I believe this is a learned behavior and not natural instinct for several reasons. If this were natural instincts she would be doing it to get food, which she isn’t. Additionally natural instincts don’t suddenly appear at five years old and if this were a natural instinct, Raven wouldn’t have learned it from Munchkin. It’s also been mistaken for blowing bubbles or clearing her nares & I can assure you it’s not that either. These behaviors both look very different

To me it looks like they're looking to see what's at the bottom of the body of water. Like, if it was a pond they'd be full on submerging looking for stuff.

I live in England, and the local ducks (wild) who frequent a nearby canal do sometimes dip their heads underwater when edibles (not that kind) are thrown their way. Could it be that they are checking to see if they are missing anything? Regardless, Munchkin sure ♥loves ♥water!! 🤗🤗

We own ducks here in the farm and I'm pretty sure it actually is instinct. Ducks dive their heads deep in the muddy water to try and catch swimming insects or worms underneath the mud. Yes, there are insects found there, like mole crickets.

It's instinct. Even if there is no food at the bottom of the bucket, that's what ducks do in the wild, and that's enough for an explanation. Instinct is often stronger than logic. My rescue pet sparrow often takes his dust bath whenever he comes on my laptop keyboard, are there's no dust at all there 😂. It's just an instinctual species behavior.

Exactly. My mom owns eight beautiful ducks, all females, for the purpose of getting rid of pests on our small farm such as slugs and insects and even mosquitoes, and we get the bonus benefit of duck eggs each day as well for food instead of buying chicken eggs from the store. I helped raise them as well and they’re not even a year old yet but will be in a few weeks. That said, I’ve seen our ducks dive like this in our pond, so I can confirm it’s a natural behavior. It’s partially instinctive yet also in part learned behavior, they’re not quite born knowing exactly how to do it but they have the ingrained intuition to help them learn as they observe from their peers. Not to mention they are also curious and they study things with their eyes and their beaks in order to learn about the world around them.

I believe this is her looking for things at the bottom of the water. In lakes there’s usually things like plants bugs fish and other things. I think this behavior is sifting through the bottom of the mud at the bottom to find these. Maybe if you can find something you can feed her that sinks to mix into her food she can eat the feed and find her little treats at the bottom 😁

Yes, insects may hide on the bottom of small rivers or shallow lakes. And they can efficiently scan and filter through that material, spit out the rocks and eat the food, that is the insects that are hiding there or just the green plants that grow in more or less shallow water.
Ducks also can dive to find something to eat.

All ducks do this, put less water and replace with fine shredded greens, sprinkle shell grit for calcium once a week and some meal worms occasionally too. 🇦🇺👌

When I was a kid, we had ducks. They did this all the time. A man who lived near our summer home asked if we could bring him eggs, which he wanted to hatch. I raided their nests often in search of eggs & to keep up with new clutches. I was able to find almost a dozen fertilized eggs along with catching a couple of the ducklings in the week leading up to our trip.
Our ducks did well in their new home. As for the eggs, 9 of the 12 hatched. One of the man’s female ducks took over their care. It’s been some 45+ years since I brought the ducks so far from their home to their new home. The multigenerational offspring are doing well. And, they all duck their heads under water like the ones here in the video.
