Thank god for producers. As much as I love Kurt, he was his own worst enemy in many ways. Butch really polished their sound.
@@sheateeley1in utero sucked.
@@sheateeley1 I was listening to In Utero the other day and i really think Nevermind sounds way more cohesive and well produced.
@@sheateeley1 that's fun, but sometimes i think Kurt never liked anything he did just for the sake of it.
"it's pretty grungy" hahaha
hi
@@EnergeticSpark63 hi
@@laccelo hey
Impressive how he took all the little imperfections and made a masterpice also out of it.
hi
The fact In Bloom was Dave and Kurt together warms my heart in a way
And then for polly there's no percussion Kurt said sit this one out dave
@@cpesq.5884there is percussion, and the song was recorded before Dave was in the band
I love how much he appreciates the loves the music he helped craft. Love butch.
😊5 5.
Dude is a machine.
Hearing that live version of teen spirit threw me for such a big loop
That might have been the first time they played it. Certainly one of the first times.
@@eliteteamkiller319 Yep, it was the very first time Smells Like Teen Spirit was performed, at the OK Hotel in Seattle on April 17, 1991 (as confirmed by the liner notes of the With the Lights Out box set, where the performance showed up on the DVD).
I was 5 years old when Kurt died. I remember my mom cried on the couch all day. My dad stayed home from work and we all sat in front of the tv watching MTV. They played Unplugged on repeat all day.
The end of Smells Like Teen Spirit, At 19:49 when it's just the raw audio of "a denial" and at 20:09 when Butch puts the rest of the tracks back in, it sounds haunting. It's like that last note seals the fate of rock n' roll forever.
Butch is a genius. This is like Eddie Kramer with Jimi Hendrix. both genius's. They bring out the best of the true genius's the songwriters. Amazing.
32 years today. It’s fantastic to be the witness of making history
Dude ...so so grateful for this. I spent my younger years hating on Kurt and Nirvana because I'm more of a technical player. As I've aged, I've found simplicity in beauty...
They're one of my all time favorite bands now. Yet it's very challenging for me to listen to them without feeling sadness. Music is rather simple but ever extremely emotional. LOVE YOU NIRVANA AND LOVE YOU TOO BUTCH. You're a legend and so are they. R.I.P. Kurt... Almost brought to tears at this very moment.. I was a heroin addict as well. Godspeed to all the SUFFERING addicts out there.
Heroin made you like Kurt
Yeah, I think rock and metal fandoms tend to fall into the trap of equating virtuosity with value as an artist. *Nevermind* is one of my favorite albums of all time, while listening to a single song of Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, and all of those ilk is boring at best and actively grating at worst.
People forget the point of playing music is to communicate with people, to make people feel a certain way, which Cobain obviously had a great talent for. Alot of the way some folks treat performance you'd think was a sport. As if the ability to do it faster is value in itself.
@@NoTengoIdeaGueyKurt wrote everything with genius intention, and despite his technical abilities being limited he knew how to use his voice and elements of classical American/Bachian influences with an almost pop like underlying layer of simplicity. For me personally, I grew up singing before learning guitar, and Kurt’s voice is one that reaches the glass ceiling for most and completely shatters it. Singing his songs the way Kurt would you can feel every emotion and idea he was feeling when writing/performing his lyrics and melodies. There are very few men that really tap into that type of singing and do it well, Staley, Lil Peep, Will Toledo, all from completely different genres and generations but have that same vocal quality that’s almost impossible to replicate unless you are either born with it or hone it in through years of work.
@@zedystic1147 as in it made me admire him? Or made me similar to him?
@@supergilley04 I agree with a lot of that. Disagree with lil peep. Sorry, but I think he's a bit overrated. And I'm interested in the whole Kurt having influence by Bach. Very good points though man. Thanks for the input.

Thank you Butch Vig, for tricking Kurt into taking a garage album and turning it into actual Nevermind
9:58 that tone sounds so mean, I love it so much
More than 30 yrs have passed since Nevermind release. Nirvana stood the test of time big time.
Even on my phone sounds like magic
Bitch Vig was more important to the 90s rock scene than any lead singer
Butch
Not if the lead singer also wrote the songs.
That is a hell of a typo😆
Live Polly harmonies were killer
The irony of Vig's job mixing Nevermind: he did it so perfectly that Nirvana wasn't actually Nirvana, but Vig's version of Nirvana. It's ok. It's daily basis in art and literature in general. Kafka is editor's version of Kafka.
Butch Vig didn’t mix it, he engineered & produced. Andy Wallace mixed it because Kurt liked what he did with Slayer records.
Krist does not get enough credit for how signature his bads playing was. If you watch the foo fighters documentary back and forth, towards the end Krist plays the bass on the last track on the new album. Its so unique and signature. Pat Smear even talks about how important the bass sound was. Not really a fan of Nirvana, or that big of fan of FF, but that FF documentary is by far the best band documentary there is. Period.
Whats it called?
Godamn. I remember watching this doc on vh1 or mtv can’t remember but after that I fell in love with nirvana even more. Thank you for uploading this.
“John Lennon did it” kurt did loved so many big musicians before his time
I understand the record label wants to make sure not to let some rookie produce a record... but boy I'm glad.. and I bet they ended up being glad they let Butch do it in the end.
I love how at 16:28 some guy just yells freebird.
Butxh Vig is a genius!!
thank you for this, was scrubbing through the whole thing just for these parts 🤘
1:56. NIRVANA FIGHTERS
Foovana
this is pure gold
Thank you for all the great tunes.
thanks for uploading this
Holy shit dave grohl looks like the ufc fighter Dominic cruz here😂
Its wild
🥊🥊🥊This was great. Thanks.
To be clear: this is a side project for him……………To be clear: this is a side project for him
Too bad Butch didn’t keep on producing Nirvana - Kurt was self destructive so it makes sense that he fought against good choices
Doveva essere il Paul rotchild di Jim morrison
ur kidding....as if In Utero and Incesticide didnt sound fantastic...they were the sounds Kurt wanted after the mainstream Nevermind sound
@@oldben1800Incesticide wasn't an actual Nirvana "record"... It's a collection of b-sides and rarities that were recorded before anything on Nevermind witht he exception of (New Wave) Polly.
@@all_invite_0hm so?
Amazing album
Idk why but nirvanas best songs in my opinion like lounge act very ape and milk it never ever get any recognition even from fans. Those are my favorite along with Big long now another one that vanished
As a lifelong resident of Seattle, THAT period of time was so amazing for music.
Fuck man sorry to hear that.
#RIPSeattle
The "Something in the way" story sums up their relationship. Kurt was right, Butch recognised that Kurt ws right and voila, beauty!
Im glad to hear krist bass!!!!
love Butch
I love it 😊
And now I know why I could never get the guitar sound right.👍
Killer record
i wish they would release the butch vig mixes for all of nevermind
Pretty sure they’re the Devonshire mixes which appear on the “With the Lights Out” box set
Butch: "How much John Lennon do you want?"
Kurt: "Yes."
Respect from East Europe
He should be called "Daddy Rock" from all other music artists
Thanks bud.
So on Polly. Kurt does the harmony on the track, but Dave did it when they sang it live?
Yes
The version of Polly on Nevermind was recorded before Dave was a member of the band. Chad Channing is the one playing the cymbals, and as far as I’m aware Chad never did vocals for Nirvana.
Kurt was producing what he thought was edgy music all the while corporate rock moguls could smell the money and turned the whole gig into a more easily digested form on metal for the mass market consumer .
Nice
i like
1:55
2 kurts one talent
Sounds a lot like Foo Fighters😊
Would've been a completely different album without Butch that's for sure
They should’ve stuck with Butch. Nevermind production is perfect
Kurt ended up not liking how clean and polished it sounded, so he went a different direction.
There is something magical about this record. It sounded so good.
Polly is so haunted
Some people will cry Butch ruined them and went against what Kurt wanted, but thats the point of a good engineer. Thats why we have one of the greatest albums of all time now.
When was this filmed?
I don't understand how this video has so few views.
Looks like a rip, I’m sure the original probably has more
So weird to hear Dave singing in bloom
Is there a way you can also isolate parts of their songs like he does? Or is it just him having the original recordings, on his equipment?
Original recordings!
As much as i respect Butch for what he did, it is interesting for sure that Kurt decided for the next album to go with Albini, certainly because he didnt like the direction Butch went with. even though it did sound very good, it wasnt the vision Kurt necessarily had for his music.
As an example, maybe the most powerful song off of nevermind is maybe the least overproduced, Something in the Way. Though the vocal layering does do some studio voodoo to it for sure
Can't say I blame them...Albini is my favorite producer of all time...I can't tell you how many times I've heard something and loved it then later came to find out it was him.
This is reason nevermind sounds better for me than in utero. Both have great songs, in utero is rawer and nevermind more polished with double trackings.
Koko B Wares is number 1 lol
Im not sure i when through to check but... it seems ...i want the in bloom solo harmonics story back i ll watch lnclosely tomorow but...
10:04 what is that, a distortion pedal? 11:16 KILLING JOKE flanger pedal?
The bassman is a fender amp, he used mostly the DS-1 distortion Pedal on nevermind
@@JerryHodensack Thanks brother.
Small clone chorus from EHX? Talking about that modulation?
9:58
What is this from?
I believe it's from the 20th anniversary of Nevermind. Not sure who put the documentary out.
@@michaelharrington75 couldn’t be. I remember seeing this on TH-cam back in late 2008.
@@galleryofrogues Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's from the VH1 Classic Albums series. Released in 2005.
When you double tracks why not just duplicate the track?
You can do that as well, but listen to in bloom, in the chorus Dave Grohl sings in a higher harmony and see what it does to the song. When i produce i used to just duplicate it but now a days a take one main recording for vocals and one higher vocal harmony like Dave Grohl did in in bloom and one for the lower harmony, it adds something that makes the song sound bigger.
Since duplication creates an exact copy, there's no space between the two tracks where there would be by recording a new track which is what creates that big sound you hear on most rock songs. The slight variations in the two takes creates ever so slight contrast which allows your ear to pick it up. With duplication there is no variation so it's indistinguishable and doesn't catch your ear or add the punch most ppl are looking for
Two exact Duplicate copies won't give you the same chorus effect... you could slightly set one in ahead of the other byba milli second but still won't give you the same effect as two separate takes
This is a fuckin "how to" video for the cognoscenti.
Right
24:00:00
It's more or less what i think God do with our lifes
the overdub is not my favorite part in nevermind
if "Courtney Love" wasn't so fucked up back then, I am certain 'Garbage' wouldn't have existed.
What?
Is that question for "Courtney Love being fucked up" or was it for "Garbage"?!?
@@AllenJohn The whole thing lol. I’m not sure what your referring to or if anyone in this video said anything about what you’re talking about
@@starrsixx6205 Sorry for being vague. To avoid any confusion, let me try to explain my thoughts as briefly as possible.
Courtney Love is the widow of Kurt Cobain who is or was a singer of the rock band "Hole". Kurt and Love were high as kites on "designer drugs" of the 80-90s. Some say she is responsible for his successful suicide attempt. After his death, Love went into depression and drugs which ruined her and her career.
Butch Vig is the producer of Nevermind, who we see in this video. A year after the death of Kurt, Butch along with two other musicians/producers created or started a band aptly named "Garbage"; and the frontman for the band is 🤘Shirley Manson🤘 (who according a lot of people and myself) is the Goddess of Alt Rock. She is everything that Courtney Love couldn't be.
'Garbage' was an underground, main stream, live concert success. Butch produced Nevermind, but Butch's success came from Garbage. According to me, the song "Stupid Girl" is kind of like a jab at Courtney's life.
"Queer" is a good starting point to experience the sonic quality of "Garbage".
Donald trump got his favorite, famous word "HUGE" from Butch Vig.
I don't like how is that album mixed, it's soft and weird and brutally commercial. this was a clear attempt to sell the record to the teenage girls with few songs or tracks that were kept relatively normal. there are several voice and guitar overdubs for everything and the sound is completely distant from the band's real sound and personality. 'drain you' is the apex of that absurdity. I am also pretty sure they'd be using auto-tune nowadays for most songs and it would be shite. a good live version of most of the songs on that album is far better than the album itselft.
You are so different omg heres a medal for being different
There's truth in what you say. I still like it like this though.
Because like it or not, Kurt cobain wanted to be in the biggest band in the world. Butch made that happen.
@@elliot.nilssonKurt actually hated the record. He stated it on several occasions.Even Butch said he sometimes lied to get the sound he wanted not the sound Kurt wanted. Its still a great album it's catchy short melodic songs for the radio. But if this album wasn't made the way it was Nirvana would've made it into households and most likely never of got in utero and unplugged 2 of the greatest albums in history and ones live .
Butch Vig didn’t mix the album, Andy Wallace did. Vig’s mixes are featured on the super deluxe 20th anniversary reissue of Nevermind and it sounds a lot more indie without most of that “brutally commercial” flair you speak of.
