I just stumbled on this interview by accident, 7 years after it was posted - and 37 years after "Parting Glances" was made. Bill and I were best friends and roommates in high school, and we remained friends up until his death in 1990. He wrote the role of "Klaus," the German pianist and action artist, with me in mind, and I'm so glad to have been part of this film, which among other things is a very touching memorial to Bill himself.
Besides still playing the piano, for the past 13+ years I've been writing and performing songs of my own, and I've often wondered what he would have thought of them.
Thank you for posting this interview - and thank you, Bill, wherever you are.

Dear Mr Ganger thank you so much for your comment! The loft party scene and your wonderful piano playing will never be forgotten.

@@michaelrg3836 Re the piano playing: The piano you see in the film was broken - the iron frame was irreparably fractured, so it sounded terrible. But we recorded it live in the scene and transferred my actual playing to tape. Then we re-recorded all the music in my apartment at my own piano, with me listening to the tape from the scene over headphones and synchronizing my playing to it. And it's this (re-)recording you hear on the soundtrack during these scenes!

So sad to think that Bill Sherwood would be dead four years later at the young age of 37. Thank you so much for posting this wonderful interview! #whatisrememberedlives

I suppose a lot of people say this but just want to say thank you to the makers of parting glances which was very inspiring for me as a young gay man being able to see that gay people could have very normal lives and loves like everyone else, the makers truly succeeded in their purpose and broke new ground which has led to so many changes for lgbtqi people today; such a pity that bill didn't go on to make many more movies, he would have had lots more to say

I must’ve been 25 or so when I saw Parting Glances in Durham, NC, with my partner at the time, who eventually succumbed to AIDS at only 32. He introduced me to his love of opera, which became an important part of my life. This simple, low budget film was nuanced and profound-featuring yuppie gay characters, all mainstream, professional, and goal-oriented. This depiction of gay men was unprecedented at the time. Very insightful snapshot about the complex dynamics of same-sex relationships, gay friendship. It seemed prophetic in its depiction of Nick, so resigned to his fate with this disease. I’m 61 now, and it all seems like another lifetime.

Hi there! This was recorded in 1986. I ran into Paul Kaplan on the line for the movie when it was released and he told me he was the producer and suggested I interview Bill Sherwood. Paul was from the Kaplan Testing empire and was incredibly nice. A long time ago, but seems like yesterday.
