The pedal harpsichord was the customary home practice instrument for organists during Bach's lifetime. One of the primary reasons for this was that they had to pay an assistant to pump the bellows to supply the air needed to make the organ pipes sound. This problem continued until the advent of blowers powered, first by water or steam, and then by electricity, in the early 1920's.
I think the temperature inside a church in winter would be another good reason for the use of this instrument at home. There used to be two excellent LPs of Lionel Rogg -one Bach, one Buxtehude - on the BACH label. I can't understand why the pedal harpsichord isn't more widely known.
@@daigreatcoat44E. Power Biggs did two albums on a pedal harpsichord: one with the d minor toccata and fugue on one side; the passacaglia and fugue one the other side. The second album was Scott Joplin ragtime.

Flying fingers, dancing feet, bring us heavenly sounds 🎹🎶❤ Thanks for playing and sharing this wonderful music. Best wishes for your continued success ☮
It sounds almost as if composed for the pedal harpsichord. Undoubtedly Bach himself must have practiced this composition on a pedal harpsichord before playing it on the organ, since back in the day you had to have people pumping the bellows on an organ (unless it was one of the ones with very lucky situation to have water power to convert to internal wind power).
Bach's keyboard music is mostly composed "for clavier", meaning for any keyboard instrument, be it harpsichord, lautenweck, clavichord, organ. So if it is not specified, it fits to anything. However, the Clavier-Übung series are assigned for specific instuments: Clavier-Übung I, the six partitas BWV 825-830 are for harpsichord; the Clavier-Übung II, the Italian Concerto, BWV 971 and the Overture in the French style, BWV 831 is for the harpsichord with two manuals; the monumental Clavier-Übung III - e.g. the German organ mass contains the Prelude and Fugue in E flat major, BWV 552, 21 chorale preludes, BWV 669-689, and the Four Duets, BWV 802-805 - for organ, obviously; and the Clavier-Übung IV are the famous Goldberg Variations, for harpsichord with two manuals.
There are those who think Bach composed the Eight Little Preludes and Fugues for such an instrument, due to the frequent non-organistic writing in them. Admittedly there are many who don’t think Bach composed them at all but rather they were composed by one of his pupils or perhaps some unrelated composer.
Wow, I wish I had come across this instrument sooner, I love it! Two harpsichords stacked on each other and an organ pedalboard attached to one... And of course, the perfect instrument for Bach, a master of organ.
Greetings and congratulations. But what do my eyes see? a banana taped to the wall or maybe a 5.200.000euros masterpiece by Maurizio Cattelan? :) On the other hand, wonderful interpretation of BWV 543 by the genius of Leipzig J.S. Bach, the greatest musician and numerologist ever known.
