Just bought our first home in March. The neighbors have blackberries on the back fence line. We have been enjoying daily berries with vanilla ice cream.
You always have interesting videos. Been watching for a long time. Though I haven't always responded or commenting, I'm starting to try and comment on more videos. I think it helps the algorithm. Thank you for all your content.
I've grown Blackberries for many years and I've found a great way to store them. Let me show you the best way I've found to freeze blackberries. alan homesteadadvisor.com/
We freeze our berries exactly that way using trays..... I always use vacuum sealer once their frozen...on our sealer the vacuum/seal button just hit it a second time in the vacuum process at about %70 and it stops vacuuming and seal's the bag... definitely helps prevent freezer burn
Vacuum seal the frozen berries: When you have taken out the majority of the air (before they are crushed) hit the seal button and you are done. I do it all the time with frozen bread etc so it doesn't crush.
Most times I do NOT wash. IF you DO wash, make sure you lay them on a towel so they are completely dry before you freeze them or they will be a clump That's why I don't freeze The consensus online is mixed ... some wash... some don't
My blackberry and raspberry plants are just beginning to fruit, so I’ll do this as they ripen. I have taken to using this method for store bought blackberries and raspberries. Whenever I find a good price, I’ll buy a few more containers than usual. Over the course of a couple days I am able to get them all frozen and bagged up. My wife likes to chill her yogurt in the freezer - while the yogurt is chilling, we put the frozen fruit in a bowl on the countertop. By the time the yogurt is ready, the fruit is perfectly thawed.
I freeze my berries loosely as well. I do vacuum seal them, though, and it doesn’t crush them. You can’t just grab a handful, though. I spray mine with an organic spray for spotted wing drosophila, so I wash mine first.
If you don’t mind, how many plants do you have and are they enough for your family? Planning out many I should do for my family of five. Aiming for 40 but that a guess…can you ever have too much?
I have 18 plants in containers. I will probably get 15 gallon bags of berries or something like that You should expect a gallon of berries per plant when they are mature, and taken care of. Hope that helps, alan
I am planning to plant raspberries and blackberries in my backyard. What zone are you within in Texas? I live on the outskirts of the Texas hill country.
Beautiful crop, I like your method of growing blackberrie bushes in those plastic drums keeping the plants contained from spreading to unwanted area's and also looks like you may be able to space the plants out a little better for growing and picking. Thx for sharing. The seed is mentioned in several key places in Scripture Genesis 1:12 Creation Genesis 7:3 Noah Genesis 17:7-9 Abraham. The the last book in the Old Testament Malachi, the last Chapter 4, the last verse 6 specifically the KJV 😢 And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse. The Seed is the future through its direction and sustainability.
Those are some nice berries. When you got your Ponca I also got 48 plants. Mine have been ripening for over a week now. I’m in 9A not too far from you in SW Louisiana. The Ponca are really sweet but I have a tremendous big problem here. They are loaded with potato and stink bugs. Neem oil isn’t doing any good. County agent has not gotten back to me with a solution. They may just ruin my first year yield.
I haven't seen any potato bugs on them, but yes, the stink bugs are out in force. *Bug Buster II* will work on stink bugs. Hoss sells it. Here's my Associate Link to HOSS TOOLS: bit.ly/homesteadadvisor
Alan your blackberries look amazing great work that you did with them, I tried to order those Star black gem primocane blackberries from them but sold out for memorial day weekend with free shipping but got 50 bareroot of the TriStar strawberry instead, maybe 4th of July they will have another sale with free shipping.
Darn, those berries look so good they're making my tongue want to slap my brains out to eat a few. You sure do know how to torture someone hungry for berries. lol
Yep, I do. I don't spray a lot, so I live with them somewhat. However, there are several sprays that will help control them on Hoss Tools website. Here's my Associate Link to Hoss Tools: bit.ly/homesteadadvisor
If I came over and said I identify as a little old 94 year old lady, could I get a lb or two picked?? please forgive my middle aged man appearance! lol

@@BIGALTX My pleasure. Love the stuff on the Thornless Blackberries.
I just bottled up a gallon of homemade blackberry wine from my 2021 Kiowa blackberries. It is amazing
Nice! 👍😎

Hmmm I may have to see if my vacuum sealer will do that... thanks!
Take care of yourself old man! I love your videos!!
Hahaha.. I'm TRYIN' 😎

Thanks!!
A couple of things:
If you don't stare at them to hard, you won't see the bugs.
Think of the bugs as flavor enhancers, kind of like pepper.
Absolutely!
hahaha
Thanks for the video. This is what I do with my blackberries.
Thanks for the confirmation :)
Thanks for sharing your videos and keep them coming please.
More to come!
I don’t spray either, I’m always watering so the berries stay pretty clean. Thanks for the video.
Right on
Beautiful berries, thanks for the video
Thanks for visiting
OH, I'd love to come pick some berries with my grand son's
I'd love to have you :)
I was just thinking about how to freeze or preserve blackberries as I have started more bushes this year.
Glad you found me :)
I've found this to be the best way
Looks great! I bet it would work to run them through a salad spinner to dry them after you wash them. Good looking berries.
Salad spinner might work.
Thanks for the tip!
@@BIGALTX Welcome
Thank you, Alan.
You bet! 👍
So do you wash them before or after you freeze the berries? Great videos by the way because of you I now have over 1000 Plants!!!

How many buckets do you have and where in Texas are you? Trying to decide if it would work in Wedt Texas.
I'm in ETX .. Smith co
I have 18 tubs with blackberries and several with veggies
My blackberries are going well this year!
Fantastic!
I hope I've been of some help to you :)

Which insect spray do you use?
@@BIGALTX I use spinosad.

I'm in Zone 8
Don't know about raspberries, but blackberries should do well where you are

Thanks for the scripture reference.
Spacing the tubs out a little bit also gives them better air circulation, and probably helps with disease control.
Great information, I freeze blueberries using the same method. God Bless!
Good to know... thanks!

Trying blackberries in our Mohave high desert community, but the winds are really making it hard🇺🇸
Make sure you have a trellis: th-cam.com/video/Xsnce7OiPjM/w-d-xo.html
So easy to build.

That's the first I've heard of the Black Gems.
I'll check it out... thanks!
I have organic wild blackberries, the birds don't eat many, more than enough for me so I will freeze most.
Free berries are always good berries 😊
Good golly, I hope to have berries that size, some day! Yummy!! 👍
You can do it!!!
Darn, those berries look so good they're making my tongue want to slap my brains out to eat a few. You sure do know how to torture someone hungry for berries. lol
Hahaha... come over and eat a few! :)
Do you sell cuttings?
Nope.
I think ALL new blackberry varieties are "patented" now and should not be sold unless licensed to propagate them
I'm not licensed :(

Thank you! I won’t wash mine either.☺️😋
You’re welcome 😊
You don’t wash them?
I don't
Some do... but you must dry them completely before freezing or they will clump together
