      nikola mandic There's nothing wrong with a 10 or 15 watt Frontman Amp as a practice Amp or a bedroom Amp & you could do a LOT worse than a Bullet Strat too - They are actually pretty good values. I play a Telecaster, but I picked up a Bullet Strat HH & Frontman 10 for practice - I think they both perform very well & are easy to tote to & from practice. Enjoy what you have, as long as you're making music, it's all good. :)

      Nikola, the bullet strats are actually pretty decent for the money, I've been playing guitar for around 8 years now and have several guitars in my arsenal, but the one I play the most is a Squire Bullet Affinity Strat that I picked up for $89 at guitar center on a holiday sale. I had them do a good setup on it and replaced the tuning knobs with Fender locking tuners and it plays and sounds great! It's one of my favorites, if you're not happy with the tone just invest in a little higher quality amp, you can get an Orange practice size amp for fairly cheap and they sound great, and they'll make that guitar sound fantastic.

      SRT Viper 51 i recommend a epiphone studio 15r, they are cheap, durable,and have overdrive and reverb. it has a total output of 32 watts. and u must note it has 2 inputs, so a friend can plug in ,too.

    The Affinity series guitars are actually very decent, it's the tiny Frontman amp that makes them sound bad. For a beginner, I'd recommend finding a Squier that you like, and then investing a little bit more money to get a nicer amp. Believe me, it's totally worth it.

      I don't think the frontman 15g was a really bad amp.
      I use it for the clean sounds with treble:9 middle:2 or 3 and bass on 10.
      For the dirty sounds, use pedals :)

      See I tend to guide beginning guitar players towards the Vintage Modified series. I find the overall build is a better as well, they come stock with Duncan Designed pickups, giving them an over all better tone. It will also last longer than the Chinese made affinity guitars (In my experience). Spend a bit more money to get a bit more play time out of it! Just my opinion though.

    This is for all the new or intermediate guitarists thinking of purchasing a squier.
    Back in 2005 my first guitar was a cheap $150 Squier bullet with the amp combo, I was so excited because my other friends just started playing the same time as me but they all had jackson guitars or gibson SG as their first guitars and i couldn't afford that and they would always tease me that i got a "cheap shitty guitar" and said I should have saved for a "real" fender strat
    it almost discouraged me from learning guitar
    HOWEVER
    Its now 2017 I now have a few american and mexican made strats, an ibanez prestige, a les paul studio, and a gibson firebird and to this day I still own and play that first Squier regularly. it still has the same pickups and everything aside from the strings I havent changed anything on that guitar and its lasted me 12 years. I even bought another squire for $100 just because.
    Sure the Squier doesn't sound as good as my other guitars but its really light weight and its fun to play and I feel having a guitar that is fun to play is they key for any guitarist to stick with the instrument.
    My only advice is if you're new to guitar playing and you decide to get a squier bring it to a professional and have it setup properly or even ask your sales associate if they would do it for you or you can research and learn to set the intonation yourself and I promise you you'll have a good time learning to play on this guitar if its set properly.
    Also having a decent amp makes a world of difference.
    Basically to anyone reading don't be discouraged by what people say and dont think just because a guitar says squier or epiphone or whatever and people consider it a "beginner" or "learning" guitar its a bad instrument you dont need an american made custom strat or a les paul or some expensive guitar to sound good especially when learning the main thing is having a decent amp, and a properly setup guitar, and some good pickups later down the line if you can afford it.

      DanielConley dude I just wanted you to know that I followed your advise... my bullet Strat is just fine... after a few month I did change the tuners to fender locking tuners and its a great guitar... the fender frontman 10g is ok, but I dont like the fact that doesn’t have reverb ...anyway what you get for the money is great.

      @@winstonzendejas Very cool to hear that my advice helped! After reading my original reply and your comment I was thinking "man, I forgot to mention changing the tuners lol"

    I see a shit ton of people on here going "err well that amp is shit, this is shit, that is shit, etc." but in reality are you some big guitarist who's been doing this shit for years saying that these are shit compared to what you play on now, which would be something more expensive obviously. The point I see as someone looking to get into playing, is that these are a cheap way to dip your toes into the water, none of us beginners are willing to throw a ton of money at something diving head first into it when we aren't 100% sure that we'll stick with it. And no I don't mean "err this guitar doesn't sound the best, it's uncomfortable to play, etc." I'm talking about gaining the skill to play and keep working at it. Because at the end of the day if I get the hang of playing and get more into it, then sure I'll invest more money into it. I'm not looking to get the best of the best right off the bat. It's a cheap guitar of course it's not going to sound like some $1,000 or even $500 guitar. That's why they are cheap. It's not to play shows with, it doesn't have to sound the best, it's to learn on.

    • @orlock20
      @orlock20 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A Fender Mustang II costs $200 and an Omen 6 Schecter costs $300. That's $350 (when including cable, picks, stand, tuner and strap) more than the kit and if the person actually is into it, they won't have to upgrade if they get into it. If you get the guitar used (A local music store is selling one for $235) then the difference will be less.

      I know that solid state amp's artificial gain tends to not sound good to some people, but the clean stuff seems to always sound good at least on You Tube. The V1 and V2 models sound different.
      Are you sure is wasn't a Mustang I, because those have a 8" speaker and therefore would sound bad.

    • @elneutrino90
      @elneutrino90 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      orlock20 I don't know, but when I had to buy my own amp I was so traumatized from the mustang that I looked for an amp without effects because, as you said, the clean channel on the mustang sounded ok, it's just that every preset effect sounded REALLY cheap to me.

    My parents got me the Squier Affinity strat pack when I started learning in grade school. 10 years later, and having an Epi Les Paul and American Tele, my Squier is still a joy to pick up and play. She'll always have a place close to my heart. I may be biased, but the neck feels like it was designed for my hands, I learned so much on this guitar and been through so much with her.

    The most discouraging thing a new electric guitar player will face is setup. My first electric stayed in the closet because it wasn't intonated properly and I had no idea why it sounded so bad. I thought I was doing something wrong. It's worth it to get a pro setup and then find a teacher that will include that amongst their lessons.

      +Thomas Kirby long time ago.. I spent years as a little kid busting my ass trying to get songs to sound right and turned out my truss rod was completely loose and action was high. Sometimes it's better to go to an actual music shop and buy there. There is a big box instrument store here and they have a luthier inspect all guitars over a certain value and charge a minimum for anything "budget. That is good service.

      +Thomas Kirby It is not really hard to do a setup. At least a basic one (intonation and string hight). I never had a guitar teacher and when I started I had no problem doing a good setup myself. After 3 months of playing I leveled and crowned the frets and exchanged the pickups in my guitar without any help. There are plenty of good youtube videos on how to do all this luthier stuff, don't ever pay 60 bucks (its that much at my local store) for a complete setup or pickup exchange. A guitar is no rocket science, there is nothing to screw up.

    I started playing the guitar 6 months ago, on a cheap Elypse guitar, and a Marshall MG15DFX, wich is often referred as one of the worst Marshall amp ever... But, I had motivation, and I finally found that it's not really the gear you have that makes you a great guitar player : it's 50% motivation, and 50% work. I actually got the same level than my friends at playing the guitar, the difference is that they are playing since two years ago, and me only 6 month, but I had the motivation, and I improved my skills by playing more than 2 or 3 hours a day, everyday. This is why I think those starting pack are perfect for learning to play the guitar. Because if you stop after a couple months, it's not because of your "bad gear", but only because you had not the necessary motivation to become a great guitar player.

      agree completely and I have a similar story. I had a friend we don't really speak now cos we have different friends but anyway I used to admire his guitar talent and now even though I was learning through the older squier starter pack with the infamous sp10 amp although I upgraded to a blackstar ht1r anyway I now think I could near match him btw I've been playing guitar for a year and he's been playing for 5 years

    • @pikherz
      @pikherz 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Noctuaris12 Yeah but thats the point. Bad gear (hurting frets, bad intonation, bad amps) decrease your motivation. I ran my first guitar through an interface into my PC where I added a backing track to play over and tons of cool effects (reverb, delay etc.) and then through a big stereo system which I had. Didn't need an amp and had a much better sound than most beginner amps give you. And with a nice feeling guitar, a sick sound and backing tracks or someone to jam with (which you need a better amp for as well) playing daily is no pain at all. With this rubbish it definitely is.

    People shouldn't knock cheap guitars, i have many guitars one being a fender tele and one being a squire affinity strat and i can honestly say that the strat is one of my favourites to play. In my opinion i think they are designed to be partscasters for the buyer to do what they want, but they are also great stock

    After reading a few comments, I have to weigh in here.
    I am not a beginner, and I have owned a few guitars. My main guitar is one that some of the snobs here would certainly sneer at. It is just an '07 Squier Standard Stratocaster, but it is heavily modded. It was a good guitar to start with, but I eventually put a full size steel block and GFS Texas pickups in it, a 250k pot in both the volume and 1st tone position, and a TBX pot in the 2nd tone position (with a jumper).
    In the beginning of this year I purchased a Squier Affinity Tele Pack (BSB). I wanted a string-through, 22 fret Tele, and the Affinity Tele that comes by itself does not have those features (different guitars, from different factories). So, even though I didn't need an amp, or any of the other accessories, starter pack it was. The finish has a few minor flaws (you have to search to find them), and the pots were junk. But, the neck (where it really counts) is a work of art. All frets are level, with smooth edges. The action on this guitar was very good, right out of the box. The tone is... to die for. I had planned to change the pickups as soon as I got it, but these ceramic pickups are just fine. There is nothing about this guitar that should put off a student. It plays very well.
    About $10 to upgrade the pots, a little tweaking of the saddles, and this is one fine guitar. Sometimes you have to take what you got (or paid for), and make it work for you.

    I know from experience that those guitars sound great, but those little Fender Frontman amps are just terrible. Anyone considering this kit should totally go for it, but toss the amp and spend a bit of dosh on something even like a little Marshall MG. At least those sound somewhat decent compared to the Frontman.

    When my son was 9 I bought him a used Charvel (for the playability) and a Soldano 50w head with 2 12s Celestian cab (purple). Cost me $1500.00 US. Ten years later he was signed to a major US label with his own band. Get beginners good gear. Only the pros can make crap sound good, and if it doesn't sound good, then the difficulties and struggles of learning have no reward. Plus, if they change their mind you can sell the gear and get your money back - or make a profit.
    I'm a big supporter of Andertons and I even like their wacked videos with Chappers. But I don't agree with these amateur hour starter packs. Assume the new student is serious and show him or her your confidence. That confidence will help them over the hump.

      I started on an affinity pack. The amp was shit (Squier SP10), worse than the one in the video and everything that came with it was junky.. But the guitar itself was a real great guitar, and 16 years later with many modifications (pickups/tuners/nut) it's still a really really great guitar.
      You don't need to start with top end gear, a Squier affinity strat is more than good enough, budget guitars these days are really well made and light years ahead of the equivalent 30+ years ago. Just buy a decent amp, a decent lead instead of the turd in these packs and you're good.
      When I was around 19-20 around a decade ago I was also in a signed band touring and I started playing a month before I turned 15, am a professional musician to this day.

      A piece of advice. Get the new amp before you mod anything on the guitar. You will get more bang for your buck with a new amp compared to pickups. Im on a budget too thats why I buy old classic stuff used. Avoid guitar fetish and rondo like its the plague. Its low quality garbage. Changing the speaker on your current amp would have more of an effect on your sound than new pickups would trust me. Pups tend to be pups and unless your doing a drastic change like replacing a single coil with a humbucker, dont even bother. People get all pup crazy because its the easiest thing to mod on a guitar lol. The guitar you have isn't really that bad of a guitar and with some work can play as good as anything else does. I found a Fender Mustang V (The Amp Head) at guitar center (used) for 150 bucks. Buy the 4 button foot switch (50 bucks) and a volume/wah pedal, a decent cab your set for life amp wise. All for under 400 bucks. On the guitar itself, I'd just swap out the tuners, nut and bridge which can be done all for under 100. So for 500 bucks, you can have EVERYTHING you'll ever need with minimal mods and work. If you need new pickups, like those hot rail-esque pups you described, just buy Wilkinson or Mighty Mite versions of them for cheap. Good quality low price. Hope this helps.

    Parents: spend as much as you can afford for your kid to have a decent guitar to learn on. In general, these "starter packs" are total junk - and they will more than likely lead to your kid losing interest and quitting - because the action is too high or it can't be tuned properly, or won't stay in tune, etc. You get what you pay for.
    IMHO, I'd go into your local "Guitar Center" and see if you can find a really nice used guitar that's in "like new" condition - and save probably half off vs. what it would cost new - and be sure to have it professionally set up - so they can address any issues and make sure the action is right, etc.
    Unfortunately, I had to learn this lesson the hard way and I bought 2 el cheapo guitars that both had problems. As a newbie, I didn't know any better, and so I just chalked it up to me NOT being musically inclined and basically incapable of learning how to play because it "was too hard" - but, the whole time it wasn't me; it was my crappy junk guitars.
    It took me a 3rd attempt (years later) to finally buy a "nice" guitar (at Guitar Center) - and I immediately noticed - it made a HUGE difference. I bought it "used" - but in "like new" condition for $350. My particular Takamine acoustic/electric guitar (I called Takamine to find out) - it had an MSRP of $1,000, but they RETAILED in stores for $700 to $750. If you can find something in that price range for $350 - GO FOR IT. I also paid a little extra and had it "set up" by a pro & since that day I haven't been able to PUT IT DOWN. I've been playing almost 2 years on it, and for the amount of time I've put in, I'm amazed at how much progress I've made. A "nice" guitar will make you WANT to play. That's my advice, and I'm sticking to it!

    • @MaxRockatansky853
      @MaxRockatansky853 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You work for Guitar Center? Lol

    • @angelablackmore341
      @angelablackmore341 10 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      yes, this is true. However I started with a EXTREMELY cheap gixing acoustic, $30 and I never gave up. I think its more about wanting to learn more about on the instrument, and actually working up to a better guitar.

    • @CTChipmunk
      @CTChipmunk 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No I don't work for GC, but my local store has at least a hundred guitars on display - maybe even closer to 200 - it's crazy - like walking into guitar paradise. Plenty to hold in your hands & choose from.
      Not sure what a "gixing" guitar is?
      If you can afford to start out learning on something nice that is setup well with good intonation and good action that is easy to tune and generally STAYS in tune vs. something inexpensive that is hard to play, it could mean the difference between sticking with it or giving it up - a lesson I learned the hard way.
      However, you are certainly correct in that determination plays a role as well. You've got to WANT TO learn, regardless of what quality level of instrument you start out with. If you're determined though, you can avoid the catch 22 (beginner + cheap = setting up for failure) and skip the junk and go straight to something nice that will be EASIER to play and will INSPIRE you to learn.

    • @CTChipmunk
      @CTChipmunk 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      ***** That's my whole point. How can you develop "skill" without decent "material" to learn on?
      I've had 2 "starter" guitars, and both were all but useless - because of their intonation problems, high action, inability to tune properly or stay in tune, etc. A luthier would have charged me more than it's worth to try to make it playable, & also told me there was no guarantee. So, if you can find a good starter guitar that doesn't have or develop problems, then by all means - go for it.
      However, you get what you pay for. If you pay $100 for a guitar, don't expect much. The moment I bought a fairly "nice" guitar, my "skill" level improved exponentially. Obviously, no parent is going to spend several hundred on a guitar for a child, but therein lies the catch 22. Junk can = inability to learn on, which can = quickly giving up. I'm not saying a parent needs to spend a lot, but they do need to make sure it is playable and free of the problems mentioned above to at least give the child a fighting chance. From my own personal experience, a "cheap guitar" did not at all "encourage" me in any way. It only led to frustration & quickly losing interest. However, once I had a nice guitar - I didn't want to put it down.

    Actually buying a starter pack will cost you MORE in the long run because you will have to upgarde quite soon. Better quality equipment is more of a pleasure to play. Easier to play (guitar) and easier to get really satisfying sounds (amp) making you want to play more and therefore get better quicker. Experience speaks. My parents bought me a Kay electric new for £39 (OK 30 years ago) and a Satellite amp for about £20. Soon I bought a Gibson Les Paul and a Marshall JCM 800 50W combo, but that £60 wasted on the cheap stuff would have bought me a Cry Baby back then...

    I would argue that it is simply how well a player bonds with a guitar. Give a fantastic guitar player a guitar they do not like, do not want to play and fails to inspire them then it will come across. They may still sound great, but never 100%. Give a player a guitar they love the feel of and love to play then it will help them play their best.
    With this in mind, the price and brand of said instrument is not a factor in what a player decides they love or hate to play :)

    I got my Squier American Strat and a Marshall MG-10CD for $50 and it plays perfectly... stays in tune.. has amazing tone.. it has a Red Tortoise pickguard and it came with a case and a pick... I have no complaints. Plug in headphones and the sound quality increases to amazing.

      The Frontman 10G is a cheapass amplifier. You can make a starter pack Squier Strat sound fantastic if you plug it into a decent amp.

      I have a Mexican fretless Jazz bass and it's easily as nice as the American made Jazz bass I owned 30 years ago. Once setup properly it stays in tune, plays really smoothly and is worth every penny of the $300 I payed for it used.

    Squires are awesome! People just buy into the stereotype that they are cheap junky instruments. I have 2 squier strats and a signature bass that they sell, and an actual fender. I also have 2 epiphones 1of which is a signature model, a base model laguna, takamine explorer, and the orange guitar that came with the starter pack (Orange starter pack) my friend got as a novelty gift my favorite out of them all is my sunburst affinity, it's always been so comfortable to play, sounds just fine, and looks great. So don't let anyone talk you out of a squier they're actually wonderful pieces of equipment, you just gotta find one you like

    I prefer to get my stuff secondhand. My amp is a big ole Crate bass amp running 20 watts through a 10" woofer. My guitar is a 2005 Affinity Strat that I got used in really good shape for $99. Since buying it I put on heavy gauge flatwounds and a humbucker with a couple of switches. Works like a dream.

    Nobody, NOBODY ever deserves that amp, all of the disgusting Frontman line should be burned, whichever factory has been making these things should be burned also. Those things are repulsive, not even for a beginner. Many beginners may quit after using that shitty amp.

    PARENTS: don't ever buy these guitar packs for your kids! They are junk and are uncomfortable to play. If you are worried wether or not they will even want to continue playing, I promise that if you get them one of these, they won't. It will be uncomfortable for them to play and therefore be non enjoyable. If the guitar is comfortable they will enjoy playing it and get hooked. Spend the extra cash and get a decent guitar that your child finds comfortable. It's more than worth the extra money.

      Zé Nunes My first guitar was a Squier Bullet Strat, cheapest of the cheap, and its bloody awesome! All the hardware is unbelievably good quality and I think any issues with it feeling uncomfortable will be to do with how it is set up, I love how mine plays, awesome starter guitar!

    • @MrBingping
      @MrBingping 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      thanks for the clarification captain condescending. I said they are uncomfortable to play, not to hold. obviously I was referring to the playability of the instrument. for those of you who have affinity fenders, did you but them on there own or in one of the starter packs? im sure there are exceptions but all the ones ive played had uneven frets and the frets were very poorly dressed with sharp edges. and being that they are in a pack you are unable to really try them before purchasing. what im trying to say is don't just buy a guitar for your kid because its cheap. make sure it is comfortable to play. didn't mean to make you all butt-hurt.

    • @jamescook348
      @jamescook348 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      MrBingping Thanks for the reply! I was actually talking about how the guitar plays, not to hold. By set up I mean things like the action, intonation, bridge tension, truss rod etc. which all make the guitar more or less comfortable to play and are all repetitively easy to fix, and because all the parts on these guitars are fender sizes (albeit lower quality) it is very easy to swap them with higher quality parts if you want to (which I have on mine). Most parents may not play guitar so will not know what to look for, and I think they are much better going with one of the biggest names in guitars than an unknown brand of the same price because you are much more likely to get something good from Squire.
