GGC - 69 - Attempting to Build and Use a Cheap Homemade Leaf Bagger (For Garden Mulch)

  • We've got a lot of leaves, so why not collect them for mulch in our vegetable gardens. But leaf baggers are expensive, so I decided to try to build one. Follow me through my thought-process and trial and error, while I attempt to collect leaves on the cheap.

    great ideas!!! I suspect the twigs are your clogging problem. I use a blower to herd our leaves down to the garden. You'll need a gas blower, but as dry as we are, it's a very quick process.

    I have the same John Deere (D series) and I got the bagger system when I bought it...The dealer said the bagger system comes with a different set of blades they needed to install to use with it called lift and cut blades...They also gave me the factory set that I tried a few years later when the other blades dulled and they were drastically different...The lift and cut set creates a vacuum that pushes the debris through the pipe much harder than the standard blades...Also the lawn bag breathes much more than a tarp would...Finally you'd lose lots of suction with that duct taped pipe.....It was entertaining though so Thanks!

    Great ideas and a lot of thought. Have you considered cutting your losses and just buying the part of the OEM bagger that fits the deck properly? Then you will have the proper curvature and "lift"? I have a craftsman, and I own the bagger but I searched for the elbow piece and it costs about $40. Not terrible if you plan on using it year after year. I think part of the problem you have with clogging is that bagger's always bring the leaves/grass higher than the bagging system. Having the tube so low without good pressure due to the tarp being torn in several placed will clog. Another flaw is that you will have a very large turn diameter with the bag way off to the side. Buy the elbow from Deer, and make shift a rear bagger that discharges in the center behind you seat at the seat level and you will be fine.

    Yah, I got the right bagger setup and it does the same think. I even made better blades to get more push through the tube and didn't help on the wet stuff. That's the problem, the wet stuff is just too heavy. My setup worked great on the dry stuff. My modified blades worked soo good that they actually vacuumed the ground. I made vids of the blades being modified. You going to revisit this, this year?

  • @amejaremy
    @amejaremy 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have learned that leaves only work as mulch fertilizer if they have been really chopped up well otherwise they will not break down fast enough to be useful. I use a hand held back pack type and on a fairly big yard you can suck up a lot of leaves without having to dump frequently.

    Thanks for trying. Did you ever get a design that works? Perhaps take a mulch cover/plug, cut a hole in it and attach your piping. I'd use 8 inch slick wall PVC and elbow it at the chute off the mulch cover, then you are home free to attach to any collection container. If 8 inches is too wide for the mulch cover, you can use a 6 inch elbow that adapts to 8 inch and run that the rest of the way to your bag.

    I use high lift blades. They really give a lot of volume over regular lift blades. Blades from the factory are only good enough to throw clippings out the side of machine. Oregon makes good after market products.

  • @zachlloyd9392

    Haha, love the idea, but I wonder how many leaves you could have got with a rake and that pull behind on your mower if you had spent the day and a half or two you spent creating on just raking?
    Not being critical, I do the same crap because it's fun!

    If you were to open up two of the tubes, and Instead of connecting back to the other side, connect to the corresponding crimp on the other tube, you could double the circumference of your tube. I also noted the handyman’s favorite tool.

    I love the channel! Big fan of the back to nature methods, I try to utilize as many of them as possible myself. So, I have been involved in landscaping for a while. I have been doing large scale fall cleanups to use for mulch/winter compost for my garden for a while. I have one suggestion, which could help your system here to work with less clogs. If you mow over your leaves first, without a bagger, you can grind them up and create smaller material. After that, attach your bagger and go back over what you have chopped up. This should minimize clogging in your pipes and allow you to fit more material in your bags, for less dumping. Also, try to do this when it is as dry as possible. Happy gardening! Best of luck!

    Leaves are best for flower beds and good for gardens, however, they leave the soil more acidic. you will have to add granular lime each year. Lime is cheap. Keep looking at estate sales, craigslist, auctions etc. I have a DR leaf machine. It has a vacuum which sucks into a bin. very good.

    I don't use my bagger when things are wet. Even when mowing the lawn I will mow without the bagger and let the grass dry for a day or two then come back and bag it all quickly. This eliminated my clogging issues entirely.

    More of a wet leaf problem to me. I wouldn't purchase the entire leaf system, but I would try to find the part that attaches to the opening where the leaves first come out, and start with that, then you should be able to attach anything you want to it, and it should work fine after that. Wet leaves stick to everything, so using the original connection piece should help. I know your using hay for your garden and you may not even be considering this anymore, however you never know when you may need to pick up TONS OF GARDEN SCRAPS, and this may come in handy for mulching garden scraps to go back into your raised beds. Bless, Sheila

    • @BackToReality
      @BackToReality  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is EXACTLY what I'm thinking too, at this point. I've looked into purchasing just the part that attaches to the mower deck. It's still pricey, but totally worth it, if I can make it work. We'll be sure to post another video (likely sometime this summer) once we continue with this experiment :)

  • @sailingsolar
    @sailingsolar 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Your problem wasn't 6" isn't big enough. It didn't clog up in the pipe until AFTER you put that bag on it. That means what's after the 6 " is creating to much back pressure, which in turn slows the air flow inside the pipe. Not the diameter or the bends you took out. You need to extend that wagon's floor space back some more to give you more sq. ft. of floor. Throw some hoops on it. Maybe some ten ft saplings, like a covered wagon. Then cover hoops over with your tarp. Have some screen or chicken wire on the back wall. What do you think. For free you could weave with small branches a back door and the air would still go through but the leaves won't. Like a fish trap, traps fish. You got this next fall. I'll be looking to see if you use my suggestions or come up with something different. Cheers Derrick.

    You have a huge forest, if you need more leaves just bag not only the trail, bag 10-15ft outside the trail. Nice looking trail, if you bagged extra leaves on each side of the trail it would look even more professionally maintained, as well you get plenty of leaves. Just go thru and use a sickle or an axe on the tiny bushes and tiny trees within 10-15 ft of the trail, then it can be mowed and bagged. It would look better than the public park systems. lol

    Your air flow is part of your problem.
    Cover the holes in the middle of the tube, but leave small (3-4 inch) holes at the very end of the tube.
    Get a 'mulching' blade to make the pieces of leaves smaller.
    In my YARD, I run over the leaves with a mulching blade 3-4 times (side discharge) then pick up the smaller pieces with my bagger.
    That way I can put 4-5 times as many leaves in my bagger.
