Extremely well done video, Jared. Most comprehensive review on the Royole Moon to-date. Whether paid advertising or not, your comments are very helpful. I've owned my Moon for a couple years now (bought it new on eBay for $275 USD FYI). There are a few things people should know about them:
1) This is NOT a VR headset. It cannot play VR SBS files or apps but you CAN side-load digital movie files onto the 32GB on-board harddrive.
2) The graphics for the Moon are genuinely marvelous. I don't know anything about optic specifics like Jared, but I have an Oculus Go (720dpi) and an Oculus Quest 2 (1080dpi) and can say unequivocally the movie watching experience in a Moon is SUPERIOR in every way - and built-in stereo surround sound is always a plus.
3) 3D movies typically must be watched via HDMI connection to a 3D blu ray player and pressing the "2D/3D" button on the bottom of the Moon. And the experience is VERY immersive, despite some posters' comments here. Side-loaded 3D SBS files, however, will not work properly in the Moon. It must be a native file to the blu ray.
4) You CANNOT wear corrective lenses inside the Moon - unlike most VR headsets with "spacers". You either go without glasses and adjust the very forgiving manual eye adjustments, or wear contacts, or (like me) figure out how to attach/tape/glue a set of prescription lenses directly to the Moon...
5) If you have Astigmatism, you CANNOT view the Moon properly without corrective lenses. PERIOD. In my case, I bought a cheap online prescription for my computer glasses, broke out the frames, and velcroed the lenses directly onto the Moon. Works like an absolute DREAM now! Sucks to have to MacGyver an $800 set of glasses, but sometimes you have to make some adjustments. -- For those wondering which "far-sighted" or "near-sighted" prescriptions work best... the answer for me was: computer distance is the correct prescription. Not sure where that falls in an optometrist's chart but when I ordered "distance" glasses and also tried my readers (I have multi-tiered vision unfortunately), I found out that my "computer" glasses worked best with VR and Moon glasses FYI.
6) Battery life is slightly less than two hours, no matter what anyone says. And the "box" DOES get hot while charging. That said, it isn't gonna catch on fire if you're plugged into a battery pack - although I've never been on a plane with one so be careful (hopefully your charger isn't a Samsung phone battery pack...). I plug mine into a 12-hour battery pack and can watch five full-length movies if I wanted to before a recharge. That said...
7) "Eye strain" IS a very real thing with the Moon. Unlike my Oculus Quest 2 where I can play for two hours straight, take them off, and walk around the room like nothing happened. With the Moon, if you are watching for more than 15 mins, you WILL have a bit of "drunken vision" for a few mins until your eyes re-adjust. EVERY TIME. It must be due to the total black immersion of the lenses which makes watching a film awesome but the after-effects a bit wobbly.
8) The size of screen CAN be adjusted down but by minimizing it, you may as well watch your big screen TV. The point to these kinds of glasses is to see it as big as possible. That being said, with the screen being it's largest, I lose the top corners of the screen and the curved vision can blur slightly on the outside edges. Not distracting but something to be aware of.
9) Is it worth the price? At $800, the simple answer was "no". Like Jared said, it's a luxury item. And wearing it on a plane is an easy way to get mugged since you really are cut off from the rest of the world while immersed. However, if you can find it on eBay NEW(!!!! - NEVER buy used electronics on eBay), you can probably find it for closer to $250-300 range which is more manageable and worth every penny of an original Oculus Quest.
10) Comfort while wearing the Moon is luxurious. ESPECIALLY while laying back in a recliner or flat in bed. UNLIKE my VR glasses that don't really adjust vertically while laying down. But, like I said above, it WILL isolate you from the world Putting my Moon on while laying in bed is really awesome - unless someone breaks into your house and robs you blind while you obliviously watch a movie. ;-)
Hope this helps! :)
Wow dude amazing review 👍
I just found this device on ali express and wanted to check if they actually worth something. There it cost about 205$. did you tried and vr or pc game on it?
Nice thoughts. This oculus have android os? Its possible to install Netflix, max, youtube, Playstation remote and some game emulators?
Now $300 Australian dollars... still worth it six years on?
this is a re-upload from Saturday...which apparently was a bad day to upload -_-. lol
Ahhh ha! that explains it, what was wrong with the original upload? looked fine to me :D Happy Holidays btw!
Probably views. So much shitchannels like this, It's prolly the views. Also, who buys a headset like this? Only people who can afford bullshit-products like this. K, bey.
$600 yes no turkiye
I own this and it’s pretty awesome, the only things that kinda bother me are - the glass view fogs up for the first 15 min particularly when it’s cold and is irksome to keep wiping off and the little box unit seems to get worryingly pretty hot
This looks cool! Great job man
+Danny Winget ehhhhhh 👍
Awesome job on the review. I especially like the depth of details you gave on the devices specs and how it works. Just curious, but do you happen to have a review or can make one for the Avegant Glyph?
Identity Paul lol too bad he didn’t get back to you because i also would have liked to know that.
JARED THIS VIDEO IS SO CRISPY 😭😍
THAT looks Dope AF and will be awesome to try out Jared!
+Julian Fuentes it really was nest to review
I purchased one of these from Amazon and was very dissapointed with it. I wear glasses and it could not be worn over glasses. The diopter adjustment would not go far enough to bring the image in sharp. The one I purchased would not display MPO files and would not display 3D correctly that were taken with a Sony 3D camera. I returned mine the next day.
Mark Stambaugh should’ve thought of that before u bought it stupid
IM SOLD ON THIS. I WILL BUY ONE ON THE FIRST OF JULY. THANKS
"Dual 1080p AMOLED displays with, get this, just over 3000 pixels, per inch, per display" Is anyone else confused by this statement? does it use 1080p displays or (near to) 4k per eye?
I know 2016 it was the headset of it's time but the goovis G2 takes the cake
What about standalone use, works with streaming apps ?
Do you think it would be good for reading ebooks?
I noticed you mentioned you can control it with an app. Was the app removed from the Apple app store? Having a hard time trying to find it. I demoed one of these units at a store called b8ta and was thinking about getting one.
Can you review this when it is hooked up to a DSLR camera?
eg Nikon P1000 or similar
San Fransisco airport has them for $399. I bought one this last weekend there.
CAN YOU HOOK UP A 3D BLU RAY PLAYER TO IT TO WATCH 3D MOVIES AND XBOX ONE X?
You would need an HDMI cord to connect to the (provided) adapter but, yes, you can hook up your 3D blu ray player to this device and it looks beautiful. Once connected via hardwire, it acts as basically your television so you would use your blu ray player remote for navigation.
i have bought one of those and 3d doesn't pop out on the screen at you
and they haven't done any updates for this yet and there is no settings
in software for the 3d
peter good . Kills the idea of buying one.
Thank god i found this video and your comment. Was just about to buy a new one off of ebay just after this vid.
I can watch in this headset a 1080p video too?
There are virtual glasses what with i can watch 1080p videos ?
I like to make 3D video's for my 3D LG LA TV, are they watchable on the Royole Moon ergo is this a good investment for me?
I had the same experience with Sony's HMZ pressing down on my nose whenever I could a good viewing angle, making it a completely unenjoyable experience. I'm afraid I might experience the same issue with the Royole Moon. Thanks for the info about the face fit, I don't think i would've gotten that with any other review.
Great review.
I wonder how noone reviewing this thing really talks about the most interested feature 3D and it´s techical data. or what is the max possible input resolution/refreshrates. Can i input 3840x1080 Sbs 3D format. Or does it support 1080p Frame Sequential 3D @120Hz ....this kind of device is ideal for stereo content.
Or questions about blanking. Does it use any Dlp technology ? is there active blinkin anykind.
If only I could connect it directly to my phone and walk around with it...
Can it connect to TH-cam to watch 360 videos?
You just earned a subscriber!
Solid review thanks :)
Awesome video ! Crispy AF :D
Good review but doesn’t address the 3D performance. Can we expect a follow-up?
personal cinema experience. very kool! 📹
+digital d0m it's a pretty unique experience
What's the biggest the screen get to that you think?
Anyone know if the viewing screen size is the same on the Royale X?
Can I watch movies stored on my laptop using this headset?
You can side-load your digital files directly into the Moon into the "Movies" folder - then delete them once you've watched the film. You have 32GB onboard storage so it should hold at least a few standard movies, as long as they aren't huge blu ray files. That way you can take a few movie files with you on the airplane without taking your laptop. Or... if your computer has an HDMI port, you can just hook your hardwired HDMI connection on the box directly into your computer and your computer display should show up inside the Moon. Hope that helps.
Can you please make a review for Goovis g2
Want a better, more comfortable visual experience and don't mind (or in my case prefer) providing your own headphones? Go Goovis.
The next generation of this is going to come out a lot faster that otherwise because...reasons.
how about the comfort ? compare to ps vr is it lighter ?
its not better than PSVR, Rift or Vive... it just portable... better than a Gear VR though.
Jacq Desamours it's got much sharper display than all the others
Anything better out now with a better display want a 4K equivalent for watching movies and gaming.
Lol ha didn’t even Notice your Schnoz until you said something.. yep that’s a big Nose !! You Look like my buddy Lee. He’s got a big polish Schnoz as well..
Is this the same as the one on gearbest
can you play games on 3d like on pc or console?
Yes, it is ok
Just have to subscribe after this review. You just might keep youtube viable.
Just might buy this after how your presentation.
Compared to the hololoens, this is actually realy good value.
How do I use my mike on my Xbox one?
no review will tell you this - i guess they are paid reviews , the Royole Moon is NOT hdcp certified , so no possible viewing of OTT channels if they require HDCP compliance , i have the LTE [sim version] ( the latest bought from ebay for usd 429) but no primevideo/netflix via android boxes , with windows PC - at best it will be SD [480p] resolution on primevideo [in browser] via hdmi connection which is horrible , this is best for watching offline content only via Kodi [Samba sharing ] streaming - FYI , go for HMZ-line up from sony , i have sony hmz-t2 it does everything which Moon could not and comfort is the issue with both Moon and HMZ
In the era of VR I'm not sure why anybody would want this. It just seems like a low FOV VR headset with no tracking and double the price.
I see a lot of comments like yours, and so I looked into VR headsets, but they tend to have poor ppd, and most people say that while watching a movie on an Oculus, etc. works, the resolution is too poor for it to be a good experience. For me, I don't have any need for tracking or a wide FOV. I'm not a gamer. I would buy a cheaper VR headset if it offered the same resolution at a better (or equal) price point. I'm currently looking at the Goovis on Kickstarter at $500.
thank you for your eplain
can you distinguish between the pixels?
+Pro Logic no, I looked hard for any visible pixels and I simply distinguish any pixels, very impressive!
You're tone tells that you're paid by them to sell it.
Is it like VR headsets ?
That's what I want to know! The words "virtual reality" was not used once. Neither was the content-menu-discussed. Confusing to me. And I CAN afford it!
The answer is "no". This is a portable movie theater ONLY. This will not play VR 360 files or standard Side-by-side (SBS) files used in VR. It does not play (or connect) to any of the VR apps. However, you can side-load movie files into the 32GB on-board harddrive, or you can connect via HDMI to your blu ray (or 3D blu ray) player and/or your Xbox and have your own personal television on your face. I have both an Oculus Go and an Oculus Quest 2 and can say without equivocation the movie watching experience on the Moon is superior in every way.
@@salemrealtorwhat about Playstation remote play without cables and Netflix, max, HBO etc it works? And browsers like chrome ?
Can it use Bluetooth?
Incredible Review -- the way you Describe the Features pretty much answered and questions that I had and the Visuals Provided gave that Immersive ASMR Feeling.
Impressed and Humbled, Subscription Deserved -- how did you become such a Fine Reviewer?
