@@peskymacaw9033 A lot of people... like, a lot of people. But to be fair, Portra 400 is an excellent starter film, if a bit expensive. But it has massive exposure latitude and is very forgiving of lighting conditions. There's a reason Portra 400 is called the "Auto Mode" of the film world. It is an easy film to learn.

@@GregoryVeizades Who's "a lot of people"? I follow several youtube channels dedicated to film and I've never heard anyone recommending Portra for begginers. And I never said that Portra is a bad film, but it isn't for starting, sure you can start with if you want, it but is far from optimal, is a professional film. Besides, is a film thought for protraits (landscapes, street photograpgy, wildlife photo.. etc they all look a bit off wit Portra), so it reduces it uses further more for a begginer. If you are starting or just for a casual shoting and want a bit of flexibility with the light just go for an Ultramax, Fuji Venus or something like that.

I agree -- when these consumer films dry up, that will have a detrimental impact on the easy access to just try out film. I am film lover from way back when that was all that there was -- but it's nice to encourage my daughters to put aside their smart phones and DSLRs, and throw a decent point-and-shoot at them with a roll of film and have them mess around. But yeah -- if the only film available is "pro" and costs $10+ a roll, and is harder to find -- "youngsters" who just want to see what all the fuss over film is about, will think twice about messing around. I prefer ColorPlus 200 over Gold 200, though I like them both. I often find them at almost the same price -- and I'll grab either to use for testing out my way-too-large camera collection! I do wish that there were 120 versions of these films though -- I love Ektar 100, but it almost seems a waste to use that film in an old box camera, or a fixed-focus folder, or a pseudo-TLR camera where the camera is just not going to produce a super-sharp image. The more "family vacation" colors of ColorPlus and Gold (and to a lesser extent, UltraMax) would be the perfect match for these cameras that were the "point-and-shoots" of their day -- Stay Safe Noah!!!!

Something that I have learned recently is that Vision3 250D is almost identical to Portra 400. If you are willing to give C-41 a try at home (or are willing to send it to a dedicated ECN lab), you can get a great deal! $100 for 20 rolls of Portra? Yes please. That is a consumer price point for a pro film!
Now, some people might not want to go this route, thinking it is expensive, but I will just say, if you are willing to pay to start bulk loading/developing film at home, you will save money.
Another thing that scares people is the dreaded RemJet. It isn’t that difficult to deal with, just put baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) in the water pre-bath, then rinse the film until the water is clear.
And finally, the only real difference between ECN and C-41, is the rem-jet removal. There are slight chemistry differences, but it is almost exactly the same proses. If you want to proses your film in ECN chemistry, go ahead! But most of the comparisons online I have found show minimal differences.
I have just started doing this proses, and can’t wait to see the results I get, but I am going to wait until all 20 rolls I loaded have been shot before developing them, so it is going to be a surprise.

Shutter cocked indicator, was Pentax the only one to have this essential feature? Any film camera without it is a deal breaker. You have to try Kodak Proimage 100 next. People said it's like a mix of Portra and Ektar.

Classically Fuji's stuff had a cool cast with beautiful blues. I'm wondering if this happened with the prints we made and the negatives had these odd casts.

The colours in colour films really depend on the scanning... do you have a way to be sure you are getting the proper colour and white balance from the scan?

Gold and (more so) UltraMax are my go to films. I've tried Superia and C200 but the greens in the film are just too disgusting to me. Because of this, I'm afraid to try Velvia, Provia, and Pro400H.

Around the time that Kodak Gold first came out, Kodak color film stopped being inherently raciest. Yes, that was a thing and an interesting story to look up. For decades Kodak didn't calibrate their film to accurately reproduce darker skin tones. Businesses using Kodak film to take pictures to advertise their chocolate or wooden furniture weren't happy with Kodak either.

In my opinion, the Gold 200 blows the UltraMax 400 and the Color Plus 200 out of the water.

People just starting out with film should bear in mind that although a point-and-shoot camera is great for early learning, it will probably be a very short time before you will want at least a bridge camera, which is like an SLR in many ways but features a fixed lens. Bridge cameras are cheaper than SLRs but they allow you to use filters, and if you’re like me when I was a kid in the 1970s just learning photography, the very moment you notice what a yellow filter can do for black-and-white film on a sunny day, or what a polarizing filter can do for color film on a sunny day, you will not be satisfied with the limitations of a point-and-shoot.

if people keep buying film,it's not going to die.But in future, something must change.
1.The film technology must change, however it looks like that the case won't happen since all development is focusing on digital sensor.
2.The film case should be made by something cheaper like cellulose for economic.
