    My first Dead show...I was 14 and my uncle and his friends took me(after years of making me listen to them). I was fascinated with the audience and blown away by the music. Now I'm 51 with hundreds of shows in my collection and not a day goes by that I don't listen to at least one Dead song!

      I saw them a few days later in New Jersey and Jerry took ill but gutted out the show, but his vocals were in rough shape; not as sweet as in this song.....This song didn't make it into the live rotation for the coming years.....

      Im 58. I saw The Dead from 1983, (the mudshow at Merriweather Post in MD) as my 1st show. Saw the real Dead lineup 120 times and the JGB, JERRY solo on acoustic guitar, solo with Jerry and Robert Hunter. Hunter did all his alternate versions of Jerry's songs, the way Robert conceived them. Almost got to see Bobby and the Midnites. Then. ofcourse Ratdog. Then we saw the Allmans in 1989 and my girlfriend was astonished thatthe Allmans were better than the Dead. That was when Warren Haynes was Dickie's 2nd guitarist before Warren lost his identity and then Derek Trucks, slide-master joined up with Warren and Dickie left the band

    Lyrics
    If I had the world to give, I'd give it to you
    Long as you live, would you let it fall, or hold it all in your arms?
    If I had a song to sing, I'd sing it to you
    As long as you live, lullaby or maybe a plain serenade
    Wouldn't you laugh, dance, and cry or be afraid at the change you made
    I may not have the world to give to you
    But maybe I have a tune or two
    Only if you let me be your world
    Could I ever give this world to you
    But I will give what love I have to give,
    I will give what love I have to give,
    I will give what love I have to give, long as I live.
    If I had a star to give, I'd give it to you
    Long as you live, would you have the time
    To watch it shine, watch it shine
    Or ask for the moon and heaven too? I'd give it to you.
    Well maybe I've got no star to spare, or anything fine or even rare,
    Only if you let me be your world, could I ever give this world to you.
    Could I ever give this world to you.

      @@mattriley3550 While that's all well and good,, this version is so much more emotive, heart-felt and resonates. Like this morning, as I need to visit as I just lost a nephew to cancer last night (Saturday). And who on Friday could not make his son's wedding because of it. 50 years young and such a kind soul, a bright light. No fanning by Jerry will be as beautiful as how he sang that night in Cleveland. Enjoy Red Rocks. Cleveland is where I always go when salvation calls, when redemption's needed, or when I need to be reminded that only love matters in this life.

    Gotta say -- and I know I'll get my arse flamed for this, but . . . as much as I often enjoyed those synth-and-MIDI-laden "Space" jams in the later years, I'll always be partial to the earlier extended jams that consisted of nothing but the "real" instruments -- that interaction, so delicate yet intense, outward-bound/upward-thrusting yet rooted in a kind of introspective spiritual journeying that somehow promised to both fearlessly explore the unknown and created a space of solace and safety, the sensual and the spiritual melded so perfectly . . . it never quite sounded the same after all the "gimmicks" started coming into play. Jus' my opinion, of course. . . .

    The only thing I have to say about this song is it's a shame that there were a handful of really brilliant tunes that the Dead had, but never developed for regular stage play - for whatever reason. I think Garcia had very strong opinions about whether or not a particular song should be played live regularly. These were all mostly songs which did not lend themselves to what eventually became the pacing of and workload limit of the band. He felt that "Cosmic Charlie" for example, simply could not be played as written, in a way which didn't involve a certain amount of added effort that to him, felt like a heavy lift each time it was attempted. Not that he was a lazy performer- it was more about the eventual groove they needed to maintain the specific musical juggling and counter point that became their source of live inspiration. Charlie has three different sections and changing vocal harmonics and rythms and simply cannot be fitted to do anything else than what it does. It HAS to go to this peculiar spot and then turn and go right to the other specific thing and then the vocals pitch up into some weird interval and pretty soon - if you're not REALLY on top of it, it will crash down - because you can't escape into some dittybop noodling to cover it. It's DOA. And Garcia never liked that kind of performing. Exactitude on stage was the antithesis of improvisation. This song - "If I Had..." Is one of my favs. But just listen to it. Not quite the same thing as the "Charlie' problem, but more about Garcia not wanting to have to all of a sudden sing these rather difficult passages. Just a guess - but this has GOT to be the number one Garcia song in the repetoire in terms of largest written vocal range. It probably made him strain to much or even sing incorrectly.

    • @nmax696
      @nmax696 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      With Cosmic Charlie, Garcia actually said that with a lot of the early songs that he and Hunter hadn't really figured out songwriting well yet. And that it was impossible to get a breath in between verses.

      @robertkubik1997 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I remember reading something about this tune that the guys liked it but the vocal changes were difficult for Jerry and he didn't like the outcome when he sang it. Lyrically it is a great song. To be honest I am surprised it hasn't been covered by more female vocalists where the range may be a little easier

    • @d-204
      @d-204 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree. Maybe it was written in the wrong time period. If it was an early 70s song. Maybe he would have been able to sing it with more confidence. When I first heard this song, I searched for all the live recordings. And came to the same conclusion early on. It was just to much. I hope a rehearsal or demo comes out some day, because I’d love to see the writing process. What was involved. What was left out? Still a great tune. I’m surprised it hasn’t been covered by more artists. One of Garcia/hunters best.

    They really should’ve kept working on this song and kept it in rotation because it’s such a beautiful melody and I can tell that for whatever reason at least this version didn’t seem to be polished the way they preferred their music to be.A bit wonky but nonetheless it’s so good that they should have kept performing it.

      Yeah this chord progression Ab- C lends very well to using c minor pentatonic on the Ab and then C mixolydian or major pentatonic on the C - it’s a great tension with the Eb - E natural - just try not to hit E natural over the Ab lol! You can also combine notes of both into one huge scale (C-D-Eb-E-F-F#-G-Ab-Bb-C)

    Was this the show where some goofy lady wonders on stage and asks Jerry if he can give her some banjo lessons? 🤔

    Jerry DID give us the world. It is just such a shame....that soooo many.......could not form their own mystic world.....without expecting HIM to do it for em all the time. .....just my old school dead head opinion.....fans.......fame..........the heal me jesus types........killed his spirit...he gave all he had.....maybe thats why he stopped playing it......cuz.......he had already given it...and it was never enough

      Bob's slide? Yeah, I'm not a fan. I don't get why others love it. As a musician, it pains my ears.
