I use one of my radio controlled locomotives to tow the vacuum cleaner wagon. This allows full power to the cleaner and very slow track speed to maximise dust lift. Regards, Tom.
Seeing so many trains running at once, figure it must be a DCC layout. Could you not program xtrakcad with a route for the cleaning train and also put the other locos into sidings ? Given the size of the layout, it would be quite a technical endavour, but at the same time, would ensure amazingly good running of such a massive and complext layout. Very nice work - hoping to get back into N/Z gauge again soon, but I enjoy your layout, its gorgeous.
On the top level I have digital boxes that allow 2 trains on one line. Each loco has a magnet that tells the box which section it is on and the faster train is stopped if it catches up
Philip, so when IPA was recommended it wasn't India Pale Ale..... 😄 It is a slow task although the Dapol vacuum cleaner is very effecting (only use mine in vacuum mode). 🙂 CMX cleaner is interesting but would sadly foul the conductor rail on Ewhurst Green. Suspect the wire retaining clips might also foul the scale-dimensioned platform faces so some modification to the wagon might be needed. 🤔 Just trialling a track cleaning wagon from Ten Commandments - it looks to be most promising. 👍 Used to have a Finney & Smith wagon wheel cleaner although most stock is undertaken by hand using a regular regime across the all-metal-wheel layout. 😎
Very clever locomotives
Thankyou. play on Friday morning?
Yours is one heck of a rail layout..
It just seemed to grow every year
Great video Philip and thats a smashing set up for track cleaning, all the best, bob .
Thankyou. Kind regards, Philip

That would be a better way of doing it, one day
Happy to share my experience of doing the conversions if/when the time comes.
Thankyou
Wish I could afford that method of track cleaning as it looks very effective...shame it's so expensive!
I had no choice but to shell out for the CMX because of the inaccessable track

I am DC only. I have 12 controllers on 12 circular loops, which can be made into one singular track. Kind regards. Philip
@@model.train.railway. wow, thats still quite something running all those trains on block segments ! thanks for the insights to your layout.

That must take hours and you do do it a lot quicker with your cleaning wagon
I have so much track and so many difficult to reach corners, it is the only way to clean it.

I have been a bit slack with cleaning the wheels. A retirement project for September.
@@model.train.railway. Given the amount of stock you have running is that not a retirement project for September, October, November, Dece...... 😂
How true
@@model.train.railway. It is a problem of which I'm also all too aware...... 😺
That’s a huge, essential task but at least you can run the other trains at the same time. How often do you need to clean the track?
Good point, I never said. Once a year for some tracks and longer for others.
That makes it manageable at least!
I normally leave it until the trains start stuttering. I should really clean more often.
That's quite a task you have. How often do you need to do that ?
Once a year for some tracks and less often for others depending on if the the locos have traction tyres. Thanks, philip
