Knitting Help - "Garter Tab", or Lace Shawl Beginning

  • Many lace shawl patterns use the "garter tab" technique to get you started. It's brilliant, but confusing, especially since you're usually working with tiny needles and yarn when you're doing it. I break it down with big needles and yarn to demonstrate how it's done.
    Information on things you'll see in the video:
    The pattern for the fuchsia lace shawl can be found here:
    www.ravelry.com/patterns/libra...
    (I don't have a Ravelry page for this project - I believe I used Malabrigo lace yarn.)
    The pattern for the green scarf on the mannequin:
    www.ravelry.com/patterns/libra...
    My Ravelry project page for the green scarf (includes yarn info):
    www.ravelry.com/projects/veryp...
    The bulky blue yarn I'm using to demonstrate is Knit Picks Swish Bulky:
    www.knitpicks.com/cfyarns/yarn...
    The double-pointed needles I'm using are Crystal Palace wood needles.

    I've just restarted to knit after 30 years of basic knitting and purling and am looking at all the patterns on the internet and whenever I see a technique or stitch I don't know, I look to see if you have a tutorial and you always do! Thank you so much for your generosity in teaching so many how to knit!

    Thank you! You got me going on this. I'm making my first Boneyard Shawl. I've been trying to find the right thing for some yarn I've got, and finally tonight, I decided that would be the pattern. Thanks for helping me get past the first part and get it started.

    • @vivianpowell1732
      @vivianpowell1732 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have made a couple of Boneyard Shawls (Stephen West's pattern), but his pattern does not call for this garter stitch tab technique. It does call for increasing by using M1L and M1R stitches. Perhaps there's more than one shawl pattern called "Boneyard". Is yours by Stephen West?

    • @PattymacMakes
      @PattymacMakes 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@vivianpowell1732 I made the Boneyard from Stephen West and used the garter tab to start it. I alway start my shawls like that and use the increase stitches you mention. It's fairly standard.

    • @vivianpowell1732
      @vivianpowell1732 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PattymacMakes But am I correct in thinking that the Boneyard Shawl pattern itself does not include starting with a garter stitch tab? Apparently that is a step that you have added to that pattern.

    • @PattymacMakes
      @PattymacMakes 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@vivianpowell1732 It's been so many years I can't remember now. I'm pretty sure he starts with a garter tab. I don't think it matters since it's just a basic shawl based on increasing at the beginning and end of each right side row.

    • @vivianpowell1732
      @vivianpowell1732 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PattymacMakes The Boneyard Shawl starts with a CO of 5 stitches then there's a Set Up consisting of three rows where the increases come from working M1 stitches. So I guess that Set Up section is analogous to a garter stitch tab. Thanks for replying so promptly.

  • @saprater25
    @saprater25 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Wish I would have waited a bit before starting my lace shawl. It uses this very method, and I was so confused b/c of the very reason you stated: it was done on itty bitty lace yarn. I had the hardest time trying to make out the individual stitches or estimate the best spot to pick up stitches. Eventually managed it, but I have an unsightly nub/bump from where I didn't go far enough down on the cast-on edge. But now I have this tutorial and will know better next time.

    Hi, I followed the instructions and the finished product looks like what yours does (like a half-hexagon-ish), but when I turn the work around, there's like a little tab of extra stitches (not live ones) just flapping out like a skin tag. Is that normal? Or should it be flat like the front?

    You are correct - a shawl that is knit bottom-up won't use this technique. There isn't really a specific technique to demonstrate for a bottom-up shawl, you really just cast-on and each pattern is going to be different from there. But I do have a video that may help you - it's called "Knitting Help - Casting-on Many Stitches". Sorry, TH-cam won't let me give you a link here in the comments, but you can search for it on my channel page. Good luck!

    Such a great tutorial Staci!
    I have one small question. When a pattern that uses garter tab cast on says, "pick up and knit along garter bumps" and "pick up and knit along cast on egde" does that mean I should pick up the stitches then knot before moving on? As in; pick up along garter bump side and knit then pick up along cast on edge and knit? Does that make sense? In your video you picked up only...

    • @verypinkknits
      @verypinkknits  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Amy - I've never seen a pattern call for picking up stitches the way you've described! Usually, stitches are picked up along all three sides *except* the cast-on edge, as I've demonstrated in this video, and I can't imagine why it would be necessary to pick up from the CO edge. My assumption is that the pattern wants you to pick up the stitches all at once - they would likely specify that you need to break the yarn and tie a knot, if that was necessary. You're going to need to contact the pattern designer for further guidance (Ravelry message is a good way).

    Question...Instead of casting on three stitches to start, can you do a provisional cast on? That would prevent needing to pick up the stitches along the bottom...

    • @verypinkknits
      @verypinkknits  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sunshine Sheltray - you can give that a try, but when you're actually knitting a garter tab using lace yarn (and not the bulky yarn I demonstrated with) the gauge is so small, that removing a provisional CO and picking up the live stitches would be far more difficult than just picking up and knitting three. But if you're curious, it would only take a few minutes to give it a try.

    @verypink knits, I'm currently working on the Geology Shawl by: VeryBusyMonkeyDesigns. I'm a very tight knitter. My Garter Tab Cast On is way too tight. I'm hoping it will look better after blocking. Is there anything I can do in the future to keep this from happening again? Should I go up one or two needle sizes for the Cast On? I would be extremely grateful for any advice. I Love your tutorials & podcast! I wouldn't be a knitter if I hadn't discovered your channel. Your teaching has changed my life for the better. Thank you, Staci!

    • @verypinkknits

      If your problem is just with the garter tab being tight, you can always use a bigger needle for that part, then switch to the correct needle size after you've picked up stitches.

    • @verypinkknits

      Any bumps in the fabric should block out if you're using wool...if it doesn't, then there is an issue with the pattern and the way the increases are set.

    All of the information to items you see in my videos (like what I'm wearing, what the mannequin is wearing, yarn I'm using, etc) can be found with links in the video description field, just below the video.

    I can do the tab, but it always looks stretched, stressed and sticks out in the knitting like a sore thumb no matter how hard I try. It looks crappy in my beautiful knits. Why do they design so many garments with this terrible technique?
