clear before continuing to reverse.” Sorry to hear that you didn't pass, and better luck next time :-)
failed today on this maneuver After i reversed i put it in gear, did my checks, put the signal on and a fiesta came in front of me round the bend He stopped in front of me at about 10 meters, to let me go...i waited about 5 sec just to make sure he s not moving...and i drove off Examiner told me i failed because even though he stopped to give me way to go back into my lane, i should have cancelled the signal.. let him go on the other side of the road and pass me.. and then i should have moved off...what happened if he just waited there for 20 mins ? ..i m gutted...other than that i had 2 minors..
Yes I did! At the time I was too focussed on filming everything with the drone and other cameras and rolled about a car's length too far past where I meant to stop. I noticed it when editing the video, and it's taken 4 years or so for someone to spot it! Well done.
The examiner will only expect us to park ‘reasonably close’ (around 50cm or less) to the kerb so there isn’t really any need to a reference point. If you Reverse very slowly (
We recommend looking through the rear window when reversing, but if you can use the other windows and the mirrors well then you should be able to spot any danger. Just imagine parking in a busy car park - just look wherever you need to so that there is no chance of hitting something behind you!
For the purposes of the driving test, we always stop in a place that we would be happy to leave the car - so would avoid bus stops etc. Even in 'real life' we would park somewhere else - just in case the bus came before we could move!
Hi, my ADI has told me the right signal MUST be on whilst carrying out this manoeuvre but I can't find anything confirming this ? Is this correct ? Thanks
We would indicate when pulling over, but cancel the signal before reversing. Just signal whenever you think it would help others understand what we are doing. 👍🏼
Stupid question but say I'm driving along with traffic behind and am asked to do this manoeuvre. Do I stop in the middle of the road (as though turning down a side road), which may slow or stop traffic behind? Or do I just not do it at all unless it's clear? I was taught that anything that may alter another driver's direction or speed is bad.
Advance Driving School oh okay but what if someone’s already been learning the old way but their test is booked for after the changes? Does that mean that they’ll have to learn the new way?
yes, and anyone with a test booked between now and the 4th should have got an email from them explaining it (i did) - they also say that if you fail or the test cant be done for any reason and needs to be rescheduled after the 4th it will be the new test as well.

We indicate for everyone, not just for cars. So if there is a pedestrian or cyclist nearby, they could benefit from knowing our intentions - so in reality its just easier to indicate every time just incase there is someone watching us. This is fine on the test btw.
Thank you!!! Getting closer and closer to the test and I'm asking everyone more and more questions! Heh
🙏🙏🙏🙏
How come no push/pull at 4.44? I thought it was the way all driving instructors advise? tut tut
The most important thing is that the car is in full control. We generally recommend the ‘feeding the wheel’ technique, but it doesn’t really matter if we cross our hands occasionally.
@@AdvanceDrivingSchool okay thanks
If the examiner takes control that's a fail isn't it?
+Miranda Hall Normally if the examiner takes control it would be a fail. But the DVSA have said that if a car pulls up in front and blocks your view the examiner can control the situation and give ‘appropriate advice’ so the test can continue safely (without giving a fail).
the music >.
If there is any pedestrian oncoming or coming from behind we must stop the vehicle?
We would stop for any vehicle in front or behind us - just like every other manoeuvre. Keep an eye on pedestrians, but unless they get close to the car we wouldn’t normally stop. 👍🏼
I have one question while pull up on left or right and car is stopped, should we need to On hazard /parking lights? Or only Left or Right signal is enough?
Thanks in advance.
Once we have stopped we should cancel our indicators, so that we don’t distract others. We would not use our hazard lights for the same reason.
Do we need to pull to the left before we go to the right unlike you pulled to the right whilst driving. I understand that the examiner will ask to pull to the left first and then pull right and do this task?
In our experience the examiner just asks you to pull over on the right directly (without stopping in the left first) just as shown in the video. 👍🏼
I Failed Reversing 2 car lengths for stopping to far away from the Kerb. so which advise would anyone have for this type of Manoeuvre
Like the other manoeuvres, just keep practicing until you have mastered it. Better luck next time 🤞🏼
When reversing back in the video the guy did not look back through the back window? So can we use the rear view mirror to look back and side mirror on the test to keep align to the kerb? Been told to look back through the back window or be fail? Thanks
We should look all around the car for danger - including through the rear window. Sorry we didn’t show that more clearly.
Why do you need to check the right-hand blind spot when you reverse on the right?
In case a pedestrian walks off the pavement behind our car?
@@AdvanceDrivingSchool Is that not covered by checking the right mirror?
No, there is a large blind spot area that the mirror doesn’t cover.
Clutch down when pulling into the right or just be in a low gear, turn right then clutch down when putting into first?
I’m not quite sure what you mean - but in case it helps here is a video about clutch control. 👍🏼 th-cam.com/video/8O3ZSqmJ9Yc/w-d-xo.html
Why did you not check the blind spot before signalling or at the least before crossing the lane?
Once moving there is normally no need to check blind spots before signalling - as if we have been using our mirrors properly we would know if it is safe or not to carry out the manoeuvre. Of course, we can check blind spots if we really feel the need, but it wasn’t necessary in that situation.
When i turn to reverse my left leg isnt long enough for total control on the clutch. Not sure what to do about that because i am definitely not too far away from the pedals, i never had this problem in instructors’ cars
You need to be able to push the clutch down fully, so you must move the seat forward and then adjust the steering wheel or seat back rest to suit.
While we are waiting we should look around carefully and make sure the road is clear before continuing to reverse.” Sorry to hear that you didn't pass, and better luck next time :-)
What if the right hand side has double yellow lines? Is it still OK to do the maneuver?
We would avoid stopping on double yellow lines during the driving test.
failed today on this maneuver
After i reversed i put it in gear, did my checks, put the signal on and a fiesta came in front of me round the bend
He stopped in front of me at about 10 meters, to let me go...i waited about 5 sec just to make sure he s not moving...and i drove off
Examiner told me i failed because even though he stopped to give me way to go back into my lane, i should have cancelled the signal.. let him go on the other side of the road and pass me.. and then i should have moved off...what happened if he just waited there for 20 mins ?
..i m gutted...other than that i had 2 minors..
Oh no. Sorry to hear that you didn’t pass, but the examiner is correct. Better luck next time. 🤞🏼
does the examiner tell u when u have gone back two car lengths
Probably, but only if you go too far. I guess it depends on the individual examiner - you could always ask if it’s far enough if you’re not sure?
Advance Driving School could you fail the test for going back too little or too far
No - they would tell you to reverse further or stop if needed.
thankyou very much
Mine told me when to stop because I kept going and I still passed so don't worry!
Is it compulsory to keep looking rear window in reversing two car’s length?
You need to keep looking all around your car for danger, not only behind you.
@@AdvanceDrivingSchool thank you
Did u not pull up to close to junction?
Yes I did! At the time I was too focussed on filming everything with the drone and other cameras and rolled about a car's length too far past where I meant to stop. I noticed it when editing the video, and it's taken 4 years or so for someone to spot it! Well done.
@@AdvanceDrivingSchool thanks wasnt having a go just teaching girl friend, great videos 👍
How we will select reference point that our car not touch kerb and we get able to reverse straight.
The examiner will only expect us to park ‘reasonably close’ (around 50cm or less) to the kerb so there isn’t really any need to a reference point. If you Reverse very slowly (
Hi, I've never been told to look behind me at the back window when reversing. I always look in the mirror and check around me. Is this wrong?
We recommend looking through the rear window when reversing, but if you can use the other windows and the mirrors well then you should be able to spot any danger. Just imagine parking in a busy car park - just look wherever you need to so that there is no chance of hitting something behind you!
Can you stop on the right at a bus stop because you will be reversing 2 car lengths?
For the purposes of the driving test, we always stop in a place that we would be happy to leave the car - so would avoid bus stops etc. Even in 'real life' we would park somewhere else - just in case the bus came before we could move!
@@AdvanceDrivingSchool thanks for the response i will.avoid driveways, bus stops and junctions when parking
What a crappy thing given by DVSA, seems almost useless. I would always park on the left side.
Agreed - it’s always better to park on the left. 👍🏼
Got this monoevoure and failed, better luck next time
what is that device on the center? looks like a radar/ radar detector
It's called a ControlPAL - we made a video about it, check our channel out!
@@AdvanceDrivingSchool Thanks for your reply. That's what I would do but it was made clear that it must be on for the whole manoeuvre ?
That’s not how we teach the manoeuvre. Perhaps ask them why they think it should be done like this?
@@AdvanceDrivingSchool yes will do thanks. This is for Part 2
Do you have to look over both shoulders whilst reversing
When manoeuvring we will need to look over both shoulders if we are to be aware of what is all around our car - and react if needed.
@@AdvanceDrivingSchool thanks
How do you judge two car lengths?
It only needs to be approximate - we look at what we are stopped next to (hedge, gate etc) and then estimate our distance from that.
Stop as if turning right, and it’s ok if following traffic has to wait in this situation 👍🏼
How can we tell if we reverse two can length?
Just guess. If we go a little too far the examiner will tell us we've gone far enough.
I just wanted to ask on what exact date will these changes occur? Thank you.
+Tobi Oyedele The new test starts from 4th December 2017 👍🏼
Advance Driving School oh okay but what if someone’s already been learning the old way but their test is booked for after the changes? Does that mean that they’ll have to learn the new way?
+Tobi Oyedele Yes, but the DVSA has posted full details of the new test to all UK driving instructors so there shouldn’t be any surprises.
yes, and anyone with a test booked between now and the 4th should have got an email from them explaining it (i did) - they also say that if you fail or the test cant be done for any reason and needs to be rescheduled after the 4th it will be the new test as well.
Advance Driving School k
anyone know whick model of kia this car is? i like it
It's a 2015 Kia Rio.
