I was 5 years old when Kurt died. I remember my mom cried on the couch all day. My dad stayed home from work and we all sat in front of the tv watching MTV. They played Unplugged on repeat all day.
Idk why but nirvanas best songs in my opinion like lounge act very ape and milk it never ever get any recognition even from fans.Those are my favorite along with Big long now another one that vanished
Kurt was producing what he thought was edgy music all the while corporate rock moguls could smell the money and turned the whole gig into a more easily digested form on metal for the mass market consumer .
Some people will cry Butch ruined them and went against what Kurt wanted, but thats the point of a good engineer. Thats why we have one of the greatest albums of all time now.
And now I know why I could never get the guitar sound right.👍
Thank you Butch Vig, for tricking Kurt into taking a garage album and turning it into actual Nevermind
The "Something in the way" story sums up their relationship. Kurt was right, Butch recognised that Kurt ws right and voila, beauty!

When you double tracks why not just duplicate the track?
You can do that as well, but listen to in bloom, in the chorus Dave Grohl sings in a higher harmony and see what it does to the song. When i produce i used to just duplicate it but now a days a take one main recording for vocals and one higher vocal harmony like Dave Grohl did in in bloom and one for the lower harmony, it adds something that makes the song sound bigger.
Since duplication creates an exact copy, there's no space between the two tracks where there would be by recording a new track which is what creates that big sound you hear on most rock songs. The slight variations in the two takes creates ever so slight contrast which allows your ear to pick it up. With duplication there is no variation so it's indistinguishable and doesn't catch your ear or add the punch most ppl are looking for
Two exact Duplicate copies won't give you the same chorus effect... you could slightly set one in ahead of the other byba milli second but still won't give you the same effect as two separate takes

This is reason nevermind sounds better for me than in utero. Both have great songs, in utero is rawer and nevermind more polished with double trackings.
Thank god for producers. As much as I love Kurt, he was his own worst enemy in many ways. Butch really polished their sound.

Dude ...so so grateful for this. I spent my younger years hating on Kurt and Nirvana because I'm more of a technical player. As I've aged, I've found simplicity in beauty... They're one of my all time favorite bands now. Yet it's very challenging for me to listen to them without feeling sadness. Music is rather simple but ever extremely emotional. LOVE YOU NIRVANA AND LOVE YOU TOO BUTCH. You're a legend and so are they. R.I.P. Kurt... Almost brought to tears at this very moment.. I was a heroin addict as well. Godspeed to all the SUFFERING addicts out there.

Yeah, I think rock and metal fandoms tend to fall into the trap of equating virtuosity with value as an artist. *Nevermind* is one of my favorite albums of all time, while listening to a single song of Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, and all of those ilk is boring at best and actively grating at worst. People forget the point of playing music is to communicate with people, to make people feel a certain way, which Cobain obviously had a great talent for. Alot of the way some folks treat performance you'd think was a sport. As if the ability to do it faster is value in itself.
@@NoTengoIdeaGueyKurt wrote everything with genius intention, and despite his technical abilities being limited he knew how to use his voice and elements of classical American/Bachian influences with an almost pop like underlying layer of simplicity. For me personally, I grew up singing before learning guitar, and Kurt’s voice is one that reaches the glass ceiling for most and completely shatters it. Singing his songs the way Kurt would you can feel every emotion and idea he was feeling when writing/performing his lyrics and melodies. There are very few men that really tap into that type of singing and do it well, Staley, Lil Peep, Will Toledo, all from completely different genres and generations but have that same vocal quality that’s almost impossible to replicate unless you are either born with it or hone it in through years of work.

@@supergilley04 I agree with a lot of that. Disagree with lil peep. Sorry, but I think he's a bit overrated. And I'm interested in the whole Kurt having influence by Bach. Very good points though man. Thanks for the input.

As much as i respect Butch for what he did, it is interesting for sure that Kurt decided for the next album to go with Albini, certainly because he didnt like the direction Butch went with. even though it did sound very good, it wasnt the vision Kurt necessarily had for his music. As an example, maybe the most powerful song off of nevermind is maybe the least overproduced, Something in the Way. Though the vocal layering does do some studio voodoo to it for sure
Can't say I blame them...Albini is my favorite producer of all time...I can't tell you how many times I've heard something and loved it then later came to find out it was him.

The irony of Vig's job mixing Nevermind: he did it so perfectly that Nirvana wasn't actually Nirvana, but Vig's version of Nirvana. It's ok. It's daily basis in art and literature in general. Kafka is editor's version of Kafka.
Butch Vig didn’t mix it, he engineered & produced. Andy Wallace mixed it because Kurt liked what he did with Slayer records.
Krist does not get enough credit for how signature his bads playing was. If you watch the foo fighters documentary back and forth, towards the end Krist plays the bass on the last track on the new album. Its so unique and signature. Pat Smear even talks about how important the bass sound was. Not really a fan of Nirvana, or that big of fan of FF, but that FF documentary is by far the best band documentary there is. Period.

I don't like how is that album mixed, it's soft and weird and brutally commercial. this was a clear attempt to sell the record to the teenage girls with few songs or tracks that were kept relatively normal. there are several voice and guitar overdubs for everything and the sound is completely distant from the band's real sound and personality. 'drain you' is the apex of that absurdity. I am also pretty sure they'd be using auto-tune nowadays for most songs and it would be shite. a good live version of most of the songs on that album is far better than the album itselft.

Because like it or not, Kurt cobain wanted to be in the biggest band in the world. Butch made that happen.
@@elliot.nilssonKurt actually hated the record.He stated it on several occasions.Even Butch said he sometimes lied to get the sound he wanted not the sound Kurt wanted.Its still a great album it's catchy short melodic songs for the radio.But if this album wasn't made the way it was Nirvana would've made it into households and most likely never of got in utero and unplugged 2 of the greatest albums in history and ones live .
Butch Vig didn’t mix the album, Andy Wallace did. Vig’s mixes are featured on the super deluxe 20th anniversary reissue of Nevermind and it sounds a lot more indie without most of that “brutally commercial” flair you speak of.
They should’ve stuck with Butch. Nevermind production is perfect
Kurt ended up not liking how clean and polished it sounded, so he went a different direction.
There is something magical about this record. It sounded so good.
