  • While Emanuel Ax's career as a performing artist occupies most of his time and attention, he has managed to balance his concertizing with teaching. In this video, we see Ax greeted by one of his former students - tonebase Artist Louis Schwizgebel - who asks him via recorded video a question about practicing Beethoven's 'Emperor' Concerto.
Ax - delighted to see one of his most talented and accomplished students - proceeds to give insights on approaching the opening of the third movement, as well as the transition that precedes it. He describes how Busoni used to change his body language at that moment for dramatic effect, leading to a conversation on concentration and structural interpretation in piano interpretations - particularly those of Maurizio Pollini.

What a grateful, generous, fine, humble, brilliant man!! Notice how he gives acknowledgment to all his mentors and idols for the beauty he can produce for the concerto. He doesn't say ME ME ME...but we know that it IS him!

So convivial and humble, but let’s call it as it is, Manny has made a very impressive evolution in his 60s. Always wonderful when musicians evolve in their late phase.

I am not a musician but I love music, I love this concerto and I love Emanuel Ax. This long introduction to say that, as important as the doubts he has as how to play certain notes in the third movements, he could play them either way and this wouldn't change anything to my love for this music and the way he plays it.

I've just learned I'm three degree of separation from Maestro Ax. In my school of the arts days I had a friend and colleague who studied with Fleisher, who I now know performed with Ax and gave him a playing tip. I like Mr. Ax's idea of an offstage mystery pianist during a transition in the Emperor, and his self-effacing quip volunteering to be that pianist during Mr. Schwizgebel onstage performance. :)

Is it commonly held that studying with ABM constricted Pollini’s talent? I’ve heard this idea before.

The answer to the dynamic "P" (piano) he mentions is simple : a slight diminuendo into that downbeat. To be effective musicially and natural pgysiclaly, that is the way to play it. By the way, part of the answer is in... the left hand...

Once saw Ax perform the Beethoven 5th in Birmingham. UK . It was awful ! Main reason I think was the piano was out of tune.
