Most widely used and economical method of hay storage is hay stacking or hay bundle making. This is an effecient way to minimize extra cost and a good way to manage the large quantities of hay.

There are different methods of hay making.
    1.field drying
    2.hang with the rope
    3.stack by using three bamboos
4.drying after chaffing the forage and spreading it on the floor.

In this lecture we learnt about hay making and Storage. Hay shouldn't be stored until it is dried completely. Because wet hay may encourage mould growth and may also ferment. Hay can be stored by creating hay stacks and hay can be staked in stores.

In Hay Making, During Storage, Respiration ceases at about 40°C but action of thermophilic bacteria may go on up to about 72°C.
Above this , Chemical Oxidation Cause Heating which leads to combustion in hay stored in bulk.

Leaves are more nutritious so we should take leaves part as much as we ca.n. but the problem here is that leaves are brittle and shattered easily. great care should be taken. we can go for heat treatment.

  • @AbdulMajid-cg6ni

Leaves are more nutritive than stems so better cutting more leave part and less stem part. Barn drying( blowing hot air through forage) can give us good quality hay but is expensive. while storing the hay shouldn't be wet or it will encourage moulds and fermentation. Mouldy hay is harmful( contains mycotoxins). Sun light is beneficial in removing ergosterol of plants.

    * Due to over drying shattering of leaves can occur.
    * At 40% moisture leaves start shattering.
    * Moisture of good hay should be less than 15%
    * IN STORAGE-- If wet hay is stored there will be mould growth and also fermentation can occur. Due to fermentation heat is produced which can lead to fire.
    * IN RAPID DRYING--- in late stages due to respiration thr loss of hexoses can occur and the cell wall components are increased.

We have discussed hay making processes ;field drying and barn drying in detail, storage of hay, chemical changes and losses during drying and storage and preservatives. DM loss is more in field (13.7%) than in bale (5.6%). Feeding should be done first with Sheep and goat as they are selective feeders(mostly nutritious part) and the rest of stem part can be fed to large livestock.
