      Harvinder Sangha it’s unfortunate he didn’t have the drive to make that happen. This is as someone who was a huge Alex Semin fan back in the day. So smooth, his release was absolutely insane. Could have been one of the greats if he just had a decent work ethic

    still wondering how back in his prime years caps, having two absolute beasts in terms of scoring on their roster, didn't manage to make it far into the playoffs. Semin's wrist shot was literally insane both power and accuracy-wise, the others, including Ovechkin, are nowhere near to him in this respect. Growing up I tried to take after him, spent hours practicing my wrist shot, but never reached this level haha, I think that's why I didn't go pro. Semin made it look so easy and magnificent sometimes that it was a pure joy watching him play. It's a pity his carreer slipped into decay, but I'm still proud my nation was represented in the NHL by such a player, and that I had an opportunity to witness his play when he was in Russia.

      Coming from a Caps fan, it's because they weren't built for playoff hockey back during the "young guns" era. They were flashy and put up a lot of points in the regular season and then get bounced in the first or second round. Tough to watch that every year, but so glad we got one in 2018!

    Legit had a better wrister than anyone I’ve ever seen. That goal against Nashville where he drags around the d man to get the shot off and goes far side top corner from that angle is easily the greatest shot I’ve ever seen.

    Semin was so sick. That wrist shot was money as he always put it under the bar.. that Russian had such incredible hands too. Wish his peak level of play would have lasted longer then a couple of seasons but appreciate his tenure. The year he scored 40 goals while Ovechkin was in his prime -the Caps offense were impossible to stop . Best power play unit ever .

    He might never was the most consistent, check-eating, throw-your-body-into-the-shooting-lane and do-everything-for-the-win type of ol' canadian all heart and passion player.
    Nevertheless he was very serious and passionate about making plays in the highest humanly possible way skillwise, while making it look as casual and swaggy as possible. And if he fullfilled, the joy in his face and the sneaky smile, were very contagious. He played and lived for the gallery, for the pure joy and beauty of the game, for the absolute perfection in skill and smarts and he interpreted hockey as sporty art and refused any other perspectives. And in his prime he was ridiculously efficent in this low percentage plays. Everbody knew he'll go gloveside high, but when he released his lazer, it was still only up to him, whether it went narrowly wide or high, bounced back from the post and jumped back to your own goalie, or went BING-waterbottle in the most sexy way. He literally refused to score ugly goals. Never bending over to modern business-hockey and its demanders in efficency despite all the critics from all around the hockey world. He was admired and hated by his coaches and teammates simultaniously, for somebody being brave enough to go this route in an environment like the old NHL.
    He was a crucial puzzle piece in making the Washington Globetrotters of the mid 00s- early 10s the most spectacular club teams beside the CSKA Moscow of the mid80s and the Red Wings of the late 90s in the last 40 years. Him and Backström playing keep-away and showing all kind of puck magic when playing on the same line was a unique experience, and worth all the shortening in sleep when I stayed up many times late to watch them do their artistry.
    In his prime the most spectacular player I've ever seen with the most complete pure skillset. In front of all those household names like Makarov, Khamensky, K. Nilsson, Savard, Lemieux, Bure, Mogilny, Kovalev, Kovalchuk, Malkin, Kane, McDavid or even Datsyuk.
    For me hockey consists of 3 eras.
    Before Semin,
    While Semin's prime,
    After his prime.
    He had a good last season, but looks much more common nowadays, playing more physical and realistic, but his legs have gone, as has his shot cause of his back and wrist.
    Nevertheless, it will be a sad day when he finally hangs 'em up and goes into Metallurgy.
    He was a unique player, and unfortunately there's nobody even remotely comparable around nowadays.

      Sorry a bit late, I completely forgot I posted here.
      Of course I did not forget about Ovechkin.
      I loved the Caps in this era, especially under Boudreau when he let them of the leash and they were completely freewheeling through the Reg. Seasons. When put together, the SOB-line was one of the filthiest, eyepleasing lines ever stepping on NHL ice. As I European, I had so many short nights back then, because I couldn't resist watching this guys celebrating hockey.
      Ovechkin certainly and rightfully will be remembered as a much superior player in the NHL. It's closer in international play though.
      Their respective approach to the game and playing styles were so different, that it's pretty difficult to make quality comparsions. But Ovechkin never was and much less is now a player without holes in his game.
      And here I don't agree. There were quite a few areas where Semin, in his prime and fully confident, was a arguably better player.
      IQ, defensive positioning, puck stealing, positional versatility LW/RW, PK, carrying the puck up the ice, creativity, passing, pure shot and some more.
      It's just that Ovechkin was/is so outstandingly dominant in his strong departments, that it outweights his shortcomings most of the time.

    • @canucklehead70
      @canucklehead70 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@dugaemin Thanks for replying I respect your insight, and I couldnt put it better myself. When on his game, Semin is clearly the most skilled shooter the game has seen. But I think inconsistency needs to be included in the argument. But when on his game, he was better than Ovechkin. The problem is he had too many highs and lows His highs was one of the best players in the league, his lows were really low and probably not an ideal teammate. But doesnt take away he has to be in top 5 or 10 in most exciting players of all time, he definitely doesnt get the recognition he deserves .Personally hes in my top 4 favourite players along with Ovechkin and the Sedins. Im a Nucks fan and watched their entire career, I believe they were the most exciting players of all-time.

    • @dugaemin
      @dugaemin 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@canucklehead70 thx for the kind words.
      Of course Semin had not only a highly complex playingstyle, his personality/mind was at least as complex. Very sensitive and fragile character. And it could turn on him anytime and in a heartbeat (e.g.one single bad play, a heavy check, a small injury...), and making a complete mess out of his game, putting him into a slump for sometimes several weeks. I always speculated that he hid his vulnerability behind a wall of cool demander, which oftenly and falsely was interpreted as being lazy and uninterested. There was just no way to openly show the inner panic in a tough environment like the hockey microcosmos. Mental coaching might had done wonders.
      He kind of always reminded me of an old italian sportscar...tons of tiny things can go wrong anytime. But those rare moments of absolute beauty when every part is working properly and accordingly are worth all the suffering. As a fan... and I guess as a player as well. The charme of imperfection.
      I always had a soft spot as a fan for athletes who, despite being highly talented, have certain inner obstacles to overcome, where success is an uncertainty, but is as sweeter whenever it might happen.
      E.g. Christophe Dugarry, former french footballer, or Stan Wawrinka, who fascinatingly got his act together late in his career. Or Alex Semin.
      What a contrast it was to the kind of simplistic, but absolutely indestructible character Ovechkin had/s to offer.
      The Sedin twins and their idiosyncratic approach to the game definitely were a unique treat to watch as well. Such exquistite hockeybrains for clever plays they both had and a knack for delivering it in a beautiful manner. Luckily for the hockey world and especially for you Canucks supporters they weren't seperated when they came to NA.
      On a painfull side, as a Swiss, I remember the WHC finals 2013 against Sweden vividly. After the Swiss against all odds went 9-0 till the finals, beating Canada, Sweden, USA and Czechia (2x), they were finally taken down, mainly by the Sedins, who joined the Swedes during the later stages of the tournament.
      What a pity, that the Canucks couldn't win a few more PO-games that year.😊
