When I used to get packages I would remove I believe half the frames from the hive. Put the queen caged on one of the frames and put the whole package in where the frames use to be. Then come back the next day remove the empty package and put frames back in.

You should put your queen cage horizontal instead of vertical so if any thing blocks the hole she can still get out. A spray bottle with sugar water to spray the bees will help with the temperment to keep them busy. I haven't done any packages for 6 years when I first started.

Can I suggest placing the queen cage parallel to the frames with the screen facing down. That way the bees can feed her and if a bee dies in the cage, won't block the escape hole.

If you like to fish for bluegills with crickets, the empty package makes a great cricket cage. You just need to attach a lid of some sort. Give food and water and you can store them for a week or better.

When I installed one of those I just tore the screen off one side to make the job a lot easier. I was able to tap the bees out easily. Also I used the strap you yanked off the 1st queen cage and tacked it over the top of a frame to hold the queen cage in since I had no drawn comb. I put a queen excluder between the deep box and the bottom board until they drew comb and had eggs to prevent them from absconding my combless box.

did 20 of those cans 2 weeks ago, they all were a bugger, you did fine. Glad to see some youth in the game. You handled yourself very well, my daughter is prolly twice your age and would be complaining for a week is she got one sting from my bees and she never helps in the yard. They used to have a thin metal strap in place of the that black plastic strap, that metal was nice to bend into a clip to hang the queen cage from the frames. If you aint keeping those empty packages, wack on one side, cut the screen with your hive tool on three sides and dump. Much better that trying to shake everyone through the middle hole. Good job

Natalie, a funny but gut wrenching video to watch. As a seasoned beekeeper, meaning an old one, a father of an independent daughter, who I am very proud of, and the grandfather of her own daughters, It is always hard to just let them be. To watch as they experience an undertaking by themselves so that they can grow up and learn from their own mistakes. I would say so much here that could of helped you with this but can't. It is a humourous lesson in Murphy's Law. The performance in which if anything that could go wrong will go wrong. :) Good luck! 🐝

Usually if you turn the package upside down and give a little shake, the can will move out enough to get a grip. Spray or splash the bees through the screen with sugar syrup first and then you can just shake them out. Also you can use a wire or bread tie , twist around the queen cage and hook over the top of a frame to suspend cage. Make sure cage is positioned so that a dead attendant won't block exit hole. Sometimes it's helpful to make a small hole through the candy with a nail if candy is hard, or release her manually if she's not out in 3 or 4 days.

Natalie, you a beast! Sticking yer hand down in there like that was absolute beast mode!
I/people learn as much or from vids like this than if you are perfect’.
Ive transferred a number of packages over the years. It seems like any method works as long as the queen is in the hive where you want the bees.
    Well done!! Love yer growth!

    Natalie,
I do not use packages much anymore, but the easiest way I have found to get the can out is to use duct tape to stick to it and pull it out

  • @joeallen7037
    @joeallen7037 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

Let me give you my experience with packages. Turn the package upside down to remove the can, just let the can out enough to hold it. Turn the package back over. Bump the package down to make the bees fall to the bottom then remove the queen, place the piece of wood back over the hole. I've found you dont need to place the queen between the frames. Simply lay the queen cage on top of the frames on it's side or face up. Place a deep brood box on and lay the package on the frames on it's side. This prevents dead bee's from going on the frames below. The next day, you can remove the package and 3 or 4 days later they will have let the queen out and you can remove the empty brood box. My experience consists of keeping bees since 1970.

Thank you for sharing that mate , many new bee keepers would more than likely as in this video be doing it all wrong not knowing how to go about it , I myself have never used package bees , I bought a established hive when I started 25 years ago and collected swarms and make splits etc , never needed packaged bees but maybe someday I might try one and see how that goes . 👍

I LIKE the videos once in a while that have natural learning curves and humor and bloopers included!
So couldn't you leave the queen cage attached to the box with the strap and let it dangle down in between the space of a removed frame until they queen leaves? The bees would follow her out.
HOW in the world can you reach into bees and tolerate the stings? THAT IS IMPRESSIVE!! But then, I've never worked with bees.
