Next year when you're ready to upgrade the mower, you want to get a Mo-Co (Mower-Conditioner) It combines a disc mower with a conditioner that crimps the hay so it dries much faster. They are the way to go , they mow fast and really cut the drying time.

@@OutoftheWoods0623 He is correct. Basically they grooved rollers that crimp the stem and aid in drying. It's especially helpful for plants that retain water in the stem, clovers and some grasses. Wet hay in a bale is a massive fire hazard and because of how compact it is in the bale it's pretty difficult to handle if it catches on fire.
All good, thanks for the videos...all of them not just this one

Hey! I just thought I'd let you know! Back sometime ago; when we were dairy farming, we had a hay tedder that you could set up for tedding hay. Then; after the hay was ready, reset it up in a different way to rake hay into your windrow. It was really easy to set up each time and will save you from buying extra equipment. We hardly ever used the old hay rake anymore. I think that this tedder was a Gehl. It's been a while since then, and we sold out the dairy shortly after we purchased the tedder due to health issues. But, I think it was a Gehl. The place we bought it was local and sold primarily Gehl and Massey Ferguson equipment. I thought I'd give you a heads up to help save you some money, time, and storage space. Good luck and thanks for the video!

I grew up on my parents ranch. We raised registered Beefmaster cattle. I’ve baled probably a couple of million bales of hay. We didn’t bale round bales, but square or rectangle bales. We had three hay barns, one for each type of hay that we baled. We had two tractors that were just for baling. We always used John Deere equipment. We had a sickle cutter that you could adjust for the size of wind row that you wanted, a wind rower to turn the rows for drying, and a baler. For loading the baled hay, we had to conveyor loader that attached to the side of our trailer. I knew other ranchers who would skip the wind row turning because they would bale lighter bales. I baled 80lbs bales and didn’t want any mold growth so I turned the drying hay. At our feed barn we had a long feed trough and a silage shredder that we could run the three different hay types through and an auger that ran the feed down the trough.

Being behind on cutting hay is a good thing; Good help and machinery. Yes sir, interesting! That's what farmers do, make what they need if they can't buy it. See the difference? The drum pulls cut grass into a wind row. The other cutter lays the grass down so it will dry sooner. The tractor motor "throws" to the right and this helps keep the tractor on the hill. A good neighbor!

The tetter is called a fluffer in south Mississippi. As soon as you cut your hay you need to fluff it to start the dryiny process. The faster you can dry it the faster you can get it off the ground. Mother nature is not kind hearted and weather guessers do not have a perfect record. Have fun and stay safe!

It’s fun to watch the hay process and living in farm country I see it a lot. And here in south east Pa. I’m about 15 miles from New Holland where they make that farm machinery. You’re becoming Saw Mill Farm more every year Nathan. And I love to see land like you’ve bought stay as it is. Around here I see fine farm land turned into housing and huge building of one kind or another and I think about the future. That’s the future of food production. You’d think building would happen on land the least suitable for farming. Seems it’s always the prime lands. So seeing your farm growing is a pleasure and I Thank You for sharing this with we your fans. It’s very enjoyable to watch! Many Blessings and a Fine Batch of Hay to ya! DaveyJO in Pennsylvania

Up here in Wisconsin, Dad cut the hay with a sickle mower, crimped/crushed it with a crimper, that's what we called it, I got the job of raking it then we baled it with a square baler with a wagon behind that I loaded the bales on, brought it to the barn and unloaded it with a hayfork that I pulled back and forth with another tractor to raise 10 bales at a time into the loft. I'm 68,so ya know how long ago that was. And I'm a female. LoL. We worked hard on our dairy farm, but wouldn't have traded the experiences for anything.

The big question is why the hay with no cows? Chickens don't eat hat but will scratch in it. You are doing great in your first year.

Great to see you getting into hay...Little advice on the drum mower and I am sure Clyde told you this when you bought it if you got to speak to him...pull in the field, stop, swing it around, level it up, turn it on, and never pick it up again until you are done mowing the field. Also, they will mow as fast as you can drive the tractor. I laughed when you went and got the hay tedder from the man in chuckey...you should have considered picking that 3point rake up as cheap as it is. It would have got you a good basic hay rake to get started for now. Oh, and I laughed because you bought both the mower and the tedder from the same family just in 2 different locations and didn't even know it.

Say, Nathan, you are now a *farmer*! I have heard that in many states, there are many tax benefits if one is registered as a farmer. I guess you could check with your accountant. I do not know about Tennessee and my memory only reflects maybe ten years ago.
Too, if one is a Farmer, you can buy diesel much cheaper, as they sell a colored diesel for farmers at a much cheaper cost per gallon.
A farmer. I am not sure what qualifies, but as you sell your hay rolls, this means that you farm.
Too, also you might could buy some red clover seed or even alfalfa seed and broadcast the seeds over your grass. Not just for pretty flowers and more butterflies, as these plants fix nitrogen into the soil to enrich the soil and if you “advertise” that there is clover or alfalfa in the hay, you might could sell them at a higher price as these bales or rolls would have a higher value.

Good luck with your hobby farming . You will find out fast that it will consume all your time and money . Your milling videos will certainly become less and less . Grew up on a hobby farm and worked on a beef farm . It was easier to look after 100 head than the 10 at home .
However it is very satisfying work .

Use your hay cutting attachment for the year. By the end of the year you'll be better with it. Practice makes perfect, I'm sure you'll perfect your technique.

Nathan and his toys. 😁 Just as well you live now and not a couple of hundred years ago in England... The Industrial Revolution saw the invention of machines in many industries. Most people think of factories but in rural areas the places most affected were farms and the new equipment did the work of many farm labourers. It was a terrible problem for the farmworkers as their jobs often meant they got somewhere to live - but if the job disappeared, their families would become homeless and hungry. The farmworkers started to destroy the new machines; tractors, harvesters, ploughs - all met the wrath of the people being thrown off the land. There were riots across southern England and the destruction continued. "Machine-breakers" they were called, wrecking the machines and setting fire to farm buildings. If and when the law caught up with them, the machine-breakers would get a swift trial and when they were found guilty (a pretty much predetermined verdict) some were hanged - and others were sentenced to transportation and sent to Australia's penal colonies.
One of my great-great-times-great-uncles was a Machine-breaker. Sentenced to seven years penal servitude in Australia's most notorious prison. After six and a half years of hard labour, he was pardoned and given the option to return home. He came back, but as a further injustice, because he was no longer the responsibility of the state, he had to pay his own fare!
So, Nathan, as you ride around on your tractor, making hay while the sun shines, think of my great-great-times-great-uncle William and if you do tackle that hill, make sure you're driving a tractor with a roll-bar!

You can drive alot faster even with the drum mower, maybe an idea... you let mike cut and you start tedding the grass already so it is spreaded and dries faster.

the disc leaves hay laying similar to a sickle mower just lays down the drums mower leave kinda in windrow thick
not good for drying hay so between the the two disc mower is better

Nice job! You can go a bit faster next time, also try to no let the grass grow out too long. Mow it before it gets to grow seeds… more nutrition in the grass
