If you're planing on traveling than Icelqnd is the place! Hands down... Some facts about iceland (i didn't watch the whole video so i have no idea if some of them are in the video). 1: its actually not as cold as you think it is. On spring and summer, you will have to get of those Anti_Frost-Super-Heat-Clothes that you prepared before the trip because its literally hot as Balls! Also, don't expect much cold on winter because its actually not that cold :-). Well... sometimes its freezing. 2: This place... is so peaceful, that you don't have to worry about ANY crime! :D. 3: *Random Fact* Iceland is bigger than denmark though denmark has millions of people but iceland only 300k+. This is because of the mountains blocking most part of iceland. 4: There are quite alot of earthquakes here but don't worry! We icelanders are highly prepared by specially building the houses so these pesky earthquakes won't affect us. :-) hope i caught you're mind there. Oh yeah one more thing
PACK YOURE BAGS CAUSE NO DARN MOSQUITOS HERE!
Trust me with all those facts cause im icelandic :-).

I can imagine you're proud at the country. One fact nolonger stands: the highest number of broadband internet users has been The Netherlands for some years and today Finland/Suomi is number 1.But let's not split hairs, it indeed is a beautiful country. I had a question as well if that's okay? Do Icelanders see themselves as Europeans/part of Europe, or just mainly Icelanders? Since it is sofar away from the mainland.

    Fun facts about iceland
    1. Heating and electricity (hot water from tap, shower and heating houses) is around 40-50 dollars a month.
    2. One of the first countries in the world to happily allow gay marriage.
    3. Cold water is free.. you just turn the tap on.
    4. Shower.. you could have a 400 hour long hot shower.. you never run out of water ;)
    5. We have a crazy ammount of movie theaters
    6. yeah.. we have the internet and we know what Netflix and Hulu is.. stop asking.
    7. the Yule lads are 13. Kids put a homemade shoe in the window of their bedroom 13 nights before christmas. And every night if they behave well enaugh, they get some treats (chocolates, whatever). If they misbehave, they get a potato.
    8. Christmas dinner in iceland is mostly pork roast or lamb with caramelized potatoes, green beens, red cabbage and creamy mushroom or red vine sauce. Also we eat gamier foods like Grouse, with apple salad and creamsauce.
    Just some facts.

There isn't much of ANYTHING, but in some areas in Summer, you have these incredible seas of gnats. I was pretty surprised when one day horse trekking I was in seven layers of clothing and a careful net around my head. The horses are quite used to any and have unusual, adapted noses, "different" eyes, they can handle them. You get to a point where you become accustomed to the intense silence, and if you even hear a rare bird, it's kind of a shock!

Question: How does Iceland resemble Ireland's "Culture" ?
Dublin a.k.a. "Dark Pool" was settled by Vikings only after they
spent years raping, pillaging, & Killing The British Isles. It was only until
Erin was united by the last High King of Ireland, Brian Boru, that The
Irish kicked their Asses & Sent them back to Iceland/Scandinavia.
The Brother of Brian Boru, Wulf "The Quarrelsome" was such a
Bad Ass that his charging The Norse Rank, Alone & pushing them back
even made worthy mention in Icelandic Saga ! There's proof
The Irish (St. Brendan The Navigator) made it to The Americas long before Leif Ericson.

    • @CuteCatFaith
      @CuteCatFaith 10 ปีที่แล้ว

There were Irish monks here over a thousand years ago. Unfortunately, they used their farming methods and the land can't take it -- that's a very fragile, volcanic ecosystem. The Vikings, too ... the introduction of their domestic animals and their native agricultural methods was highly destructive. It's bad enough getting the occasional volcano blast, but they have to be very careful, build up the land, watch their methods.

I am nuts about Iceland. It's usually my choice of countries to move to if I leave France, where I moved to from the USA long ago. I think a lot of Americans would FREAK OUT about life in Iceland! I don't think they could endure the prices, "doing without," the harsh climate, and how hard you must work, often on short-term contracts.

    • @pythagreon

    • @CuteCatFaith

      pythagreon
Dual US and French. It now costs 450 USD to renounce citizenship in the US. I'm just about at retirement age and contributed to their system for decades and I think it's disgusting they charge now to renounce. You used to be able to declare, turn in your passport, free. Sinking ship, the USA. I was lucky to get out, but I saw the writing on the wall in the '80s. Someone told me Iceland is EFTA, not EU, and when I was there, were I to ask to be a citizen there, I would have had to be "only Icelandic." But it's still a thought. I do like it, and think I could be good there, for me and for their country. I've learned enough to know what I'd have to do to contribute and help there. I've also learned some of the language, on my own, since. I always keep it as a Plan B. It's important to integrate and contribute, help out and be good when you are an immigrant. Otherwise, you can just visit and be responsible and nice in another place. Not mess them up and have a good time. :)

Thank you for the reply. I'm just wondering how hard it is to emigrate. I have entertained the idea of moving to Iceland, but I don't know what all the requirements and limitations are. I'm sure every country is different and I have tried to look up information, and it sounds very difficult to do.

    • @CuteCatFaith

Yup. I suggest you try on the TravelAuteurs channel the interview with me from early this year, LISA FALOUR'S BIZARRE EXPAT EXPLOITS. It's about 45 minutes long. I was in Iceland in '01 and only had a business dealing with their government a year later. Since then, their requirements may have changed. And I discuss in the long telephone interview how France is not uniform -- they say they are, but it's not so. I talk about a definitive source of information not being available anywhere -- they often quickly become obsolete, and ... well ... France is not uniform. I think you'll enjoy the interview! You can also just telephone the capital city Icelandic city hall or whatever, during their normal business hours, having the courtesy to not phone during what might be their lunch time midday (most countries appreciate this effort) and ask. They are quite direct and efficient, I have found. A phone is easy to use. I think you'll like Rich's interview with me. He did a nice job adding some of my photos. Good luck!

Just take note, in case you want to visit here, the healthcare is suffering a rapid decline in quality and is starting to resemble the one in America before Obamacare, Also we have our share of greedy fat cats here as well, if you come here as a tourist prepare for dozens of businesses trying to take your money away in exchange for mediocre service, although some services are excellent from what I hear. Oh, I almost forgot, the nature here is beautiful but treacherous, I'd say per year on average about 2 or 3 tourist die or get lost in the wild in treacherous conditions . So don't wander alone up some mountain or off designated hiking routes, even if it's tempting and the weather is pleasant, you'll just spend the time and money of the volunteer driven rescue service which most likely will not find you until you're dead if at all. You might just fall down a deep crevice.
P.S. If you do visit here, you must try Hákarl and Ice cold Brennivín

    • @Top10Archive
      @Top10Archive  10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Thank you for that in-depth reply! That was really informative, and you defiantly paint a different picture than what I showed in the video! I would never of guessed your healthcare was declining, but I guess it only takes a few corrupted fat-cats to ruin it for everyone.. America feels the pain on that one.. what is Hákarl and Brennivín made from?

Also, it were the Icelanders that wrote around the 13th century the Eddas, the main source of the myths of the Norse mythology we have today. If it weren't for the Icelanders the world might have forgotten the great stories of the Norse mythology. Thanks forever for that, Iceland!!

I have always been fascinated by Iceland, the landscape, the history, the sagas etc. One pedantic point though, there is no such thing as free healthcare or education anywhere. Yes maybe it is free to the end user but it still has to be funded for by tax income or by philanthropic acts. As always I am happy to be proven wrong as that's how I learn.

Just to let people know, the Norse concept of elves is completely different to ours, elves are the symbols of great people in Icelandic history who would prbably dwell in these natural features. So the roads are moved as a sign of respect to not disturb them.
