SOG Camp Axe - I Admit I Like This One - Sharp Saturday

- The SOG Camp Axe is really what I would call a hatchet. It is lightweight, compact and feels good in my hand. It could stand to be a little sharper but it gets the job done. And it is fun to throw.
I found the best price at BladeHQ: shrsl.com/2js12
It is also on Amazon but at a higher price: amzn.to/34G25sl

Darn you Brian! I’ve been on a SOG binge lately and have been trying to decide if I need this. Thanks for the video.
Just picked one up for 25$ on sale. Wanted something light weight for some multi day camping hiking trips. Mine says it was made in Seattle washington
After finding a SOG Opord 39.1 liter backpack at Marshalls ($24.99) I fell in love with SOG gear...something about the skull logo wearing the beret is cool. I have the throwing version of this axe that has the pick or spike opposite to the blade edge. Of course I had to do the Bryan Stevens balance test and it passed with flying colors. Being a SOG fan (or fanatic) I added the Seal Pup fixed blade, survival shovel and a folding knife. To protect the neck part of the axe handle, I wrapped it with four layers of quality orange electrical tape. Any knicks and scrapes show up on the tape and not on the axe so far. I did the same wrap on the handle to lessen the vibrations when I use the axe for batoning small logs; does some decent feathering after using a file and puck to sharpen it. I really enjoy your Saturday morning tools videos, great with a cup of coffee.
Thanks for the review, I've been considering this one for a while now I'm sold.
Yes, China does have products with medium quality and low prices. Many things I buy are made in China.I'm getting one through your link. Thanks for the review!
I love it! I'm getting one to keep in my EDC bag!
I have one that stays in my my backpack.
sharp Saturday! thanks for the video Brian great video as alwsys.
When I saw that little axe I knew I had to go strait to the balance & rotation action🔪🆗🦘🦘🪓🪓🪓
i have a old western polished axe from the 1950's made in boulder Colorado. its about that size but one piece 1/4" steel with leather stacked handle. About that same length and weight. Good review on the sog axe :)
Nobody cares

Did he say, “AXEperts” , I’ll leave that to the experts? Sounds like it to me, funny!
Why, yes he did. ;-)
Coffee water sticks they heat coffee in 10 minutes living in woods since 2014
What?
@@slickydicky yea I love Camping free life, people leave the city for peace and QUIET, well I go into the city for a little chaos, no mabox no bills except phone and TH-cam premium
I went to the army disposal for army type water bottles . They had china and American made , i I paid the extra $4 and bought the American made and I'm down here in Australia . I won't buy chinese unless I really have to .
The weight is really nice but the 55 or so HRC sucks because you just can’t keep it sharp it enough.
I don't know. A real camp axe has a wood handle and is made in Sweden. That is purposeful, Chinese camp axes are dollar store stuff.
Says who?
Balance orientation and rotation Saturday. I wouldn’t mind getting the SOG fast hawk.
Cheap metal, won’t stay sharp.
I have a nice fiskar axe short handle makes it a bit dangerous but been chopping with it since 2014 some one stole it but brought it back
2cr13 steel equivalent to 420 steel 50 hrc after heat treating. Good for budget cutting blades. Good for the current use will take an edge but may not hold it well. But its as axe, will do the job. Good review Brian thanks.
Estwing - MADE IN USA
You nearly hit the Skunk!
Skunk? What skunk?
Not a bad Lil Worker there, Bryan ! Happy & Safe Thanksgiving To You & Yours ! ATB T God Bless
Good one to keep in the truck. Cool review man.
Doesn't have the weight. Really struggled to split wood. I wondered if it would be a good carving axe with that beard.
I have a similar vision its sog and I do enjoy it
Good video
I have one and I like it also it would be a good little asked to take on a hike with you
I dunno, Bryan. These gadgety “survival axes” are great fun, and some do work, but they are not better tools than a 60 year old Norlund hatchet or today’s Council Tool camp axe. Fun, but actually less amenable to long term maintenance. Perhaps the ideal would be a tomahawk type handle for easy field replacement, with just enough taper for a bit of splitting, and a hint of a flat back on the eye (don’t need a real hammer poll) for driving the occasional tent stake. There’s something to be said for the indestructibility of hatchets made from one flat piece of steel, but they don’t split well. Estwing may be the best compromise for a “forever axe.”
@Jon Smith not sure. House Handle comes to mind. When I found a small Nordlund with bad handle, I used a 50-60 year old handle from my late grandmother’s garage. I suggest checking out both the huge Facebook group, Axe Junkies, and the much smaller & friendlier group, Axe Addicts. The guy running Axe Addicts makes a career out of restoring old axes, hatchets, etc.
Looks like a hammer with a sharp end. Nice. I like it.
Good video. Thanks !
Well SOG seems to have found the magic proportions for a pack axe. That was quite some performance from something that small, you could belt carry that without much discomfort. Why have a hatchet AND a knife? You use the hatchet to chop wood, hammer stakes, split wood and save your knife edge for other things that need a sharp fine edge.
Hmm, maybe yours was better. I bought mine when they were about 30$. Mine does not hold an edge, the handle wobbles and the steel rusts. I really don't understand why the cheeks are indented, it causes more friction and holds debris. The collar on mine has started to deform from the movement of the handle/head. So many better options for 50$ I think.
What kind of watch are you wearing sir?
Remember the olden days when SOG had the square "SOG Specialty Knives" logo? I haven't payed much attention since then as I hate paying money to carry someone else's giant chrome billboard.
"Hey is that a SOG?"
Noooooooo
"But the entire thing is shaped like SOG... It spells out SOG."
Shudup
Also the steels they've been using rival memory foam. Going from the classic Powerlocks to the new Power Assist Advantage Tactical Whateverthehellbusyname is like going from Thor's Hammer to a soft block of lead.
I have one of those newer excuses for a Powerlock... It sits amidst cheap random tools in my odds & ends abyss... because I refuse to carry weak and poorly designed garbage. Old Powerlocks? I could drive a damn nail with those, shoot them out of a cannon, dig them outta a dirt berm, spit-shine them and they were good to go. Did not GAF.
...or like going from the jaws of life to kindergarten safety scissors. I'm still salty with SOG if it doesn't show.
COOL Video 👍
Thank U for the Info and the Links 👍
kinda like a modern tomahawk ?? !!
"Axeperts"; I subscribed!!!! Haha✌🏿 Nice video...
Thumbs up for the "axperts" pun!
Hey China makes some good, affordable products. If anyone has a problem with that, then that’s fine. They can go by some expensive axe somewhere! Great video Bryan, I liked it. You don’t know the anatomy of an axe and that’s cool. If some people want to know the specifics, then they can just go look it up on a search engine. I appreciate you sharing this and giving an honest review! And I like how you compare the price from bladeHQ and amazon. Keep making great videos on TH-cam.

@@SurvivalOnPurpose I was just watching your newest video
actually my dad just sliced his finger open
Well Bryan, another hatchet that has an incorrect edge! Why manufacturers don't put proper edges on them is beyond me! Lots of work to make the edge correct. Other than that looks tough. Thanks for the review!
Check the bear grills survival axe razor sharp perfect to handle, my wife could sling that thing right into stump within seconds I ran up grabbed axe out of stump ran back to Princess turned sling it right next to her cut amazing
Sorry Brian when you said made in China it put me off, I would never knowingly buy Chinese. If everyone was to do that then maybe our industries would start to recover. I always look for American or Western European products or even South American.
i like it
Bear grills bout 50 bucks
It's cute 😉
Hey Brian I'm watching your video on this x I didn't watch it yet I'm turning it on now I subscribed to your channel but I love the construction of it I'm going to watch your video and tell me what you think I appreciate you doing this I'm in the market for an ex 💕
Awesome thank you!
Hm, I would suggest you try a real small axe. Swedish is the only good way to go. Try Hults bruks og Gränsfors bruks. That there looks more like a toy.
made in china : ( ouch
i'm sure you can find a few just as good made in america
Estwing
Sog is garage. Get a swedish axe
I have a Wetterlings and an American made Council Tools. Both are excellent tools.
Oh... SOG is doing another thing. Meh.
SOG is not what it once was. They source many of their products from China and way overcharge for mediochre steels and treatments thereof. They used to make quality blades for a reasonable price but now even their "high end" products are lacking and not worth near what they charge. Their hatchets are not worth buying, IMO. Their throwing hawks are decent enough for what they are but the rest are not up to standard and dull and nick entirely too easily. I have off brand hatchets, and knives that cost up to half as much as a similar SOG item that out perform SOG all day long. I don't even consider SOG a brand worthy of considering, especially when there are numerous other options that are of better quality and better, or at lwast as well made and perfom just as well, usually better than SOG products. There are better places to spend your money, IMO.
