Iolani means Royal or Heavenly Hawk. There was a previous wooden palace on the site, but Iolani Palace was build by King David Laʻamea Kalākaua. The King, his wife Queen Kapiʻolani lived in the palace until the Kingʻs death. His sister, Lydia Kamakaʻeha Liliʻuokalani succeeded him and was overthrown by American business men and plantation owners, on January 17th, 1893, when we lost our sovereignty as an independent nation. The palace is one of the most revered and sacred places to us Native Hawaiians.

The Palace was the last residence of Hawaiian Royalty, Queen Liliuokalani. The U.S. Government over though her Monarchy & Kingdom. She was tried & imprisoned, on house arrest up in her bedroom. You should learn the stolen history of Hawai’i. Take the tour of the Palace & learn. The Bishop Museum is a must also, to learn the True Hawaii. ✌️🤙

At first, I was worried about this video being a negative video of Hawai'i, but you did a nice job showing things. You were fair in speaking about things. You showed some cool things of the place I live. I was born and raised in Hawai'i.
Just so you know, Honolulu is pronounced Honolulu, not Hanalulu. Hawaiian pronunciations need some work though. I would suggest speaking to a local first to get right pronunciations, then say the word. You could do that for all your future videos.

Regarding pate in banh mi, it's usually in the banh mi with cold cuts (head cheese, steamed pork, sliced ham). If the fillings have a grilled component (in your case it might've been pork belly), the pate is generally omitted. I learned about this pretty quickly, since I also love pate in banh mi. I think it might be because the pate will melt into a sauce if added with heated meat. I also had a meal at the Pig and Lady, it was nice, but very loud and noisy.

    Some missed points:
    - The block with Obake (hand roll sushi of the year, Skull & Crown and Olay Thai. They all have great food & drinks (Olay is BYOB) as well as sharing a cool open-air backyard
    - Across the street from Obake is top 3 cafes with “Po’Ai by Pino Potions”
    - Wings Ice Cream has in-house made ice cream with their own unique flavors liked burnt plantain…really good
Also, judging Pig & Lady strictly off the banh mi is a disservice to the level of skill chef Andrew has. CIA trained, James Beard recognized and a household name for all foodies on the island

Zane mentioned that his palette was spoiled from his time in Vietnam. It's obvious that bahn mi here on Oahu is DEFINITELY not going to compare as well as from it's birth country.
I personally agree with his take on P&TL. It's overpriced Viet food and the service there is mediocre at best. Just because Chef Andrew is decorated highly does not mean he can whip out perfect food every time.

    • @earlj.d.6285
      @earlj.d.6285 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@ArchivedGeo I agree that accolades aren’t the end-all-be-all but most people are delusional when it comes to eating food in a different place. The same coffee will taste better when you’re in a garden viewing the Eiffel Tower, compared to consuming it in Ohio looking at trees. Blind taste test him on banh mi and he won’t be able to tell one from Vietnam vs any other Viet spot in Chinatown
      Overpriced, I won’t argue that.

I used to work in downtown HNL, a couple of blocks from Chinatown. There was a woman in my department who was ethnic Chinese originally from
Burma. One day, she suggested that the whole department should go for lunch together at a Chinese restaurant that she liked (the same one I usually went to for lunch) and that we let her order for us. She ordered dishes that weren't on the menu and it was the best Chinese food any of us non-Chinese people had ever had.

Maunakea Market is solid. Just wish had more parking that wasn't so expensive. Be careful if you're in Chinatown past dark, it's not the safest place to be during the day, but at night, be careful if you're alone. If you go in a group of at least 3 or more, you should be fine, but it can get sketchy past dark for individuals just taking a stroll.

The Pig and The Lady is good, I always get their Pho and their drinks are bomb too. But my favorite spot to hit up in Chinatown is called Maguro Bros. They have a seared Ahi Belly rice place that is to die for. Its like the Wagyu/Kobe beef of fish, the fat drips into the rice and the fish melts in your mouth. It used to be located inside that open market with all the fruit but they moved down street inside sort of a hawker stall area.

Pretty barren. I worked downtown and it's usually bustling but not crowded. It's odd to not see homeless tents lining the streets.

Hawaii hasn't been what I expected at all. Sad to see the state of housing there, but thank you for keeping those clips that highlighted the issues. I hope things change for the people there that need it.

It's the business hub, genius -- not for tourists. Duh. Go scour the shipyards and garbage dumps on Sand Island next and decry how run down they are. EVERY city has an underside that makes the rest of it function.

If you are looking for hard drugs and crazy people, Honolulu is the spot. If additionally you want shitty food that is also overpriced, hit up Wakiki.
