Why do people always compare? The only things that should ever be compared are supermarket prices! Why compare art? It is so subjective. People saying 'oh this is better than Whitney's' are as dumb and insecure as people who say 'oh, the book's better than themovie.' Again, the perception of art is so personal and subjective so why not just say 'I like this or that better than such and such' instead of saying 'this is better than that.'
+Bertoboy41 Why do people always compare? Answer: Human nature. Why compare art? Well, first off, some will contend that "pop" music isn't really art since it's created, marketed to the masses to sell lots of records to make lots of money and is considered less "art" than music that isn't meant to make lots of money being marketed and sold to the masses. Other forms of music isn't marketed and sold in the same manner and it's not as commercially successful and marketed that way and they will think that sort of music is more "artful". This song is more art than it is created just to sell albums, so I would personally put this song leaning more towards art, but it was turned into a commercially successful song. I know you may not like to hear that, but that's what SOME music experts/critics/musicologists think. Here's a link the discussion of art music vs non-art music. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Art_music I know it's a Wikipedia entry, but they cite musicologists, books, etc. that cover the topic. I don't know if I entirely agree with the article, but I do feel there is a certain amount of truth to it. The record labels also compare versions before they release and sell it, and if they do their job, they'll release the best version and marketed it and if done properly the song will sell well so the people involved make a lot of money. Obviously, Whitney's version was the biggest selling version of this song, so the market in general decided which one they "preferred" by buying copies of it. The lyrics haven't really changed, but the melody line and arrangement of the song did change between this version, Dolly's version and Whitney's version.
You might not like it personally, but like it or not 9 times out of 10 the book IS better than the movie, a perfect example would be Lord of the Rings. Hollywood takes liberties and embelishes the original content and adds unnecessary fluff and glitz to appease the sponsers and pc crowd. Books tend to carry deeper messages and many plots left out of the movie that many fans are angry they left it out to add some unneeded crap in it's place.
@Bertoboy41... You're right. It's dumb to compare, but 90% of what we do as a human race is compare. Nonetheless, I like the 3 popular versions: Parton, Doe, and Houston. They're all wonderful. They're all produced differently. They're all sung by people that sing very well. I enjoyed this version!
Beautiful. Amazing how you can love both melodies. Whitney was/is second to none-perhaps, the greatest voice ever, but I harken back to that great scene w/Kevin & Whitney within the bar 🙏

Dolly Parton wrote this and sung it twice before anyone and she had a number one hit in 1974 with the original version and then again in 1982 from the movie The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas co-starring Burt Reynolds. Linda Ronstadt first covered it in 1975 for her Prisoner In Disguise Album, LeAnn Rimes covered it too and Dolly Parton and Vince Gill took it to number 15 on the country music singles chart in 1995. With this the third time for Dolly to chart the song she may very well be the only person to have taken the same song to the top 15 hit list in three different decades

Never have I realised more that a little research can go a long way toward putting things into perspective.
Yeah, Elvis asked for the song but Dolly refuse as Elvis' s managers asked for including credits in the song copyrights. Smart move on the part of Dolly as now it is reaping suxh high royalties for the song withoot ever having to split the money with the estate of Elvis.
