Night Fever (from the movie 'Saturday Night Fever') Originally, songs from Boz Skaggs and Stevie Wonder were used for the movie. At the viewing, the directors felt it needed a different sound. Robert Stigwood, their manager at the time, asked for 5 songs for the movie. They had planned on using these songs for their next project.
    (1) Stayin' Alive (2) How Deep Is Your Love (3) Night Fever
    (4) More Than a Woman (5) If I Can't Have You
They had no say about where to use the songs. Barry didn't always have a falsetto voice. When recording the song 'Nights on Broadway,' for the Main Course album, their new manager, Arif Mardin, asked, 'Can any of you scream, scream in falsetto.' So, you know, give us an ad lib or a scream at the end." Although all 3 brothers could sing falsetto, Barry volunteered. On the song 'Nights on Broadway' the words 'Blaming it all' became their trademark sound from then on.

I enjoy your reactions so much-- comes across so genuine. Thanks for doing their disco as a "period" in their life's work. It's logical and makes sense. The other late seventies R&B, funk, disco Bee Gees period that were just a continuation of almost miraculous prolific string of hits--
"(Love You) Inside and Out" --No video, just the studio track, but that's okay-- the listen is worth it-- maybe a lyric video, even their "Love So Right"-- sublime lyrics. Neither is a dance song. They wrote Billboard Hot 100 hits for others too, during this 5-year period-- Yvonne Elliman "If I Can't Have You" (dance-y) and " Samantha Sang "Emotions" was huge-- covered by Destiny's Child in the 90's and even the Bee Gees themselves! One of my personal favorites "Tragedy" another #1 Hot 100-- covered by Steps a decade and a half later.
Please listen to the original studio track for "Tragedy." The later concert videos don't hold a candle to the instrumentation in the studio version.

This is actually my favorite Bee Gees music video because I honestly feel its so beautifully shot cinematically. With the blue lighting and the tight shots of them singing, with all three of there heads so close together, you never see this anywhere else with another group. No matter how many times I see this, I am in awe at how perfectly in sync Barry and Robin singing during the chorus., esp the 2nd choruse (2:58 mark to see what I mean). Their heads right next together like that and it would be so easy to make a mistake but it's flawless and perfection. This was the perfect thing to be able to see after a very long day. I'm a psychotherapist and had a 10 hour day of clients. This was just what I needed to give me a lift! Thanks once again!
Also...the drum beat from Staying Alive was taking from this song. (The part where he sings "here I am..."

It's incredible to imagine that this song and most of the other Bee Gees' songs from Saturday Night Fever were actually written at an ancient chateau in the French countryside. Their Fever songs have such an urban vibe, but as Robin had said, "the cows in the meadows outside the chateau windows were the first to hear Staying Alive and Night Fever". They were writing songs for their new album when Robert Stigwood asked them for songs for his new movie in the works and the brothers gave him what they had been working on. We'll never know what that album would have been like but there's no doubt it would have been amazing out of this world!

great song, great video! in terms of the #1 smash hits from the disco era, the only two you’ve missed (i think!) are Tragedy and Love You Inside Out - both of which aren’t necessarily disco but very much 70s R&B and funk. Unfortunately neither have music videos for some reason, but there’s plenty of lyric or audio videos. To get the full scoop though I would also recommend checking out Grease by Frankie Valli, which was another number one hit written BUT not sung by the bee gees for the film Grease! Brilliant video, cant wait for more!

I just realised one of their earlier songs had a bit of similarity to the beat here. It's called "Jive Talking," very funky. They heard the beat when driving over a bridge often. This song was written for their album, they were asked to write songs for a movie, so they pulled this and others from their unreleased album. The movie was Saturday night fever, starring John Travolta, dancer in a white suit. They went on to also write music, for John's movie Grease, with Olivia Newton-John.

New subscriber. I find your reviews of these songs captivating. You have a great voice and your reactions to the songs are perfect. I am also torn between 1) some excitement for you in your new awakening to some of this music and 2) a sense of sadness that you didn't get to live it at the time and places of its origins. At the time this music was new, there was a lot less media competing with it for people's attention. Thirty or so cable channels, no Internet, no cell phones, and few PCs. The prominence of great hit music like this was far more impactful in the 70's and 80's than it is today. At the same time this music was being released, the technology to listen to it on and the capabilities of recording were reaching levels that aren't that much better today. In all, there really wasn't anything like this era for how sensational music was on a relative basis. It was the best of times if you were a music fan, be it disco, rock, country, or other...

Thanks, Anthony! I appreciate the kind words! Also, thank you for the insight and information about that time frame. I love reading about these eras and trying to picture myself living at that time. The sights, the smells, the vibes, the way people communicated, the cars, the fashion, the whole thing! I wish I could literally travel in time and experience such great moments!

Sir Barry and the boys come in second only to Sir Paul McCartney for number of songs, Top 10 hits and #1s. Notice Maurice is wearing the same shirt as in 'How Deep Is Your Love'? 🤠 Please react to Robin's video - 'Boys Do Fall In Love', surprisingly different, and cool!

So I just watched several of the videos you did reacting to Bee Gees music from the Saturday Night Fever era. I wanted to say that they wrote those songs, that music, for Saturday Night Fever before they ever saw the movie. They were told what it was about and they wrote the music. If that is not phenomenal I don't know what else is!

Disco, the music of love and inclusion, had a lot of great cuts. Too many for me to list. Disco was a shared experience, best done with your partner on the dance floor. Disco didn't care your age, your color, how you looked, your sexual nature, or you physical capabilities. All were welcome. The BeeGees didn't invent disco, nor were they one of the first, but they did it well. Listen to Donna Summer doing "Last Dance", "Love To Love You Baby", "I Feel Love", "Bad Girls" and "Hot Stuff". Listen to Dan Hartman doing "Vertigo/Relight My Fire" and Loletta Holoway with Dan Hartman doing "Love Sensation", Chic doing "Le Freak" and "Everybody Dance", Tavaras doing "Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel", The Hues Corporation doing perhaps the first disco song "Rock The Boat", George McCrae doing "Rock Your Baby", his wife Gwen McCrae doing "Rockin' Chair", Amii Stewart doing "Knock On Wood", Earth Wind and Fire doing "Boogie Wonderland", just too many.

They hated being associated with disco. They never claimed to be disco. KC and the Sunshine Band was more disco than The Bee Gees. Barry has even said that.
