    I still miss the old style of videos where you see more of the guys in the store actually going through the thought process of how they're gonna spend the allotted amount of Pounds, it might seem like waffling but it really was my favorite part, the comments about Top Gear for Guitars still stand today

    Andertons should sell 'starter pack' options based on something like a GP100 and a pair of headphones (you could call it the 'parent saver' or the 'flat dweller' pack) because it keeps the players sounds to themselves and allows more flexibility of sound. Later on, when upgrading, the player can then get the big amp without essentially adding to the worldwide pile of e-waste needing to be recycled as the effects can be taken on into the big rig.

    Nah, you BOTH nailed it!
    If the next step is more practice+fun time for yourself go Lee's route
    If your next step is to play with others right away go Pete's route
    There's no wrong here, if a learning musician can do both definitely make it happen!

  • @GitShiddy
    @GitShiddy 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

    Lee definitely nailed what I think the next logical step (hell the thing you should do instead of an amp in a starter pack) with the Valeton. When you're starting out you want/need to be exposed to everything possible. Every sound, every trick, every teaching tool, every opportunity to figure out how to get a sound to the point of finding your sound.

    • @RhizomaticAssemblage
      @RhizomaticAssemblage 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      Completely agree. Reality is that while Pete's strategy is excellent if you know what you want, if you've only been playing maybe 6 months you probably don't know what you want. Getting a decent little multi-FX that lets you play along with *every* song you like because you finally have the right effects, and shows you what all of them do, is super valuable. Once you know whether you even like certain effects, then you can consider buying specific individual pedals (or, indeed, a more expensive multi-FX if you prefer).

    • @smollande
      @smollande 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@RhizomaticAssemblagewhat Pete chose was possible due to maturity and experience. A young person who has been handed Petes package might still want Lee's multi effects unit. Because it's more fun exploring the different effects options. I never knew why I sounded like sht even after saving up for tons of pedals until later in life. It's an inevitable journey many have been through.

    Just a point on my experience from when I started learning the guitar and why I wouldn’t start with spending money on a new amp. I never practiced pugged in, I always played my guitar acoustically. Mainly because there was only so many times I could butcher heart shaped box until my parents asked me to knock it on the head. Unless you have a dedicated spaces using an amp just doesn’t really happen, at least in my experience. I would probably spend money on learning resources or lessons. If I was spending the money on the guitar then probably getting the frets dressed, and look at new tuners as tuning can be an issue with starter pack guitars.

    • @guyfawkes8873
      @guyfawkes8873 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      This is more of a tube amp issue. Back when I originally tried learning the guitar, I’d been a dummy and bought the absolute cheapest tube amp with good reviews I could get (a 79eur Peavey 5w)… which was a single volume amp… perfectly impossible to practice with if you wanted any kind of drive… and being a newb I obviously hadn’t bought a dirt pedal…
      I honestly think not having any idea about all of these issues is one of the things that pushed me towards the bass, where a clean quiet tone was absolutely fine. And definitely something that can still be a pitfall for new players blindly following guitartube advice…

    • @robinr22

      I play unplugged all the time and it's terrible for my playing - transitioning to an amp can be awful because you can't hear how crap you're playing when it's unplugged. If noise is an issue, use headphones. Or get a tiny practice amp.

    The single thing that can help a beginning guitarist, more than any new equipment, is time with someone who already knows how to play and is willing to pass on such knowledge for a modest fee. One of the few benefits of a fiat monetary system is that you can exchange little green pieces of paper for the tutelage of such a person.

    I've just had a look at that Eastman 35W amp (link above). There's a Send/Return on the back! The restrictions of using a looper before the pre-amp which Pete and Lee discussed do not apply. Just stick the looper in the FX return and and you can keep your loop just as you recorded it irrespective of changes you make for the overdub.

    • @stoneysdead689
      @stoneysdead689 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you do that- everything you play now runs through your looper and the sound quality is greatly reduced. If you have a higher end looper with a really high sample rate, so you don't lose much audio quality- you can do it. But they only just started making loopers of this quality tbh- and even using them, you still lose some of your tone. They simply cannot pass all the information through- you're going to lose some information.

    • @zebulon39u
      @zebulon39u 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@stoneysdead689 Thank you for your input, but I'm a bit puzzled as to what you mean when you say, "If you do that, everything you play now runs through your looper". Are you saying that if you put the looper in the Send/Return FX loop you are loosing more of the signal than if you have it before the amp, at the end of the pedal chain, as Pete is using it?

    • @stoneysdead689
      @stoneysdead689 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    • @zebulon39u
      @zebulon39u 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@stoneysdead689 Thank you. I didn't know this. Still, in the context of Lee and Pete's scenario I'm sure a play-at-home guitarist with just a few months of playing practice would be quite willing to trade off some signal loss for the pleasure derived from playing a clean backing track and then soloing over the top of it with some distortion, for example.

    • @stoneysdead689
      @stoneysdead689 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@zebulon39u Well, that's kind of the point- they can do that, and have great tone- just put the looper up front with an OD pedal in front of it. If you don't have an OD pedal- I guess it would suffice until you could get one.
      That said- this problem is quickly going away because of modelers. To make them sound right they had to keep going with higher and higher sample rates and more powerful processing- and that same technology is now used in loopers to make them sound better. They have loopers now that you can put in the fx loop, and you won't experience much loss at all- and it's getting better every day.

    I would say Lee won, with Pete a close 2nd. The bigger amp is great if you intend playing along with others, but if you're only 6 months into your guitar journey, you're probably still playing alone - listening on headphones or into computer. Experimenting with different sounds is fun and isn't that what we all want? The inclusion of drum sounds may be a bit 'cheesy' but it can replace the boring 'tik-tok' of a metronome. New Strings? For sure. Try going a lighter gauge - experiment and see what suits you.

    Can you do a video on how to get my strat whammy bar out of the middle of my radiator. Just rested it on the rad, and it fell down the slot, stuck half way down. Bugger.

    It's a bit of a fluke that I managed to tune this floating bridge 😅 I'll still sell it to you though... If you insist

    Lee won this hands down because when you start out you don’t know what you want and the Valeton exposes you to a lot of different sounds and effects. Why would you want to play loud when you probably sound really bad anyway? While as a parent I’d be happy to listen to my kid playing the same thing over and over even very badly but neither me or my kid probably wants to hear it super loud and cranked up. Plus as soon as you start playing better you are gonna’ want a better amp anyway.
