Exploring an abandoned subdivision in West Central Florida known as Hillside Estates, a housing project. The project consists of 90 units built in the 1970s. According to media sources, several past board members of the Brooksville Housing Authority were misusing funds provided to them by the U.S. Housing and Urban Development as well as not following policy guidelines. They couldn't afford to keep up with the ongoing maintenance and repairs to the homes forcing the residents to relocate with rental vouchers. Because only so many vouchers could be released at one time, there was a staggered exodus from the properties. The residents starting moving out in September of 2012 with everyone expected to be gone by December 2012. Below is a link of one of the news articles that paints more detail:

Kevin Letterman The place wood look like a GHETTO if "economically disadvantaged" people moved in. In 2 yrs it would look like a toilet! I would rather let the whole subdivision burn down, than move in the scum of the society. I am not saying everyone is, just the MAJORITY, unfortunately. You can and should not move in animals in nice houses until they are forcibly civilized. Amen.

I take your point but have to say please dont insult animals .No animals steal funds , none do drugs and are scum .......There is a guy waiting somewhere to do a land deal .How do I know ? Just lived and viewed such a deal in Berlin .....

HelenaMikas I love animals! As a matter of fact, I am continuously taking stray cats to ASPC to be implanted with chips and for shots. Land deal? So, this is again about the "bad rich people"? I like rich people,at least most of them. If there were no rich people, who would employ the masses? Mom and pop businesses usually pay minimum wages, not the "bad rich people".

Exactly, convert each duplex to single family unit, sell each for $20-40k cash sale or $60k with a 15 year fixed rate ez qualifying mortgage and have a conditional sales clause that forbids renting of property. The format has worked well in other areas. It removes the public assistance aspect from the equation and creates pride of ownership.

We would have to do a3 year long study to determine if people would be happier homeless or inside, at a mere 250k per year, paid to another government employee, which is why nothing ever gets done. So many easy solutions here for this unnecessary waste of money.

KIMBERLY VERA I agree, we seem to just accept this type of bs and yell at our screens but not at the powers that be. I’m on the verge of being homeless, I live right outside NYC with my 2 adult kids who work hard. Rent for a 2 bedroom apartment is a minimum of 2,500/month, some are as high as $3,800/month. We are dying to just get out, this is no way to live and I’m disabled and can’t afford a roof without my kids chipping in. It’s maddening. Then this! What we wouldn’t give to have shelter we could afford. But who am I to bitch? All the homeless vets, the elderly, the poor who have no family, it’s just heartbreaking.

My friends and I drove into subdivision last week and we were shocked to see it empty. The only reason why developers aren’t jumping on this property is because it’s not in a ritzy part of Florida. There are so many battered women and children, homeless and veterans that could use a place to lay they’re heads. My heart bleeds. I really don’t understand. People only pretend to care if it will put a profit in their pockets.

I've been here for 3 months now, working, saving up for a place with my girlfriend. I'd kill to live in a house like this, even if it meant relocating to Florida. I'm sure many of the vets here feel the same way. Thanks for the video and hope everyone is staying safe out there with this virus spreading around. We just started a 2 week quarantine. Cannot leave the building we stay at. I share a room with 4 other vets, 5 of us to a room that's about 25' x 15'. If I could have the opportunity to live in a place like this, I'd fix it up and it would be beautiful 365 days of the year!

***** Cheers, there's so many homes left abandoned like this in the USA. Some homes are left abandoned because the owners die or can't afford the crazy property taxes, then the government takes over ownership, from then on, they don't take care of them, then they get so run down that not even a street bum would want to live in them. This is actually "littering" and contamination of the earth's soil -- these houses turn into garbage. If they want to take the houses from the people that owned them, at least take care of them, or tare them down and clean up the land for someone else to build on. In this we have a perfectly good subdivision, and bums left on the street. The problem with the USA is, the government "leaders" put their military over their own citizens, and the citizens should come first. If they want to treat their homeland like a dump, I think citizens should go and dump their garbage there - maybe then they'll get the hint. It's a shame, I'm Canadian and I think the USA is a very beautiful country with an abundance of beautiful natural resources, then I see this -- it's sickening what "greed" will do.

Also 327 Union St which also had the ramps and everything. we were forced to move because we were under the impression that there was gonna b new houses built there. well turns out that was a lie. I grew up in that neighborhood. everyone was friendly, we all knew each other, and we helped each other any way we could. we had a boys and girls club that helped babysit students after school and provided them with hw help and snacks. we also gave out full bag meals over the summer to those who didn't have anything to eat in that neighborhood.

I am a "homeless" veteran living in western Massachusetts.I live at the VA up here with 65 other "homeless" veterans.

I wish I could do more to help but I am barely getting by myself. If it weren't for faith in God I'd probably have done something very stupid by now. I pray you find strength & hope through prayer. God WILL give you the graces you need to continue your difficult journey, and thus overcome homelessness. God Bless you!

    • @bhalps
      @bhalps 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

If a house isnt taken care of in the florida sun, heat and humidity ts ruined in three or four years. Mold, asbestos remediation, plumbing, new electric, duct work, foundation work, roofing, heating and Ac, all have to be brought up to code and repaired. And the code has changed significantly since the 70's. Flood zones have shifted significantly too, requiring higher insurance and raised buildings - big expenses. Also its not about the concrete, its about the replacement cost compared to the cost to repair. Lastly you hear a ton of people here saying let homeless people live there, its still liveable. Maybe so, but it has to be a certain standard to allow people to live there, even the homeless. The narrator states that the previous owners couldnt afford the repairs. Projects like this fail all the time once it gets too expensive to maintain, thats why be build new ones.

Mickey Mouse, The good thing is that we were surrounded by people who understood our oddities and shared very similar life views. In the 1960s through 1970s most of the military bases were meticulously tidy. Base housing was inspected monthly by the base commander. We were expected to have no brown patches on the lawn and it was not unusual to see a neighbors dad dressed in his uniform and spray painting any brown patches on the lawn to a nice camo green, The morning of inspection. I don't know if the base commander was onto them.

I've heard stories that the land is toxic I've also heard that the development was built over a Black Mass cemetery of unmarked Graves. Whatever the case maybe something must be going on because there have been several developers that have attempted to purchase the land and have been rejected one way or another just recently it was supposed cleared away and a upscale retirement 55 + community of manufactured homes was supposed to take over the property. But that has also fizzled out to this day. It remains extremely very scary place to go at night.

If you don’t pay your taxes and the house has just been sitting there rotting away the city will take it over, either fix it up or knock it down .As far as housing like the one’s you showed us, they constantly maintain them. Thanks for the tour. Great job Pam!

AbandonedSC Thanks, Jason! I thought that was strange about there being no bathtub as well. It must have been for someone in a wheelchair as you say. I hope all is well.

***** The last two places I've lived have had walk-in showers like that. Some are better than others lol. They're good for folks who have trouble raising their legs to get in and out of a tub.

Interesting First time I've seen one but a good idea most people these days don't use tub anyway

My complaint here is that the walls have no place to put one's shampoos, soaps, etc.

TraditionalHymns Yeah, I guess you'd have to buy one of those shower caddies that plunge onto the side of the wall or hang from the shower head. I don't even think the medicine cabinet opened. But maybe I was trying to open the wrong side. : /

Hi tikitrex. I'm slowly watching all your videos as you've done so many which all I'm enjoying but this one you've done is fascinating! It's great to see that not much has been done in vandalism and it's still like as its been left. Where I live in the uk there ain't nothing like this. It seems like such a waste! Another brilliant video, thanks!!

Shame slip-shot construction made those homes unlivable, this sort of thing happens in Florida from time to time.
Thanks again Pam for another trip to the forgotten corners of our world!

Awesome Tiki; it's as if there a sleeping community; if you we're to drive up to it, you would think that everyone is asleep there, the property looks like the grounds are being kept up and the trees looks manicured...it's a shame that there is available space and so many homeless people in the world...great video.

    Just something to consider.
I think everybody that explores abandoned houses to have somebody with them.
