This is one of the biggest topics talked about on a lot of the 400ex pages. Cheap parts or wiesco cosmic builds . Can't wait to see how it turns out! Awesome
I had a niche cylinder bored to 426 and ran almost 30 degrees hotter then factory cylinder so I had my factory cylinder resleeved, the cooling dins are thinner on cheaper cylenders
You don't need the decompression valve and spring to run the bike, it just helps the starter for cranking. They recommend removing it when you upgrade the cam to hotcams
if you have the oem cam with the mecanism on it you need the pin and spring if not it never start ... rebuild mine few yars ago and forgot to put the pin and spring back and was not runing at all ... i put them back in and it start right up ! i guess if you delet the mecanism from the cam or go with hotcams you can run it without the pin and spring
I know you ay not reply/see/aknowlwedge my comment (But if you do) from my experince those cheap cylinder/Piston kits on those 400ex's are notorious for the bottom of the Cylinder Breaking and Shattering. So just be aware if you ever hear a loud "valve Tapping" sound it's the bottom of the Cylinder most likley shatterd and is now banging around in the bottom end of the engine. I had it happen to me and worked on many bikes that it happened to as well.
i put a niche kit piston and ring into a honda XR 70R i was not expecting something super great but for the price i try it anyway ... and after a years of riding it pretty hard it still holding up great !
Use A shop rag folded over doubled up around the stud.& Use vise grips to loosen that stuck bolt bite on to it. then heat up the area again use the vise grips to slowly turn down while keeping the heat to the area.
Man I'd love to find a basket case like that to take home something I can afford and spend a little at a time and put it back together. Currently working on a 86 trx 200sx got it running and riding beautifully have more to do all the plastic has been destroyed and that stuff is high dollar still cheaper than a new one that you can't afford or a practically new used one . Hay but I'm enjoying what I am doing saving one from the scrap pile and now I have something to ride and enjoy for cheap the poor boy way like I said the plastic is going to be the biggest expense but I can put a little back at a time for it
I could not tear things all the way down like this and not at least clean everything. I would also paint some stuff but that's just me. It's my opinion that if you're going to do something do it right and make it better than you found it
Joe, with the wrist-pin length, sounds like something you need to bring to the Niche manufacturer's attention, sounds like the QC department took a day off at the plant. lol
Ugh I still have my old 01 400ex sitting in the garage. With the top end off. I need to figure out how to get it running again. Had a 440 kit in it with a performance cam. The head gasket was leaking. I could feel it on my leg. It would still run unless you gave it gas to quick at a stop.
Sounds like the head wasn’t torqued down all the way, had that happen to me on an old XR80R, tightened the head nuts and it ran perfect. That’s assuming the head gasket you have is undamaged however
Hey, I have a 01. It runs perfect until it gets hot then it just shuts off you wait about 5 minutes the it runs perfect again until it shuts back off. Could it be the coil?
I’m quite sure Mr Honda as they are now goes around the world to make parts as do all car and motorcycle manufactures, Your just finding the suppliers direct
I've had good luck so far with Marvel Mystery Oil when others like PB Blaster or WD40 couldn't get the job done. You should pick up a small bottle and give it a try yourself from Walmart or Amazon. I am wondering if you moved your chain tension bolts back in before cutting the chain because you did not show that nor mention it? If not, you should have so you have the ability to use that chain longer as it stretches out before having to replace it.
Yesterday, I put a niche piston in a 300ex, and I placed the in towards the exhaust because that's the front of the 4 wheeler. I was late finding this video. I set the rings up like the in was facing the exhaust. Will it be alright? Both sides look the same.
@2vintage I have the exact same Quad and year and using the same brand of parts. But my issue is my tranny. When I have it all to together the shift drum is lose and the shift forks and trans gears are locked tight. 🤯🤯🤯
Not bad looking parts joe to be honest think it will work out just fine as you say give it a check after few months to see how things are will depend on how hard it gets ridden I would think for them to fail that’s if they do will be interesting for sure to see how they hold up great video mate take care until the next video 🔧🔧🔧👍👌
If you need any bottom end parts in the future hit me up I have everything but the transmission starter and sproket cover only parting it out to pay off my built 440 motor
I have one of those cheap kits on my Polaris 400. When I got the kit everything was packed really nice except the piston was just thrown in there at the end with no box no wrapping no paper just bouncing around
The reason the metal shavings I believe is the torque from the engine pulled hard and slightly bent a shaft on the inner sprocket of the motor causing the chain to grind upon the sprocket teeth causing them to shave metal and bind the chain up. My opinion
I bought a boyson clutch cover for my 98 kx250 and when i installed it it had .15 thousandth gaps in between the bolt holes wth has this happened to anyone here 😮
Man don't use K&N spray filter oil. It's made for paper elements. For foam use something like Maxima, PJ1 or unifilter oil. Much better for a foam filter.
You have to figure that most people don't have the patience or the knowledge that you do so they give up kind of like the guy in the comment section who still has his top end off for who knows how long,,, so then they just sell it cuz they lose interest half the time you fix it with something stupid and simple...
Dude clean out the crankcase and head area, its a engine and needs to be clean ......the next kid who owns these builds doesn't need to be worrying about a engine full of dirt and grim!
The Niche kits are usually pretty good! Use them a lot. Looks good.

Love it! So relaxing watching you work on these bikes!
21:20 A Lisle impact driver is your best friend. Be careful of reusing head studs also. Lock-tite red the the new studs in and let them set overnight.
If you buy a aftermarket cam you don't need the spring and pluner for the cam cause it eliminates the decompression
Tip , take that old cylinder that's giving a hard time with that stud and put it in your oven at 450 for about 40 minutes
Young man you need a motorcycle/quad lift sponsor. Keep up the great content. 👍
he does and deserves one kid is amazing !
I used a pipe wrench to take the studs with it in the quad,I got the niche 440 kit and had to fix the ring gaps on almost every ring
If you can find them. The front shocks off a trx 450r will bolt right on the 400 and is a major improvement.
Bro I’m a huge fan!!!! I bought a 1989 Suzuki lt250r Quadracer just because I watched your videos of yours lmaooo had to have one!

Those gaskets do well, just torque the bolts tight.
I have that pipe, it's oversized piping it's wicked loud lol it's a top end pipe
Spacely Space Sprockets!! Joe only uses the best...

Wanna sell it
@@gagecain9585 No. I’ll put it back together with a new head gasket eventually
Next time heat up the sides of the cylinder around the stud. Works much better than just the top where it screws into the jug
Nice video, highly reccommend putting a little anti seize on those studs
Oh OK I just seen you use a ratchet wrench🔧 They are really handy to have
Shoot air behind your grips when installing/removing them… like butter.
Very cool, cannot wait to see how it holds up👍
“Looks like a mouse nest in there”

Joe get a map gas torch, they heat better. That stud probably woulda come right out with one of those.
I think ide done a full tear down and clean and inspect...after being tore down for that long it got a Lotta junk in there.....
Those cylinder studs are supposed to be set at a certain height after threaded in.

It has to be in neutral when you put the bottom end cases together or it will not be right, or something is binding internally
@@myguitaryourface5160 yes and that's is what I'm just now noticing is that it is binding up and don't know why

great video man
That rear wheel hub looks homemade

Try getting yourself some map gas the yellow container you're using propane the map gas is much hotter
I put in a cheap kit on my 2001 400ex a few months ago and it's still going strong.
looking great! love learning new things from your videos thankyou joe :)
get a lift from harbor frieght thier cheap n work great
Use Red loctite on Head stud's into cylinder
You always say “We” got this or that is there somebody there we don’t see ? 😂 Keep making good content
I see you used a clip type master link on the chain. I use those on my bikes up to 750cc. Any thoughts on clip vs rivet type?
I've never had a problem with the clip type chains
Amazing joe
I am just curious do you own a set of ratchet wrenches if not you should get a set they are awesome
Is that the 440 kit are stock
I have one of those cheap kits on my Polaris 400.
When I got the kit everything was packed really nice except the piston was just thrown in there at the end with no box no wrapping no paper just bouncing around
I wonder how this kit is still holding up?
How the hell is everything so cheap. I'm in Canada, and those prices are unheard of LOL
I could be wrong but isn't there supposed to be a timing chain guide on the right hand side just above the oil pump
When the cylinder is installed the guide on the right goes in
That caltric timing chain is a bad idea, it won't last a season of moderate ripn!
Is that the right way to measure ring gap😮
swap a cub 90 engine to Z50, I swapped a ct70 to mine,
You should really replace all the head studs they’re most likely stretched and need replacing
Amazing content.
33:56....clean it off!!! hahaha sorry I'm a clean freak
so where do you think all those metal chunks came from on the screen?
Use some anti sieze on your bolts?
The filteroil cost more than the airfilter 🤣
You going to be doing anymore street bikes?
So what scored the cylinder??
Most of those cheap Chinese parts are fine except the timing chain. I've seen those stretch in 15 minutes of run time.
i really like your videos but why you never wash your bikes, at least degreaser and power wash?
are you selling any of your bikes? looking for 2 strokes?
you gotta get a Honda 700xx
What happened to your 1989 Suzuki RM 250?
Love it ❤
I thought you weren't supposed to turn on a bolt right after you heat it
You didnt post links to anything?
Hopefully that decompression spring didn't fall into the bottom end
Hopefully not!
Can't wait... only 4 more sleeps until the mower man's out.. lol lol... great video...🤙👍🤘
I understand building on a budget , but buying the cheapest parts isn't always a smart choice , cheap parts break easier !!!
It's for testing purposes only. Going to see how long they last.
@@2vintage I understand that
Take axle forward first.
Well hope it runs on the next video.
love the vids but why not clean the things your working on like the top end
I've got an 01 400ex and it is leaking oil into the airbox from the carb anybody know why?
Noticed no small end bearing 🤔
I think Honda built that four wheeler.
Why would someone tear it down that much?
Yeah no idea. Mist have had lower compression or didn't start
The reason the metal shavings I believe is the torque from the engine pulled hard and slightly bent a shaft on the inner sprocket of the motor causing the chain to grind upon the sprocket teeth causing them to shave metal and bind the chain up. My opinion

I would have cleaned every inch of the engine and rear frame before putting new parts on it
People that usually sell them that way get way over their head tearing them apart, So they probably got that far and did not know what they got into
They buy a bunch of parts, then give up due to lack of experience. Then they don't want to spend the money at a shop to rebuild.
I wanna meet you someday forsure!
