Graf using the same tactics we've also seen from Federer and Lendl against two handed baseliners. Using the short cross court slice to pull them from the baseline into no man's land, making them take one hand off the racquet and leaving them exposed. Then mopping up the weak shot with their forehand. It underlines how slice really can be used to wreck an opponent's game.
Lendl was a master at that. Especially against Connors. He played so much junkball slice to the Jimmy forehand that it left his best shot (his backhand) vulnerable. It also either forced Jimmy into errors on short forehands or gave easy backhand passing shot opportunities to Lendl.
@@encinobalboaNadal and Djokovic obviously all time great players. With Federer, the player I remember him tormenting most with his slice was Andy Roddick. Lendl used to drive Agassi and Courier crazy with his slice.
Thanks Kevin for posting these Graf matches. I love her game. The three winners in a row between 26:30 and 27:10 are amazing. Typically Graf style ! Would you have some more Mandlikova matches at the us open ?
Steffi Graf was such an elegant lady and player. What she did in 1988 ( Golden Slam), 1989, 1993, 1994 ( first four months), 1995, 1996, and 1999 is unheard of. Steffi is the best ever.
That's very arguable. A good bit of Graf's career benefited from the stabbing of her main rival, Monica Seles. In other words, it took an absent Seles for Graf's career numbers to increase into the upper echelon. Realistically, Graf would have ended up somewhere around Navratilova's and Evert's GS singles titles total of 18 (they tied), because everyone and their cat knows Graf would have at least 6 or 8 GS less in her final career GS singles total, had Seles never been stabbed (because Seles would have taken those from her, undoubtedly). For that reason, there should always be an asterisk by Graf's name (and Seles' name, too) in all tennis record-keeping. Graf also lags way behind in career pro singles titles (where too little focus is placed these days): Court 192 (though only 92 in the Open Era), Navratilova 167, Evert 157, Graf 107.
Disagree, not with a healthy Seles standing in her way. Seles won 2 of their last 3 meetings, and Seles was on her way up (was only going to get better), Graf on her way down (she had already peaked). Graf has been bumped to at least 4th on the GOAT list now (definitely behind Serena and even behind Court and Navratilova). There are even some purists who think she should be 5th, even WITH the Seles stabbing (since Evert proved to have much more longevity than Graf). And Graf only won her last GS singles title because Hingis choked, essentially giving Graf that French Open title (and Graf knows it).
@@fjosephgonzales6870 Seles profited more from the blackmailing of the Graf family than Steffi from that stabbing. 😂 Which 4 (!) slams would Steffi not have won? Say 5 since with Seles being in the draw Steffi most probably would not have had to play McNeill on a wet late afternoon in the first round of Wimbledon 1994 (Steffi won Wimbledon in 1991-93 and 1995/96!).

Steffi was on a mission in this match. She'd played Jennifer a couple of weeks earlier in an exhibition at Mahwah, and it went to thee sets. Steffi said she played that match like an exhibition (i.e. not seriously) and was amazed that all of the American media was making such a huge deal of the fact Jennifer won a set. She came out here wanting to show everyone what the result would be if she played seriously.
She did really well though in the beginning but then put too much pressure on herself to be the best too early and definitely couldn't handle it at that age. At least she ended up being really good though, giving any player, even Serena trouble. Hall of Famer!
@Illya Kuryakin one of the major problems she had was how her youth had essentially been sold to the highest bidder. She'd signed some ridiculous sponsorship deals (Oil of Olay at the age of 13???) And they really started to pressurise her to win grand slams and become number one. Given that she was in an era with the likes of Graf and Seles, that was never gonna happen at that age. It's no wonder that she went off the rails.
1990 and 1991 were not good years for Steffi. She played pretty conservatively this year and lost her edge, I think. (She also faced pretty good opponents in Sabatini, Sanchez-Vicario, and Seles!). The Steffi of 1993-96 would have easily beaten this Steffi.
Stephen Michaels I agree with you. After a Golden Slam in 1988, Steffi managed to stay dominant throughout 1989, despite losing her French Open crown during that year. Unlike what most people believed, Monica Seles was not the reason for Steffi's downfall during this period of slump. She still regularly got into the finals and semifinals of slams and other big tournaments, but she was constantly losing to the players that she has previously dominated or found a way to defeat (like Navratilova). I think she suffered a burn out of sort after winning everything in 1988. But I liked the way she rebuilt her career. The key to her 1995-1996 success is by finding a way to regularly defeat the 2 Spaniards (Arantxa and Conchita). Injuries, not Martina Hingis, then took its toll on her. In fact she lost more times to Amanda Coetzer during those period than she did to Hingis. Steffi could have been the greatest had she not decided to retire in 1999. I know Lindsay, Venus and Serena pretty much reign early 2000, but you should never discount Steffi especially at the Wimbledon and French Open. By the way, Steffi actually took the struggling Jennifer under her wings in 1999. Helping her to get on her feet after her drugs and other personal problem, regularly trained with her too.
Stephen Michaels I always thought one of her biggest issues in 1990 was her sinus problems (I think she had surgery on them that year) and also the way her groundstrokes changed. When she came back from her broken thumb injury, she was leaning in on her groundstrokes more and hitting them closer to her body. Her backhand became much softer and floatier IMO. She finally corrected that at around early 1995 if memory serves me. But that's not to take away from the meteoric rise of Seles or the improvement of Sabatini.
I think in retrospect, the media was unfair to Stefano Capriati. I mean you hear him speak and you see him talk to Jennifer and all I see is a gentle teddy bear. In fact, it’s always Jennifer who is the one who scowls or snaps at her father. I’ve never seen Stefano verbally abuse or even scold Jennifer.
Just because he wasn't mean to his daughter, doesn't mean he didn't fail her in other ways. He was part of having her do more commericals, even went out of his way to act as her agent and get her even more and more exposure. This also added to ramping up the pressure on her, and he went to press conferences and built up her chances for tournaments, as if the media weren't putting enough pressure on her already. This also led to her mental collapse when she stayed stuck as 6th, 7th, 8th in the world behind the "big 5) of Graf, Seles, Sabatini, old Navratilova, and Sanchez, and kept getting increasingly frustrated by her total ownage by the Graf/Seles/Sabatini trio especialy (Seles and Sabatini she atleast got a few wins over, she is a horrific 1-10 lifetime vs Graf, lol). There was no much hype built up for her to win slams and even reach #1, some of it fueled and added onto by her father who worked behind the scenes to up her hype and exposure even more, that when she didn't reach that as a teenager she subsequently collapsed and was pretty much of the game for a good 6 years.
He ultimately put her into such a toxic, destructive environment at such a young age. He allowed her to have huge pressure put on her by sponsors, simply for money. He effectively sold his teenage daughter's wellbeing for cash.
She said some time after the match that she'd had a real attack of nerves before the match, and that she was so disappointed afterwards that she didn't leave her hotel room for days.
