How to do a garter tab cast on. This is frequently used to start top down shawls. I like to use four stitches, but you will often see three stitches used. www.sapphiresnp... #howtoknit #knitting #knittingstitches
You did great! I 've never seen it before, but knitting for over 44 years! Thank you so much! It's cool for triangle shawls etc, isn't it? I like it! Your vid.is so well done no question left, l subscribed! Be blessed and healthy, stay at home, if posseble! Yours, Conny L. P.S.: You can give us hearts, l give you mine: ❤
This is such a clear tutorial. I have watched others on TH-cam but they don't compare to your calm communication. You make knitting look enjoyable and relaxing, even the smooth motions of your hands is awesome. I try to emulate your style and have found it to be fun and therapeutic. Thank you for helping me become a better knitter🙂 Birda
you have made this look very easy(and makes a lot of sense) with your demo and instructions ... I haven't knit a triangle shawl yet but I found a pattern similar to the sample in your video (and it looks do-able) ... thanks again for helping us newbies ENJOY this great hobby - have a safe holiday season ! - a subscriber
Thank you for clearing this up, I've been eyeballing the Begonia Swirl Shawl on Ravelry for quite some time now, and this cast on was ultra confusing. As always, you answer all of my questions with your videos. Thank you!!! 💖
I have a pattern I want to knit but it specified 3 stitch cast on to end up with 11 stitches and a 3 stitch border. I would like a 4 stitch border so I need to add 2 stitches to the overall stitch count. My question is how many rows I would I need to add to the original row count of 10 rows?
I would just follow the pattern as instructed, and then work your preferred increase method on the first row after so you have the four stitch border. For instance, knit front and back into one of the established border stitches so you have your four stitch border.
@@iknitwithcatfur I tried with some cotton yarn and it looks like I just need to add another row instead of 5 ridges or ten rows I did 6 ridges or 12 rows and it worked out very nicely
Thank you. I did this once or twice before and really struggled to get those stitches on but...I ran across a new direction today on a pattern that wants me to crochet a chain of four, knit two stitches into the "Bumps" on the chain and then knit hmmm..6 rows..THEN pick up stitches on two sides fro the bumps. THEN you take out the chain (really? ) I can't even get a feed bag to unzip for me. SO it's ugly. I am going to do your thing, work it so I have 7 stitches and THEN start my pretty shawl pattern. I HATE provisional cast ons but have done many of them on cowls. I am with you on "Fiddley " Thanks for the video.
belcas61 Look on laylock.org for her shawl cheat sheet, there is a sheet for top down shawls that start at the top. Or check Ravelry, I am sure you will find a bunch of patterns there.
Goes to show I've been doing it wrong! No wonder mine were looking a little too pointy. Well, now I know what to do. By the way, your needles are just gorgeous. They looked like wood? What brand do you use?
Oh, do you like them? I have Knitter's Pride Nova in my straights and Karbonz in my circulars, and I love the Nova's and hate the Karbonz, so I need to get me something else. I'm a bit wary to try another KP circular, but yours looked so smooth with the yarn. Also, do you know the yarn that you used? Was it something you dyed yourself or something you found?
Amelia Collins Yes, I like them! I also have the Novas, both regular needles and squares, and the Karbonz and I like them all. The rosewood cubics are also nice. Lantern Moon Ebony needles are wonderful. Chiao Goo needles are very nice - very smooth, I REALLY like those. I've pretty much tried every needle on the market :-) That is my own hand dyed DK superwash merino. That color is sold out, but I have lots of other colors and weights if you'd like to take a look www.sapphiresnpurls.storenvy.com.
¡ Hola, se que has hecho el tutorial éste hace años, pero me gustaría que por lo menos sigas por unas cuantas vueltas mas lo q has iniciado para poder ver como organizar el tejido!! desde ya muchas gracias y te dejo un saludo!!
This helps but I highly recommend NOT attempting your first triangular shawl with black yarn. In love black, gray, silvery yarns but not to start the garter stitch. Yesterday I tried so many times and nearly wanted to snap my clover knitting needles in half- LOL.
Also avoid boucle type yarns as well when starting out. My very first sweater was knit with boucle - impossible to see stitches! I still have that sweater as a reminder that since gauge in a sweater is important, don't use boucle lol
Personally, I think the Garter Tab cast on is over-rated. Garter stitch, to me, is very unattractive. I would do the 6 rows (or in your case) 8 rows in stockinette. It's not difficult to equally divide the pickup stitches. Truthfully, none of this is necessary to start a triangular shawl.

You never cease to amaze me. I don't think I'll ever have a need to do this but I wanted to watch you do it anyway because you are just incredible.
Aw, thank you! I avoided this cast on and top down triangles for years; then I tried it and now it is the only way I make my triangle shawls!
Thank you thank you! I've always had problems getting my garter tab to look neat. Your video has really made a difference. Excellent video help.
Absolutely the best video I've seen on this cast on! Especially like "it doesn't have to be perfect "! Thanks!
Thanks for watching!

@@iknitwithcatfur Thank you for your reply. I will try that . I am going to wear it at our 50th wedding anniversary, when we go out next year

I'm glad you worked it out, and congrats on your anniversary!
Great tutorial and a very nice yarn too. Can l ask the name of your yarn please?
Thank you, I was using some of my hand dyed yarn in the video.
Thank you so much. You really helped me out a lot.

Haha, I'm with you on the feed bag issues :-)
What brand of circulars are you using?? I have lots - but they do not have the sizes marked on them as I observe yours do. Thank you!
Those are Knitters Pride Dreamz - excellent needles! amzn.to/28ThlDE
sometimes I put a locking stitch marker in so I can easily find my cast on edge again.
Really appreciate your videos, thank you for this clear explanation of this technique.
I love your tutorial! Do you have a simple pattern for a shawl that I can begin with? I am an advance beginner knitter.
belcas61 Look on laylock.org for her shawl cheat sheet, there is a sheet for top down shawls that start at the top. Or check Ravelry, I am sure you will find a bunch of patterns there.
If you do it with 3 stitches, do you knit 6 rows and turn, pick up and knit 3 sts, turn, pick up and knit 3 sts, so that you have a total of 9 sts??
Yes, that works also and is usually what pattern instructions use.
Goes to show I've been doing it wrong! No wonder mine were looking a little too pointy. Well, now I know what to do. By the way, your needles are just gorgeous. They looked like wood? What brand do you use?
These are Knitters Pride Dreamz, and yes they are wood.

Very interesting and very clear tutorial as usual. You really are an excellent teacher.
Does this become a corner of a triangular shawl?
drnili That is the top of the shawl. You then would add increases depending on what shape you'd like the shawl to be.
Thank you! Very helpful.
Very clear instruction... thank you :-)
why do you use four sts instead of three?
Because I like to work with even numbers, and 4 sts gives the same result as 3 sts. Just my personal preference.
Thank you, that helped me a lot:)
Great video! Thanks so much!
Great video... thank you!!!
Glad you liked it!
