Time to catch up and thank goodness for the internet. Maybe we can converse once again on here without the Gestapo threats.
Rid of Me is such a haunting, spine tingling performance. Then you realize its 100% her and a guitar. Her vocals get all the attention, but her technical proficiency with any instrument she touches, esp. rhythm guitar, is utterly freakish.
@@maxwatkins5166 I get it. I was referring more to her ability to play any instrument she takes up. There are not a lot of rock guitarists who can pick up a saxophone and tear it up.

If you are lucky enough to catch Polly at Glasto this June, prepare to be amazed! I stood in the pouring rain in 2016 , and as soon as I could, bought the CD to relive that remarkable experience...
Today I found out Steve Albini died (a few days ago) at 61... Feeling totally gutted, so I'm listening to as much of the music he produced as I can. This is obviously live, but still, it's making me feel a tiny bit better...
I bought stories from the city... on CD three times. Everytime an Ex moved out she took the CD with her. If this ever happens again i'll buy it for a fourth time.
Attention cameraman: Concentrate on the power coming from the speakers via the guitar and voice. Six strings and vocal chords captivating tens of thousands. Incredible.
No - I don't think so. Her songs aren't catchy enough, nor was she sufficiently innovative. She has a couple that are strong - Sheela na Gig, Grow Grow Grow and a few others. But she didn't break new ground in the way Pixies did, nor did she pen unforgettable melodies like Nirvana.
My daughter has just turned 17 and discovered PJ. I think that Unfunny Username neglects how visceral her songs are and how the lyrics speak to many, especially young girls and women.
@@joeporter4920 There are tens of thousands of bands with some brilliantly catchy songs that never made the mainstream. Husker Du, Dino Jnr, Sparklehorse, Teenage Wrist, etc. etc. In the real world it's far more to do with production and budget. A relatively bland song that's "well-produced" is more likely to get air play and commercial success than a song with a gorgeous melody but ramshackle studio treatment.

I only wish I had never met her! But seriously: First song is like she rules the entire venue with just her voice, her guitar and without her backing band. Who else might be able to pull that off?!
"I can't believe, life's so complex, when I just want to sit here and watch you undress!" Always loved that line! :D What a great performance of one of my all time favorite female musicians! :)
A "fan" of mine recently told me that his fav singer is PJ Harvey. I had never heard of her, so naturally I searched her on TH-cam. She does have an intensity about her.
When she first came on the scene her sound and look were intriguing and enticing. In a 30-year retrospect, she was so powerful and sexy and awesome, yet so quiet and down-to-earth.
I really respected it in an interview when Polly was asked if she was a feminist and if she felt an obligation as a woman to help up and coming female musicians, and she just said “No”. I respected this because she treats everyone the same. She’s always been an amazing musician, and makes great art, and transcends all the social politics in the industry.
mic technique 101!! If you are coaching a vocalist explain the dynamics and the effect it will have and then ask them to think of the microphone as a little "being" that they are singing to, such as a bunny that they love or the person they want to get their emotion across to. Up close in the ear and intimate or step back and shout at the bastard!! They get it and then they practice having fun with it knowing how it will sound in the product! Pete, your's is the first I've ever seen anyone mention this....singers take note!!
I missed seeing Polly in the 90s but caught her in the 2000s, been a fan of her since the Peel days. She is just an insanely talented artist. Covers all genres. A pure polymath on composition, lyrics, production and instruments. Her evolution as an artist with her different 'personas' is a pure joy to follow. Caught her on the Stories from the City tour and then later on the Hope six tour. An absolute tour de force. Her talent just pisses over many other artists.
I saw her at the Paladium in LA in the ‘90s. Lost the contents of my purse including the keys to my stepmother’s car I borrowed that night while stage diving. Shoot. Couldn’t find them after the show. Oh, & a band (with an annoying hit ‘Creep’) called Radiohead opened for her.
