    I don't understand why you don't say that LOVE, is the first and
    primary reason why you went to the Philippines??? That is the
    "major" reason why Expats go there. Living in the western world,
    you realize soon that once you hit 45+ , your chances of finding a
    young, slim woman are slim to none. Most are divorced, overweight,
    with 1-2 kids, and also come with the "new feminist attitudes" that a
    lot of guys are just fed up with. LOVE- and friendly people are really
    lacking here in North America. I think you'll see huge amounts of baby
    boomers who are now about 45-60 yrs old, going there to find love and
    a new purpose in life. My situation is much like the sentiment you expressed
    so well in your video here Ned. You can't be happy just with nice houses
    and fancy cars--after you've had them, their no big deal anymore, and you
    want some real meaning and purpose in your life--be it a nice woman, or
    starting a family, which is available there in the Phils-- and not in North America.
    It's really a chance at a second life in a way--and guys are throwing all the
    money, career aside, and going there looking for real meaning in life.
    I'll say a very good, down to earth video Ned, and you covered a lot of
    very good informative information on the Phils here. I enjoyed it very much,
    but I do think--"it's the availability of women that is the # 1 driving force" for
    all the Expats going there, and you should be very upfront on this issue, as
    it's the reason why your there, and so many others like you as well. North
    America is a good place to make money-- but it can't buy you happiness.
    Look forward to more good videos from you--saw yours off Henry's site.
    regards-Grant ( in Canada)
    I'll likely be going there myself!!!!

      Grant Bedard Actually, I am not here for the women - I just needed something new and different from what I had. An adventure, if you will. And you are right - a lot of guys are here for that, but again, that wasn't my personal reason. It's just icing on the rather yummy cake that is the Philippines.

    • @grantbedard9859
      @grantbedard9859 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Philippine Dreams - I guess everyone's reasons are different, some
      for warm weather, others for low cost to live etc. Good luck with your
      adventure Ned--your very similar to Henry out in the Phils. Be interesting
      to meet you guys there.

      I agree with you 100% Problem with him saying anything else other than women is that I don't see any other reason as to why white women don't move to the country for the climate or cheap costs etc. Instead there's just an influx of old white men moving into the country

    • @PhilippineDreams
      @PhilippineDreams  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      John Primrose I see lots of "white women" every day here in Dumaguete - students, wives, retirees, young women working remotely, etc. etc. There are a large amount of "old white men" who have moved to the country and started families, and yeah, I think they would be the majority of foreigners in the country. But I also know a LOT of young foreigners who are here working remotely and taking advantage of working for USD/Euros and spending Pesos. I think it's peoples perception that the RP is a haven for old sexpats, which isn't actually the case.

    • @jon2270
      @jon2270 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Philippine Dreams At least we agree that the majority of foreigners in the Philippines are old white men and that's what I was trying to get at. Of course there would be white women and other young foreigners in the country but they are the minority and I've never doubted that. But if the Philippines' climate is so good and cheap cost of living why do we not see an equal amount of male and female foreigners in the country? What? Don't female foreigners not want all those things? Instead, its like I said, just droves of old white men moving to the country.
      To me what Grant Bedard said is true. Females can pretty much get a partner anywhere they live but for older males in the west its going to be a lot harder. And asian women are the ones more open to dating old white men because of the fact they are white and we still have that racial inferiority mentality in the Philippines and would want to see our children marry into white families despite anything else (age) as oppose to black people for example.

    A few subscribers were asking why I decided to move to the Philippines. In this video, I try to lay out the top 10 (11!) reasons why.

      +jack c There's a lot of roosters here. And barking dogs. They don't bother me, but maybe I am just lucky. They do seem to bother some people. My only beef with the Philippines is the unrelenting heat on sunny days in urban areas. Then again, we have a metal roof, no shade and concrete walls. Well, at least we don't need an oven.

    • @roseliopalma9710
      @roseliopalma9710 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Philippine Dreams The hot summer season normally start in the months of March through May then June start the wet season. During the hot season months night time is very uncomfortable because of the heat. Living in a metal roof and concrete walls are terribles because concrete absorbs suns heat during the day and release the heat at night. Metal roofing also acts like an oven and stores heat in the attic and radiates heat inside the attic at all times. Proper ventilation of the the attic would help ease the storing of heat trapped in the attic like installing a vent fan with thermostat control set at a desired temperature to activate the vent fan and automatically shut of when temperature cools down. There are solar power roof ventilators you could install if they are locally available.

    I spent some time in PI, in my youth. I've always dreamed about going back. Now, that I'm retired, (Military and police), I can afford to easily live there. I'm 46 now, haven't been over for 25+ years! I keep dreaming of a small Island in the Leyte Gulf where I stayed for months.
    I don't know you guys. This is the first video I have seen of yours. You nailed it as to where I am in life: Itchy feet. Burned out with the West. In a comfort zone. It's time to make a change!

    Great video..all the reasons are good. The Philippines is a special place to me and many others. The main issue with foreigners that don't do well in the Philippines is their inability to adapt. Do NOT expect the Philippines to be a poor version of your country...it is something altogether different. But honestly, besides my gf, the best thing about the Philippines is the people. The friendliest people I have ever met...and the most amazingly beautiful, loving, caring, and supportive women.

    Thanks guys so much for your help. I was wondering because her family would really like me to move there, and honestly if my health were better I'd already be there. But I know it could be impossible for me to get around as I am also heavy, hence the power chair. She is willing to move here, we were just trying to appease her family. Again thanks for taking the time and effort to answer my question. Wish you both the best, and blessings on you, your house, and all who enter there.

    Philippines is nice until the money runs out. I hate the rat race in California but I must wait until I collect my pension at 55 two years from now. I thought about moving to the Phil 14 years ago but my better judgement told me to wait. I am glad that I wait. Philippines is hell if you are short on money. If you get serious ill without enough money then you die. I have paid for med, lab test, surgery and check up for my girlfriend mom. It is not cheap at all. Med is more expensive than in the USA. It is a very risky move to Phil without steady income like pension. Quite a few expat have die because they cannot pay for the medical treatment. Some expat become homeless when the money runs out. I have been to Phil 5 times. There are many paradise in Phil but...they all cost money. I am not preaching here. I share with you the reality of living in the Phil. Enough said.

    • @PhilippineDreams
      @PhilippineDreams  10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Well said. Yep, the Philippines (or anyplace for that matter) is a bad place to be if you don't have any money. Medical care is (much) cheaper here but meds are more expensive (insurance doesn't cover them). The Phils is also a bad place to be if you are an alcoholic.

    Ned thanks for sharing about your life. I'm the opposite of you I moved to USA when I was 8 and still have lots of family in Socal and friends. I sometimes miss home but I enjoy my job, the modern conveniences, the nice packed freeway systems. Also the great weather in Socal...the beaches are nice but not as nice as the Philippines and the water is much colder in California. It took awhile to really, really learn the english language and be able to read and write effectively. Maybe one day I will retire once my 2 little girls are grown and move to Buhi which I think is south of Manila where my grandma's house sits empty since she passed away 20 years ago. Took me awhile to get used to the fast food like hamburgers and tacos as well as pizzas. They didn't have those type of foods back home in the 70's. Watching these youtube videos it's amazing on how much the Philippines has grown with lots of different American food. Keep up the awesome job that your doing. Your videos are so informative and I enjoy seeing how things have changed drastically.:)

      Socal can be pretty awesome and I do miss conveniences that we have in the US. There are a lot of fast food places here now, which might account for the burgeoning waistlines in some Filipinos. :) Glad we can do videos so you can see your home country.

    You did not need to convince my wife and I about living in The Philippines but your video strengthened our resolve. Our desire is to create a team of people helping us with things in our business for the same amount of money it would cost to hire one person in the US. We are planning to live in both the US and the Philippines but we have to figure out how to make that work with legal and tax issues.

      I was stationed in the Philippines for three years in the early 80s. I got to the point I didn't even hear the roosters, the tricycles or the barking dogs after awhile. It was all white noise to me. When I got back to the States I was very restless, couldn't sleep and didn't know why. An old Chief told me I was missing the background noise of the Philippines. I started sleeping with the radio on, and it worked; I could sleep again. I still sleep with the TV on to this day.

    Hi, First of all >>> compliments for this video. Secondly, what a recognizable story. Not all the 10 points, but at least 5 of them. Anyway, I come here already since middle '90's. At that time twice a year holiday for three weeks. The beginning was strange for me. In Europe you have a certain way of living, but what I discovered here, it was completely different. After a few times back and forward, I noticed that I was missing the Phill's, the moment I was back home. So I decided, after retired, start living there. And that's what I did. In between I was hoping to get "used" to >> fall in line, fill out these papers, doing everything two or three times, before something happened etc. On the other hand, the people are friendly, helpful , prices are half, as what I spend before,and last but not least, eventually I found my wife here. So in short, I'm happy. Yes, you're right, sometimes the temperature getting too much hi ( like last week ), almost 40 degrees C. But after two thunderstorms, it went down. Funny to see that >> people , especially the children, taking shower on the street. Staying now for a couple of years and in fact I don't want to go back anymore. My country changes a lot, the last 15 years, but not in a positive way; on the contrary. All in all , like I mentioned, I feel happy here and I hope, that you and your wife feeling the same thing. Grtz from Biñan.

    This video of yours persuaded me to subscribe. We seem to have a few things in common. Like a love for seafood, sandy beaches, being in the company of people who smile easily. And, from a previous video, your love of reading. (Given that you taught for a while at a Philippines University, maybe we have that in common. I was an Econ prof at a US university for 33 years--now retired). The one big difference between us: you took the big plunge and found fulfilment in a drastically new setting. I chickened out. So now I do the next best thing and live vicariously through the experiences of people like you.

    Love your videos. I've got a filippina girlfriend, her name is Dyndel, she's from Tabango in Leyte. She's the most awesome woman I've ever known, a breath of fresh air. I've known her for 3 years now. I'm from New Zealand, I've got an ex wife, she epitomized everything about western woman, that I've come to dislike. But Dyndel's attitudes and outlooks are so different.
    I managed to visit her last year, it was only for a week, I didn't want to spend longer I case of rejection. But she held my hand from the moment we'd physically met, we had talked on skype, but in person was so much better. And from then on, I knew how much she loved me, and it made me love her more. So when I got back, I started saving for my second trip, because I knew I wanted to marry her. But then Typhoon Yolanda hit, and I supported her thru that instead of saving for my next trip. But, the downside was her family, putting pressure on her to ask me for money beyond my means. This the downside, and it almost caused us to break up, but it wasn't her, it was the pressure of her family. Then at my job my hours got reduced to part time, and my means of living stayed the same. But this isn't a sob story. I've managed to change my mean of living, and am able to save, for my next trip, and support her. It'll be slow going, but I'll get there, she is worth it. Though the biggest challenge now is the lack of communication, because we're texting, and network connections, can be bad at times, but I know all of this can make us stronger in the long run.
    Anyway thanks for listening. I'd love to bring her to NZL, eventually, but if that didn't work out, I'd want to be living where he is.
    So ill keep watching your videos for advice. Though I have a question, what kind of work can foreigners do in the Philippines? My background, is the warehouse and stores work, folk hoist driving etc, I know I probably, wouldn't be able to get that kind of work, just wanting to know what options exist.

    Hey Ned well just watched your lasted video here, and yes it was a good one, Shows alot about you and how you are there, i wish to go there also in maybe 6 months, But you know you let us down as Americans when your still afraid to open up to her with your heart to your lady ... She seems so special and preciousness too.... you need to let her know that sometimes , People there will think we are all cold like you, with our feelings locked away (living in a cold climate does that to people I know...... I lived in N Y 10 years and I have shoveled my last driveway in this lifetime ) ..... so relax and enjoy your life.... your woman and your world..... and be open to her before its to late ......mmmmm just suggestion... The videos are great your both great too and the expressions on your lady's face have me laughing all the time so tell her thanks

    Pretty cool video. I'm an American and can see where you are coming from. It's very hard here in the states, so expensive and so much pressure. Seems like the key is taking responsibility for yourself and having some order in your life. After that, if you are fortunate enough to meet a nice honest girl then you can start a good life. It must still seem to be a lot of work but more rewarding than here in the states. The clean environment must also play a part in it. Having a family is good but must be very well planned. Husband and wife must work together at all times. No secrets or distractions. True commitment from husband and wife and always looking for opportunity for the children.

      There are lots of nice ladies in the Philippines. But be careful. And not because you might meet a gold digger, but....as in my case, if you don't find someone who's at least at the same education level as you, and isn't into a lot of the same things you like, you'll find down the road that your relationship will suffer. Everything from lifestyle, diet, past times, education, all matter.

      If you are married to a Filipina citizen and you enter the country with her, you are eligible for a free "balikbayan visa." which is good for one year. The details are noted at www.philippineconsulate.com.au/balikbayan-one-year-visa-free-stay.html That is actually the Australian consulate but it applies to all foreigners coming into the country with a Filipina/Filipino spouse. You both would have to leave the country every year (quick trip up to Malaysia or somewhere with a cheap flight) to renew it on the way back into the country. Short, international flights are cheap, so the BB visa is actually the best.

    Hi Ned and Michell. I’ve been living in South America for the past 10 years, and I’m retiring permanently to the Philippines. I fly to Cebu on August 8th, looking for a car to buy. I’d like to find a Mitsubishi Pajero or something similar. I’ll also be looking for a house or an apartment to rent near the beach, where it’s relatively quiet and not too hot, possibly Mactan, Cebu, Bohol, Dumaguete, Iloilo, Bacolod, Davao, or Dauin. Please let me know if you have any suggestions for me. Mark Cohen

    Ned, you make superb videos. I am fond of viewing your ventures in and around Dumaguete because that is the place where I was born. My family emigrated to the States when I was only 2 years old but I have been back to visit two times with the family and two times as a solo traveler. During my last visit, I explored Robinsons Mall, Rizal Boulevard, Hayahay restaurant, Mang Inasal, Jollibee, and a dive resort in Dauin. The combination of a college town atmosphere tucked within the beautiful tropical countryside got me to think about making Dumaguete my place of retirement during my latest sojourn. But when I saw your videos and Ricky's videos on LifeBeyondTheSea, my mind has been made up and I am currently making plans to move to 'The City of Gentle People' in January 2020 when I retire from my government job. I am just curious on how you are able to learn Cebuano so well. My parents did not speak to me and my brothers in Cebuano when we were growing up, so I have very limited knowledge of this dialect. But, in the 8 or 9 months that you have been there, I think I heard or saw written over 40 Cebuano words in your videos. That is more than I know, for sure. But, I hope when I start living there permanently, I can pick up the dialect as well as you have. Please continue these videos, it is both information and also an inspiration so that I can continue working in my 'gubmint' job until the day I am eligible to retire with a 'gubmint' pension. Thanks for your efforts in putting the videos together.

    • @PhilippineDreams
      @PhilippineDreams  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dang - thanks a lot, man. Cebuano/bisaya is actually more difficult to learn than I thought. I am pretty good with Spanish but the local grammar is all over the place. I actually know enough to be dangerous now - I can get the gist of a conversation but not the specifics which can lead to misinterpretations. I actually need to put more effort into it, as I plan on staying in the Visayas for a good long time. Thanks again Joel and stay tuned for more updates.

    I am 1/2 Filipino and have never gone back to the PI. I've always wanted to go and visit Cebu an Baguio City, which my lola is from. But my lola and my mom would always tell me that I would be kidnapped if I went back because I look 'Too American'. Then some people I have talked to, who are native filipinos here in the states have told me the same thing, kidnapping is like a sport there. I recently watched the movie, Metro Manila, which made me even more nervous. This all has me wondering-- will I be safe if I go back? As an American living in PI, what is your perspective? My want to experience where my family is from still over shadows my fear, but curious to know what you think on that matter. I really enjoy your channel and the gratitude that you have. Philippine Dreams Right! I still remember that when I was growing up in Marikina way back in the late 1977. when it rains, it pours unless it's a typhoon that can cover an entire island no power, no running water, rations were low and just an out house next to a bamboo shack. The whole shack creeks the entire morning while, we were trying to ride out the powerful wind.. Man! those were some real hard times..

      I have tried durian and didn't like it. Haven't tried the balut yet. Need to fortify myself with lots of Red Horse before I head down that road.

    Quick comment ! That scowl look you see in my face is technically a smile, my face muscles are ascending upwards and with great difficulty trying to sustain its trending movement. In the near future, I will be working on my grimace with teeth. Ned, Thank you. Michell also known as the Pagadian princess of Mindanao, Thank you for befriending my buddy from New England. Who gives a new meaning to the Queens English .

      Yep - my smile comes a lot more naturally now - but it took a lot of practice. Luckily, this is the place to be to get that practice.

      Philippine Dreams Doing all the right things, and yet I've come to the realization that I too will soon be an economic refugee seeking greener pastures abroad. As soon as baby boomers come to a full retirement age, I foresee an influx of boomers going overseas. Some will continue to work because they cannot afford to retire. Wall street crash of 2008 ate up their retirement nest egg. I am still crunching the numbers, doing the research...arming myself with knowledge. Truth be told, I am so tired of being taxed without representation. Dealing with a do nothing congress who are bought and paid for by greedy corporations. Rant stops here>....

    Ned, I love the videos. I’m married to a Filipino and live in New Mexico. We own a condo in Cebu City, land in the mountains and we are building a house in Dalaguete, Cebu. I am 4 years away from Social Security, I don’t have a lot a money stashed away, but on SS I will receive over $2000 a month. Do you think that is enough for a family to live comfortably. I work 70 to 80 hours a week and I’m tired.

    I'm feeling very similar dude at age 51. Please tell me about how to make that retirement gap between when you can still be young and strong enough to live but must wait ten to fifteen more years before you can apply for US social security. Suppose I could sell all my stuff here and arrive there with say 10m pesos in the bank. Could I really enjoy life instead of the daily work grind here in the cold? Thanks.
