- It's been over 4 years since I posted my first video teaching how to metal detect for beginners. I have gained leaps and bounds on my filming and editing. While it still may have much more room to grow, you'll find this beginner's guide to metal detecting to be tons better than my first.
I teach you the tricks on how to metal detect, especially geared toward those who are new to metal detecting or trying metal detecting for the first time. I have found hundreds of dollars in the ground and several rings. It's always fun to find what has been hidden in the ground for a long time. Thanks for joining me!

I have asked time and time again on how to start and every time I get no answers,till I found this video,I told my wife I’m buying a metal detector next yr and going out since we live in Southwest Virginia,never know since the city I live in was the last confederate state capital,thanks for this video it really helped

like the video very much. enjoyed how you dealt with the kids. the fun of detecting is the hunt, giving the coin away really got their attention, and teaching manners is never a waste of time. you probably made a few detecting enthusiasts the day you were detecting.

You wont believe this. Just bought my first detector (Fisher F5) a week ago. In the first week just in my yard and 1 park. I found 2 womens 10k gold class rings. Gave one back trying to give back the 2nd one. 1 silver dime, 18k gold Jesus medallion, 18k gold bracelet. with tons of coins. Lovin' it! Your vids are very helpful. Especially in OC.

ive had this metal detector in my room for a year and only used it to find screws in the driveway and the main water line WOW this is awesome i didnt believe the graph on the screen

That's great news! As for what is best... it depends what you're looking for. The type of metal detector your probably going to get will be best used at parks, but can certainly be used in dry sand at the beach, too. The more expensive ones are good for the beach because they won't get tricked by the mineralization. I personally really like lakes, but there aren't many around where I live. If you're looking for gold, what I've learned tells me to look at the beach or lake. For silver or random fun things, go to parks or private property where you have permission to search.

I’ve just brought with my seven year old son a minelab vanquish 340. What are your thoughts on this machine? From your video I’ve realised that I need a pin pointer. I have my eye on the minelab 35. Cheers from New Zealand
I've never heard of that model, but Minelab is a trusted name in metal detecting. Based on all the reviews I quickly searched through on various sites, it looks like it's a highly rated detector. I love my pinpointer! It cost me almost as much as my detector, but in time savings, it has paid for itself several times over. Even a cheap one can save you minutes per hole, especially those finds that like to go out with the dirt or hide on the side of your hole. HH and Good luck from the top half of the world :)

thatoneguy , sounds like a good plan😃. It will be awhile before we open up our borders. We have just about got covid beat. No new cases for around a week and 98% of people have recovered 😋

Nice basics video
I’m planning on using a metal detector to find stuff in my backyard that may be worth something. There could be tunnels, a time capsule, or even gold! I know theres extension cords under the backyard connecting to some unknown power source, so maybe a metal detector can detect what those extension cords lead to
They absolutely can... don't know about time capsules or tunnels, but it's possible :)

The same detector I was using can be used for finding gold. Patience and a good ear will help you find gold...

Some public parks forbid it, but there's usually signage. For instance, I was in Illinois in a city of historical interest and their public parks specifically said no metal detecting allowed.

Do you need a charger for a metal detector
I use and recommend rechargeable batteries. All the detectors I've had have not needed a charger.
What sensitiveity should I use
That depends on where you are detecting. If I find my detector is dinging a ton, I'll lower the sensitivity a bit. On the beach, with the ace 250, I'm usually 2 to 3 bars away from the highest sensitivity. With my more expensive detector, I leave the sensitivity high enough that I can find targets nearly 3 feet away. It's specific to your detector and many are different. In parks, I'm usually 2 bars from the top.
How many brass keys have you found?
Oof, I have found a few while scuba metal detecting... not so many above water, though.

Some foreign countries are hit/ miss when it comes to legally detecting on the beach. For instance, I think it's illegal in Portugal, but legal in Spain... detecting on the beach, that is. In the US, you have to stay away from historical landmarks and national parks. Some state parks have restrictions, but I've never been stopped at a state park beach in California and would suspect that, for the most part, if you're in the sand, you're ok. You just have to look and research before going. If there's nothing on their website talking about it, when going through the booth to pay for parking or what not, ask if anyone had found anything cool metal detecting the area recently. Asking that way isn't asking permission or asking if it's against the rules. Instead, it implies it's ok to go unless they say otherwise...tacet approval, if you will.

The Garrett Ace 250 was about $180. My Sea Hunter II cost me about $500 but is about 900, I think.
First find was a quarter! Hope I get more lucky!!

Carrie a water spray bottle to clean,and a poch or bag.
I like both of those suggestions. I do most of my cleaning when I get back home, but in-field cleaning is satisfying! I use a jewelry cleaner...

Just as a side note, (someone told me but I didn't listen.). I Used a small metal hand shovel and ended up damaging a rare coin. So whenever possible. Go with a plastic one.
Would using a plastic shovel have prevented the damage? Just curious.
@@junkisdeleted yes it would have you always wanna go with a softer material when you have the oppurtunity but using a metal shovel is just fine most of the time

Psssst, wanna hear a magic trick?
Skip to 20 seconds in and you’ll discover that the remainder 10 MINUTES and 6 seconds has good audio quality.
You would’ve discovered this sooner if you would’ve watched the video for more than 20 seconds or simply skipped ahead, it would actually take you less time to do that than to type a comment.

Thanks for the advice. I'm always working on my audio. Even hired someone to teach me more editing skills. We'll see how it goes... easier said than done, sometimes.

How about you try to use your big brain to watch the first minute of the video or, get this, the entire video.
You will find, to your amazement, that only the first 18 or so seconds have poor audio quality and that the remainder 10 MINUTES and 8 seconds has average/good audio quality.
I have ADHD and even I, with my wavering attention span, was able to scroll half a minute ahead and discover it was only the intro that had poor audio quality.
