I think that's exactly the camp hatchet I've been looking for. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. The knife is just gravy. Always look forward to Schrade Saturday! Thanks Bryan!!
What a great little system to give as a gift to someone just starting out in bushcraft and/or preparedness. Also looks like a great combo for a get-home kit (extended). If you lose one or both, you are only out 25 bucks. Not too shabby!
All of Us Men are Little Boy's at Heart , I always enjoy seeing how Brian's face lights up when He gets to throw something at the tree ! It never fails to bring a smile to my face , Keep throwing them and We will keep watching them !
Oh my, that is a sweet deal. I have used the SCAXE10 for over a year now. I have one in my car and one as my camping hatchet. I agree. It is nice. I have chopped kindling, fell some smaller trees, used it as a hammer and sliced pork fillet with it. No problems whatsoever. I like it a lot. Got even better when I put convex edge on it. For the size it is an impressive little axe/ hatchet. My mom even wanted one for gardening. Lol. Those two with that price is really nice. I got me a SCAXE4 tomahawk couple days ago and I´m looking forward to test it but it has been raining big time today since the morning. Have a great day Bryan :) Big thumbs up! Ps. Your balance testing always makes me smile like a kid. Never get tired of watching that. :)
The only complsint i had was the knife was really light weight but 2 yrs later the combo still works. The hachet being full tang as allowed to use the hatchet to beat on a steel splitting wedge
Brian, take the hatchet and dip the handle in Plasti-Dip tool handle dip 1 coat every 45 minutes. After five coats it will be soft and pliable but won't stick to your hand. Then grip it nice and tight. It will give you a truly custom grip and the extra rubber will really help with the shock. Plasti-Dip is great for your machete handles too.
Thanks to your review I purchased the combo set. Well worth the cash! The hatchet handle would be perfect if it hand the knifes handle. Both came pretty sharp and they will hold an edge very well! I put both tools to the test and I gotta say you can't pass up on this deal! ENJOY THE OUTDOORS!
@@adam.stachowski well after 2 years, they both still see plenty of action. Typically I use the knife for making kindling for camp fires. It has taken quite the beating and still holding strong. The hatchet will last forever as long as you're not splitting rocks. Do I still recommend... yes sir!
Brian, I JUST bought that blade. They are marketing it as a Mini Machete with a black blade, and a camouflage pattern (Like you see on hunting gear) on the handle and sheath. I purchased it at Academy Sports and the silly thing is that they had two display boxes on the top of the shelves, where they put extra stuff. They are only $14.99 and so I treated myself. Minor differences, but wanted to be accurate and address my mistake. And the camo pattern is called "snowblind".

Exactly, you could always give someone the machete that doesn't have a blade out in the woods with you an keep the hatchet as long as you have a knife for food prep an the hatchet for jarder wood projects.good deal in my opinion as well
Just purchased these items and have to tell ya, they paid me to take the knife. The axe alone was $29.11 the combo was $24.99. So they basically paid me to buy the knife. Have not tested either yet, but will be doing so on my next outing. Enjoy your vids and you have ALOT of good info that I take to heart. Glad you tested these and look forward for more testing in the future.
Unbelievable the way that little leaf ended up right where you wanted us to look. At one point you walked up to the camera to show us the curls and stepped on the branch with the leaf. Tough little branch it came right back to the same place. lol
$1.50 for a blade that should work a while is always a good deal. Might try and see if Vicks Vaporub really works as a skeeter repellent. Also used as an antiseptic for minor cuts and abrasions and "fire starter". I've a very small jar of Vicks in the survival stuffs.
Because of ur channel i baught the combo.didnt like the handle to narrow.wraped it in paracord now it feels great.luv the hatchet. Thanks for recommending it.luv ur channel. Very informative
Great review Bryan! You can't beat that combo price. Glad you didn't need anymore band aids or stitches at that. Thanks and have a great weekend. God bless always
Forward to 04/07/2018 and Amazon has raised the combo price to $37.99. I already have a SCHF 9 and I love it! I was never into recurved blades, kukri-like, however, after using it on several camp trips it performs like a beast.
Survival On Purpose I have no doubts. I use cheap Filipino blades here and they work fine. The trick is to use each blade for the purpose it's meant to serve. Knife for cutting, hatchet for chopping, etc. I love it that Schrade offers lower priced knives. Not everyone is willing or able to afford $100 for a knife they take in the woods with them. :-)
Just realized that you are a plumber. I knew that there was a reason I like you...lol. My dad was a plumber and I did it with him for a couple years. I'm an IT professional now, but I miss those plumbing days. Thumbs up on the vids as always.
I bought that combo , put them in my gmc pickup, I know where they are , after I remember putting them in it . When I bought mine at Walmart, basically I got it cheaper than buying 1 piece at the time . They make mistakes in Walmarts , bought ever box of 22 magnum bullets they had for 1.00 a box . Bought a brick of 22 wrf for 1.00 a box another time they ran through my old 22 magnum like they were made for it
Hi Brian, I’m watching this 4 years after it was made. I enjoyed this video. I’m not sure if I would buy it for the knife but I really like the looks of the hatchet. Best wishes.
The combo is available now (1/26/2020) on Amazon for $23.99. It is temporarily out of stock, but Amazon is taking orders at that price. (Just placed an order of my own.)
I was that some were, but not at Wall-Mart. Like you said hatchet good, knife will work. In the 60's when I was a kid. My cousin's and I would only take a hatchet and our knives in the woods. Use built all kinds of things. We were young but our family's trusted us. And those dogs sound like small dogs. They do bark alot!
Survival On Purpose hmm that is a really good question? If it is sharp, pointy, bladed, edged, or known to my 2 year old son as a hi-ya, you will throw it.
Thanks Brian! I've been waiting to find an excuse to get another SCAXE10, because I love that little hatchet, and you just gave me one! I just put the combo on order. By the way, as of the time I placed my order the combo is $24.99 but the SCAXE10 by itself is $26.17. So it's like they're PAYING you $1.18 to order the knife/machete! The knife my not be the greatest blade ever, or made out of a super steel that can cut space/time and still hold it's edge, but it certainly seems functional enough for a car emergency kit and since they're knocking down the price of the axe and then GIVING you the knife... How do you pass that up?
The steel doesn't fracture, so you can fix the dings. Hard to beat that. Half round super fine single cut file will do, add a ceramic rod and you are in bidness. Always keep a half round file in my brute force field sharpening system (BFFSS) for damaged recurves and such. The flat side is great. Actually, you can get a decent edge from just the file done right. Throw in a ceramic rod and maybe even a strop...... well you get the idea. Steel that soft can be a good thing for something so inexpensive. The hollow grind eventually becomes a scandi grind as you sharpen it to a nub.
Sportsman's Guide, and Midway USA have those combos for less than $25.00 as of 07/27/2018 !! Fixing to order from Midway along with a Cold Steel cane knife to make a kukri out of !!
I ordered the SCaxe10 solo. The combination pack, at least currently, runs at a $17.00 premium over just the hatchet. If I needed a knife (still have the 1980s Schrade knife and stone my dad gave me when I was in scouts... I'd never willingly give them up.) I wish the combo was still as cheap as you showed...
Hey Bryan. I hope you made it through the hurricanes okay. Do you need anything? I don't know what is going on with Schrade, but ever since S & W took over they are becoming very cheap in thieir stuff. Kind of sad. For instance, I was sharpening my SCHF 52 and the blade rolled. Now I can't get the thing to take an edge to fix it. Kind of irritates as I have only used it once. Any ideas? Hope you are doing well.
Looks like it could be a good cheap combo for camping, just be sure to bring your sharpening stone. I actually like the size and shape of that knife. Congrats Brian for breaking the 100K subs mark.
Thank you I have been looking at that combo for a while and I was actually thinking about getting it but it must be a sign you making this video on my birthday and that's something that I've been wanting to get
I wish I had known about the combo when I ordered the Schrade SCAXE10. I took the hatchet on a recent AT trail jaunt and throughout the weekend everyone had his or her turn using it. There were 12 of us and every one had nothing but positive things to say...except me. I did not like the knurling on the handle. It was uncomfortable to wield and produced some hot spots. On the trail I tried wrapping it with #36 twisted bank line which seemed to help. At home I re-wrapped the handle with good ole 550 and that worked like a charm. I love the SCAXE10: compactness, balance and it processes fire wood well. The sheath is rather cheesy but it works; however, I secured it shut with a ranger band It always appeared to be on the verge of popping open. I love my hickory handled axes but sometimes I just want to limit my weight and the SCAXE10 fits the bill.
Hey Brian, just curious if you had the opportunity to test the knife for splitting wood? I know it's probably a moot point with the hatchet, just curious how well the knife holds up to being beat up on. Either way, definitely a purchase I'd consider for my next camping trip!
i needed a new hatchet so i bought the combo set its a great little tool .igave the knife to my daughter to take to there cottage for brush cleaning she sayes it works good .great value
At the time of me making my previous comment the hatchet is $21 and the kit is $40 on Amazon. It makes sense at the price you mentioned but not at the time i saw this video
I would say that the combination is a great deal because you would expect to spend much more than that price just for the hatchet. I would love to have the hatchet and use it in my kit for camping out. The knife would be kept in a vehicle or at home only though since I have much better knives for camping out.
Nice review thanks for sharing. Question, why do you push your knife/tool towards your fire lay instead of holding your tool close and pulling the ferro rod away? I have found that I get a more concentrated spark by pulling the ferro rod away than pushing towards my nest or fuzz pile.
Certainly for someone just starting out, this would be a "well balanced" combo. The hatchet would be a keeper and the knife could be upgraded later but for starting out or on a budget, a definite bargain.
Another great review Bryan. Thanks for what you do. I wonder if people in China are as leary about 1095 or 5160 knife steel as Americans are about 3cr13 MoV or 7cr13/ 9crMoV knife steel? This combo pack is a great buy. You can beat on the knife and not worry about losing a lot of money, and I know the hatchet is a winner because you have used it in BS for over two years. If it did not perform you would not use it. By the way, my Buck 110 and 119 were clam packed, and they are excellent knives. Thanks again.
Thanx for the review! 2 questions: (1) How does the machete / knife compare to the Old Hickory Butcher knife? And (2) does the Old Hickory Butcher knife fit in the machete sheath?
After seeing you video, I bought this combo set. The scabbard of the knife was shi@ and tore up immediately...the knife is so large and sharp, it just cut itself outta that cloth sheath. So...I made a cardboard sheath and wrapped it with orange duct tape. After working the knife in and outta the sheath some, I coated it with some light oil, then taped it onto my orange Kubota tractor...who would have thought orange was a camo color! Ha ha. Anyway it is there to cut away at ripbrairs, blackberry canes, honeysuckle vines and those low hanging tree limbs that want to poke me in my eyes! The knife is better than a machete for those uses and easy to use! Thanks for showing me this low cost equipment!
Survival On Purpose I agree with you. Just thought the way it came out was funny. Thanks for the review, it is a good deal if you're going to get the hatchet anyway.
3cr13 is a steel I don't want to see on a folder or a small fixed blade. But on a large knife, machete or axe it's not bad. Being a low carbon steel it doesn't form a lot of carbide so a lot of that chromium goes to stain resistance and makes the steel tougher. Plus you can only reach a certain hardness on a steel like that(mid 50s hrc) and lower hardness helps with toughness. I have a few of Schrade knives in 3cr13, a Fox machete in 1.4116(same steel as Krupp 4116 cold steel uses) and another one in Nitro B and both are at about 55-57 hrc. Are they as tough as the Ontario in 5160? No, but being stainless I don't worry about them and even smacking rocks on accident does very little to them.
Can't fault that price point, Bryan; Thanks fer enduring then Dang Skeeders to bring this to us Canuck Fella's, Down On The East Coast ATB Terry God Bless
Bryan, how did the knife's blade edge hold up to the chopping? Any chipping or rolling? That wouldn't necessarily be a deal killer given the price; just curious.
A beautiful set would be great for me in Poland when I fish or camping, but I saw the price, unfortunately I could only look at this set, I do not have enough money, I do not earn enough to afford such a purchase. Great movie and great design. Regards from Poland
thanks Brian for another great vid I got to agree with you that's a great buy even if you don't need it what a nice starter gift to some one that's just getting into this crazy world of Bush crafting and I think add a mora to the mix and your really set for knives all the best to you and yours Dan in ohio
My question is what do you do with the knives that break on your test? I’m always on the look out for broken knives to recycle or use the parts to use on other knife projects.
I have mixed feelings about blister pack sets. I usually wait till they go on Clearance before I buy any of them too test. The newer ozark trail camping kit is actually decent I'm not sure I would pay 35 bucks for it but finding it on sale for 20 it was a steal. The hatchet was good and the knife was Fantastic I was shocked. The other one I picked up was a cammilus adventure set the knife was good the blade had a serrated part I did not care for. But also came with a nice entrenching tool that impressed me and at 10 bucks on Clearance hard too pass up.
"Those sneaky chineses" I laughed so hard on that.
I think that's exactly the camp hatchet I've been looking for. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. The knife is just gravy. Always look forward to Schrade Saturday! Thanks Bryan!!
+Mark Ashlock I would bet you will really like this little hatchet. I know I do

Here to speak honesty ' as always ; '. Great and informative video as is all of your videos ! Thanks for sharing Brian.
+Steve Davis thanks
@@SurvivalOnPurpose I've had what looks like that exact hatchet put out by Kershaw for about 5 years. Keep it in my hunting rucksack. Really like it!
Once again, great video. And you are right. That is a great price for a knife.
Indeed.
hatchet looked better than i would have thought , like see'n you out in the world too
+Rob Bevington The hatchet rocks in the knife was surprisingly capable
I would say that the combination is a great deal because you would expect to spend much more than that price just for the hatchet. I would love to have the hatchet and use it in my kit for camping out. The knife would be kept in a vehicle or at home only though since I have much better knives for camping out.
I agree
Nice review thanks for sharing. Question, why do you push your knife/tool towards your fire lay instead of holding your tool close and pulling the ferro rod away? I have found that I get a more concentrated spark by pulling the ferro rod away than pushing towards my nest or fuzz pile.
+Mad Painter I have tried it both ways. That just works better for me.
Thanks. I was wondering about this set
I'm glad it helped.
Currently on December 24th 2019 this set is $32.97 on Amazon
oh well, deal with it. that's awesome man way to keep doing a good job. put those couch Commandos in their place. keep up the good work
Thanks. I appreciate it.
+csh 62 I guess that clamshell packaging makes stuff harder to steal too
I am going with Gil hibhin machte since you are right about the steel that they use it is just to soft
Thanks Bryan! Nice job on your review & Nice Shirt Brother ! 👍
+Tony Navarro thanks
Thanx for the review! 2 questions: (1) How does the machete / knife compare to the Old Hickory Butcher knife? And (2) does the Old Hickory Butcher knife fit in the machete sheath?
+Lee Huynh 1) compare? Totally different. 2) I have no idea
I like this vid, not every body can afford a Gransfors.I do have a question, what happened to your Bronco project? Just querious.
+fishing unboxings and reveiws channel oh it is still there. It has absolutely no brakes at the present moment and I have not had time to fool with it
After seeing you video, I bought this combo set.
I am glad it helped.
So am I! Ha ha
How does the Schrade hand axe compare to other manufacturers?
I think it is a good one.
Dont let them troll ya bro
Looks like a great product, but my wife said NO lol blessings to you and yours 😇
+MrSIXGUNZ same to you
What watch is that? Looks pretty cool.
It's an older model of this amzn.to/2N1Irh5
Cool review. Subscribed
So how does the SCAXE 10 compare to the Estwing leather stacked hatchet? I have the Estwing and like it. Trying to justify ordering the SCAXE10 combo.
+robfromaz1977 is smaller and lighter.
"They call it a machete, I'm gonna call it a knife" Lol.
Well, I do
Survival On Purpose I agree with you.
+Terry W. Milburn at least I don't have black flies here
Looks good, thanks for sharing. Take care.
Hey Brian,
What is in your opinion, the best ferrocerium rod?
+thekc45 I could not say. I like the Schrade ones because they are on the soft side.
Bryan, how did the knife's blade edge hold up to the chopping? Any chipping or rolling? That wouldn't necessarily be a deal killer given the price; just curious.
+05generic what a little chopping I did with it did not seem to hurt it at all
A beautiful set would be great for me in Poland when I fish or camping, but I saw the price, unfortunately I could only look at this set, I do not have enough money, I do not earn enough to afford such a purchase.
Thanks Daniel
Need some shallow woods off?
My question is what do you do with the knives that break on your test? I’m always on the look out for broken knives to recycle or use the parts to use on other knife projects.
I have only had one or two break. And I no longer have those
Survival On Purpose : do you throw them away or send them back to whom sent it to you?
I think both. Whatever they want. I try not to review stuff that I think will break and then I don't intentionally try to break the knives I do test.
What's the MSRP on that bit of kit...
tonygreene113 they also have it at bass pro. Not sure of the price there
What they said
Great video Brian! It's seems like a fine knife for $1.50.
Indeed.
Took you some time with the hatchet, it should be sharpen?
Probably me
Please do a "how to" vid on attaching a Schrade type knife with belt loop to a molle bag (have the Schrade SCHF 36), thx.
Off hand I'd say use zip ties
Survival On Purpose there's got to be a better way, I think I'll check Amazon for some type of adaptor.
I tried to zip ties but they pinch the blade.
I use paracord and do a modified lashing. That holds the axe to my pack quite securely and enables me to unlash it if I need to do so.
If thats an average size knife what is a big knife then???
you amazon link shows it for $24.99 + free shipping and that's good. a good price. thx - thumbed ya up!
+Martina Dejaquiz cool
I have mixed feelings about blister pack sets. I usually wait till they go on Clearance before I buy any of them too test. The newer ozark trail camping kit is actually decent I'm not sure I would pay 35 bucks for it but finding it on sale for 20 it was a steal. The hatchet was good and the knife was Fantastic I was shocked. The other one I picked up was a cammilus adventure set the knife was good the blade had a serrated part I did not care for. But also came with a nice entrenching tool that impressed me and at 10 bucks on Clearance hard too pass up.
Does anyone know the how thick the blade is on the '' machete'' how many millimeters?
pretty thin
