    Here are some hints for foreigners to ponder upon being in the Philippines to be safe with as follows: 1)set limitations when counting on friends,say hi to whom you meet,and that’s it,nothing more beyond.Be choosey to whom you really consider true friends. 2)Privacy at home is very important and that must be dealt with your Filipino wife to beware of having her family members or worst,relatives into your home.Your wife can be the best but relatives always end up the worst to be with. 3)Security is foremost living here,do not allow people inside home,have a lot of dogs on cage to be freed nighttime only. 4)Refrain from local investments,it will cause you trouble soon as it succeeds.Thats it for now,have a wonderful stay in these tropical islands.

    I'm a Westerner (Brit) living in Philippines (Palawan) and these are helpful tips - especially the getting up early&siesta and the motorbike ones. We do nearly all our shopping with just the motorbike (grocery shopping for a family of four) and don't own any other vehicle. We rent a 2nd motorbike if we want to go away somewhere for a couple of days as a family.

    Great videos Ned.
    I have been married to a filipina from Gingoog Mindanao for 8 years now and I can tell you we are both very happy.
    Even with a 25 year age difference it has never been a problem or issue.
    It took a whole year to process the visa for her to come here.
    I was thinking about moving to PH in a few months and asked her what she thought about it and
    was surprised when she said absolutely positively no way.
    Looks like I will have to settle for a vacation there once in a while.
    I will be checking out your website now.
    Hope you are both will be as happy as we are.

    Yet again thank you so much for your advice. I think I would not have understood what you said if it hadn't been for the fact that I had already made some of the mistakes myself during my visits to Dumaguete and hopefully learnt from them. As far as relationships are concerned, I too have had my fingers burnt, as many of your subscribers will all too readily understand from their own experiences. I am fortunately now in a good place.

      When I was researching places in the Philippines, they mostly said that Mindanao is not a safe place because of bandits in the countryside locations. I have been to Davao 3 times so far and I have never had any issues, but my gf'ds brothers used to travel to sell books and they have ran into check points set up by locals that didn't sound great.
      When I stayed in the city, I never had any issues other than in clubs the staff would run a table service and in the process add another 50% onto the cost of drinks. They also tried to charge us 6k to sit at a table in one club. I was smoking often and I never had any issues.
      Davao is a really nice Island and the city is ok but if I do move to the Philippines, I will be looking for somewhere near to Cebu or at the least on the same Island. Keep us posted on what happens and what you decide :-)

      Very true about waking up early. I'm expat in Paris, France and kept a standard, written diary and noted expenditures my first year here. I ended up selling the diary as literature, years later. When I've had American visitors, I've urged them to go to bed early and take the siesta, too, and to get up around 5 am, which is actually very French. This is not generally a night country. Good video, thanks! I subscribed. I like expat channels and have little interest in Asia, but a good channel is way cool. There is an interview of me up on the TravelAuteurs channel people might like.

    Ned, have you visited Cebu City, or Bantanyan Island yet? I highly recommend both of them, for albeit very different reasons.
    My personal experience includes 2 months in Cebu City on 2 separate visits, and 2 months in Pagadian City on 2 separate visits.

    • @PhilippineDreams
      @PhilippineDreams  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Michael Osborne I am not a fan of Cebu City - only reasons to go there are women, immigration, shopping and the airport. I visited Pagadian City but there were constant brownouts and too many people staring.

    • @michaelosborne8947
      @michaelosborne8947 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Philippine Dreams yeah i know what you mean. I was 29 on my first visit there in 2011 and everyone thought I was some kind of celebrity or movie star. I am neither but all the staring and pointing and everyone saying Hey Joe was definitely interesting. The constant brownouts were frustrating. Mindanao is known for them

    As much as I enjoy Lifebeyondthesea videos (Henry is so mellow), your videos about the Philippines are now the most informative of any currently on the internet, at least for me.
    I've been to the Philippines lots of times, but I am just getting around to moving there in the near future.
    Loved your comment about not using your truck. I've been wondering whether I need one or not, but will definitely hold off.
    By the way....there is a Craigslist in the Philippines, with plenty of ads for housing. I doubt it is as good a way as driving around neighborhoods to find a house or an apartment however.
    I'm learning something new each time I watch one of your videos. Keep em coming!

    • @PhilippineDreams
      @PhilippineDreams  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, Al. Henry can do something that I can't - he can cogently and concisely discuss a topic without having to refer to scrip and can do it in just one take. I don't have the cognitive ability to do that. I think all the Philippine Expat channels bring something different to the mix. The craigslist here isn't developed at all - there is more stuff in the Manila and Cebu areas, but outlying cities and towns get very little coverage/ads.

    • @alrussell3639
      @alrussell3639 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Philippine Dreams You state in your videos that it would be a good idea to start a video blog. It would be, but both your and Henry's cognitive abilities put mine to shame. His calmness is admirable. He is the polar opposite of me in that regard. I have way too much ADHD to do anywhere near as well as either of you do. Your videos are great.
      Craigslist is big in Cebu and Manila, where i have spent the majority of my time. It is growing in Dumaguete from what I can gather. After seeing that a decent 1 bedroom condo in either Manila or Cebu costing at least 45K a month, I'm thinking more and more about Dumaguete being the place I settle down at in a few months.
      Keep up the great work.
      Allan

    Just recently found your channel and you have very interesting insights, so I subbed. Michell seems a very smart young lady. Tell her i said "kumusta", I was born in Carcar city, raised in Cebu city until I left there in 1983. After 26 yrs, I went back there in 2009 for the first time on a 2-week vacation with my family. I would love to retire there someday, although my husband is not too keen about that option so is my daughter. For now I can only watch other people's vlog to remind me of the Philippines...

    Some very good advice there Ned.. I can relate to alot of it.. Only been here for about 15 months, and already I have experienced alot of what you talk about, especially about the over-spending and vices... SOOO easy to just go out for a nice steak dinner at a european/american place and just not think about the cost.. Then, if you do that almost every day... It get's expensive! Wish you the best of luck! And thanks to Henry Velez (Reekay) for directing me to your channel!

    BTW... I also bought an SUV. But I actually love having it. I don't drive it all the time of course. Gas is expensive, but also it really takes longer to do errands because of traffic and lack of parking. But, don't you find having your truck useful for day trips? I take my Expedition to Manila from time to time. If I end up moving down to the Visayas, I was going to use it for day trips. And lastly, when it's the rainy season, you really kind of need a car to get through all that.

    Another great clip, bud--always love your stuff! I however, do not agree with #10. Writing end-of-day notes in a journal would be more appropriate. People should never film everything when first settling into new surroundings. Sure, some clips are okay. But if they are too busy worrying about constantly grabbing the cam, having the cam, charging the cam....etc--they will most certainly miss out on their biggest moments. They need to be IN the action, not always trying to capture it. It's a whole different perspective with separate flavors, man ;)

    The part about dating filipinas is correct. They are not like American woman. I have had 2 filipina gf's in USA and made some mistakes with them because I did not understand their culture and upbringing. I assumed they were like american woman and I was wrong. I found out about tampo and could never understand why one moment all is fine and the next I dont exist. From watching your videos and henry's and others, I realized this is almost a standard trait for filipinas. If I knew ahead of time, maybe I could of avoided alot of the headaches I caused myself and her. Looking back, I think filipinas get something in their head and it isnt going away. Once they make up their mind, that is it. I am sure after a long relationship that tends to fade away. Filipinas are great woman. I never felt so comfortable talking to a woman than a filipina. They are so easy to talk to, open, honest about feelings and very emotional and romantic and sensitive. Basically everything a man looks for in a good woman. Those good qualities definitely out-weigh the bad. Thanks for all the sharing you both do, I have learned much and look forward to coming to the Philippines later this year.

      +greatheart52 As long as you know how to say, "I am sorry." And letting her know that you care and let her know that you really dislike arguments/fight because it is not healthy in a relationship. If there are some discussions, discuss this in a nice constructive way like going for a nice romantic date and say it nicely with all the respect. Yes, that is how we are but we can also change and be much better. Tampo is not a good thing.

    Since I'm new to your channel, I've missed a lot and will probably be playing catch-up for the next few weeks, Is there any particular order your videos should be viewed? I've caught myself just bouncing from one vid to another and although they're all great, I started to wonder if I'd get more from your experience if I watched them chronologically. Thanks. Keep it up. I love your vids.

    Hey Ned, have you ever been to Panglao island? It's close to you and it has some very nice lay back beaches. I wish I could remember the name of the one I was at. Ahh it was Alona Beach. Very nice. I will be visiting Batanes in late October. Looks very laid back and non-touristy. Just the way me and my girlfriend want it this time :)

    Greetings. I was fortunate to find your video blog and very much enjoyed the first two viewings. We will plan to find number one and watch them all. For now I will simply agree that no one should miss the sunrise in the Philippines, it is probably only second to the sunset over Manila bay. My "job" ends at 4:00AM. when the New York and Chicago markets close. Grind coffee beans and brew up a fresh pot, watch the sunrise to end each work day. If it was a very good week, treat myself to a great cigar to complement the the cup of caffeine.

    Hello Ned & Michelle, great videos! My husband and I are your avid followers particularly my husband, he has been trying to hang-on on his very stressful job, but I think sometimes your videos makes him loose his grips and just wants to jump in the plane and leave :) I have to keep reminding him, he will be living the dream soon. See, we have few things to take care of before leaving the States but he's just burned out with work politics and exhausting competitive routine. I am a Filipina and I appreciate Michelle's simplicity and honest opinion on things and to you Ned, thank you for putting things in perspective by showing the good and bad side of Philippines with your experiences. We are moving back to the Philippines pretty soon to raise our daughters there. More power to you and Michelle and God bless!

    I'd be curious if there ever was a study done to determine what percentage of Filipinas would even consider marrying a foreigner that would live in the RP permanently. Of those willing, what percentage are motivated more for financial security vs. the percentage who are tired of how Filipinos have treated them and see a better chance of happiness with a foreigner.
    I have been married to and dated Asian women (not from the Philippines) who often volunteered their dislike of their male counterparts when casually asked. I've wondered if this is a common stock answer they know white guys want to hear or are they like us who feel compelled to try something different since the status quo has not worked for them either?
    Is there a chance Michell would share some insight in general terms from what she has seen and heard from female peers and relatives on this topic?

    • @PhilippineDreams
      @PhilippineDreams  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am still a relative noob, so I have no idea. I do know that Filipinos seem to be VERY family oriented and would think any Filipina moving overseas would miss them dearly. I asked Michell, and she said it's up to the individual, which makes sense. We will be addressing relationship stuff in a later video.

    Hi Ned. Recently found your site and watched a bunch of your videos the past couple of days, all informative. I have tried unsuccessfully three times using different browsers as you suggested to watch this one about your mistakes but to no avail. The audio is too low. The intro music is fine but once you start to speak I can barely hear you. Guess I'll have to skip this one and continue on.

    Is it common now that two are living together unmarried? Back in 19 forgotten when I met my wife that was not going to happen. She was a teacher at the time. I remember she told me, if we would have done it mothers would have refused to send their children to her class. She would have lost her job.
