    You know what helps me... It's about perspective. The moment I realized that I can overcome presentations is when I realised that one day we're all going to die. Why waste it being nervous. Be angry. This also helps. I get angry that I'm like this and use that anger with a IDGAF attitude

I remember myself that if I do that speech it will open many great opportunities. If It didn’t go as a wanted than I say I gained courage and before and during the speech Affirmations like ‘ I can speak, I’ve got something to say. People like me and when I do that speech I connect with that audience’. And please don’t forget to breathe🙈

      @alexanderlyon  5 ปีที่แล้ว +396

      Hi Salma. You might want to reflect on what about it makes you so nervous. For example, are you afraid people will judge you? Are you afraid of what failure would mean? Are you afraid of being embarrassed? I ask this because when people are really nervous, they have typically built up the negative consequences in their heads. Usually, if you can get clear on what exactly your thoughts are and write the down, you'll be able to decide if those negative thoughts are true and then replace them with more helpful thoughts.

    If I might add something (for people who are suffering from chronic anxiety): DO practice a lot and know your stuff, but DON'T overdo it. Don't stay up the whole night trying to make it 150% perfect. You need sleep, that's okay. Try to focus on a healthy balance, because if you're practicing so much that you start to overthink absolutely every word and phrase you use it's not gonna work to your advantage. I'd recommend planning a schedule for practicing and trying to implement some relaxation techniques (such as meditation, for example) before and/or after these practice sessions, cause for people suffering from anxiety even just practicing this stuff might be very nerve-wracking. So, plan ahead (realistically) and try to also relax a bit. You got this.

    • @alexanderlyon
      @alexanderlyon  5 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Thanks, Ellie. Agreed. Preparation but not perfection.

      @alexanderlyon  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@ellie7200 Yes! I've actually thought a lot about the various mindsets that make us extra anxious and perfectionism is one of them. So, it's a hard balance to say on the one hand that practicing like crazy will help you when it's really the mindset that drives the practice that can lead to more or reduce anxiety. So, if a person thinks "I want to be ready for anything and really know my stuff," then that will help. If they think, "I want to practice this until it's 'perfect,'" then they're doing to likely freak themselves out.

    I know sometimes, no matter how hard you try to do the tips on TH-cam, you still get nervous.
    If these tips still don't work for you, do my trick: try humming, make your voicebox vibrate until it's your turn to speak.
    Here's the logic behind it: before it's your turn to speak in a meeting or a presentation, someone else is probably speaking. Whether you have to wait for your turn to speak or someone's introducing you as speaker or just simply waiting for the meeting to start, your mouth is most definitely shut. And while you wait to speak, that's when the nervousness starts to elevate.
    You screw up when it's already your turn to speak because that's the only time you hear your own voice. You know what you're talking about but your voice is alien to your ears.
    By humming, you hear your own voice before you even speak. By making your voicebox vibrate, you simulate speaking.
    So when you open your mouth to talk, it already feels like you've been doing it for quite sometime and you feel comfortable already.
    I hope that helps. Let me know :)

    I used to be nervous about public speaking but made myself take a course in college on public speaking. We had to give a talk once a week and after that quarter, I was no longer anxious. At this point, I've given talks at meetings in front of hundreds of people without problems.
    What helps me is to remember that most people in the audience are on your side: they want you to succeed and they're not there with the intention of making fun/ laughing/ arguing with you. Think about when you've been in the audience of a presentation: did you go in thinking 'I'm going to see how this person will trip up or how they will fail." NO: most likely you were looking forward to learning something or hearing what they're going to say. So remember that when you're the speaker.
    Secondly, go in with the attitude "I have some really cool information this audience needs" or "I just learned something really neat and I'm going to share it with them" rather than, "People are going to see how stupid I am. They know more about this topic than me." Think of it as sharing information with a bunch of friends: are you nervous when you do that?

    • @lilychu8912
      @lilychu8912 3 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      You can also be honest: I have heard speakers say things like: "I'm really nervous about this talk but I'm excited to be here today." You can even ask the audience: "How many of you are nervous about public speaking? Raise your hand." "I am too! But here goes!" Most audiences are sympathetic as most people are nervous about public speaking.

    I get nervous. I practiced my last speech over 300 times in a 2 month period in a multitude of settings. I also envisioned myself speaking every night in a confident way. I highly recommend being overly obsessed like this the first few times. Know your stuff forward and backward. Practice gesturing, fluidity everything. Your confidence will grow immensely in practice like this. Then bag a few successful speeches before dialling the prep back a bit. It’s key to get successful experiences under your belt.

    I haven’t had much public speaking practice but of the times I did good was when I practiced like crazy. Saying the same speech over and over while recording it for myself to watch. I did a master of ceremonies host in front of thousands of people. I was terrified leading up to it. I’m a person that gets a shaky voice, hearts starts beating super fast and feel like I’m gonna black out in front of a few people but talking in front of thousands of people after I started speaking I wasn’t nervous. I was shocked, but it was bc I had went over my script many dozens of times for weeks in advance and it became just another practice.

      Great story, Dom. Thank you for sharing. I love your statement that "it became just another practice." I believe that should be the goal of practicing a lot. • @alexanderlyon
      @alexanderlyon  5 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      You are correct. My advice is for people who struggle with average levels of nervousness. Some people struggle with high-level anxiety but tips in a video like this won't do much for those people. In those case, the person's anxiety is usually persistent across contexts and not isolated on public speaking anxiety. I'd say the advice in this video (and other videos like it) will help (at least a little) about 8 or 9 out of 10 public speakers. The other 1 to 2 out of 10 likely have some form of social anxiety/communication apprehension or anxiety issues more generally that is often rooted in a difficult past experience. A person in that situation likely would benefit from counseling to figure out what the root experience is to get some healing in that area of pain.

    For me what works is this, I tell myself that this presentation is NOT about me but about the content of the presentation and the audience. I cannot be selfish and give importance to how I feel. It should always be about the message and the audience.

    What has helped me in the past is if I get a chance to stand at the podium before speaking time. Physically occupy the space. If that's not possible, visualize yourself standing in the space. Being well-rehearsed will go along way toward calming nerves. And don't forget to breathe.

    I have a graduate school presentation in less than 2 hours over zoom and this is helping me calm down even though I’ve practiced a lot but not too much to where I memorized it. It’s just weird how I’m so nervous over a presentation where I’ll only really be seeing the professors face. Just gonna try and slow my speech down to make sure I don’t miss going over any important point and making 20 min and not going under.

    This is great information and probably my favorite of your videos to this point. It would all be very helpful for a certain leadership class coming up. I agree whole heartedly with the concept of practice, practice, practice. My first true presentation was so bad, I could t even listen to it afterwards. But twenty years later, I am just much more comfortable with myself and presenting.

    I get so anxious when I answer my teacher's questions that my voice and hands would shake uncontrollably. It's not even limited to that, during presentations, reports, and public speaking as well. And yet when i think of doing those, like speak in front of a crowd, or do reports in my class, I would always find that I quite enjoy doing it. I would formulate what I would say. Even when answering my teacher, I would formulate an answer to it as I really enjoy speaking out, telling my opinion and answering questions. But when I actually decide to answer, my hands would shake uncontrollably. In all my presentations, I prepared thoroughly everything even going as far as watching videos to improve my speaking and add more info about my report. But in the end, my hands would continue to shake along with my voice that it becomes noticeable to my classmates, and more often than not affects my presentation. The process of preparing was fun, but presenting and speaking it, not so much. Idk what to do with it anymore because it always happens no matter what I do.
    Edit: I am watching this video in hopes that these tips would work out. I have an upcoming extemporaneous speech this monday and I'm really nervous.

    I have a valedictorian speech coming up at my graduation soon, watching this for tips!! I’m attempting to focus on taking a breath between sentences and slowing down...when I present (and especially read) I go so quickly that I lose my breath and become shaky. Practice is key! I’m even attempting to memorize certain sections of the speech so I can look to the audience and recite them from memory, rather than hyper-focusing on my paper.

    I meditate before I get up, and then concentrate on my breathing being slow and calm. I then tell myself I feel great and I am great. Even though I don’t believe it, saying it makes it feel real and very importantly leaves no space for my normal negative voice telling me it’s going to be a disaster. That negative voice is not WHO you are, people who don’t get nervous are either 1. lucky enough to have a supportive inner voice and these people will never be able to understand the internal battle that others are fighting. Or 2. They are overruling the negative voice successfully. I recommend reading the power of now by Elkhart Tolle.

    I have shown dogs in a variety of sports for several decades and all these things are true. Practice! Practice! Practice! If you are prepared ahead of time for what you are doing, the nerves are a lot less. Prepare ahead of time what you are going to wear and say and do and nerves are less. Prepare everything down to every detail and then nerves are less. I actually prefer performing in front of a crown because that is the fun part. Showing a great dog in a great sport in front of a great audience.

    In elementary and middle school I was always so nervous I feel like a 10/10 my stomach would hurt and that’s where most of my embarrassing public speaking moments came from. I remember 1 time when I was in 6th grade I wrote a decent presentation that o thought was bad because I had just wrote it the night before and I skipped through half of it and had minute long pauses and it was horrible, I realize now what I would have said wasn’t worse than like half the people that went before me and people remember it more when you do that.

    • @justinknowles9748
      @justinknowles9748 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Prayer and deep breathes. Also, this tip is kind of cynical, if there is someone in the class that typically doesn't present well, I finagle a way to go right after them. It makes me feel calm. The opposite is also true though, if I try and follow the class star speaker consider me lost in the sauce... (a tip to myself - I should just focus on my own presentation lol)

    This happens to me when I am suddenly spontaneously expected to present on-the-spot, and it's BAD. I talk faster than my brain can come up with what I'm trying to say, and I often just draw a blank and have to pause and remind myself what I was saying and what to say next. My eyes water to the point that I can't see my notes and my voice wobbles like crazy.
    When that happens, it then has a knock-on effect for the next few times I present, even if I have time to prepare for those ones, because I remember just how bad I felt, and a sort of PTSD sets in and the same symptoms occur.
    I had a bad incident like that on Friday, suddenly spontaneously expected to give some background on a project to the whole department that I really wasn't expecting to have to do. Now I'm looking up videos to try and get a handle on it, so that PTSD thing doesn't happen next time. This is going to murder my career as a leader if I can't fix it.
