  • The Corn Palace - also known as a folk-art wonder on the prairie of South Dakota - is worth a stop when traveling I-90 in South Dakota! The big beautiful building with murals made of corn covering the exterior, is a focal point on Main Street in Mitchell, South Dakota. It's a fun place to take a travel break and soak in the experience, while enjoying some delicious fresh popcorn! They say over 500,000 tourists each year check out this fabulously unique place decorated with corn cobs, designed to celebrate the state’s agriculture. The idea for the palace dates back to 1892, with a small building that was replaced 2 times with bigger buildings, soon also deemed too small, making way for the current elaborate structure completed in 1921. An arena in the center of the building hosts basketball tournaments, as well as community events such as proms, stage shows, banquets, graduations, and concerts. Lawrence Welk has performed there! USA Today named the palace one of the Top 10 places in America for high school basketball!

We also made a stop in Huron, South Dakota to lay eyes on the "World's Largest Pheasant." Located on Highway 14, the 22 ton fiberglass and steel pheasant proudly stands 28 feet tall, designating Huron as a premier pheasant hunting location since 1959.
Check out the website for the historical details, of which there are many!

We had a wonderful experience in South Dakota! From the Laura Ingalls Wilder sites in DeSmet to the Badlands and all the fun stuff in between! The Corn Palace was a fun surprise!

Great video! I went there with my parents & sisters when I was four, we were visiting my aunt & uncle. I remember looking at souvenirs! Hope they let Roxy in!

Roxy would have loved the smell of that popcorn! We didn't try to get her in, though they may have welcomed her! It was a fun stop,

I used to drive from Ohio to Seattle once a year, taking I-90 straight through Michell, SD. Mitchell is about 1/2 way through SD & the Corn Palac is literally the only thing to see. Well...there is a Dairy Queen. I did like seeing the murals change every time I came through. It was hokey, but in a quaint, down-home sense. The people there were the "salt of the earth" type.

At first I thought, ho hum, it wasn't going to be interesting but it was. My very first question as you got started was, that can't be corn on the outside and it would have to be replaced often, LOL. $130k annually and they don't charge and entrance fee? Nice video, thanks for sharing.

Glad you enjoyed it! It’s an interesting place for sure! Maybe they sell enough merchandise and popcorn to cover the costs. They say 500,000 people a year stop by!

My aunt took her family by the corn 🌽 palace in the 60s although I have not been there. It's a treasure of the great American road trip. May they continue to be there for decades to come. Is Mount Rushmore close by?

@@alangray9117 It truly is a treasure! Mount Rushmore is a little over 4 hours away. We really enjoyed South Dakota! We camped on the rim of the Badlands and enjoyed camping on the original homestead of Laura Ingalls Wilder in DeSmet. So awesome!
